This paper is an introduction to Homological Mirror Symmetry, derived categories, and topological D-branes aimed mainly at a mathematical audience. In the paper we explain the physicists' viewpoint of the Mirror Phenomenon, its relation to derived categories, and the reason why it is necessary to enlarge the Fukaya category with coisotropic A-branes; we discuss how to extend the definition of Floer homology to such objects and describe mirror symmetry for flat tori. The paper consists of four lectures which were given at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (Los Angeles), March 2003, as part of a program on Symplectic Geometry and Physics.
These lectures, given at the Chinese Academy of Sciences for the BeiJing/HangZhou International Summer School in Mathematical Physics, are intended to introduce, to the beginning student in string theory and mathematical physics, aspects of the rich and beautiful subject of D-brane gauge theories constructed from local Calabi-Yau spaces. Topics such as orbifolds, toric singularities, del Pezzo surfaces as well as chaotic duality will be covered.
These are notes of a series of lectures on mirror symmetry and topological string theory given at the Mathematical Sciences Center at Tsinghua University. The N=2 superconformal algebra, its deformations and its chiral ring are reviewed. A topological field theory can be constructed whose observables are only the elements of the chiral ring. When coupled to gravity, this leads to topological string theory. The identification of the topological string A- and B-models by mirror symmetry leads to surprising connections in mathematics and provides tools for exact computations as well as new insigh…
Lecture notes from 1993 Park City lectures and 1994 Trento lectures. The focus of these lectures is on giving a mathematical description of the A-model and B-model correlation functions on a Calabi--Yau manifold, and a precise mathematical conjecture relating these for a pair of mirror manifolds.
We extend our variant of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces \cite{GN3} and clarify its relation with mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds. We introduce two classes (for the models A and B) of Calabi-Yau manifolds fibrated by K3 surfaces with some special Picard lattices. These two classes are related with automorphic forms on IV type domains which we studied in our papers \cite{GN1}-\cite{GN6}. Conjecturally these automorphic forms take part in the quantum intersection pairing for model A, Yukawa coupling for model B and mirror symmetry between these two classes of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Recen…
We use toric geometry to study open string mirror symmetry on compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. For a mirror pair of toric branes on a mirror pair of toric hypersurfaces we derive a canonical hypergeometric system of differential equations, whose solutions determine the open/closed string mirror maps and the partition functions for spheres and discs. We define a linear sigma model for the brane geometry and describe a correspondence between dual toric polyhedra and toric brane geometries. The method is applied to study examples with obstructed and classically unobstructed brane moduli at various p…
We consider a class of special Lagrangian subspaces of Calabi-Yau manifolds and identify their mirrors, using the recent derivation of mirror symmetry, as certain holomorphic varieties of the mirror geometry. This transforms the counting of holomorphic disc instantons ending on the Lagrangian submanifold to the classical Abel-Jacobi map on the mirror. We recover some results already anticipated as well as obtain some highly non-trivial new predictions.
We discuss D-branes of the topological A-model (A-branes), which are believed to be closely related to the Fukaya category. We give string theory arguments which show that A-branes are not necessarily Lagrangian submanifolds in the Calabi-Yau: more general coisotropic branes are also allowed, if the line bundle on the brane is not flat. We show that a coisotropic A-brane has a natural structure of a foliated manifold with a transverse holomorphic structure. We argue that the Fukaya category must be enlarged with such objects for the Homological Mirror Symmetry conjecture to be true.
We find an agreement of equivariant indices of semi-classical homomorphisms between pairwise mirror branes in the GL(2) Higgs moduli space on a Riemann surface. On one side we have the components of the Lagrangian brane of U(1,1) Higgs bundles whose mirror was proposed by Nigel Hitchin to be certain even exterior powers of the hyperholomorphic Dirac bundle on the SL(2) Higgs moduli space. The agreement arises from a mysterious functional equation. This gives strong computational evidence for Hitchin's proposal.
We discuss some mathematical conjectures which have come out of the Dirichlet branes in superstring theory, focusing on the case of supersymmetric branes in Calabi-Yau compactification. This has led to the formulation of a notion of stability for objects in a derived category, contact with Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry conjecture, and "physics proofs" for many of the subsequent conjectures based on it, such as the representation of Calabi-Yau monodromy by autoequivalences of the derived category.
We describe supersymmetric A-branes and B-branes in open N=(2,2) dynamically gauged nonlinear sigma models (GNLSM), placing emphasis on toric manifold target spaces. For a subset of toric manifolds, these equivariant branes have a mirror description as branes in gauged Landau-Ginzburg models with neutral matter. We then study correlation functions in the topological A-twisted version of the GNLSM, and identify their values with open Hamiltonian Gromov-Witten invariants. Supersymmetry breaking can occur in the A-twisted GNLSM due to nonperturbative open symplectic vortices, and we canonically B…
This work is concerned with branes and differential equations for one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. For a certain class of B-branes we derive the inhomogeneous Picard--Fuchs equations satisfied by the brane superpotential. In this way we arrive at a prediction for the real BPS invariants for holomorphic maps of worldsheets with low Euler characteristics, ending on the mirror A-branes.
Brane brick models are Type IIA brane configurations that encode the $2d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ gauge theories on the worldvolume of D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We use mirror symmetry to improve our understanding of this correspondence and to provide a systematic approach for constructing brane brick models starting from geometry. The mirror configuration consists of D5-branes wrapping 4-spheres and the gauge theory is determined by how they intersect. We also explain how $2d$ $(0,2)$ triality is realized in terms of geometric transitions in the mirror geometry. Mirror symmetry l…
This is the extended abstract of the talk given at the workshop "Geometry and physics of Higgs bundles", held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach in May 2019.
This paper is an introduction to D-branes in Landau-Ginzburg models and Homological Mirror Symmetry. The paper is based on a series of lectures which were given on Second Latin Congress on Symmetries in Geometry and Physics that took place at the University of Curitiba, Brazil in December 2010.
We study a flat connection defined on the open-closed deformation space of open string mirror symmetry for type II compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds with D-branes. We use flatness and integrability conditions to define distinguished flat coordinates and the superpotential function at an arbitrary point in the open-closed deformation space. Integrability conditions are given for concrete deformation spaces with several closed and open string deformations. We study explicit examples for expansions around different limit points, including orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants, and brane conf…
In this lecture I review how a matrix/Azumaya-type noncommutative geometry arises for D-branes in string theory and how such a geometry serves as an origin of the master nature of D-branes; and then highlight an abundance conjecture on D0-brane resolutions of singularities that is extracted and purified from a work of Douglas and Moore in 1996. A conjectural relation of our setting with `D-geometry' in the sense of Douglas is also given. The lecture is based on a series of works on D-branes with Shing-Tung Yau, and in part with Si Li and Ruifang Song.
A vertex algebra is an algebraic counterpart of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. We give a new definition of a vertex algebra which includes chiral algebras as a special case, but allows for fields which are neither meromorphic nor anti-meromorphic. To any complex torus equipped with a flat Kahler metric and a closed 2-form we associate an N=2 superconformal vertex algebra (N=2 SCVA) in the sense of our definition. We find a criterion for two different tori to produce isomorphic N=2 SCVA's. We show that for algebraic tori isomorphism of N=2 SCVA's implies the equivalence of the derive…
Fibrewise T-duality (Fourier-Mukai transform) for D-branes on an elliptic Calabi-Yau three-fold $X$ is seen to have an expected adiabatic form for its induced cohomology operation only when an appropriately twisted operation resp. twisted charge is defined. Some differences with the case of $K3$ as well as connections with the spectral cover construction for bundles on $X$ are pointed out. In the context of mirror symmetry Kontsevich's association of line bundle twists (resp. a certain 'diagonal' operation) with monodromies (esp. the conifold monodromy) is made explicit and checked for two exa…
When combined with mirror symmetry, the A-model approach to quantization leads to a fairly simple and tractable problem. The most interesting part of the problem then becomes finding the mirror of the coisotropic brane. We illustrate how it can be addressed in a number of interesting examples related to representation theory and gauge theory, in which mirror geometry is naturally associated with the Langlands dual group. Hyperholomorphic sheaves and (B,B,B) branes play an important role in the B-model approach to quantization.
These expository notes are based on lectures by Yongbin Ruan during a special semester on the B-model at the University of Michigan in Winter 2014. They outline and compare the mirror symmetry constructions of Batyrev-Borisov, Hori-Vafa, and Berglund-Hubsch-Krawitz.
A D-brane fantasy on noncommutative mirror symmetry, prelude: Noncommutative ringed spaces from local noncommutative crepant resolutions of a singular Calabi-Yau space, dynamical D-branes thereupon, and questions beyond
In this thesis, we study a class of special Lagrangian submanifolds of toric Calabi-Yau manifolds and construct their mirrors using some techniques developed in the SYZ programme. We present a justification on the conjecture on the mirror construction of D- branes in Aganagic-Vafa [2]. We apply the techniques employed in Chan-Lau-Leung [8] and Chan [6], which give the SYZ mirror construction for D-branes. Recently, Chan-Lau-Leung [8] has given an explicit mirror construction for toric Calabi-Yau manifolds as complex algebraic varieties. Inspired by the SYZ transformation of D-branes in Leung-Y…
Irrational invariants from D-brane superpotentials are pursued on the mirror quintic, systematically according to the degree of a representative curve. Lines are completely understood: the contribution from isolated lines vanishes. All other lines can be deformed holomorphically to the van Geemen lines, whose superpotential is determined via the associated inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation. Substantial progress is made for conics: the families found by Mustata contain conics reducible to isolated lines, hence they have a vanishing superpotential. The search for all conics invariant under a r…
Given any equivariant coherent sheaf $\mathcal L$ on a compact semi-positive toric orbifold $\mathcal X$, its SYZ T-dual mirror dual is a Lagrangian brane in the Landau-Ginzburg mirror. We prove the oscillatory integral of the equivariant superpotential in the Landau Ginzburg mirror over this Lagrangian brane is the genus-zero $1$-descendant Gromov-Witten potential with a Gamma-type class of $\mathcal L$ inserted.
In the context of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, we say that (anti)holomorphic (anti)symplectic involutions are brane involutions since their fixed point locus is a brane in the physicists' language, i.e. a submanifold which is either complex or lagrangian submanifold with respect to each of the three Kähler structures of the associated hyperkähler structure. Starting from a brane involution on a K3 or abelian surface, one can construct a natural brane involution on its moduli space of sheaves. We study these natural involutions and their relation with the Fourier--Mukai transfo…
Lectures on resolutions à la Kronheimer of orbifold singularities, McKay quivers for Gauge Theories on D3 branes, and the issue of Ricci flat metrics on the resolved three-folds
These lecture notes cover a brief introduction into some of the algebro-geometric techniques used in the construction of BPS algebras. The first section introduces the derived category of coherent sheaves as a useful model of branes in toric Calabi-Yau three-folds. This model allows a rather simple derivation of quiver quantum mechanics describing low-energy dynamics of various brane systems. Vacua of such quantum mechanics can be identified with the critical equivariant cohomology of the moduli space of quiver representations. These are often counted by various crystal configurations. Using c…
We study the derived categories of coherent sheaves of weighted projective spaces and their noncommutative deformations, and the derived categories of Lagrangian vanishing cycles of their mirror Landau-Ginzburg models. In particular, we show that the derived category of coherent sheaves (B-branes) on the weighted projective plane $\CP^2(a,b,c)$ is equivalent to the derived category of vanishing cycles (A-branes) on the affine hypersurface $X=\{x^ay^bz^c=1\}\subset (\C^*)^3$ equipped with an exact symplectic form and the superpotential $W=x+y+z$. Hence, the homological mirror symmetry conjectur…

We concentrate on a treatment of a Higgs-Coulomb duality as an absence of manifest phase transition between ordered and disordered phases of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ theories. We consider these examples of QFTs in the Schrödinger picture and identify Hilbert spaces of BPS states with morphisms in triangulated categories of D-brane boundary conditions. As a result of Higgs-Coulomb duality D-brane categories on IR vacuum moduli spaces are equivalent, this resembles an analog of homological mirror symmetry. Following construction ideas behind the Gaiotto-Moore-Witten algebra of the infrared one is …
These notes are aimed at mathematicians working on topics related to mirror symmetry, but are unfamiliar with the physical origins of this subject. We explain the physical concepts that enable this surprising duality to exist, using the torus as an illustrative example. Then, we develop the basic foundations of conformal field theory so that we can explain how mirror symmetry was first discovered in that context. Along the way we will uncover a deep connection between conformal field theories with (2,2) supersymmetry and Calabi-Yau manifolds. (Based on lectures given during the "Thematic Progr…
We study aspects related to Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry conjecture in the case of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric varieties. In a 1996 lecture at Rutgers University, Kontsevich indicated how his proposal implies that the groups of automorphisms of the two types of categories involved in the homological mirror symmetry conjecture should also be identified. Our main results provide an explicit geometric construction of the correspondence between the automorphisms of the two types of categories.
Building on Seidel-Solomon's fundamental work, we define the notion of a $\mathfrak{g}$-equivariant Lagrangian brane in an exact symplectic manifold $M$ where $\mathfrak{g} \subset SH^1(M)$ is a sub-Lie algebra of the symplectic cohomology of $M$. When $M$ is a (symplectic) mirror to an (algebraic) homogeneous space $G/P$, homological mirror symmetry predicts that there is an embedding of $\mathfrak{g}$ in $SH^1(M)$. This allows us to study a mirror theory to classical constructions of Borel-Weil and Bott. We give explicit computations recovering all finite dimensional irreducible representati…
We review the applications of mirror symmetry to the study of the moduli spaces of two-dimensional conformal field theories with $N{=}(2,2)$ supersymmetry, particularly those constructed from Calabi--Yau manifolds. (Lecture delivered at the Zurich ICM, section on mathematical physics.)
We describe how to find period integrals and Picard-Fuchs differential equations for certain one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau manifolds. These families can be seen as varieties over a finite field, in which case we show in an explicit example that the number of points of a generic element can be given in terms of p-adic period integrals. We also discuss several approaches to finding zeta functions of mirror manifolds and their factorizations. These notes are based on lectures given at the Fields Institute during the thematic program on Calabi-Yau Varieties: Arithmetic, Geometry, and Physic…
We study mirror symmetry on the singular locus of the Hitchin system at two levels. Firstly, by covering it by (supports of) $(BBB)$-branes, corresponding to Higgs bundles reducing their structure group to the Levi subgroup of some parabolic subgroup $\mathrm{P}$, whose conjectural dual $(BAA)$-branes we describe. Heuristically speaking, the latter are given by Higgs bundles reducing their structure group to the unipotent radical of $\mathrm{P}$. Secondly, when $\mathrm{P}$ is a Borel subgroup, we are able to construct a family of hyperholomorphic bundles on the $(BBB)$-brane, and study the va…
These notes were born out of a five-hour lecture series for graduate students at the May 2018 Snowbird workshop Crossing the Walls in Enumerative Geometry. After a short primer on equivariant cohomology and localization, we provide proofs of the genus-zero mirror theorems for the quintic threefold, first in Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory and then in Gromov-Witten theory. We make no claim to originality, except in exposition, where special emphasis is placed on peeling away the standard technical machinery and viewing the mirror theorems as closed-formula manifestations of elementary localizatio…
We prove a homological mirror symmetry equivalence between an $A$-brane category for the pair of pants, computed as a wrapped microlocal sheaf category, and a $B$-brane category for a mirror LG model, understood as a category of matrix factorizations. The equivalence improves upon prior results in two ways: it intertwines evident affine Weyl group symmetries on both sides, and it exhibits the relation of wrapped microlocal sheaves along different types of Lagrangian skeleta for the same hypersurface. The equivalence proceeds through the construction of a combinatorial realization of the $A$-mo…
For three-partition triple Hodge integrals related to the topological vertex, we derive Eynard-Orantin type recursion relations from the cut-and-join equation. This establishes a version of local mirror symmetry for the local $C^3$ geometry with three D-branes, as proposed by Marino and Bouchard-Klemm-Marino-Pasquetti.
We prove the Bouchard-Mariño Conjecture for the framed one-legged topological vertex by deriving the Eynard-Orantin type recursion relations from the cut-and-join equation satisfied by the relevant triple Hodge integrals. This establishes a version of local mirror symmetry for the local $C^3$ geometry with one $D$-brane.
We give an overview of recent work on Dirichlet branes on Calabi-Yau threefolds which makes contact with Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry proposal, proposes a new definition of stability which is appropriate in string theory, and provides concrete quiver categories equivalent to certain categories of branes on CY. To appear in the proceedings of the 3rd European Congress of Mathematics.
