Benedetti and Guadagnini have conjectured that the marked lenght spectrum of the constant mean curvature foliation $M_τ$ in a 2+1 dimensional flat spacetime $V$ with compact hyperbolic Cauchy surfaces converges, in the direction of the singularity, to that of the marked measure spectrum of the R-tree dual to the measured foliation corresponding to the translational part of the holonomy of $V$. We prove that this is the case for $n+1$ dimensional, $n \geq 2$, {\em simplicial} flat spacetimes with compact hyperbolic Cauchy surface. A simplicial spacetime is obtained from the Lorentz cone over a hyperbolic manifold by deformations corresponding to a simple measured foliation.
Given a regular curve in Minkowski spacetime, we describe necessary and sufficient conditions for this curve to admit a family of pairwise-disjoint crooked planes. Using this criterion, we describe crooked foliations along orbit curves of one-parameter groups of Lorentzian isometries.
For $2+1$ spacetime dimensions, we derive sufficient conditions for the twisting function in a twisted product spacetime, such that there is a global foliation by spacelike CMC surfaces.
A characterization of the foliation by spacelike slices of an $(n+1)$-dimensional spatially closed Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetime is given by means of studying a natural mean curvature type equation on spacelike graphs. Under some natural assumptions, of physical or geometric nature, all the entire solutions of such an equation are obtained. In particular, the case of entire spacelike graphs in de Sitter spacetime is faced and completely solved by means of a new application of a known integral formula.
Let $M$ be a globally hyperbolic maximal compact $3$-dimensional spacetime locally modelled on Minkowski, anti-de Sitter or de Sitter space. It is well known that $M$ admits a unique foliation by constant mean curvature surfaces. In this paper we extend this result to singular spacetimes with particles (cone singularities of angles less than $π$ along time-like geodesics).
We identify certain general geometric conditions on a foliation of a spacetime (M,g) by timelike curves that will impede the existence of null geodesic lines, especially if (M,g) possesses a compact Cauchy hypersurface. The absence of such lines, in turn, yields well-known restrictions on the geometry of cosmological spacetimes, in the context of Bartnik's splitting conjecture. Since the (non)existence of null lines is actually a conformally invariant property, such conditions only need to apply for some suitable conformal rescaling of g.
We solve the spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in the maximally extended Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime with the charge smaller than the mass. Based on these results, we construct constant mean curvature foliations with fixed or varied mean curvature in each slice in this spacetime.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the Dirichlet problem for spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature equation with symmetric boundary data in the extended Schwarzschild spacetime. As an application, we completely solve the CMC foliation conjecture which is posted by Malec and O Murchadha in 2003.
We construct a $T$-axisymmetric, spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces foliation in the Kruskal extension with properties that the mean curvature varies in each slice and ranges from minus infinity to plus infinity. This family of hypersurfaces extends the CMC foliation discussions posted by Malec and Ó Murchadha in 2009.
We first summarize the characterization of smooth spacelike spherically symmetric constant mean curvature (SS-CMC) hypersurfaces in the Schwarzschild spacetime and Kruskal extension. Then use the characterization to prove special SS-CMC foliation property, and verify part of the conjecture by Malec and Ó Murchadha in their 2003 paper.
An energy estimate is proved for the Bel--Robinson energy along a constant mean curvature foliation in a spatially compact vacuum spacetime, assuming an $L^{\infty}$ bound on the second fundamental form, and a bound on a spacetime version of Bel--Robinson energy.
We investigate the local regularity of pointed spacetimes, that is, time-oriented Lorentzian manifolds in which a point and a future-oriented, unit timelike vector (an observer) are selected. Our main result covers the class of Einstein vacuum spacetimes. Under curvature and injectivity bounds only, we establish the existence of a local coordinate chart defined in a ball with definite size in which the metric coefficients have optimal regularity. The proof is based on quantitative estimates, on one hand, for a constant mean curvature (CMC) foliation by spacelike hypersurfaces defined locally n…
We consider open globally hyperbolic spacetimes $N$ of dimension $n+1$, $n\ge 3$, which are spatially asymptotic to a Robertson-Walker spacetime or an open Friedmann universe with spatial curvature $\tildeκ= 0,-1$ and prove, under reasonable assumptions, that there exists a unique foliation by hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature and that the mean curvature function $τ$ is a smooth time function if $N$ is smooth. Moreover, among the Friedmann universes which satisfy the necessary conditions are those that reflect the present assumptions of the development of the universe.
It is shown that in a class of maximal globally hyperbolic spacetimes admitting two local Killing vectors, the past (defined with respect to an appropriate time orientation) of any compact constant mean curvature hypersurface can be covered by a foliation of compact constant mean curvature hypersurfaces. Moreover, the mean curvature of the leaves of this foliation takes on arbitrarily negative values and so the initial singularity in these spacetimes is a crushing singularity. The simplest examples occur when the spatial topology is that of a torus, with the standard global Killing vectors, bu…
We propose a new foliation of asymptotically Euclidean initial data sets by 2-spheres of constant spacetime mean curvature (STCMC). The leaves of the foliation have the STCMC-property regardless of the initial data set in which the foliation is constructed which asserts that there is a plethora of STCMC 2-spheres in a neighborhood of spatial infinity of any asymptotically flat spacetime. The STCMC-foliation can be understood as a covariant relativistic generalization of the CMC-foliation suggested by Huisken and Yau. We show that a unique STCMC-foliation exists near infinity of any asymptotica…
We study the linearised perturbation of the constant mass aspect function foliation in a Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. In particular, we investigate the linearised perturbation of the asymptotic geometry of the foliation at null infinity. We show that there is a 4-dimensional linear space for the linearised perturbation of the initial leaf inside the event horizon, corresponding to which the linearised perturbation of the asymptotic geometry of the foliation at null infinity is preserved to be round. For such a linearised perturbation of the initial leaf in this 4-dimensional linear spac…
We investigate the initial value problem for the Einstein-Euler equations of general relativity under the assumption of Gowdy symmetry on T3, and we construct matter spacetimes with low regularity. These spacetimes admit, both, impulsive gravitational waves in the metric (for instance, Dirac mass curvature singularities propagating at light speed) and shock waves in the fluid (i.e., discontinuities propagating at about the sound speed). Given an initial data set, we establish the existence of a future development and we provide a global foliation in terms of a globally and geometrically define…
We consider spacetimes with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces and with Ricci tensor bounded from below on the set of timelike unit vectors, and prove that the results known for spacetimes satisfying the timelike convergence condition, namely, foliation by CMC hypersurfaces, are also valid in the present situation, if corresponding further assumptions are satisfied. In addition we show that the volume of any sequence of spacelike hypersurfaces, which run into the future singularity, decays to zero provided there exists a time function covering a future end, such that the level hypersurfaces have non…
We prove that for any convex globally hyperbolic maximal (GHM) anti-de Sitter (AdS) 3-dimensional space-time $N$ with particles (cone singularities of angles less than $π$ along time-like curves), the complement of the convex core in $N$ admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. This extends, and provides a new proof of, a result of \cite{BBZ2}. We also describe a parametrization of the space of convex GHM AdS metrics on a given manifold, with particles of given angles, by the product of two copies of the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic metrics with cone singularities of …
This paper gives a new proof that maximal, globally hyperbolic, flat spacetimes of dimension $n\geq 3$ with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces are globally foliated by Cauchy hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature, and that such spacetimes admit a globally defined constant mean curvature time function precisely when they are causally incomplete. The proof, which is based on using the level sets of the cosmological time function as barriers, is conceptually simple and will provide the basis for future work on constant mean curvature time functions in general constant curvature spacetimes, as well f…
We prove that every $(3+1)$-dimensional flat GHMC Minkowski spacetime which is not a translation spacetime or a Misner spacetime carries a unique foliation by spacelike hypersurfaces of constant scalar curvature. In otherwords, we prove that every such spacetime carries a unique time function with isochrones of constant scalar curvature. Furthermore, this time function is a smooth submersion.
The spherically symmetric null hypersurfaces in a Schwarzschild spacetime are smooth away from the singularities and foliate the spacetime. We prove the existence of more general foliations by null hypersurfaces without the spherical symmetry condition. In fact we also relax the spherical symmetry of the ambient spacetime and prove a more general result: in a perturbed Schwarzschild spacetime (not necessary being vacuum), nearly round null hypersurfaces can be extended regularly to the past null infinity, thus there exist many foliations by regular null hypersurfaces in the exterior region of …
We study the existence of surfaces with constant or prescribed Gauss curvature in certain Lorentzian spacetimes. We prove in particular that every (non-elementary) 3-dimensional maximal globally hyperbolic spatially compact spacetime with constant non-negative curvature is foliated by compact spacelike surfaces with constant Gauss curvature. In the constant negative curvature case, such a foliation exists outside the convex core. The existence of these foliations, together with a theorem of C. Gerhardt, yield several corollaries. For example, they allow to solve the Minkowski problem in the 3-…
This paper addresses pure gauge questions in the study of (asymptotically) de Sitter spacetimes. We construct global solutions to the eikonal equation on de Sitter, whose level sets give rise to double null foliations, and give detailed estimates for the structure coefficients in this gauge. We show two results which are relevant for the foliations used in the stability problem of the expanding region of Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetimes [Schlue (2016)]: (i) Small perturbations of round spheres on the cosmological horizons lead to spheres that pinch off at infinity. (ii) Globally well behaved…
We consider static spacetimes whose spatial part admits foliations with the extrinsic curvature tensor K_{ab}=0. There are two complementary cases when the gradient of the lapse function points 1) to the direction of foliation or 2) orthogonally to it. Case 1) gives generalization of metrics like Bertotti-Robinson or Nariai. In case 2) the matter source violates the null energy condition at least on the part of the manifold, having in this sense phantom nature. We also demonstrate that for the manifolds under discussion the horizon can be naked in the sense that certain Weyl components diverge…
We prove that the leaves of an inverse mean curvature flow provide a foliation of a future end of a cosmological spacetime $N$ under the necessary and sufficent assumptions that $N$ satisfies a future mean curvature barrier condition and a strong volume decay condition. Moreover, the flow parameter $t$ can be used to define a new physically important time function.
The Ricci tensor (Ric) is fundamental to Einstein's geometric theory of gravitation. The 3-dimensional Ric of a spacelike surface vanishes at the moment of time symmetry for vacuum spacetimes. The 4-dimensional Ric is the Einstein tensor for such spacetimes. More recently the Ric was used by Hamilton to define a non-linear, diffusive Ricci flow (RF) that was fundamental to Perelman's proof of the Poincare conjecture. Analytic applications of RF can be found in many fields including general relativity and mathematics. Numerically it has been applied broadly to communication networks, medical ph…
We establish a uniform estimate for the injectivity radius of the past null cone of a point in a general Lorentzian manifold foliated by spacelike hypersurfaces and satisfying an upper curvature bound. Precisely, our main assumptions are, on one hand, upper bounds on the null curvature of the spacetime and the lapse function of the foliation, and sup-norm bounds on the deformation tensors of the foliation. Our proof is inspired by techniques from Riemannian geometry, and it should be noted that we impose no restriction on the size of the curvature or deformation tensors, and allow for metrics …
We prove several global existence theorems for spacetimes with toroidal or hyperbolic symmetry with respect to a geometrically defined time. More specifically, we prove that generically, the maximal Cauchy development of $T^2$-symmetric initial data with positive cosmological constant $Λ>0$, in the vacuum or with Vlasov matter, may be covered by a global areal foliation with the area of the symmetry orbits tending to zero in the contracting direction. We then prove the same result for surface symmetric spacetimes in the hyperbolic case with Vlasov matter and $Λ\ge 0$. In all cases, there is no…
