We prove several global existence theorems for spacetimes with toroidal or hyperbolic symmetry with respect to a geometrically defined time. More specifically, we prove that generically, the maximal Cauchy development of $T^2$-symmetric initial data with positive cosmological constant $Λ>0$, in the vacuum or with Vlasov matter, may be covered by a global areal foliation with the area of the symmetry orbits tending to zero in the contracting direction. We then prove the same result for surface symmetric spacetimes in the hyperbolic case with Vlasov matter and $Λ\ge 0$. In all cases, there is no restriction on the size of initial data.
Recently Bernd Schmidt has given three explicit examples of spacetimes with toroidal null infinities. In this paper all solutions with a toroidal null infinity within Schmidt's metric ansatz (polarized Gowdy models) are constructed. The members of the family are determined by two smooth functions of one variable. For the unpolarized Gowdy models the same kind of analysis carries through.
We investigate toroidal Marginally Outer Trapped Surfaces (MOTS) and Marginally Outer Trapped Tubes (MOTT) in closed Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometries. They are constructed by embedding Constant Mean Curvature (CMC) Clifford tori in a FLRW spacetime. This construction is used to assess the quality of certain isoperimetric inequalities, recently proved in axial symmetry. Similarly to spherically symmetric MOTS existing in FLRW spacetimes, the toroidal ones are also unstable.
We present an exact solution of Einstein's field equations in toroidal coordinates. The solution has three regions: an interior with a string equation of state; an Israel boundary layer; an exterior with constant isotropic pressure and constant density, locally isometric to anti-de Sitter spacetime. The exterior can be a cosmological vacuum with negative cosmological constant. The size and mass of the toroidal loop depend on the size of the cosmological constant.
We investigate the particle production in a toroidal compactified spacetime due to the expansion of a Friedmann cosmological model in R3 x S1 outside a U(1) local cosmic string. The case of a Friedmann spacetime is also investigated when torsion is incorporated in the connection. We present a generalization to toroidal compactification of p extra dimensions, where the topology is given by R3 x T^p. Some implications are presented and discussed. Besides the dynamics of spacetime, we also investigate in details the physical consequences of the topological transformations.
The vacuum expectation value of the fermionic current is evaluated for a massive spinor field in spacetimes with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions in presence of a constant gauge field. By using the Abel-Plana type summation formula and the zeta function technique we present the fermionic current in two different forms. Non-trivial topology of the background spacetime leads to the Aharonov-Bohm effect on the fermionic current induced by the gauge field. The current is a periodic function of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. In the abse…
We study the quasi-normal modes (QNM) of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of black holes in general relativity whose horizons have toroidal, cylindrical or planar topology in an asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The associated quasinormal frequencies describe the decay in time of the corresponding test field in the vicinities of the black hole. In terms of the AdS/CFT conjecture, the inverse of the frequency is a measure of the dynamical timescale of approach to thermal equilibrium of the corresponding conformal field theory.
Asymptotics of solutions of a perfect fluid when coupled with a cosmological constant in four-dimensional spacetime with toroidal symmetry are studied. In particular, it is found that the problem of self-similar solutions of the first kind for a fluid with the equation of state, $p = k ρ$, can be reduced to solving a master equation of the form, $$ 2 F(q, k)\frac{q''(ξ)}{q'(ξ)} - G(q,k) q'(ξ) = \frac{4}ξ. $$ For $k = 0$ and $k = -1/3$ the general solutions are obtained and their main local and global properties are studied in detail.
We prove a sharp inequality for toroidal hypersurfaces in three and four dimensional Horowitz-Myers geon. This extend previous results on Minkowski inequality in the static spacetime to toroidal surfaces in asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with flat toroidal conformal infinity.
A transitional layer matching the asymptotically flat exterior of a charged, massive toroidal body to an interior with spatially cylindrical symmetry is described. The changes in the geometry, which by themselves would require an energy tensor violating the energy conditions of classical general relativity, are compensated for by an additional strong electric field. Part of its gradient is consumed, depending on how much the exterior toroid departs from local cylindrical symmetry; what is left over can be used to effect further transitions in the cylindrical interior. An example is given of su…
We derive the matching conditions between FLRW and generalised Vaidya spacetimes with spherical, planar or hyperbolic symmetry, across timelike hypersurfaces. We then construct new models of gravitational collapse of FLRW spacetimes with a negative cosmological constant having electromagnetic radiation in the exterior. The final state of the collapse are asymptotically AdS black holes with spherical, toroidal or higher genus topologies. We analyse the collapse dynamics including trapped surface formation, for various examples.
We consider the quantization of the midi-superspace associated with a class of spacetimes with toroidal isometries, but without the compact spatial hypersurfaces of the well-known Gowdy models. By a symmetry reduction, the phase space for the system at the classical level can be identified with that of a free massless scalar field on a fixed background spacetime, thereby providing a simple route to quantization. We are then able to study certain non-perturbative features of the quantum gravitational system. In particular, we examine the quantum geometry of the asymptotic regions of the spaceti…
We establish the positive energy theorem and a Penrose-type inequality for 3-dimensional asymptotically hyperboloidal initial data sets with toroidal infinity, weakly trapped boundary, and satisfying the dominant energy condition. In the umbilic case, a rigidity statement is proven showing that the total energy vanishes precisely when the initial data manifold is isometric to a portion of the canonical slice of the associated Kottler spacetime. Furthermore, we provide a new proof of the recent rigidity theorems of Eichmair-Galloway-Mendes [10] in dimension 3, with weakened hypotheses in certai…
A calculation of the entropy of static, electrically charged, black holes with spherical, toroidal, and hyperbolic compact and oriented horizons, in D spacetime dimensions, is performed. These black holes live in an anti-de Sitter spacetime, i.e., a spacetime with negative cosmological constant. To find the entropy, the approach developed by Solodukhin is followed. The method consists in a redefinition of the variables in the metric, by considering the radial coordinate as a scalar field. Then one performs a 2+(D-2) dimensional reduction, where the (D-2) dimensions are in the angular coordinat…
Lattice formulations of gravity can be used to study non-perturbative aspects of quantum gravity. Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) is a lattice model of gravity that has been used in this way. It has a built-in time foliation but is coordinate-independent in the spatial directions. The higher-order phase transitions observed in the model may be used to define a continuum limit of the lattice theory. Some aspects of the transitions are better studied when the topology of space is toroidal rather than spherical. In addition, a toroidal spatial topology allows us to understand more easily th…
In order to apply variational methods to the action functional for geodesics of a stationary spacetime, some hypotheses, useful to obtain classical Palais-Smale condition, are commonly used: pseudo-coercivity, bounds on certain coefficients of the metric, etc. We prove that these technical assumptions admit a natural interpretation for the conformal structure (causality) of the manifold. As a consequence, any stationary spacetime with a complete timelike Killing vector field and a complete Cauchy hypersurface (thus, globally hyperbolic), is proved to be geodesically connected.
Gravitational collapse of non-spherical symmetric matter leads inevitably to non-static external spacetimes. It is shown here that gravitational collapse of matter with toroidal topology in a toroidal anti-de Sitter background proceeds to form a toroidal black hole. According to the analytical model presented, the collapsing matter absorbs energy in the form of radiation (be it scalar, neutrinos, electromagnetic, or gravitational) from the exterior spacetime. Upon decompactification of one or two coordinates of the torus one gets collapsing solutions of cylindrical or planar matter onto black …
Globally hyperbolic spacetimes admitting infinitely many causal (and timelike) homotopy classes of curves joining two prescribed points, are exhibited and discussed.
It is shown that the initial singularities in spatially compact spacetimes with spherical, plane or hyperbolic symmetry admitting a compact constant mean curvature hypersurface are crushing singularities when the matter content of spacetime is described by the Vlasov equation (collisionless matter) or the wave equation (massless scalar field). In the spherically symmetric case it is further shown that if the spacetime admits a maximal slice then there are crushing singularities both in the past and in the future. The essential properties of the matter models chosen are that their energy-moment…
We consider the Einstein flow on a product manifold with one factor being a compact quotient of 3-dimensional hyperbolic space without boundary and the other factor being a flat torus of fixed arbitrary dimension. We consider initial data symmetric with respect to the toroidal directions. We obtain effective Einsteinian field equations coupled to a wave map type and a Maxwell type equation by the Kaluza-Klein reduction. The Milne universe solves those field equations when the additional parts arising from the toroidal dimensions are chosen constant. We prove future stability of the Milne unive…
The folk questions in Lorentzian Geometry, which concerns the smoothness of time functions and slicings by Cauchy hypersurfaces, are solved by giving simple proofs of: (a) any globally hyperbolic spacetime $(M,g)$ admits a smooth time function $τ$ whose levels are spacelike Cauchy hyperfurfaces and, thus, also a smooth global splitting $M= \R \times {\cal S}$, $g= - β(τ,x) dτ^2 + \bar g_τ$, (b) if a spacetime $M$ admits a (continuous) time function $t$ (i.e., it is stably causal) then it admits a smooth (time) function $τ$ with timelike gradient $\nabla τ$ on all $M$.
We show that the definition of global hyperbolicity in terms of the compactness of the causal diamonds and non-total imprisonment can be extended to spacetimes with continuous metrics, while retaining all of the equivalences to other notions of global hyperbolicity. In fact, global hyperbolicity is equivalent to the compactness of the space of causal curves and to the existence of a Cauchy hypersurface. Furthermore, global hyperbolicity implies causal simplicity, stable causality and the existence of maximal curves connecting any two causally related points.
Globally hyperbolic spacetimes with timelike boundary $(\overline{M} = M \cup \partial M, g)$ are the natural class of spacetimes where regular boundary conditions (eventually asymptotic, if $\overline{M}$ is obtained by means of a conformal embedding) can be posed. $\partial M$ represents the naked singularities and can be identified with a part of the intrinsic causal boundary. Apart from general properties of $\partial M$, the splitting of any globally hyperbolic $(\overline{M},g)$ as an orthogonal product ${\mathbb R}\times \barΣ$ with Cauchy slices with boundary $\{t\}\times \barΣ$ is pro…
An important question in mathematical relativity theory is that of the nature of spacetime singularities. The equations of general relativity, the Einstein equations, are essentially hyperbolic in nature and the study of spacetime singularities is naturally related to blow-up phenomena for nonlinear hyperbolic systems. These connections are explained and recent progress in applying the theory of hyperbolic equations in this field is presented. A direction which has turned out to be fruitful is that of constructing large families of solutions of the Einstein equations with singularities of a si…
Recent work by the authors led to the development of a mathematical theory dealing with `second--order hyperbolic Fuchsian systems', as we call them. In the present paper, we adopt a physical standpoint and discuss the implications of this theory which provides one with a new tool to tackle the Einstein equations of general relativity (under certain symmetry assumptions). Specifically, we formulate the `Fuchsian singular initial value problem' and apply our general analysis to the broad class of vacuum Gowdy spacetimes with spatial toroidal topology. Our main focus is on providing a detailed d…
We give an example of a spacetime with a continuous metric which is globally hyperbolic and exhibits causal bubbling. The metric moreover splits orthogonally into a timelike and a spacelike part. We discuss our example in the context of energy conditions and the recently introduced synthetic timelike curvature-dimension (TCD) condition. In particular we observe that the TCD-condition does not, by itself, prevent causal bubbling.
Minkowski space is the local model of 3 dimensionnal flat spacetimes. Recent progress in the description of globally hyperbolic flat spacetimes showed strong link between Lorentzian geometry and Teichm{ü}ller space. We notice that Lorentzian generalisations of conical singularities are useful for the endeavours of descripting flat spacetimes, creating stronger links with hyperbolic geometry and compactifying spacetimes. In particular massive particles and extreme BTZ singular lines arise naturally. This paper is three-fold. First, prove background local properties which will be useful for futu…
Here we prove a global existence theorem for the solutions of the semi-linear wave equation with critical non-linearity admitting a positive definite Hamiltonian. Formulating a parametrix for the wave equation in a globally hyperbolic curved spacetime, we derive an apriori pointwise bound for the solution of the nonlinear wave equation in terms of the initial energy, from which the global existence follows in a straightforward way. This is accomplished in two steps. First, based on Moncrief's light cone formulation we derive an expression for the scalar field in terms of integrals over the pas…
Chernov-Nemirovski observed that the existence of a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metric on a (3 + 1)-spacetime pins down a smooth structure on the underlying 4-manifold. In this paper, we point out that the diffeomorphism type of a globally hyperbolic (n + 1)-spacetime is determined by the h-cobordism class of its Cauchy surface, hence extending Chernov-Nemirovski's observation to arbitrary dimensions.
The motion of charged particles in spacetimes containing a submanifold of constant positive or negative curvature is considered, with the electromagnetic tensor proportional to the volume two-form form of the submanifold. In the positive curvature case, this describes spherically symmetric spacetimes with a magnetic monopole, while in the negative curvature case, it is a hyperbolic spacetime with magnetic field uniform along hyperbolic surfaces. Constants of motion are found by considering Poisson brackets defined on a phase space with gauge-covariant momenta. In the spherically-symmetric case…
We identify a class of time-periodic linear symmetric hyperbolic equations that are finite codimension stable, because an associated operator has compact resolvent, sufficiently far to the right in the complex plane. This paper is an attempt to capture abstractly the observation in numerical general relativity that some discretely self-similar spacetimes, such as Choptuik's critical spacetime, are finite codimension stable.
Recent evidence indicates that the Universe is open, i.e., spatially hyperbolic, longstanding theoretical preferences to the contrary notwithstanding. This makes it possible to select a vacuum state, Fock space, and particle definition for a quantized field, by requiring concordance with ordinary flat-spacetime theory at late times. The particle-number basis states thus identified span the physical state space of the field at all times. This construction is demonstrated here explicitly for a massive, minimally coupled, linear scalar field in an open, radiation-dominated Friedmann-Robertson-Wal…
The Cauchy slicings for globally hyperbolic spacetimes and their relation with the causal boundary are surveyed and revisited, starting at the seminal conformal boundary constructions by R. Penrose. Our study covers: (1) adaptive possibilities and techniques for their Cauchy slicings, (2) global hyperbolicity of sliced spacetimes, (3) critical review on the conformal and causal boundaries for a globally hyperbolic spacetime, and (4) procedures to compute the causal boundary of a Cauchy temporal splitting by using isocausal comparison with a static product. New simple counterexamples on $\mathb…
We prove that global hyperbolicity is stable in the interval topology on the spacetime metrics. We also prove that every globally hyperbolic spacetime admits a Cauchy hypersurface which remains Cauchy under small perturbations of the spacetime metric. Moreover, we prove that if the spacetime admits a complete timelike Killing field, then the light cones can be widened preserving both global hyperbolicity and the Killing property of the field.
We show the rigid singularity theorem, that is, a globally hyperbolic spacetime satisfying the strong energy condition and containing past trapped sets, either is timelike geodesically incomplete or splits isometrically as space $\times$ time. This result is related to Yau's Lorentzian splitting conjecture.
This is the second part of a series devoted to the singular initial value problem for second-order hyperbolic Fuchsian systems. In the first part, we defined and investigated this general class of systems, and we established a well-posedness theory in weighted Sobolev spaces. This theory is applied here to the vacuum Einstein equations for Gowdy spacetimes admitting, by definition, two Killing fields satisfying certain geometric conditions. We recover, by more direct and simpler arguments, the well-posedness results established earlier by Rendall and collaborators. In addition, in this paper w…
This paper has been withdrawn because the part concerning the definition of global hyperbolicity has already been included in an expanded and clearer way in gr-qc/0611138. The remainder will be also extended and posted.
We briefly review the current status of the algebraic approach to quantum field theory on globally hyperbolic spacetimes, both axiomatic -- for general field theories, and constructive -- for a linear Klein-Gordon model. We recall the concept of F-locality, introduced in the latter context in BS Kay: Rev. Math. Phys., Special Issue, 167-195 (1992) and explain how it can be formulated at an axiomatic level for a general field theory (as a condition on algebras-with-net-structure) on both globally hyperbolic and non globally hyperbolic spacetimes. We also discuss the current status of the questi…
Some recent results obtained by the author and collaborators about QFT in asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity are summarized and reviewed. In particular it is focused on the physical properties of ground states in the bulk induced by the BMS-invariant state defined at null infinity.
In a globally hyperbolic spacetime any pair of chronologically related events admits a connecting geodesic. We present two theorems which prove that, more generally, under weak assumptions, given a charge-to-mass ratio there is always a connecting solution of the Lorentz force equation having that ratio. A geometrical interpretation of the charged-particle action is given which shows that the constructed solutions are maximizing.
This chapter is an up-to-date account of results on globally hyperbolic spacetimes, and serves several purposes. We begin with the exposition of results from a foundational level, where the main tools are order theory and general topology, we continue with results of a more geometric nature, and we conclude with results that are related to current research in theoretical physics. In each case, we list a number of open questions and formulate, for a class of spacetimes, an interesting connection between global hyperbolicity of a manifold and the geodesic completeness of its corresponding space-…
We demonstrate that high Tc superconductors exhibit hyperbolic metamaterial behavior in the far infrared and THz frequency ranges. In the THz range the hyperbolic behavior occurs only in the normal state, while no propagating modes exist in the superconducting state. Wave equation, which describes propagation of extraordinary light inside a hyperbolic metamaterial exhibits 2+1 dimensional Lorentz symmetry. The role of time in the corresponding effective 3D Minkowski spacetime is played by the spatial coordinate aligned perpendicular to the copper oxide layers. Such superconductor-based hyperbo…
Sonic point/photon sphere (SP/PS) correspondence is a theoretical phenomenon which appears in fluid dynamics on curved spacetime and its existence has been recently proved in quite wide situations as theorems. The theorems state that a sonic point (SP) of radiation fluid flow must be on an unstable photon sphere (PS) when the fluid flows radially or rotationally on an equatorial plane in spherically symmetric spacetime of arbitrary dimensions. In this paper, we investigate SP/PS correspondence in spherically, planarly and hyperbolically symmetric spacetime. As the corresponding objects of phot…
What restrictions are there on a spacetime for which the Ricci curvature is such as to produce convergence of geodesics (such as the preconditions for the Singularity Theorems) but for which there are no singularities? We answer this question for a restricted class of spacetimes: static, geodesically complete, and globally hyperbolic. The answer is that, in at least one spacelike direction, the Ricci curvature must fall off at a rate inversely quadratic in a naturally-occurring Riemannian metric on the space of static observers. Along the way, we establish some global results on the static obs…
Reasonable spacetimes are non-compact and of dimension larger than two. We show that these spacetimes are globally hyperbolic if and only if the causal diamonds are compact. That is, there is no need to impose the causality condition, as it can be deduced. We also improve the definition of global hyperbolicity for the non-regular theory (non $C^{1,1}$ metric) and for general cone structures by proving the following convenient characterization for upper semi-continuous cone distributions: causality and the causally convex hull of compact sets is compact. In this case the causality condition can…
The geodesics equations on de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes of any dimensions, are the starting point for deriving the general form of the Boltzmann equation in terms of conserved quantities. The simple equation for the non-equilibrium Marle and Anderson-Witting models are derived and the distributions of the Boltzmann-Marle model on these manifolds are written down first in terms of conserved quantities and then as functions of canonical variables.
The initial value problem is well-defined on a class of spacetimes broader than the globally hyperbolic geometries for which existence and uniqueness theorems are traditionally proved. Simple examples are the time-nonorientable spacetimes whose orientable double cover is globally hyperbolic. These spacetimes have generalized Cauchy surfaces on which smooth initial data sets yield unique solutions. A more difficult problem is to characterize the class of spacetimes with closed timelike curves that admit a well-posed initial value problem. Examples of spacetimes with closed timelike curves are g…
We set up the singular initial value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic Fuchsian systems of first order and establish an existence and uniqueness theory for this problem with smooth data and smooth coefficients (and with even lower regularity). We apply this theory in order to show the existence of smooth (generally not analytic) T2-symmetric solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations, which exhibit AVTD (asymptotically velocity term dominated) behavior in the neighborhood of their singularities and are polarized or half-polarized.
We evaluate the Hadamard function and the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor for a massless conformally coupled scalar field in $(D+1)$-dimensional de Sitter (dS) spacetime foliated by spatial sections of negative constant curvature. It is assumed that the field is prepared in the hyperbolic vacuum state. An integral representation for the difference of the Hadamard functions corresponding to the hyperbolic and Bunch-Davies vacua is provided that is well adapted for the evaluation of the expectation values in the coincidence limit. It is shown that…
The mathematical formalism for linear quantum field theory on curved spacetime depends in an essential way on the assumption of global hyperbolicity. Physically, what lie at the foundation of any formalism for quantization in curved spacetime are the canonical commutation relations, imposed on the field operators evaluated at a global Cauchy surface. In the algebraic formulation of linear quantum field theory, the canonical commutation relations are restated in terms of a well-defined symplectic structure on the space of smooth solutions, and the local field algebra is constructed as the Weyl …
In this second paper, I construct a limit space of a Cauchy sequence of globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In the second section, I work gradually towards a construction of the limit space. I prove the limit space is unique up to isometry. I als show that, in general, the limit space has quite complicated causal behaviour. This work prepares the final paper in which I shall study in more detail properties of the limit space and the moduli space of (compact) globally hyperbolic spacetimes (cobordisms). As a fait divers, I give in this paper a suitable definition of dimension of a Lorentz space in …
In this work we find analytical solutions to the null geodesics in the hyperbolic topological black hole spacetime of conformal Weyl gravity in an invariant $2$-plane given by the orbits of an azimuthal Killing vector. Exact expressions for the (non-compact) horizons are found, which depend on the cosmological constant and the coupling constants of conformal Weyl gravity. The angular motion is examined qualitatively by means of an effective potential; quantitatively, the equation of motion is solved in terms of the $\wp$-Weierstraß elliptic function. Thus, we find the deflection angle for phot…
We study real linear scalar field theory on two simple non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes containing closed timelike curves within the framework proposed by Kay for algebraic quantum field theory on non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this context, a spacetime (M,g) is said to be `F-quantum compatible' with a field theory if it admits a *-algebra of local observables for that theory which satisfies a locality condition known as `F-locality'. Kay's proposal is that, in formulating algebraic quantum field theory on $(M,g)$, F-locality should be imposed as a necessary condition on the *-algebr…
Let $X$ be a $(2+1)$-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime with a Cauchy surface $Σ$ whose universal cover is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^2$. We provide empirical evidence suggesting that the Jones polynomial detects causality in $X$. We introduce a new invariant of certain tangles related to the Conway polynomial, and prove that the Conway polynomial does not detect the connected sum of two Hopf links among relevant 3-component links, which suggests that the Conway polynomial does not detect causality in the scenario described.
