Reasonable spacetimes are non-compact and of dimension larger than two. We show that these spacetimes are globally hyperbolic if and only if the causal diamonds are compact. That is, there is no need to impose the causality condition, as it can be deduced. We also improve the definition of global hyperbolicity for the non-regular theory (non $C^{1,1}$ metric) and for general cone structures by proving the following convenient characterization for upper semi-continuous cone distributions: causality and the causally convex hull of compact sets is compact. In this case the causality condition cannot be dropped, independently of the spacetime dimension. Similar results are obtained for causal simplicity.
We describe a Lorentzian manifold that is globally hyperbolic and geodesically complete, but such that the (minimally coupled) Klein-Gordon operator with the standard domain is not essentially self-adjoint.
We show the rigid singularity theorem, that is, a globally hyperbolic spacetime satisfying the strong energy condition and containing past trapped sets, either is timelike geodesically incomplete or splits isometrically as space $\times$ time. This result is related to Yau's Lorentzian splitting conjecture.
Chernov-Nemirovski observed that the existence of a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metric on a (3 + 1)-spacetime pins down a smooth structure on the underlying 4-manifold. In this paper, we point out that the diffeomorphism type of a globally hyperbolic (n + 1)-spacetime is determined by the h-cobordism class of its Cauchy surface, hence extending Chernov-Nemirovski's observation to arbitrary dimensions.
Globally hyperbolic spacetimes admitting infinitely many causal (and timelike) homotopy classes of curves joining two prescribed points, are exhibited and discussed.
In this article, existence results concerning temporal functions with additional properties on a globally hyperbolic manifold are obtained. These properties are certain bounds on geometric quantities as lapse and shift. The results are linked to completeness properties and the existence of closed isometric embeddings in Minkowski spaces.
Minkowski space is the local model of 3 dimensionnal flat spacetimes. Recent progress in the description of globally hyperbolic flat spacetimes showed strong link between Lorentzian geometry and Teichm{ü}ller space. We notice that Lorentzian generalisations of conical singularities are useful for the endeavours of descripting flat spacetimes, creating stronger links with hyperbolic geometry and compactifying spacetimes. In particular massive particles and extreme BTZ singular lines arise naturally. This paper is three-fold. First, prove background local properties which will be useful for futu…
Under mild assumptions, we remove all traces of the axiom of choice from the construction of the maximal globally hyperbolic Cauchy development in general relativity. The construction relies on the notion of direct union manifolds, which we review. The construction given is very general: any physical theory with a suitable geometric representation (in particular all classical fields), and such that a strong notion of "local existence and uniqueness" of solutions for the corresponding initial value problem is available, is amenable to the same treatment.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the wave equation on a non-globally hyperbolic manifold of the special form (Minkowski plane with a handle) containing closed timelike curves (time machines). We prove that the classical solution of the Cauchy problem exists and is unique if and only if the initial data satisfy to some set of additional conditions.
We introduce a class of space-times modeling singular events such as evaporating black holes and topology changes, which we dub as semi-globally hyperbolic space-times. On these space-times we aim to study the existence of reasonable quantum field theories. We establish a notion of linear scalar quantum field theories on these space-times, show how such a theory might be constructed and introduce notions of global dynamics on these theories. Applying these constructions to both black hole evaporation and topology changing space-times, we find that existence of algebras can be relatively easily…
Let $X$ be a $(2+1)$-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime with a Cauchy surface $Σ$ whose universal cover is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^2$. We provide empirical evidence suggesting that the Jones polynomial detects causality in $X$. We introduce a new invariant of certain tangles related to the Conway polynomial, and prove that the Conway polynomial does not detect the connected sum of two Hopf links among relevant 3-component links, which suggests that the Conway polynomial does not detect causality in the scenario described.
We investigate a generalization of the so-called metric splitting of globally hyperbolic space-times to non-smooth Lorentzian manifolds and show the existence of this metric splitting for a class of wave-type space-times. Our approach is based on smooth approximations of non-smooth space-times by families (or sequences) of globally hyperbolic space-times. In the same setting we indicate as an application the extension of a previous result on the Cauchy problem for the wave equation.
We give an example of a spacetime with a continuous metric which is globally hyperbolic and exhibits causal bubbling. The metric moreover splits orthogonally into a timelike and a spacelike part. We discuss our example in the context of energy conditions and the recently introduced synthetic timelike curvature-dimension (TCD) condition. In particular we observe that the TCD-condition does not, by itself, prevent causal bubbling.
We give a functional analytic construction of the fermionic projector on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold of finite lifetime. The integral kernel of the fermionic projector is represented by a two-point distribution on the manifold. By introducing an ultraviolet regularization, we get to the framework of causal fermion systems. The connection to the "negative-energy solutions" of the Dirac equation and to the WKB approximation is explained and quantified by a detailed analysis of closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes.
We prove that semiclassical gravity in conformally static, globally hyperbolic spacetimes with a massless, conformally coupled Klein-Gordon field is well posed, when viewed as a coupled theory for the dynamical conformal factor of the metric and the Klein-Gordon theory. Namely, it admits unique and stable solutions whenever constrained fourth-order initial data for the conformal factor and suitably defined Hadamard initial data for the Klein-Gordon state are provided on a spacelike Cauchy surface. As no spacetime symmetries are imposed on the conformal factor, the present result implies that, …
We develop a rigorous method to parametrize complex structures for Klein-Gordon theory in globally hyperbolic spacetimes that satisfy a completeness condition. The complex structures are conserved under time-evolution and implement unitary quantizations. They can be interpreted as corresponding to global choices of vacuum. The main ingredient in our construction is a system of operator differential equations. We provide a number of theorems ensuring that all ingredients and steps in the construction are well-defined. We apply the method to exhibit natural quantizations for certain classes of g…
We prove existence and uniqueness of maximal global hyperbolic developments of vacuum general relativistic initial data sets with initial data (g,K) in Sobolev spaces $H^s\oplus H^{s-1}$ with integer s > n/2 +1.
We give an introduction to the techniques from microlocal analysis that have successfully been applied in the investigation of Hadamard states of free quantum field theories on curved spacetimes. The calculation of the wave front set of the two point function of the free Klein-Gordon field in a Hadamard state is reviewed, and the polarization set of a Hadamard two point function of the free Dirac field on a curved spacetime is calculated.
The previous functional analytic construction of the fermionic projector on globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds is extended to space-times of infinite lifetime. The construction is based on an analysis of families of solutions of the Dirac equation with a varying mass parameter. It makes use of the so-called mass oscillation property which implies that integrating over the mass parameter generates decay of the Dirac wave functions at infinity. We obtain a canonical decomposition of the solution space of the massive Dirac equation into two subspaces, independent of observers or the choice …
We show that the definition of global hyperbolicity in terms of the compactness of the causal diamonds and non-total imprisonment can be extended to spacetimes with continuous metrics, while retaining all of the equivalences to other notions of global hyperbolicity. In fact, global hyperbolicity is equivalent to the compactness of the space of causal curves and to the existence of a Cauchy hypersurface. Furthermore, global hyperbolicity implies causal simplicity, stable causality and the existence of maximal curves connecting any two causally related points.
We show that when a spacetime $\mathcal{M}(=M \cup \partial M)$ is globally hyperbolic with (possibly empty) smooth timelike boundary $\partial M$, a metrizable topology, the closed limit topology (CLT) introduced by F. Hausdorff himself in the 1950's in set theory, can be advantageously adopted on the Geroch-Kronheimer-Penrose causal completion of M, retaining essentially all the good properties of previous topologies in this ambient. In particular, we show that if the globally hyperbolic spacetime $M$ admits a conformal boundary, defined in such broad terms as to include all the standard exa…
This paper has been withdrawn because the part concerning the definition of global hyperbolicity has already been included in an expanded and clearer way in gr-qc/0611138. The remainder will be also extended and posted.
In a globally hyperbolic spacetime any pair of chronologically related events admits a connecting geodesic. We present two theorems which prove that, more generally, under weak assumptions, given a charge-to-mass ratio there is always a connecting solution of the Lorentz force equation having that ratio. A geometrical interpretation of the charged-particle action is given which shows that the constructed solutions are maximizing.
The Cauchy slicings for globally hyperbolic spacetimes and their relation with the causal boundary are surveyed and revisited, starting at the seminal conformal boundary constructions by R. Penrose. Our study covers: (1) adaptive possibilities and techniques for their Cauchy slicings, (2) global hyperbolicity of sliced spacetimes, (3) critical review on the conformal and causal boundaries for a globally hyperbolic spacetime, and (4) procedures to compute the causal boundary of a Cauchy temporal splitting by using isocausal comparison with a static product. New simple counterexamples on $\mathb…
A framework which combines ideas from Connes' noncommutative geometry, or spectral geometry, with recent ideas on generally covariant quantum field theory, is proposed in the present work. A certain type of spectral geometries modelling (possibly noncommutative) globally hyperbolic spacetimes is introduced in terms of so-called globally hyperbolic spectral triples. The concept is further generalized to a category of globally hyperbolic spectral geometries whose morphisms describe the generalization of isometric embeddings. Then a local generally covariant quantum field theory is introduced as …
Some recent results obtained by the author and collaborators about QFT in asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity are summarized and reviewed. In particular it is focused on the physical properties of ground states in the bulk induced by the BMS-invariant state defined at null infinity.
The classical definition of {\em global hyperbolicity} for a spacetime $(M,g)$ comprises two conditions: (A) compactness of the diamonds $J^+(p)\cap J^-(q)$, and (B) strong causality. Here we show that condition (B) can be replaced just by causality. In fact, we show first that the classical definition of causal simplicity (which impose to be distinguishing, apart from the closedness of $J^+(p)$, $J^-(q)$) can be weakened in causal instead of distinguishing. So, the full consistency of the causal ladder (recently proved by the authors in a definitive way) yields directly the result.
It is observed that on many 4-manifolds there is a unique smooth structure underlying a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric. For instance, every contractible smooth 4-manifold admitting a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric is diffeomorphic to the standard $\R^4$. Similarly, a smooth 4-manifold homeomorphic to the product of a closed oriented 3-manifold $N$ and $\R$ and admitting a globally hyperbolic Lorentz metric is in fact diffeomorphic to $N\times \R$. Thus one may speak of a censorship imposed by the global hyperbolicty assumption on the possible smooth structures on $(3+1)$-dimensional sp…
The thesis investigates the locality axiom of general local covariance for Abelian gauge theories. Two models, Maxwell $k$-forms (higher analogues of the electromagnetic vector potential) and the $U(1)$ Yang-Mills model are analyzed over globally hyperbolic spacetimes. Our attention is mainly focused on the locality axiom of general local covariance, which states that a causal embedding between spacetimes should induce an inclusion at the level of observables. Both at the classical and at the quantum level, it turns out that the models we consider violate locality depending on certain global f…
In this second paper, I construct a limit space of a Cauchy sequence of globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In the second section, I work gradually towards a construction of the limit space. I prove the limit space is unique up to isometry. I als show that, in general, the limit space has quite complicated causal behaviour. This work prepares the final paper in which I shall study in more detail properties of the limit space and the moduli space of (compact) globally hyperbolic spacetimes (cobordisms). As a fait divers, I give in this paper a suitable definition of dimension of a Lorentz space in …
Connes' functional formula of the Riemannian distance is generalized to the Lorentzian case using the so-called Lorentzian distance, the d'Alembert operator and the causal functions of a globally hyperbolic spacetime. As a step of the presented machinery, a proof of the almost-everywhere smoothness of the Lorentzian distance considered as a function of one of the two arguments is given. Afterwards, using a $C^*$-algebra approach, the spacetime causal structure and the Lorentzian distance are generalized into noncommutative structures giving rise to a Lorentzian version of part of Connes' nonco…
We begin a systematic study of Quantum Energy Inequalities (QEIs) in relation to local covariance. We define notions of locally covariant QEIs of both 'absolute' and 'difference' types and show that existing QEIs satisfy these conditions. Local covariance permits us to place constraints on the renormalised stress-energy tensor in one spacetime using QEIs derived in another, in subregions where the two spacetimes are isometric. This is of particular utility where one of the two spacetimes exhibits a high degree of symmetry and the QEIs are available in simple closed form. Various general applic…
What restrictions are there on a spacetime for which the Ricci curvature is such as to produce convergence of geodesics (such as the preconditions for the Singularity Theorems) but for which there are no singularities? We answer this question for a restricted class of spacetimes: static, geodesically complete, and globally hyperbolic. The answer is that, in at least one spacelike direction, the Ricci curvature must fall off at a rate inversely quadratic in a naturally-occurring Riemannian metric on the space of static observers. Along the way, we establish some global results on the static obs…
The goal of the present paper is three-fold. First is to clarify the connection between the dominant energy condition and hyperbolicity properties of Lagrangian field theories. Second is to provide further analysis on the breakdown of hyperbolicity for the Skyrme model, sharpening the results of Crutchfield and Bell and comparing against a result of Gibbons, and provide a local well-posedness result for the dynamical problem in the Skyrme model. Third is to provide a short summary of the framework of regular hyperbolicity of Christodoulou for the relativity community. In the process, a general…
We give a complete framework for the Gupta-Bleuler quantization of the free electromagnetic field on globally hyperbolic space-times. We describe one-particle structures that give rise to states satisfying the microlocal spectrum condition. The field algebras in the so-called Gupta-Bleuler representations satisfy the time-slice axiom, and the corresponding vacuum states satisfy the microlocal spectrum condition. We also give an explicit construction of ground states on ultrastatic space-times. Unlike previous constructions, our method does not require a spectral gap or the absence of zero mode…
Geroch's theorem about the splitting of globally hyperbolic spacetimes is a central result in global Lorentzian Geometry. Nevertheless, this result was obtained at a topological level, and the possibility to obtain a metric (or, at least, smooth) version has been controversial since its publication in 1970. In fact, this problem has remained open until a definitive proof, recently provided by the authors. Our purpose is to summarize the history of the problem, explain the smooth and metric splitting results (including smoothability of time functions in stably causal spacetimes), and sketch the…
In this talk we shall show a perfect fluid cosmological model and its properties. The model possesses an orthogonally transitive abelian two-dimensional group of isometries that corresponds to cylindrical symmetry. The matter content is a stiff fluid that satisfies the energy and generic conditions. The metric is not separable in comoving coordinates for the fluid. The curvature invariants are shown to be regular everywhere in the coordinate chart and also indicate that the spacetime is asymptotically flat. Furthermore the causal geodesics are studied in order to determine that they are comple…
A simple proof is given that every globally hyperbolic spacetime admits a smooth Cauchy steep time function. This result is useful in order to show that globally hyperbolic spacetimes can be isometrically embedded in Minkowski spacetimes and that they spit as a product. The proof is based on a recent result on the differentiability of Geroch's volume functions.
It is shown here that symmetric hyperbolicity, which guarantees well-posedness, leads to a set of two inequalities for matrices whose elements are determined by a given theory. As a part of the calculation, carried out in a mostly-covariant formalism, the general form for the symmetrizer, valid for a general Lagrangian theory, was obtained. When applied to nonlinear electromagnetism linearly coupled to curvature, the inequalities lead to strong constraints on the relevant quantities, which were illustrated with applications to particular cases. The examples show that non-linearity leads to con…
Recently ({\em Class. Quant. Grav.} {\bf 20} 625-664) the concept of {\em causal mapping} between spacetimes --essentially equivalent in this context to the {\em chronological map} one in abstract chronological spaces--, and the related notion of {\em causal structure}, have been introduced as new tools to study causality in Lorentzian geometry. In the present paper, these tools are further developed in several directions such as: (i) causal mappings --and, thus, abstract chronological ones-- do not preserve two levels of the standard hierarchy of causality conditions (however, they preserve t…
Globally hyperbolic spacetimes with timelike boundary $(\overline{M} = M \cup \partial M, g)$ are the natural class of spacetimes where regular boundary conditions (eventually asymptotic, if $\overline{M}$ is obtained by means of a conformal embedding) can be posed. $\partial M$ represents the naked singularities and can be identified with a part of the intrinsic causal boundary. Apart from general properties of $\partial M$, the splitting of any globally hyperbolic $(\overline{M},g)$ as an orthogonal product ${\mathbb R}\times \barΣ$ with Cauchy slices with boundary $\{t\}\times \barΣ$ is pro…
The initial value problem is well-defined on a class of spacetimes broader than the globally hyperbolic geometries for which existence and uniqueness theorems are traditionally proved. Simple examples are the time-nonorientable spacetimes whose orientable double cover is globally hyperbolic. These spacetimes have generalized Cauchy surfaces on which smooth initial data sets yield unique solutions. A more difficult problem is to characterize the class of spacetimes with closed timelike curves that admit a well-posed initial value problem. Examples of spacetimes with closed timelike curves are g…
We study real linear scalar field theory on two simple non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes containing closed timelike curves within the framework proposed by Kay for algebraic quantum field theory on non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this context, a spacetime (M,g) is said to be `F-quantum compatible' with a field theory if it admits a *-algebra of local observables for that theory which satisfies a locality condition known as `F-locality'. Kay's proposal is that, in formulating algebraic quantum field theory on $(M,g)$, F-locality should be imposed as a necessary condition on the *-algebr…
The folk questions in Lorentzian Geometry, which concerns the smoothness of time functions and slicings by Cauchy hypersurfaces, are solved by giving simple proofs of: (a) any globally hyperbolic spacetime $(M,g)$ admits a smooth time function $τ$ whose levels are spacelike Cauchy hyperfurfaces and, thus, also a smooth global splitting $M= \R \times {\cal S}$, $g= - β(τ,x) dτ^2 + \bar g_τ$, (b) if a spacetime $M$ admits a (continuous) time function $t$ (i.e., it is stably causal) then it admits a smooth (time) function $τ$ with timelike gradient $\nabla τ$ on all $M$.
Classically, the dynamics in a non-globally hyperbolic spacetime is ill posed. Previously, a prescription was given for defining dynamics in static spacetimes in terms of a second order operator acting on a Hilbert space defined on static slices. The present work extends this result by giving a similar prescription for defining dynamics in stationary spacetimes obeying certain mild assumptions. The prescription is defined in terms of a first order operator acting on a different Hilbert space from the one used in the static prescription. It preserves the important properties of the earlier one:…
The mathematical formalism for linear quantum field theory on curved spacetime depends in an essential way on the assumption of global hyperbolicity. Physically, what lie at the foundation of any formalism for quantization in curved spacetime are the canonical commutation relations, imposed on the field operators evaluated at a global Cauchy surface. In the algebraic formulation of linear quantum field theory, the canonical commutation relations are restated in terms of a well-defined symplectic structure on the space of smooth solutions, and the local field algebra is constructed as the Weyl …
This is the last article in a series of three initiated by the second author. We elaborate on the concepts and theorems constructed in the previous articles. In particular, we prove that the GH and the GGH uniformities previously introduced on the moduli space of isometry classes of globally hyperbolic spacetimes are different, but the Cauchy sequences which give rise to well-defined limit spaces coincide. We then examine properties of the strong metric introduced earlier on each spacetime, and answer some questions concerning causality of limit spaces. Progress is made towards a general defin…
We extend the classical Avez-Seifert theorem to trajectories of charged test particles with fixed charge-to-mass ratio. In particular, given two events x_{0} and x_{1}, with x_{1} in the chronological future of x_{0}, we find an interval I=]-R,R[ such that for any q/m in I there is a timelike connecting solution of the Lorentz force equation. Moreover, under the assumption that there is no null geodesic connecting x_0 and x_1, we prove that to any value of |q/m| there correspond at least two connecting timelike solutions which coincide only if they are geodesics.
In Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, for a group of warped product spacetimes, we get a generalized master equation for the perturbation of tensor type. We show that the "effective metric" or "acoustic metric" for the tensor perturbation equation can be defined even without a static condition. Since this master equation does not depend on the mode expansion, the hyperbolicity and causality of the tensor perturbation equation can be investigated for every mode of the perturbation. Based on the master equation, we study the hyperbolicity and causality for all relavent vacuum solutions of this theor…
We apply the ADM approach to obtain a Hamiltonian description of the Einstein-Hilbert action. In doing so we add four new ingredients: (i) We eliminate the diffeomorphism constraints. (ii) We replace the densities $\sqrt g$ by a function $\f(x,g_{ij})$ with the help of a fixed metric $χ$ such that the Lagrangian and hence the Hamiltonian are functions. (iii) We consider the Lagrangian to be defined in a fiber bundle with base space $\so$ and fibers F(x) which can be treated as Lorentzian manifolds equipped with the Wheeler-DeWitt metric. It turns out that the fibers are globally hyperbolic. (i…
We observe that Khovanov homology detects causality in $(2+1)$-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetimes whose Cauchy surface is homeomorphic to $\mathbb R^2$
