In this note we study some sequences whose ratio converges to the square root of rationals. Further we analyze some related sequences obtained when the above mentioned ratio simplifies.
In 1984, K. Mahler asked how well elements in the Cantor middle third set can be approximated by rational numbers from that set, and by rational numbers outside of that set. We consider more general missing digit sets $C$ and construct numbers in $C$ that are arbitrarily well approximable by rationals in $C$, but badly approximable by rationals outside of $C$. More precisely, we construct them so that all but finitely many of their convergents lie in $C$.
Does the $n^{th}$ root of the diagonal Ramsey number converge to a finite limit? The answer is yes. A sequence can be shown to converge if it satifies convergence conditions other than or besides monotonicity. We show such a property holds for which the sequence of $n^{th}$ roots does converge, even if one has no a priori knowledge as to whether the sequence is monotone or not. We show also the $n^{th}$ root of the diagonal Ramsey number can be expressed as a product of two factors, the first being a known convergent sequence and the second being an absolutely convergent infinite series. One a…
Let $D,Q$ be natural numbers, $(D,Q)=1$, such that $D/Q>1$ and $D/Q$ is not a square. Let $q$ be the smallest divisor of $Q$ such that $Q|\, q^2$. We show that the units $>1$ of the ring $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{Dq^2/Q}]$ are connected with certain convergents of $\sqrt{D/Q}$. Among these units, the units of $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{DQ}]$ play a special role, inasmuch as they correspond to the convergents of $\sqrt{D/Q}$ that occur just before the end of each period. We also show that the last-mentioned units allow reading the (periodic) continued fraction expansion of certain quadratic irrationals from the (…
In this paper the properties of Rédei rational functions are used to derive rational approximations for square roots and both Newton and Padé approximations are given as particular cases. As a consequence, such approximations can be derived directly by power matrices. Moreover, Rédei rational functions are introduced as convergents of particular periodic continued fractions and are applied for approximating square roots in the field of p-adic numbers and to study periodic representations. Using the results over the real numbers, we show how to construct periodic continued fractions and approxi…
In this paper we consider Diophantine equations of the form $f(x)=g(y)$ where $f$ has simple rational roots and $g$ has rational coefficients. We give strict conditions for the cases where the equation has infinitely many solutions in rationals with a bounded denominator. We give examples illustrating that the given conditions are necessary. It turns out that such equations with infinitely many solutions are strongly related to Prouhet-Tarry-Escott tuples. In the special, but important case when $g$ has only simple rational roots as well, we can give a simpler statement. Also we provide an app…
In this paper we characterise univariate rational functions over a number field $\K$ having infinitely many points in the cyclotomic closure $\K^c$ for which the orbit contains a root of unity. Our results are similar to previous results of Dvornicich and Zannier describing all polynomials having infinitely many preperiodic points in $\K^c$.
We study higher-dimensional interlacing Fibonacci sequences, generated via both Chebyshev type functions and $m$-dimensional recurrence relations. For each integer $m$, there exist both rational and integer versions of these sequences, where the underlying prime congruence structures of the rational sequence denominators enables the integer sequence to be recovered. From either the rational or the integer sequences we construct sequences of vectors in $\mathbb{Q}^m$, which converge to irrational algebraic points in $\mathbb{R}^m$. The rational sequence terms can be expressed as simple recurren…
In this paper, we exhibit two matrix representations of the rational roots of generalized Fibonacci polynomials (GFPs) under convolution product, in terms of determinants and permanents, respectively. The underlying root formulas for GFPs and for weighted isobaric polynomials (WIPs), which appeared in an earlier paper by MacHenry and Tudose, make use of two types of operators. These operators are derived from the generating functions for Stirling numbers of the first kind and second kind. Hence we call them Stirling operators. To construct matrix representations of the roots of GFPs, we use th…
This paper contains an algebraic constructive and self-contained account of the invariance rule of the digital root under division for an arbitrary natural basis representation. Both the cases of repeating and non-repeating fractionals are treated. In the preliminary section some known results such as the uniqueness in the representation of a fraction are discussed for both the finite and infinite bases cases. Simple examples are introduced throughout the text for illustrative purposes.
Consider any nonzero univariate polynomial with rational coefficients, presented as an elementary algebraic expression (using only integer exponents). Letting sigma(f) denotes the additive complexity of f, we show that the number of rational roots of f is no more than 15 + sigma(f)^2 (24.01)^{sigma(f)} sigma(f)!. This provides a sharper arithmetic analogue of earlier results of Dima Grigoriev and Jean-Jacques Risler, which gave a bound of C^{sigma(f)^2} for the number of real roots of f, for some constant C with 1<C<32. We extend our new bound to arbitrary finite extensions of the ordinary or …
We show how the theory of linear forms in two logarithms allows one to get effective irrationality measures for $n$-th roots of rational numbers ${a \over b}$, when $a$ is very close to $b$. We give a $p$-adic analogue of this result under the assumption that $a$ is $p$-adically very close to $b$, that is, that a large power of $p$ divides $a-b$. As an application, we solve completely certain families of Thue-Mahler equations. Our results illustrate, admittedly in a very special situation, the strength of the known estimates for linear forms in logarithms.
In this paper we study the number of rational points on curves in an ensemble of abelian covers of the projective line: Let $\ell$ be a prime, $q$ a prime power and consider the ensemble $\mathcal{H}_{g,\ell}$ of $\ell$-cyclic covers of $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ of genus $g$. We assume that $q\not\equiv 0,1\mod \ell$. If $2g+2\ell-2\not\equiv0\mod (\ell-1){\rm ord}_\ell(q)$, then $\mathcal{H}_{g,\ell}$ is empty. Otherwise, the number of rational points on a random curve in $\mathcal{H}_{g,\ell}$ distributes as $\sum_{i=1}^{q+1} X_i$ as $g\to \infty$, where $X_1,\ldots, X_{q+1}$ are i.i.d.\…
Let $μ_{q+1}$ denote the set of $(q+1)$-th roots of unity in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2 }$. We construct permutation polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ by using rational functions of any degree that induce bijections either on $μ_{q+1}$ or between $μ_{q+1}$ and $\mathbb{F}_q \cup \{\infty\}$. In particular, we generalize results from Zieve.
We show that the generating function corresponding to the sequence of denominators of the best rational approximants of a quadratic irrational is a rational function with integer coefficients. Consequently we can compute the Lévy constant of any quadratic irrational explicitly in terms of a finite number of its convergents.
We show that deciding whether a sparse univariate polynomial has a p-adic rational root can be done in NP for most inputs. We also prove a polynomial-time upper bound for trinomials with suitably generic p-adic Newton polygon. We thus improve the best previous complexity upper bound of EXPTIME. We also prove an unconditional complexity lower bound of NP-hardness with respect to randomized reductions for general univariate polynomials. The best previous lower bound assumed an unproved hypothesis on the distribution of primes in arithmetic progression. We also discuss how our results complement …
We generalize a theorem of D. Rohrlich concerning root numbers of elliptic curves over the field of rational numbers. Our result applies to curves of all higher genera over number fields. Namely, under certain conditions which naturally extend the conditions used by D. Rohrlich, we show that the root number associated to a smooth projective curve over a number field F and a complex finite-dimensional irreducible representation of the absolute Galois group of F with real-valued character is equal to 1. In the case where the ground field is the field of rational numbers, we show that our result …
Rational approximations to a square root $\sqrt{k}$ can be produced by iterating the transformation $f(x) = (dx+k)/(x+d)$ starting from $\infty$ for any positive integer $d$. We show that these approximations coincide infinitely often with continued fraction convergents if and only if $4d^2/(k-d^2)$ is an integer, in which case the continued fraction has a rich structure. It consists of the concatenation of the continued fractions of certain explicitly definable rational numbers, and it belongs to one of infinitely many families of continued fractions whose terms vary linearly in two parameter…
A set of real $n$th roots that is pairwise linearly independent over the rationals must also be linearly independent. We show how this result may be extended to more general fields.
Let $\{b(n):n\in\N\}$ be the sequence of coefficients in the Taylor expansion of a rational function $R(X)\in\Q(X)$ and suppose that b(n) is a perfect $d^{\rm th}$ power for all large n. A conjecture of Pisot states that one can choose a $d^{\rm th}$ root a(n) of b(n) such that $\sum a(n)X^n$ is also a rational function. Actually, this is the fundamental case of an analogous statement formulated for fields more general than $\Q$. A number of papers have been devoted to various special cases. In this note we shall completely settle the general case.
In this paper we examine the diophantine equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ where $k$ is a positive integer $\geq 2$, and consider its applications. While the complete solution of the equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ in positive rational numbers is already known when $k=2$ or $3$, till now only one numerical solution of the equation in positive rational numbers has been published when $k=4$, and no nontrivial solution is known when $k \geq 5$. We describe a method of generating infinitely many positive rational solutions of the equation when $k=4$. We use the positive rational solutions of the equation with $k=2,\,…
Given an integer $t\ge 1$, a rational number $g$ and a prime $p\equiv 1({\rm mod} t)$ we say that $g$ is a near-primitive root of index $t$ if $ν_p(g)=0$, and $g$ is of order $(p-1)/t$ modulo $p$. In the case $g$ is not minus a square we compute the density, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), of such primes explicitly in the form $ρ(g)A$, with $ρ(g)$ a rational number and $A$ the Artin constant. We follow in this the approach of Wagstaff, who had dealt earlier with the case where $g$ is not minus a square. The outcome is in complete agreement with the recent determination of the d…
Let k be a number field. It is well known that the set of sequences composed by Taylor coefficients of rational functions over k is closed under component-wise operations, and so it can be equipped with a ring structure. A conjecture due to Pisot asks if (after enlarging the field) one can take d-th roots in this ring, provided d-th roots of coefficients can be taken in k. This was proved true in a preceding paper of the second author; in this article we generalize this result to more general equations, monic in Y, where the former case can be recovered for g(X,Y)=X^d-Y=0. Combining this with …
In this paper, the Hermite problem has been approached finding a periodic representation (by means of periodic rational or integer sequences) for any cubic irrationality. In other words, the problem of writing cubic irrationals as a periodic sequence of rational or integer numbers has been solved. In particular, a periodic multidimensional continued fraction (with pre--period of length 2 and period of length 3) is proved convergent to a given cubic irrationality, by using the algebraic properties of cubic irrationalities and linear recurrent sequences. This multidimensional continued fraction …
We classify all sets of nonzero vectors in $\mathbb{R}^3$ such that the angle formed by each pair is a rational multiple of $π$. The special case of four-element subsets lets us classify all tetrahedra whose dihedral angles are multiples of $π$, solving a 1976 problem of Conway and Jones: there are $2$ one-parameter families and $59$ sporadic tetrahedra, all but three of which are related to either the icosidodecahedron or the $B_3$ root lattice. The proof requires the solution in roots of unity of a $W(D_6)$-symmetric polynomial equation with $105$ monomials (the previous record was $12$ mono…
We show the density of rational points on non-isotrivial elliptic surfaces by studying the variation of the root numbers among the fibers of these surfaces, conditionally to two analytic number theory conjectures (the squarefree conjecture and Chowla's conjecture). This is a weaker statement than the one found in a preprint of Helfgott which proves (under the same assumptions) that the average root number is $0$ when the surface admits a place of multiplicative reduction. However, we use a different technique. The conjectures involved impose a restriction on the degree of the irreducible facto…
Polynomials whose coefficients, roots, and critical points lie in the ring of rational integers are called nice polynomials. In this paper, we present a general method for investigating such polynomials. We extend our results from the ring of rational integers to rings of algebraic integers that are unique factorization domains, with special interest in the ring of Gaussian integers. We apply our method to establish strong properties of nice polynomials whose degree is a prime power. We present a considerable reduction of the system of equations for nice polynomials of arbitrary degree with th…
