Consider any nonzero univariate polynomial with rational coefficients, presented as an elementary algebraic expression (using only integer exponents). Letting sigma(f) denotes the additive complexity of f, we show that the number of rational roots of f is no more than 15 + sigma(f)^2 (24.01)^{sigma(f)} sigma(f)!. This provides a sharper arithmetic analogue of earlier results of Dima Grigoriev and Jean-Jacques Risler, which gave a bound of C^{sigma(f)^2} for the number of real roots of f, for some constant C with 1<C<32. We extend our new bound to arbitrary finite extensions of the ordinary or p-adic rationals, roots of bounded degree over a number field, and geometrically isolated roots of multivariate polynomial systems. We thus extend earlier bounds of Hendrik W. Lenstra, Jr. and the author to encodings more efficient than monomial expansions. We also mention a connection to complexity theory and note that our bounds hold for a broader class of fields.
Let E be an elliptic curve with additive reduction over the p-adic numbers, and let G be the group of p-adic points on E that have good reduction. This paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for G to contain non-trivial p-torsion.
This work is a study of $p$-adic multiple zeta values at roots of unity ($p$MZV$μ_{N}$'s), the $p$-adic periods of the crystalline pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $(\mathbb{P}^{1} - \{0,μ_{N},\infty\})/ \mathbb{F}_{q}$. The main tool is new objects which we call $p$-adic pro-unipotent harmonic actions. In this part IV we define and study $p$-adic analogues of some elementary complex analytic functions which interpolate multiple zeta values at roots of unity such as the multiple zeta functions. The indices of $p$MZV$μ_{N}$'s involve sequences of positive integers ; in this IV-1, by consid…
Dwork's conjecture, now proven by Wan, states that unit root L-functions "coming from geometry" are p-adic meromorphic. In this paper we study the p-adic variation of a family of unit root L-functions coming from a suitable family of toric exponential sums. In this setting, we find that the unit root L-functions each have a unique p-adic unit root. We then study the variation of this unit root over the family of unit root L-functions. Surprisingly, we find that this unit root behaves similarly to the classical case of families of exponential sums. That is, the unit root is essentially a ratio …
We give a sufficient and necessary condition for a p-adic integer to have p-th root in the ring of p-adic integers. The same condition holds clearly for residues modulo p^k. We give a proof that Fermat's last theorem is false for p-adic integers and for residues mod p^k.
In this brief note, we consider p-adic unit roots or poles of L-functions of exponential sums defined over finite fields. In particular, we look at the number of unit roots or poles, and a congruence relation on the units. This raises a question in arithmetic mirror symmetry.
We construct a meromorphic function on the eigencurve that interpolates a square root of the ratio of the central values of two quadratic twists of the $L$-function at classical points.
The L-function of symmetric powers of classical Kloosterman sums is a polynomial whose degree is now known, as well as the complex absolute values of the roots. In this paper, we provide estimates for the p-adic absolute values of these roots. Our method is indirect. We first develop a Dwork-type p-adic cohomology theory for the two-variable infinite symmetric power L-function associated to the Kloosterman family, and then study p-adic estimates of the eigenvalues of Frobenius. A continuity argument then provides the desired p-adic estimates.
We study the roots of a random polynomial over the field of p-adic numbers. For a random monic polynomial with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_p$, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the factorial moments of the number of roots of this polynomial. In addition, we show the probability that a random polynomial of degree $n$ has more than $\log n$ roots is $O\big(n^{-K}\big)$ for some $K > 0$.
The number theoretic analogue of a net in metric geometry suggests new problems and results in combinatorial and additive number theory. For example, for a fixed integer g > 1, the study of h-nets in the additive group of integers with respect to the generating set A_g = {g^i:i=0,1,2,...} requires a knowledge of the word lengths of integers with respect to A_g. A g-adic representation of an integer is described that algorithmically produces a representation of shortest length. Additive complements and additive asymptotic complements are also discussed, together with their associated minimality…
Let $E$ be a rational elliptic curve and let $p$ be an odd prime of additive reduction. Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and fix a positive integer $c$ prime to the conductor of $E$. The main goal of the present article is to define an anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function $Ł$ attached to $E/K$ when $E/\QQ_p$ attains semistable reduction over an abelian extension. We prove that $Ł$ satisfies the expected interpolation properties; namely, we show that if $χ$ is an anticyclotomic character of conductor $cp^n$ then $χ(Ł)$ is equal (up to explicit constants) to $L(E,χ,1)$ or $L'(E,χ,1)$.
We study the roots of a random polynomial over the field of $p$-adic numbers. For a random monic polynomial with i.i.d. coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_p$, we obtain an estimate for the expected number of roots of this polynomial. In particular, if the coefficients take the values $\pm1$ with equal probability, the expected number of $p$-adic roots converges to $\left(p-1\right)/\left(p+1\right)$ as the degree of the polynomial tends to $\infty$.
Let p be a prime number, and let f, g, and h be three modular forms of weights $κ$, $λ$, and $μ$ for $SL(2,\Bbb{Z})$. We suppose $κ\geq λ+ μ$. In joint work with Kudla, one of the authors obtained a formula for the normalized {\it square root} of the value at $s = {1/2}(κ+ λ+ μ- 2)$ (the {\it central critical value}) of the triple product $L(s,f,g,h)$. We apply this formula, letting $f$ (and thus $κ$) vary in a $p$-adic analytic family ${\bold f}$ of ordinary modular forms (a Hida family). By modifying Hida's construction of the $p$-adic Rankin-Selberg convolution, we obtain a generalized $p$-…
Let $p$ be a prime number and $M$ the extension field of a $p$-adic field $K$ obtained by adjoining all $p$-power roots of all elements of $K$. In this paper, we show that there exists a constant $C$, depending only on $K$ and an integer $g>0$, which satisfies the following property:If $A_{/K}$ is a $g$-dimensional CM abelian variety, then the order of the torsion subgroup of $A(M)$ is bounded by $C$.
We study the repartition of the roots of a random p-adic polynomial in an algebraic closure of Qp.We prove that the mean number of roots generating a fixed finite extension K of Qp depends mostly on the discriminant of K, an extension containing less roots when it gets more ramified. We prove further that, for any positive integer r, a random p-adic polynomial of sufficiently large degree has about r roots on average in extensions of degree at most r.Beyond the mean, we also study higher moments and correlations between the number of roots in two given subsets of Qp (or, more generally, of a f…
We show how the theory of linear forms in two logarithms allows one to get effective irrationality measures for $n$-th roots of rational numbers ${a \over b}$, when $a$ is very close to $b$. We give a $p$-adic analogue of this result under the assumption that $a$ is $p$-adically very close to $b$, that is, that a large power of $p$ divides $a-b$. As an application, we solve completely certain families of Thue-Mahler equations. Our results illustrate, admittedly in a very special situation, the strength of the known estimates for linear forms in logarithms.
We define the notion of {\it Dwork family of logarithmic $F$-crystals}, a typical example of which is the family of Gauss hypergeometricdifferential systems, viewed as parametrized by their exponents of algebraic monodromy. The $p$-adic analytic dependence of the Frobenius operation upon those exponents, is Dwork's "Boyarsky Principle". We discuss, in favorable cases, the $p$-adic analytic continuation of the unit root $F$-subcrystal in the open tube of a singularity, uniformly w.r.t. the exponents. We obtain a conceptual proof of the Koblitz-Diamond formula $p$-adically analog to Gauss' evalu…
We investigate the local descents for special orthogonal groups over p-adic local fields of characteristic zero, and obtain an explicit spectral decomposition of the local descents at the first occurrence index in terms of the local Langlands data via the explicit local Langlands correspondence and explicit calculations of relevant local root numbers. The main result can be regarded as a refinement of the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture.
The formulas for local root numbers of abelian varieties of dimension one are known. In this paper we treat the simplest unknown case in dimension two by considering a curve of genus 2 defined over a $5$-adic field such that the inertia acts on the first $\ell$-adic cohomology group through the largest possible finite quotient, isomorphic to $C_5\rtimes C_8$. We give a few criteria to identify such curves and prove a formula for their local root numbers in terms of invariants associated to a Weierstrass equation.
We prove a statement on p-adic continuity of matrices of coefficients of the logarithm of the Artin-Mazur formal group law associated to the middle cohomology of a hypersurface. As Jan Stienstra discovered in 1986, the entries of these matrices are coefficients of powers of the equation of the hypersurface, and in certain cases they satisfy congruences of Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer type. These congruences imply that eigenvalues of our limiting matrices are eigenvalues of Frobenius of zero p-adic valuation on the middle crystalline cohomology of the fibre at p.
The most frequently asked question in the $p-$adic lattice models of statistical mechanics is that whether a root of a polynomial equation belongs to domains $\mathbb{Z}_p^{*}, \ \mathbb{Z}_p\setminus\mathbb{Z}_p^{*}, \ \mathbb{Z}_p, \ \mathbb{Q}_p\setminus\mathbb{Z}_p^{*}, \ \mathbb{Q}_p\setminus\left(\mathbb{Z}_p\setminus\mathbb{Z}_p^{*}\right), \ \mathbb{Q}_p\setminus\mathbb{Z}_p, \ \mathbb{Q}_p $ or not. However, this question was open even for lower degree polynomial equations. In this paper, we give local descriptions of roots of cubic equations over the $p-$adic fields for $p>3$.
Let $f$ be a newform of even weight $2κ$ for $D^\times$, where $D$ is a possibly split indefinite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $K$ be a quadratic imaginary field splitting $D$ and $p$ an odd prime split in $K$. We extend our theory of $p$-adic measures attached to the power series expansions of $f$ around the Galois orbit of the CM point corresponding to an embedding $K\hookrightarrow D$ to forms with any nebentypus and to $p$ dividing the level of $f$. For the latter we restrict our considerations to CM points corresponding to test objects endowed with an arithmetic $p$-level str…
We show that deciding whether a sparse univariate polynomial has a p-adic rational root can be done in NP for most inputs. We also prove a polynomial-time upper bound for trinomials with suitably generic p-adic Newton polygon. We thus improve the best previous complexity upper bound of EXPTIME. We also prove an unconditional complexity lower bound of NP-hardness with respect to randomized reductions for general univariate polynomials. The best previous lower bound assumed an unproved hypothesis on the distribution of primes in arithmetic progression. We also discuss how our results complement …
We implement an iterative numerical method to solve polynomial equations $f(x)=0$ in the $p$-adic numbers, where $f(x) \in\mathbb{Z}_p[x]$. This method is a simplified $p$-adic analogue of Jarratt's method for finding roots of functions over the real numbers. We establish that our method has a higher order of convergence than J.F.T. Rabago's $p$-adic version of Olver's method from 2016. Moreover, we weaken the initial conditions in Rabago's method, which allows us to start the iteration with a multiple root of the congruence $f(x) \equiv 0 \bmod{p}$.
When the branch character has root number -1, the corresponding anticyclotomic Katz p-adic L-function identically vanishes. In this case, we study the $μ$-invariant of the cyclotomic derivative of Katz p-adic L-function. As an application, this proves the non-vanishing of the anticyclotomic regulator of a self-dual CM modular form with the root number -1. The result also plays a crucial role in the recent work of Hsieh on the Eisenstein ideal approach to a one-sided divisibility of the CM main conjecture.
In this paper we study the properties of an algorithm for generating continued fractions in the field of p-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}_p$. First of all, we obtain an analogue of the Galois' Theorem for classical continued fractions. Then, we investigate the length of the preperiod for periodic expansions of square roots. Finally, we prove that there exist infinitely many square roots of integers in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ that have a periodic expansion with period of length four, solving an open problem left by Browkin.
We describe the structure of the Whittaker or Gelfand-Graev module on a $n$-fold metaplectic cover of a $p$-adic group $G$ at both the Iwahori and spherical level. We express our answer in terms of the representation theory of a quantum group at a root of unity attached to the Langlands dual group of $G$. To do so, we introduce an algebro-combinatorial model for these modules and develop for them a Kazhdan-Lusztig theory involving new generic parameters. These parameters can either be specialized to Gauss sums to recover the $p$-adic theory or to the natural grading parameter in the representa…
We describe in dialogue form a possible way of discovering and investigating 10-adic numbers starting from the naive question about a `largest natural number'. Among the topics we pursue are possibilities of extensions to transfinite 10-adic numbers, 10-adic representations of rational numbers, zero divisors, square roots and 10-adic roots of higher degree of natural numbers, and applications of 10-adic number representation in computer arithmetic. The participants of the dialogue are idealized embodiments of different philosophical attitudes towards mathematics. The article aims at illustrati…
For any fixed field $K\!\in\!\{\mathbb{Q}_2,\mathbb{Q}_3,\mathbb{Q}_5, \ldots\}$, we prove that all polynomials $f\!\in\!\mathbb{Z}[x]$ with exactly $3$ (resp. $2$) monomial terms, degree $d$, and all coefficients having absolute value at most $H$, can be solved over $K$ within deterministic time $\log^{7+o(1)}(dH)$ (resp. $\log^{2+o(1)}(dH)$) in the classical Turing model: Our underlying algorithm correctly counts the number of roots of $f$ in $K$, and for each such root generates an approximation in $\mathbb{Q}$ with logarithmic height $O(\log^3(dH))$ that converges at a rate of $O\!\left((1…
Starting from a classical generating series for Bessel functions due to Schlomilch, we use Dwork's relative dual theory to broadly generalize unit-root results of Dwork on Kloosterman sums and Sperber on hyperkloosterman sums. In particular, we express the (unique) p-adic unit root of an arbitrary exponential sum on the torus in terms of special values of the p-adic analytic continuation of a ratio of A-hypergeometric functions. In contrast with the earlier works, we use noncohomological methods and obtain results that are valid for arbitrary exponential sums without any hypothesis of nondegen…
By a "generalized Calabi-Yau hypersurface" we mean a hypersurface in ${\mathbb P}^n$ of degree $d$ dividing $n+1$. The zeta function of a generic such hypersurface has a reciprocal root distinguished by minimal $p$-divisibility. We study the $p$-adic variation of that distinguished root in a family and show that it equals the product of an appropriate power of $p$ times a product of special values of a certain $p$-adic analytic function ${\mathcal F}$. That function ${\mathcal F}$ is the $p$-adic analytic continuation of the ratio $F(Λ)/F(Λ^p)$, where $F(Λ)$ is a solution of the $A$-hypergeome…
We present algorithms revealing new families of polynomials allowing sub-exponential detection of p-adic rational roots, relative to the sparse encoding. For instance, we show that the case of honest n-variate (n+1)-nomials is doable in NP and, for p exceeding the Newton polytope volume and not dividing any coefficient, in constant time. Furthermore, using the theory of linear forms in p-adic logarithms, we prove that the case of trinomials in one variable can be done in NP. The best previous complexity bounds for these problems were EXPTIME or worse. Finally, we prove that detecting p-adic ra…
We derive three identities of symmetry in two variables and eight in three variables related to generalized twisted Bernoulli polynomials and generalized twisted power sums, both of which are twisted by unramified roots of unity. The case of ramified roots of unity was treated previously. The derivations of identities are based on the $p$-adic integral expression, with respect to a measure introduced by Koblitz, of the generating function for the generalized twisted Bernoulli polynomials and the quotient of $p$-adic integrals that can be expressed as the exponential generating function for the…
We consider the adic realization of the Morse transformation on the additive group of integer dyadic numbers. We discuss the arithmetic properties of that action. Then we extend that action to the action of the group of rational dyadic numbers on the solenoid.
For a global function field K of positive characteristic p, we show that Artin conjecture for L-functions of geometric p-adic Galois representations of K is true in a non-trivial p-adic disk but is false in the full p-adic plane. In particular, we prove the non-rationality of the geometric unit root L-functions.
We derive eight identities of symmetry in three variables related to generalized twisted Bernoulli polynomials and generalized twisted power sums, both of which are twisted by ramified roots of unity. All of these are new, since there have been results only about identities of symmetry in two variables. The derivations of identities are based on the $p$-adic integral expression of the generating function for the generalized twisted Bernoulli polynomials and the quotient of $p$-adic integrals that can be expressed as the exponential generating function for the generalized twisted power sums.
The Shub-Smale Tau Conjecture is a hitherto unproven statement (on integer roots of polynomials) whose truth implies both a variant of $P\neq NP$ (for the BSS model over C) and the hardness of the permanent. We give alternative conjectures, some potentially easier to prove, whose truth still implies the hardness of the permanent. Along the way, we discuss new upper bounds on the number of $p$-adic valuations of roots of certain sparse polynomial systems, culminating in a connection between quantitative p-adic geometry and complexity theory.
We derive eight identities of symmetry in three variables related to generalized twisted Euler polynomials and alternating generalized twisted power sums, both of which are twisted by ramified roots of unity. All of these are new, since there have been results only about identities of symmetry in two variables. The derivations of identities are based on the $p$-adic integral expression of the generating function for the generalized twisted Euler polynomials and the quotient of $p$-adic integrals that can be expressed as the exponential generating function for the alternating generalized twiste…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We construct explicit uniformizers for the totally ramified extension $\mathbb{Q}_p(ζ_{p^2},\sqrt[p]{p})$ of the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}_p$, where $ζ_{p^2}$ is a primitive $p^2$-th root of unity.
The Ichino-Ikeda conjecture, and its generalization to unitary groups by N. Harris, has given explicit formulas for central critical values of a large class of Rankin-Selberg tensor products. Although the conjecture is not proved in full generality, there has been considerable progress, especially for $L$-values of the form $L(1/2,BC(π) \times BC(π'))$, where $π$ and $π'$ are cohomological automorphic representations of unitary groups $U(V)$ and $U(V')$, respectively. Here $V$ and $V'$ are hermitian spaces over a CM field, $V$ of dimension $n$, $V'$ of codimension $1$ in $V$, and $BC$ denotes …
In this paper the properties of Rédei rational functions are used to derive rational approximations for square roots and both Newton and Padé approximations are given as particular cases. As a consequence, such approximations can be derived directly by power matrices. Moreover, Rédei rational functions are introduced as convergents of particular periodic continued fractions and are applied for approximating square roots in the field of p-adic numbers and to study periodic representations. Using the results over the real numbers, we show how to construct periodic continued fractions and approxi…
We introduce an adic (Bratteli-Vershik) dynamical system based on a diagram whose path counts from the root are the Delannoy numbers. We identify the ergodic invariant measures, prove total ergodicity for each of them, and initiate the study of the dimension group and other dynamical properties.
Fix an odd prime $p$. In this article, we provide a $\mathrm{mod}\ p$ harmonic number identity, which appears naturally in the canonical expansion of a root $ζ_{p^n}$ of the $p^n$-th cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_{p^n}(T)$ in the $p$-adic Mal'cev-Neumann field $\mathbb{L}_p$. We establish a $\frac{2}{(p-1)p^{n-2}}$-truncated expansion of $ζ_{p^n}$ via a variant of the transfinite Newton algorithm, which gives the first $\aleph_0^2$ terms of the canonical expansion of $ζ_{p^n}$. The harmonic number identity simplifies the expression of this expansion.
Solving polynomials is a fundamental computational problem in mathematics. In the real setting, we can use Descartes' rule of signs to efficiently isolate the real roots of a square-free real polynomial. In this paper, we translate this method into the $p$-adic worlds. We show how the $p$-adic analog of Descartes' rule of signs, Strassman's theorem, leads to an algorithm to isolate the roots of a square-free $p$-adic polynomial. Moreover, we show that this algorithm runs in $\mathcal{O}(d^2\log^3d)$-time for a random $p$-adic polynomial of degree $d$. To perform this analysis, we introduce the…
We deduce a formula enumerating the isomorphism classes of extensions of a $\kp$-adic field $K$ with given ramification $e$ and inertia $f$. The formula follows from a simple group-theoretic lemma, plus the Krasner formula and an elementary class field theory computation. It shows that the number of classes only depends on the ramification and inertia of the extensions $K/\Q_p$, and $K(ζ_{p^m})/K$ obtained adding the $p^m$-th roots of 1, for all $p^m$ dividing $e$.
In this paper, we mainly give a general explicit form of Cassels' $p$-adic embedding theorem for number fields. We also give its refined form in the case of cyclotomic fields. As a byproduct, given an irreducible polynomial $f$ over $Z$, we give a general unconditional upper bound for the smallest prime number $p$ such that $f$ has a simple root modulo $p$.
Let $C$ be a smooth curve over a finite field in characteristic $p$ and let $M$ be an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal over $C$. After replacing $C$ with a dense open subset $M$ obtains a slope filtration, whose steps interpolate the Frobenius eigenvalues of $M$ with bounded slope. This is a purely $p$-adic phenomenon; there is no counterpart in the theory of lisse $\ell$-adic sheaves. The graded pieces of this slope filtration correspond to lisse $p$-adic sheaves, which we call geometric. Geometric lisse $p$-adic sheaves are mysterious. While they fit together to build an overconvergent $F$-isoc…
Let $K$ be a $p$-adic field and $E$ an elliptic curve over $K$ with potential good reduction. For some large Galois extensions $L$ of $K$ containing all $p$-power roots of unity, we show the vanishing of certain Galois cohomology groups of $L$ with values in the $p$-adic representation associated with $E$. This generalizes some results of Coates, Sujatha and Wintenberger.
For a prime $p$ and an integer $x$, the $p$-adic valuation of $x$ is denoted by $ν_{p}(x)$. For a polynomial $Q$ with integer coefficients, the sequence of valuations $ν_{p}(Q(n))$ is shown to be either periodic or unbounded. The first case corresponds to the situation where $Q$ has no roots in the ring of $p$-adic integers. In the periodic situation, the period length is determined.
We say that a set $S$ is additively decomposed into two sets $A$ and $B$, if $S = \{a+b : a\in A, \ b \in B\}$. Here we study additively decompositions of multiplicative subgroups of finite fields. In particular, we give some improvements and generalisations of results of C. Dartyge and A. Sarkozy on additive decompositions of quadratic residues and primitive roots modulo $p$. We use some new tools such the Karatsuba bound of double character sums and some results from additive combinatorics.
In this paper we compute the values of the p-adic multiple polylogarithms of depth two at roots of unity. Our method is to solve the fundamental differential equation satisfied by the crystalline frobenius morphism using rigid analytic methods. The main result could be thought of as a computation in the p-adic theory of higher cyclotomy. We expect the result to be useful in proving non-vanishing results since it gives quite explicit formulas.
Let $1<g_1<\ldots<g_{φ(p-1)}<p-1$ be the ordered primitive roots modulo~$p$. We study the pseudorandomness of the binary sequence $(s_n)$ defined by $s_n\equiv g_{n+1}+g_{n+2}\bmod 2$, $n=0,1,\ldots$. In particular, we study the balance, linear complexity and $2$-adic complexity of $(s_n)$. We show that for a typical $p$ the sequence $(s_n)$ is quite unbalanced. However, there are still infinitely many $p$ such that $(s_n)$ is very balanced. We also prove similar results for the distribution of longer patterns. Moreover, we give general lower bounds on the linear complexity and $2$-adic comple…
Let F be the function field of a curve over a p-adic field. Let D/F be a central division algebra of prime exponent $\ell$ which is different from p. Assume that F contains a primitive ${\ell}^2$-th root of unity. Then the group $SK_1(D):=SL_1(D)/[D^*, D^*]$ is trivial.
We identify the $p$-adic unit roots of the zeta function of a projective hypersurface over a finite field of characteristic $p$ as the eigenvalues of a product of special values of a certain matrix of $p$-adic series. That matrix is a product $F(Λ^p)^{-1}F(Λ)$, where the entries in the matrix $F(Λ)$ are $A$-hypergeometric series with integral coefficients and $F(Λ)$ is independent of $p$.
