Spencer Bloch and the author formulated a general conjecture (Tamagawa number conjecture) on the relation between values of zeta functions of motives and arithmetic groups associated to motives. We discuss this conjecture, and describe some application of the philosophy of the conjecture to the study of elliptic curves.
In the previous article, we showed the Rasmussen-Tamagawa conjecture for QM-abelian surfaces over imaginary quadratic fields. In this article, we generalize the previous work to QM-abelian surfaces over number fields of higher degree. We also give several explicit examples.
We prove the local equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the motive of an abelian extension of an imaginary quadratic field with the action of the Galois group ring for all split primes p not equal to 2 or 3 at all negative integer values s.
Under mild hypotheses on the residual representation, we prove the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for modular motives with coefficients in universal deformation rings and Hecke algebras using a novel combination of the methods of Euler systems and Taylor-Wiles systems. We also prove the compatibility of this conjecture with specialization.
We prove the Iwasawa-theoretic version of a Conjecture of Mazur--Rubin and Sano in the case of elliptic units. This allows us to derive the $p$-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture at $s = 0$ for abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields in the semi-simple case and, provided that a standard $μ$-vanishing hypothesis is satisfied, also in the general case.
This is essentially the author's thesis submited to The University of Chicago (May 1997). I prove the validity of Tamagawa number conjecture of Bloch-Kato for certain Hecke characters. I study the exponential map and local Tamagawa number for all odd primes (both ordinary and supersingular), using Kato's explicit reciprocity law for one dimensional Lubin-Tate formal group. I also study p-part of Shafarevich-Tate group for motives associated to Hecke characters, using Rubin's Main Conjecture in Iwasawa theory. Interestingly a congruence property between p-adic periods of elliptic curve and weig…
In the arithmetic of function fields, Drinfeld modules play the role that elliptic curves play in the arithmetic of number fields. The aim of this paper is to study a non-existence problem of Drinfeld modules with constrains on torsion points at places with large degree. This is motivated by a conjecture of Christopher Rasmussen and Akio Tamagawa on the non-existence of abelian varieties over number fields with some arithmetic constraints. We prove the non-existence of Drinfeld modules satisfying Rasmussen-Tamagawa type conditions in the case where the inseparable degree of base fields is not …
The equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (hereinafter called the eTNC) predicts close relationships between algebraic and analytic aspects of motives. In this paper, we prove a lot of new cases of the minus component of the eTNC for $\mathbb{G}_m$ and for CM abelian extensions. One of the main results states that the $p$-component of the eTNC is true when there exists at least one $p$-adic prime that is tamely ramified. The fundamental strategy is inspired by the work of Dasgupta and Kakde on the Brumer-Stark conjecture.
K. Kato has recently constructed certain syntomic complexes associated with a uniform $F$-crystal over a smooth project variety $X$ and related their cohomology groups to special values of the $L$-function attached to $F$. In this paper, we generalize his results to a $p$-adic family of $F$-crystals.
In this paper we prove the weak local Tamagawa number conjecture for the remaining non-critical cases for the motives associated to Hecke characters $ψ_θ:\mathbb{A}_K\to K^*$ of the author's previous paper, where $K$ is an imaginary quadratic field with $cl(K)=1$, under certain restrictions which originate mainly from the Iwasawa theory of imaginary quadratic fields.
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois CM-extension of number fields with Galois group $G$. In an earlier paper, the author has defined a module $SKu(L/K)$ over the center of the group ring $\mathbb Z[G]$ which coincides with the Sinnott-Kurihara ideal if $G$ is abelian and, in particular, contains many Stickelberger elements. It was shown that a certain conjecture on the integrality of $SKu(L/K)$ implies the minus part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture at an odd prime $p$ for an infinite class of (non-abelian) Galois CM-extensions of number fields which are at most tamely ramified above $p$…
We prove a uniform version of a finiteness conjecture due to Rasmussen and Tamagawa in the case of CM abelian varieties. This extends recent results concerning CM elliptic curves to CM abelian varieties of arbitrary dimension.
Let L/K be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group G. Let p be a rational prime and let r be a non-positive integer. By examining the structure of the p-adic group ring Z_p[G], we prove many new cases of the p-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (ETNC) for the pair (h^0(Spec(L)(r),Z[G])). The same methods can also be applied to other conjectures concerning the vanishing of certain elements in relative algebraic K-groups. We then prove a conjecture of Burns concerning the annihilation of class groups as Galois modules for a wide class of interesting extension…
We give a survey on the relationship between non-commutative Iwasawa theory and the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture following the work of (in alphabetical order) Burns/Flach, Coates/Sujatha, Fukaya/Kato, Huber/Kings and others.
For smooth linear group schemes over $\bbZ$ we give a cohomological interpretation of the local Tamagawa measures as cohomological periods. This is in the spirit of the Tamagawa measures for motives defined by Bloch and Kato. We show that in the case of tori the cohomological and the motivic Tamagawa measures coincide, which reproves the Bloch-Kato conjecture for motives associated to tori.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $K$, $c_v$ the Tamagawa number of $E$ at $v$, and let $c_E=\prod_{v}c_v$. Lorenzini proved that $v_{13}(c_E)$ is postive for all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with a point of order $13$. Krumm conjectured, based on extensive computation, that the $13$-adic valuation of $c_E$ is even for all such elliptic curves. In this note we prove this conjecture and furhtermore prove that there is an unique such curve satisfying $v_{13}(c_E)=2$.
We prove that any integer power of $2$ can be realized as the Tamagawa number of a torus attached to a CM algebra considered by Guo Sheu Yu and Liang Yang Yu. Such a result is obtained by Liang Yang Yu under assuming "a generalized Landau conjecture". The main contribution of this paper is to remove the above assumption.
We describe an explicit `higher rank' Iwasawa theory for zeta elements associated to the multiplicative group over abelian extensions of general number fields. We then show that this theory leads to a concrete new strategy for proving special cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. As a first application of this approach, we use it to prove new cases of the conjecture for Tate motives over natural families of abelian CM extensions of totally real fields for which the relevant $p$-adic $L$-functions possess trivial zeroes.
We fix data $(K/F, E)$ consisting of a Galois extension $K/F$ of characteristic $p$ global fields with arbitrary abelian Galois group $G$ and a Drinfeld module $E$ defined over a certain Dedekind subring of $F$. For this data, we define a $G$-equivariant $L$-function $Θ_{K/F}^E$ and prove an equivariant Tamagawa number formula for certain Euler-completed versions of its special value $Θ_{K/F}^E(0)$. This generalizes Taelman's class number formula for the value $ζ_F^E(0)$ of the Goss zeta function $ζ_F^E$ associated to the pair $(F, E)$. Taelman's result is obtained from our result by setting $…
We give a conjectural description of the vanishing order and leading Taylor coefficient of the Zeta function of a proper, regular arithmetic scheme $\mathcal{X}$ at any integer $n$ in terms of Weil-étale cohomology complexes. This extends work of Lichtenbaum \cite{Lichtenbaum05} and Geisser \cite{Geisser04b} for $\mathcal{X}$ of characteristic $p$, of Lichtenbaum \cite{li04} for $\mathcal{X}=\mathrm{Spec}(\mathcal{O}_F)$ and $n=0$ where $F$ is a number field, and of the second author for arbitrary $\mathcal{X}$ and $n=0$ \cite{Morin14}. We show that our conjecture is compatible with the Tamaga…
We propose a formulation of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for modular motives with coefficients in universal deformation rings and Hecke algebras; something which seems to have been heretofore missing because the complexes of Galois cohomology required were not known to be perfect. We show that the fundamental line of this conjecture satisfies the expected compatibility property at geometric points (more precisely at the points satisfying the Weight-Monodromy conjecture) and is compatible with level-lowering and level-raising. Combining these properties with the methods of Euler a…
We study how Tamagawa numbers of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves vary as one varies the base field or the curve, in the case of semistable reduction. We find that there are strong constraints on the behaviour that appears, some of which are unexpected and specific to hyperelliptic curves. Our methods are explicit and allow one to write down formulae for Tamagawa numbers of infinite families of hyperelliptic curves, of the kind used in proofs of the parity conjecture for Jacobians of curves of small genus.
The local Tamagawa number conjecure, first formulated by Fontaine and Perrin-Riou, expresses the compatibility of the (global) Tamagawa number conjecture on motivic $L$-functions with the functional equation. The local conjecture was proven for Tate motives over finite unramified extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ by Bloch and Kato. We use the theory of $(ϕ, Γ_K)$-modules and a reciprocity law due to Cherbonnier and Colmez to provide a new proof in the case of unramified extensions, and to prove the conjecture for the motive $\mathbb{Q}_p(2)$ over certain tamely ramified extensions.
Let $E/K$ be a finite Galois extension of totally real number fields with Galois group $G$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $r>1$ be an odd integer. The $p$-adic Beilinson conjecture relates the values at $s=r$ of $p$-adic Artin $L$-functions attached to the irreducible characters of $G$ to those of corresponding complex Artin $L$-functions. We show that this conjecture, the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture and a conjecture of Schneider imply the `$p$-part' of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the pair $(h^0(\mathrm{Spec}(E))(r), \mathbb Z[G])$. If $r>1$ is even we obtain a sim…
The purpose of this article is to give a proof of the $C_{EP,F}(V)$ conjecture for some semi-stable representations and of the $δ_{\Zp}(V)$ conjecture for some crystalline representations. There are two major ingredients: first, the computation of Tamagawa numbers using a variation on results of Fontaine-Laffaille and of Bloch-Kato, and second some continuity results for Bloch-Kato's exponential which were proved by Perrin-Riou.
Let $f$ be a cuspidal newform and $p \geq 3$ a prime such that the associated $p$-adic Galois representation has large image. We establish a new and refined "Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type" formula for Bloch-Kato Selmer groups of the central critical twist of $f$ via Kolyvagin derivatives of $L$-values instead of complex analytic or $p$-adic variation of $L$-values only under the Iwasawa main conjecture localized at the augmentation ideal. Our formula determines the exact rank and module structure of the Selmer groups and is insensitive to weight, the local behavior of $f$ at $p$, and analytic…
We propose a new formulation of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (ETNC) for non-commutative coefficients. We remove Picard groupoids, determinant functors, virtual objects and relative K-groups. Our Tamagawa numbers lie in an idele group instead of any kind of K-group. Our formulation is proven equivalent to the one of Burns-Flach.
Let $K$ be a global field and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve with a $K$-rational point of prime order $p$. In this paper we are interested in how often the (global) Tamagawa number $c(E/K)$ of $E/K$ is divisible by $p$. This is a natural question to consider in view of the fact that the fraction $c(E/K)/ |E(K)_{\text{tors}}|$ appears in the second part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. We focus on elliptic curves defined over global fields, but we also prove a result for higher dimensional abelian varieties defined over $\mathbb{Q}$.
We conjecture that special elements associated with rank-one motives are obtained $p$-adically from Rubin-Stark elements by means of a precise `higher-rank Soulé twist' construction. We show this conjecture incorporates a variety of known results and existing predictions and also gives rise to a concrete strategy for proving the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for rank-one motives. We then use this approach to obtain new evidence in support of the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture in the setting of CM abelian varieties.
In this paper, we present a unifying approach to the general theory of abelian Stark conjectures. To do so we define natural notions of `zeta element', of `Weil-étale cohomology complexes' and of `integral Selmer groups' for the multiplicative group $\mathbb{G}_m$ over finite abelian extensions of number fields. We then conjecture a precise connection between zeta elements and Weil-étale cohomology complexes, we show this conjecture is equivalent to a special case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture and we give an unconditional proof of the analogous statement for global function fie…
In the first part of this text, we define motivic Artin L-fonctions via a motivic Euler product, and show that they coincide with the analogous functions introduced by Dhillon and Minac. In the second part, we define under some assumptions a motivic Tamagawa number and show that it specializes to the Tamagawa number introduced by Peyre in the context of Manin's conjectures about rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties.
Recently, D. Burns and C. Greither (Invent. Math., 2003) deduced an equivariant version of the main conjecture for abelian number fields. This was the key to their proof of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. A. Huber and G. Kings (Duke Math. J., 2003) also use a variant of the Iwasawa main conjecture to prove the Tamagawa number conjecture for Dirichlet motives. We use the result of the second pair of authors and the Theorem of Ferrero-Washington to reprove the equivariant main conjecture in a slightly more general form. The main idea of the proof is essentially the same as in the pap…
We investigate the behaviour of Tamagawa numbers of semistable principally polarised abelian varieties in extensions of local fields. In view of the Raynaud parametrisation, this translates into a purely algebraic problem concerning the number of $H$-invariant points on a quotient of $C_n$-lattices $Λ/eΛ'$ for varying subgroups $H$ of $C_n$ and integers $e$. In particular, we give a simple formula for the change of Tamagawa numbers in totally ramified extensions (corresponding to varying $e$) and one that computes Tamagawa numbers up to rational squares in general extensions. As an application…
Assuming specific instances of two general conjectures in arithmetic algebraic geometry (bijectivity of $p$-adic regulator maps, injectivity of $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi maps), we prove several cases of the $p$-part of the Tamagawa number conjecture ($p$-TNC) of Bloch-Kato and Fontaine-Perrin-Riou for (homological) motives of modular forms of even weight $\geq4$ in analytic rank $1$. More precisely, we prove our results for a large class of newforms $f$ and prime numbers $p$ that are ordinary for $f$ and such that the weight of $f$ is congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$. Inspired by work of W. Zhang i…
We consider diagonal cubic surfaces defined by an equation of the form ax^3+by^3+cz^3+dt^3 = 0. Numerically, one can find all rational points of height < B for B in the range of up to 100 000, thanks to a program due to D. J. Bernstein. On the other hand, there are precise conjectures concerning the constants in the asymptotics of rational points of bounded height due to Manin, Batyrev and the authors. Changing the coefficients one can obtain cubic surfaces with rank of the Picard group varying between 1 and 4. We check that numerical data are compatible with the above conjectures. In a previo…
We give an introduction to generalisations of conjectures of Brumer and Stark on the annihilator of the class group of a number field. We review the relation to the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture, the main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for totally real fields, and a conjecture of Gross on the behaviour of $p$-adic Artin $L$-functions at zero.
Answering problems of Manin, we use the critical $L$-values of even weight $k\geq 4$ newforms $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N))$ to define zeta-polynomials $Z_f(s)$ which satisfy the functional equation $Z_f(s)=\pm Z_f(1-s)$, and which obey the Riemann Hypothesis: if $Z_f(ρ)=0$, then $\operatorname{Re}(ρ)=1/2$. The zeros of the $Z_f(s)$ on the critical line in $t$-aspect are distributed in a manner which is somewhat analogous to those of classical zeta-functions. These polynomials are assembled using (signed) Stirling numbers and "weighted moments" of critical values $L$-values. In analogy with Ehrhart polyno…
The authors conjecture an asymptotic expression for the sixth power moment of the Riemann zeta function. They establish related results on the asymptotics of the zeta function that support the conjecture.
We study a class of q-analogues of multiple zeta values given by certain formal q-series with rational coefficients. After introducing a notion of weight and depth for these q-analogues of multiple zeta values we present dimension conjectures for the spaces of their weight- and depth-graded parts, which have a similar shape as the conjectures of Zagier and Broadhurst-Kreimer for multiple zeta values.
We construct the p-adic zeta function for a one-dimensional (as a p-adic Lie extension) non-commutative p-extension of a totally real number field such that the finite part of its Galois group is a pgroup with exponent p. We first calculate the Whitehead groups of the Iwasawa algebra and its canonical Ore localisation by using Oliver-Taylor's theory upon integral logarithms. This calculation reduces the existence of the non-commutative p-adic zeta function to certain congruence conditions among abelian p-adic zeta pseudomeasures. Then we finally verify these congruences by using Deligne-Ribet'…
We formulate an Iwasawa main conjecture for a higher rank Euler system for a general motive. We prove "one half" of the main conjecture under mild hypotheses. We also formulate a conjecture on "Darmon-type derivatives" of Euler systems and give an application to the Tamagawa number conjecture. Lastly, we specialize our general framework to the setting of Heegner points and give a natural interpretation of the Heegner point main conjecture in terms of rank two Euler systems.
This is a report of the author's talk at RIMS workshop 2020 Problems and Prospects in Analytic Number Theory held online on Zoom. We discuss a recent formulation of log Manin's conjecture for klt Campana points and an approach to this conjecture using the height zeta function method.
Lichtenbaum conjectured the existence of a Weil-étale cohomology in order to describe the vanishing order and the special value of the Zeta function of an arithmetic scheme $\mathcal{X}$ at $s=0$ in terms of Euler-Poincaré characteristics. Assuming the (conjectured) finite generation of some étale motivic cohomology groups we construct such a cohomology theory for regular schemes proper over $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, we obtain (unconditionally) the right Weil-étale cohomology for geometrically cellular schemes over number rings. We state a conjecture expressing the vanishing …
We prove that the special value conjecture for the Zeta function of a proper, regular arithmetic scheme X that we formulated in our previous article [8] is compatible with the functional equation of the Zeta function provided that the factor C(X,n) we were not able to compute in loc. cit. has the simple explicit form suggested in [9].
We consider the prehomogeneous vector space of pairs of ternary quadratic forms. For the lattice of pairs of integral ternary quadratic forms and its dual lattice, there are six zeta functions associated with the the prehomogeneous vector space. We present a conjecture which states that there are simple relations among the six zeta functions. We prove that the coefficients coincide on fundamental discriminants.
