We fix data $(K/F, E)$ consisting of a Galois extension $K/F$ of characteristic $p$ global fields with arbitrary abelian Galois group $G$ and a Drinfeld module $E$ defined over a certain Dedekind subring of $F$. For this data, we define a $G$-equivariant $L$-function $Θ_{K/F}^E$ and prove an equivariant Tamagawa number formula for certain Euler-completed versions of its special value $Θ_{K/F}^E(0)$. This generalizes Taelman's class number formula for the value $ζ_F^E(0)$ of the Goss zeta function $ζ_F^E$ associated to the pair $(F, E)$. Taelman's result is obtained from our result by setting $K=F$. As a consequence, we prove a perfect Drinfeld module analogue of the classical (number field) refined Brumer--Stark conjecture, relating a certain $G$-Fitting ideal of Taelman's class group $H(E/K)$ to the special value $Θ_{K/F}^E(0)$ in question.
In the arithmetic of function fields, Drinfeld modules play the role that elliptic curves play in the arithmetic of number fields. The aim of this paper is to study a non-existence problem of Drinfeld modules with constrains on torsion points at places with large degree. This is motivated by a conjecture of Christopher Rasmussen and Akio Tamagawa on the non-existence of abelian varieties over number fields with some arithmetic constraints. We prove the non-existence of Drinfeld modules satisfying Rasmussen-Tamagawa type conditions in the case where the inseparable degree of base fields is not …
We prove the local equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the motive of an abelian extension of an imaginary quadratic field with the action of the Galois group ring for all split primes p not equal to 2 or 3 at all negative integer values s.
Under mild hypotheses on the residual representation, we prove the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for modular motives with coefficients in universal deformation rings and Hecke algebras using a novel combination of the methods of Euler systems and Taylor-Wiles systems. We also prove the compatibility of this conjecture with specialization.
We prove the Iwasawa-theoretic version of a Conjecture of Mazur--Rubin and Sano in the case of elliptic units. This allows us to derive the $p$-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture at $s = 0$ for abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields in the semi-simple case and, provided that a standard $μ$-vanishing hypothesis is satisfied, also in the general case.
The equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (hereinafter called the eTNC) predicts close relationships between algebraic and analytic aspects of motives. In this paper, we prove a lot of new cases of the minus component of the eTNC for $\mathbb{G}_m$ and for CM abelian extensions. One of the main results states that the $p$-component of the eTNC is true when there exists at least one $p$-adic prime that is tamely ramified. The fundamental strategy is inspired by the work of Dasgupta and Kakde on the Brumer-Stark conjecture.
We propose a new formulation of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (ETNC) for non-commutative coefficients. We remove Picard groupoids, determinant functors, virtual objects and relative K-groups. Our Tamagawa numbers lie in an idele group instead of any kind of K-group. Our formulation is proven equivalent to the one of Burns-Flach.
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois CM-extension of number fields with Galois group $G$. In an earlier paper, the author has defined a module $SKu(L/K)$ over the center of the group ring $\mathbb Z[G]$ which coincides with the Sinnott-Kurihara ideal if $G$ is abelian and, in particular, contains many Stickelberger elements. It was shown that a certain conjecture on the integrality of $SKu(L/K)$ implies the minus part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture at an odd prime $p$ for an infinite class of (non-abelian) Galois CM-extensions of number fields which are at most tamely ramified above $p$…
Let L/K be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group G. Let p be a rational prime and let r be a non-positive integer. By examining the structure of the p-adic group ring Z_p[G], we prove many new cases of the p-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (ETNC) for the pair (h^0(Spec(L)(r),Z[G])). The same methods can also be applied to other conjectures concerning the vanishing of certain elements in relative algebraic K-groups. We then prove a conjecture of Burns concerning the annihilation of class groups as Galois modules for a wide class of interesting extension…
We give a survey on the relationship between non-commutative Iwasawa theory and the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture following the work of (in alphabetical order) Burns/Flach, Coates/Sujatha, Fukaya/Kato, Huber/Kings and others.
We propose a formulation of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for modular motives with coefficients in universal deformation rings and Hecke algebras; something which seems to have been heretofore missing because the complexes of Galois cohomology required were not known to be perfect. We show that the fundamental line of this conjecture satisfies the expected compatibility property at geometric points (more precisely at the points satisfying the Weight-Monodromy conjecture) and is compatible with level-lowering and level-raising. Combining these properties with the methods of Euler a…
Let $E/K$ be a finite Galois extension of totally real number fields with Galois group $G$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $r>1$ be an odd integer. The $p$-adic Beilinson conjecture relates the values at $s=r$ of $p$-adic Artin $L$-functions attached to the irreducible characters of $G$ to those of corresponding complex Artin $L$-functions. We show that this conjecture, the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture and a conjecture of Schneider imply the `$p$-part' of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the pair $(h^0(\mathrm{Spec}(E))(r), \mathbb Z[G])$. If $r>1$ is even we obtain a sim…
Recently, D. Burns and C. Greither (Invent. Math., 2003) deduced an equivariant version of the main conjecture for abelian number fields. This was the key to their proof of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. A. Huber and G. Kings (Duke Math. J., 2003) also use a variant of the Iwasawa main conjecture to prove the Tamagawa number conjecture for Dirichlet motives. We use the result of the second pair of authors and the Theorem of Ferrero-Washington to reprove the equivariant main conjecture in a slightly more general form. The main idea of the proof is essentially the same as in the pap…
We conjecture that special elements associated with rank-one motives are obtained $p$-adically from Rubin-Stark elements by means of a precise `higher-rank Soulé twist' construction. We show this conjecture incorporates a variety of known results and existing predictions and also gives rise to a concrete strategy for proving the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for rank-one motives. We then use this approach to obtain new evidence in support of the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture in the setting of CM abelian varieties.
There are various reasons why a naive analog of the Maeda conjecture has to fail for Drinfeld cusp forms. Focussing on double cusp forms and using the link found by Teitelbaum between Drinfeld cusp forms and certain harmonic cochains, we observed a while ago that all obvious counterexamples disappear for certain Hecke-invariant subquotients of spaces of Drinfeld cusp forms of fixed weight, which can be defined naturally via representation theory. The present work extends Teitelbaum's isomorphism to an adelic setting and to arbitrary levels, it makes precise the impact of representation theory,…
We consider the Burns-Flach formulation of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (ETNC). In their setup, a Tamagawa number is an element of a relative K-group. We show that this relative group agrees with an ordinary K-group, namely of the category of locally compact topological modules over the order. Its virtual objects are an equivariant Haar measure in a precise sense. We expect that all relative K-groups in the ETNC will have analoguous interpretations. At present, we need to restrict to regular orders, e.g. hereditary.
We study the local epsilon constant conjecture as formulated by Breuning. This conjecture fits into the general framework of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (ETNC) and should be interpreted as a consequence of the expected compatibility of the ETNC with the functional equation of Artin-L-functions. Let K / Q_p be unramified. Under some mild technical assumption we prove Breuning's conjecture for weakly ramified abelian extensions N / K with cyclic ramification group. As a consequence of Breuning's local-global principle we obtain the validity of the global epsilon constant conjectur…
Let X be Drinfeld's upper half space of dimension d over a finite extension K of Q_p. We construct for every homogeneous vector bundle F on the projective space P^d a GL_{d+1}(K)-equivariant filtration by closed K-Frechet spaces on F(X). This gives rise by duality to a filtration by locally analytic GL_{d+1}(K)-representations on the strong dual. The graded pieces of this filtration are locally analytic induced representations from locally algebraic ones with respect to maximal parabolic subgroups. This paper generalizes the cases of the canonical bundle due to Schneider and Teitelbaum and tha…
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field k and let F be a finite Galois extension of k. Let p be a prime number. Then under certain not-too-stringent conditions on A and F we compute explicitly the algebraic part of the p-component of the equivariant Tamagawa number of the pair ( h^1(A/F)(1), Z[Gal(F/k)] ). By comparing the result of this computation with the theorem of Gross and Zagier we are able to give the first verification of the p-component of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for an abelian variety in the technically most demanding case in which the relevant Mor…
We give an introduction to generalisations of conjectures of Brumer and Stark on the annihilator of the class group of a number field. We review the relation to the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture, the main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for totally real fields, and a conjecture of Gross on the behaviour of $p$-adic Artin $L$-functions at zero.
Let $\mathcal{X} \subset \mathbb{P}_k^d$ be Drinfeld's halfspace over a finite field $k$ and let $\mathcal{E}$ be a homogeneous vector bundle on $\mathbb{P}_k^d$. The paper deals with two different descriptions of the space of global sections $H^0(\mathcal{X},\mathcal{E})$ as $GL_{d+1}(k)$-representation. This is an infinite dimensional modular representation. Here we follow the ideas of \cite{O2,OS} treating the $p$-adic case. As a replacement for the universal enveloping algebra we consider both the crystalline universal enveloping algebra and the ring of differential operators on the flag v…
In a previous paper we constructed a new class of Iwasawa modules as $\ell$--adic realizations of what we called abstract $\ell$--adic $1$--motives in the number field setting. We proved in loc. cit. that the new Iwasawa modules satisfy an equivariant main conjecture. In this paper we link the new modules to the $\ell$--adified Tate canonical class, defined by Tate in 1960 and give an explicit construction of (the minus part of) $\ell$--adic Tate sequences for any Galois CM extension $K/k$ of an arbitrary totally real number field $k$. These explicit constructions are significant and useful in…
We prove an Equivariant Main Conjecture in Iwasawa Theory along any rank one, sign-normalized Drinfeld modular, split at infinity Iwasawa tower of a general function field of characteristic p, for the Iwasawa modules recently considered by Greither and Popescu, in their proof of the classical Equivariant Main Conjecture along the (arithmetic) cyclotomic Iwasawa tower.
In a previous paper we showed, under some assumptions, that the relative K-group in the Burns-Flach formulation of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (ETNC) is canonically isomorphic to a K-group of locally compact equivariant modules. This viewpoint, as well as the usual one, come with generator-relator presentations (due to Bass-Swan and Nenashev) and in this paper we provide an explicit map.
We describe an explicit `higher rank' Iwasawa theory for zeta elements associated to the multiplicative group over abelian extensions of general number fields. We then show that this theory leads to a concrete new strategy for proving special cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. As a first application of this approach, we use it to prove new cases of the conjecture for Tate motives over natural families of abelian CM extensions of totally real fields for which the relevant $p$-adic $L$-functions possess trivial zeroes.
Given an abelian, CM extension K of any totally real number field k, we consider two conjectures `of Stark type'. The `Integrality Conjecture' concerns the image of a p-adic map `\mathfrak{s}_{K/k,S}' determined by the minus-part of the S-truncated equivariant L-function for K/k at s=1. It is connected to the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture of Burns and Flach. The `Congruence Conjecture' says that \mathfrak{s}_{K/k,S} gives an explicit reciprocity law for the element predicted by the corresponding Rubin-Stark Conjecture for K^+/k. We study the general properties of these conjectures and…
Let A be an abelian variety over a number field k and F a finite cyclic extension of k of p-power degree for an odd prime p. Under certain technical hypotheses, we obtain a reinterpretation of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (eTNC) for A, F/k and p as an explicit family of p-adic congru- ences involving values of derivatives of the Hasse-Weil L-functions of twists of A, normalised by completely explicit twisted regulators. This reinterpretation makes the eTNC amenable to numerical verification and furthermore leads to explicit predictions which refine well-known conjectures of Mazur…
We describe a refinement of the general theory of higher rank Euler, Kolyvagin and Stark systems in the setting of the multiplicative group over arbitrary number fields. We use the refined theory to prove new results concerning the Galois structure of ideal class groups and the validity of both the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture and of the `refined class number formula' that has been conjectured by Mazur and Rubin and by Sano. In contrast to previous work in this direction, these results require no hypotheses on the decomposition behaviour of places that are intended to rule out the ex…
Let $N/K$ be a Galois extension of $p$-adic number fields and let $V$ be a $p$-adic representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$. The equivariant local $ε$-constant conjecture $C_{EP}^{na}(N/K, V)$ is related to the compatibility of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture with the functional equation of Artin $L$-functions and it can be formulated as the vanishing of a certain element $R_{N/K}$ in $K_0(\mathbb Z_p[G],\mathbb Q_p^c[G])$. One of the main technical difficulties in the computation of $R_{N/K}$ arises from the so-called cohomological term $C_{N/K}$, which requires th…
In this paper, for a CM abelian extension $K/k$ of number fields, we propose a conjecture which describes completely the Fitting ideal of the minus part of the Pontryagin dual of the $T$-ray class group of $K$ for a set $T$ of primes as a ${\rm Gal}(K/k)$-module. Here, we emphasize that we consider the full class group, and do not throw away the ramifying primes (namely, the object we study is not the quotient of the class group by the subgroup generated by the classes of ramifying primes). We prove that our conjecture is a consequence of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture, and also pr…
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and $r>1$ be an integer. Assuming a conjecture of Schneider, we formulate a conjecture that relates special values of equivariant Artin $L$-series at $s=r$ to the compact support cohomology of the étale $p$-adic sheaf $\mathbb Z_p(r)$. We show that our conjecture is essentially equivalent to the $p$-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the pair $(h^0(\mathrm{Spec}(L))(r), \mathbb Z[G])$. We derive from this explicit constraints on the Galois module structure of Banaszak's $p…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $k$, let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $F/k$ be a cyclic extension of $p$-power degree. Under not-too-stringent hypotheses we give an interpretation of the $p$-component of the relevant case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture in terms of integral congruence relations involving the evaluation on appropriate points of $A$ of the ${\rm Gal}(F/k)$-valued height pairing of Mazur and Tate. We then discuss the numerical computation of this pairing, and in particular obtain the first numerical verifications of this conjecture in…
We prove the semisimplicity conjecture for A-motives over finitely generated fields K. This conjecture states that the rational Tate modules V_p(M) of a semisimple A-motive M are semisimple as representations of the absolute Galois group of K. This theorem is in analogy with known results for abelian varieties and Drinfeld modules, and has been sketched previously by Akio Tamagawa. We deduce two consequences of the theorem for the algebraic monodromy groups G_p(M) associated to an A-motive M by Tannakian duality. The first requires no semisimplicity condition on M and states that G_p(M) may be…
In this paper we show that certain Shimura varieties, uniformized by the product of complex unit balls, can be p-adically uniformized by the product (of equivariant coverings) of Drinfeld upper half-spaces. We also extend a p-adic uniformization to automorphic vector bundles. It is a continuation of our previous work [V], and contains all cases (up to a central modification) of a uniformization by known p-adic symmetric spaces. The idea of the proof is to show that an arithmetic quotient of the product of Drinfeld upper half-spaces cannot be anything else than a certain unitary Shimura variety…
For a prime number p and a number field k, we first study certain etale cohomology groups with coefficients associated to a p-adic Artin representation of its Galois group, where we twist the coefficients using a modified Tate twist with a p-adic index. We show that those groups are cofinitely generated and explicitly compute an additive Euler characteristic. When k is totally real and the representation is even, we relate the order of vanishing of the p-adic L-function at a point of its domain and the corank of such a cohomology group with a suitable p-adic twist. If the groups are finite, th…
We construct the p-adic zeta function for a one-dimensional (as a p-adic Lie extension) non-commutative p-extension of a totally real number field such that the finite part of its Galois group is a pgroup with exponent p. We first calculate the Whitehead groups of the Iwasawa algebra and its canonical Ore localisation by using Oliver-Taylor's theory upon integral logarithms. This calculation reduces the existence of the non-commutative p-adic zeta function to certain congruence conditions among abelian p-adic zeta pseudomeasures. Then we finally verify these congruences by using Deligne-Ribet'…
In our previous work, by using Kolyvagin derivatives of elliptic units, we constructed ideals C_i of the Iwasawa algebra, and proved that the ideals C_i become "upper bounds" of the higher Fitting ideals of the one and two variable p-adic unramified Iwasawa module X over an abelian extension field K_0 of an imaginary quadratic field K. In this article, by using "non-arithmetic" specialization arguments, we prove that the ideals C_i also become "lower bounds" of the higher Fitting ideals of X. In particular, we show that the ideals C_i determine the pseudo-isomorphism class of X. Note that in t…
