Let $R$ be an excellent local domain of positive characteristic with residue field $k$ and let $R^+$ be its absolute integral closure. If $\text{Tor}^R_1(R^+,k)$ vanishes, then $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay, normal, F-rational and F-pure. If $R$ has at most an isolated singularity or has dimension at most two, then $R$ is regular.
We show that a ring $R$ is regular if $Tor_{i}^{R}(R^{+},k) = 0$ for some $i\geq 1$ assuming further that $R$ is a $\mathbb{N}$-graded ring of dimension $2$ finitely generated over an equi-characteristic zero field $k$. This answers a question of Bhatt, Iyengar, and Ma. We use almost mathematics over $R^{+}$ to deduce properties of the noetherian ring $R$ and rational surface singularities. Moreover we show that $R^{+}$ in equi-characteristic zero is $m$-adically ideal(wise) separated, a condition which appears in the proof of local criterion for flatness. In dimension $2$ it is Ohm-Rush and i…
We consider vanishing of Ext and Tor, especially over Artinian rings. In particular, we prove the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for all commutative local rings in which the cube of the maximal ideal is zero.
In this paper we exploit properties of Dao's eta-pairing as well as techniques of Huneke, Jorgensen, and Wiegand to study the vanishing of Tor_i(M,N) of finitely generated modules M, N over complete intersections. We prove vanishing of Tor_i(M, N) for all positive integers i under depth conditions on M, N, and their tensor product. Our arguments improve a result of Dao and establish a new connection between the vanishing of Tor and the depth of tensor products.
In this paper we are concerned with the vanishing of $\textnormal{Tor}$ over complete intersection rings. Building on results of C. Huneke, D. Jorgensen and R. Wiegand, and, more recently, H. Dao, we obtain new results showing that good depth properties on the $R$-modules $M$, $N$ and $M\otimes_RN$ force the vanishing of $\textnormal{Tor}^{R}_{i}(M,N)$ for all $i\geq 1$.
The aim of this paper is to extend the main result of C. Huneke and G. Lyubeznik in [Adv. Math. 210 (2007), 498--504] to the class of rings that are images of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Namely, let $R$ be a local Noetherian domain of positive characteristic that is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that all local cohomology of $R$ (below the dimension) maps to zero in a finite extension of the ring. As a direct consequence we obtain that the absolute integral closure of $R$ is a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. Since every excellent local ring is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local …
Let $(S,\mathfrak{m},k)$ and $(T,\mathfrak{n},k)$ be local rings, and let $R$ denote their fiber product over their common residue field $k$. Inspired by work of Naseh and Sather-Wagstaff, we explore consequences of vanishing of ${\rm Tor}^R_m(M,N)$ for various values of $m$, where $M$ and $N$ are finitely generated $R$-modules.
Given finitely generated modules $M$ and $N$ over a local ring $R$, the tensor product $M\otimes_RN$ typically has nonzero torsion. Indeed, the assumption that the tensor product is torsion-free influences the structure and vanishing of the modules $\Tor^R_i(M,N)$ for all $i\geq 1$. In turn, the vanishing of $\Tor^R_i(M,N)$ imposes restrictions on the depth properties of the modules $M$ and $N$. These connections made their first appearance in Auslander's 1961 paper "Modules over unramified regular local rings". We will survey the literature on these topics, with emphasis on progress during th…
The long-standing Auslander and Reiten Conjecture states that a finitely generated module over a finite-dimensional algebra is projective if certain Ext-groups vanish. Several authors, including Avramov, Buchweitz, Iyengar, Jorgensen, Nasseh, Sather-Wagstaff, and Şega, have studied a possible counterpart of the conjecture, or question, for commutative rings in terms of vanishing of Tor. This has led to the notion of Tor-persistent rings. Our main result shows that the class of Tor-persistent local rings is closed under a number of standard procedures in ring theory.
Consider a non-trivial fiber product $R=S\times_kT$ of local rings $S$, $T$ with common residue field $k$. Given two finitely generate $R$-modules $M$ and $N$, we show that if $\operatorname{Tor}^R_i(M,N)=0=\operatorname{Tor}^R_{i+1}(M,N)$ for some $i\geq 5$, then $\operatorname{pd}_R(M)\leq 1$ or $\operatorname{pd}_R(N)\leq 1$. From this, we deduce several consequence, for instance, that $R$ satisfies the Auslander-Reiten Conjecture.
We develop the basic properties of an essentially new closure operation on submodules, the \emph{liftable integral closure} of a submodule, including its relationships with the two prevailing notions of integral closure of submodules. We show that for a quite general class of local rings, every finite length module may be represented as a quotient of the form $T/L$, where $T$ is torsionless and integrally dependent on $L$.
We define a duality operation connecting closure operations, interior operations, and test ideals, and describe how the duality acts on common constructions such as trace, torsion, tight and integral closures, and divisible submodules. This generalizes the relationship between tight closure and tight interior given in [Epstein-Schwede 2014] and allows us to extend commonly used results on tight closure test ideals to operations such as those above.
For finitely generated modules $M$ and $N$ over a Gorenstein local ring $R$, one has $depth M + depth N= depth(M\otimes N) +depth R$, i.e., the depth formula holds, if $M$ and $N$ are Tor-independent and Tate homology $\hat{Tor}_{i}^{R}(M,N)$ vanishes for all $i\in\mathbb{Z}$. We establish the same conclusion under weaker hypotheses: if $M$ and $N$ are $\mathcal{G}$-relative Tor-independent, then the vanishing of $\hat{Tor}_{i}^{R}(M,N)$ for all $i\le 0$ is enough for the depth formula to hold. We also analyze the depth of tensor products of modules and obtain a necessary condition for the dep…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring which contains a regular sequence $ \underline{x} = x_1,\ldots,x_d \in \mathfrak{m} \smallsetminus \mathfrak{m}^2 $ such that $ \mathfrak{m}^3 \subseteq (\underline{x}) $. Let $ M $ be a finite $ R $-module with maximal complexity or curvature, e.g., $ M $ can be a nonzero direct summand of some syzygy module of the residue field $ R/\mathfrak{m} $. It is shown that the following are equivalent: (1) $R$ is Gorenstein, (2) $\mathrm{Ext}_R^{\gg 0}(M,R)=0$, and (3) $\mathrm{Tor}_{\gg 0}^R(M,ω) = 0$, where $ω$ denotes a canonical module…
Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be an analytically unramified local ring of positive prime characteristic $p.$ For an ideal $I$, let $I^*$ denote its tight closure. We introduce the tight Hilbert function $H^*_I(n)=\ell(R/(I^n)^*)$ and the corresponding tight Hilbert polynomial $P_I^*(n)$ where $I$ is an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal. It is proved that $F$-rationality can be detected by the vanishing of the first coefficient of $P_I^*(n).$ We find the tight Hilbert polynomial of certain parameter ideals in hypersurface rings and Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes.
We say an excellent local domain $(S,n)$ satisfies the vanishing conditions for maps of Tor, if for every $A\to R\to S$ with $A$ regular and $A\to R$ module-finite torsion-free extension, and every $A$-module $M$, the map $Tor^A_i(M, R)\to Tor_i^A(M, S)$ vanishes for every $i\geq 1$. Hochster-Huneke's conjecture (theorem in equal characteristic) thus states that regular rings satisfy such vanishing conditions. The main theorem of this paper shows that, in equal characteristic, rings that satisfy the vanishing conditions for maps of Tor are exactly derived splinters in the sense of Bhatt. In pa…
We prove that each positive power of the maximal ideal of a commutative Noetherian local ring is Tor-rigid, and strongly-rigid. This gives new characterizations of regularity and, in particular, shows that such ideals satisfy the torsion condition of a long-standing conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand.
Let X* be a subset of an affine space A^s, over a finite field K, which is parameterized by the edges of a clutter. Let X and Y be the images of X* under the maps x --> [x] and x --> [(x,1)] respectively, where [x] and [(x,1)] are points in the projective spaces P^{s-1} and P^s respectively. For certain clutters and for connected graphs, we were able to relate the algebraic invariants and properties of the vanishing ideals I(X) and I(Y). In a number of interesting cases, we compute its degree and regularity. For Hamiltonian bipartite graphs, we show the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture. We …
We prove a version of weakly functorial big Cohen-Macaulay algebras that suffices to establish Hochster-Huneke's vanishing conjecture for maps of Tor in mixed characteristic. As a corollary, we prove an analog of Boutot's theorem that direct summands of regular rings are pseudo-rational in mixed characteristic. Our proof uses perfectoid spaces and is inspired by the recent breakthroughs on the direct summand conjecture by André and Bhatt.
We prove that, modulo any power of a prime $p$, the absolute integral closure of an excellent noetherian domain is Cohen-Macaulay. A graded analog is also established, yielding variants of Kodaira vanishing "up to finite covers" in mixed characteristic. Our main tools are (log) prismatic cohomology (which yields a Frobenius action in mixed characteristic) and the $p$-adic Riemann-Hilbert functor for constructible étale $\mathbf{F}_p$-sheaves on varieties over a $p$-adic field (which almost controls perfectified prismatic cohomology).
Auslander's depth formula for pairs of Tor-independent modules over a regular local ring, depth(M \otimes N) = depth(M) + depth(N) - depth(R), has been generalized in several directions over a span of four decades. In this paper we establish a depth formula that holds for every pair of Tate Tor-independent modules over a Gorenstein local ring. It subsumes previous eneralizations of Auslander's formula and yields exact bounds for vanishing of cohomology over certain Gorenstein rings.
We study two properties of modules over a local hypersurface $R$: decency and rigidity. We show that the vanishing of Hochster's function $θ^R(M,N)$, known to imply decent intersection, also implies rigidity. We investigate the vanishing of $θ^R(M,N)$ to obtain new results about decency and rigidity over hypersurfaces. We employ a mixture of techniques from Commutative Algebra and Intersection Theory of algebraic cycles.
For finitely generated modules M and N over a complete intersection R, the vanishing of Tor_i^R(M,N) for all i> 0 gives a tight relationship among depth properties of M, N and their tensor product. Here we concentrate on the converse and show, under mild conditions, that the tensor product of M and N being torsion-free (or satisfying higher Serre conditions) forces vanishing of Tor. Special attention is paid to the case of tensor powers of a single module.
In two recent papers, the author has developed a theory of graded annihilators of left modules over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$, and has shown that this theory is relevant to the theory of test elements in tight closure theory. One result of that work was that, if $R$ is local and the $R$-module structure on the injective envelope $E$ of the simple $R$-module can be extended to a structure as a torsion-free left module over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring, then $R$ is $F$-pure and has a tight closure test element. One…
A graph-theoretic method, simpler than existing ones, is used to characterize the minimal set of monomial generators for the integral closure of any algebra of polynomials generated by quadratic monomials. The toric ideal of relations between these generators is generated by a set of binomials, defined graphically. The spectra of the original algebra and of its integral closure turn out to be canonically homeomorphic.
Over a one-dimensional Gorenstein local domain $R$, let $E$ be the endomorphism ring of the maximal of $R$, viewed as a subring of the integral closure $\overline R$. If there exist finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ and $N$, neither of them free, whose tensor product is torsion-free, we show that $E$ must be local with the same residue field as $R$.
Let K be a finite field and let X be a subset of a projective space, over the field K, which is parameterized by monomials arising from the edges of a clutter. We show some estimates for the degree-complexity, with respect to the revlex order, of the vanishing ideal I(X) of X. If the clutter is uniform, we classify the complete intersection property of I(X) using linear algebra. We show an upper bound for the minimum distance of certain parameterized linear codes along with certain estimates for the algebraic invariants of I(X).
