This paper discusses new analytic algorithms and software for the enumeration of all integer flows inside a network. Concrete applications abound in graph theory \cite{Jaeger}, representation theory \cite{kirillov}, and statistics \cite{persi}. Our methods clearly surpass traditional exhaustive enumeration and other algorithms and can even yield formulas when the input data contains some parameters. These methods are based on the study of rational functions with poles on arrangements of hyperplanes.
The Baldoni--Vergne volume and Ehrhart polynomial formulas for flow polytopes are significant in at least two ways. On one hand, these formulas are in terms of Kostant partition functions, connecting flow polytopes to this classical vector partition function fundamental in representation theory. On the other hand the Ehrhart polynomials can be read off from the volume functions of flow polytopes. The latter is remarkable since the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial of an integer polytope is its volume! Baldoni and Vergne proved these formulas via residues. To reveal the geometry of these f…
On counting permutations by pairs of congruence classes of major index
Given positive integers $r$ and $s$, we use inclusion-exclusion, weighted-counting of tilings, and dynamical programming, in order to enumerate, semi-efficiently, the classes of permutations mentioned in the title. In the process we revisit beautiful previous work of Enrique Navarrete, Robert Tauraso, David Robbins (to whose memory this article is dedicated), and John Riordan. We also present two new proofs of John Riordan's recurrence (from 1965) for the sequence enumerating permutations without rising and falling successions (the $r = 1$, $s = 1$ case of the title in the sense of absolute va…
Borel's triangle is an array of integers closely related to the classical Catalan numbers. In this paper we study combinatorial statistics counted by Borel's triangle. We present various combinatorial interpretations of Borel's triangle in terms of lattice paths, binary trees, and pattern avoiding permutations and matchings, and derive a functional equation that is useful in analyzing the involved structures.
For positive integers $n$ and $k$, the dendrimer $T_{n, k}$ is defined as the rooted tree of radius $n$ whose all vertices at distance less than $n$ from the root have degree $k$. The dendrimers are higly branched organic macromolecules having repeated iterations of branched units that surroundes the central core. Dendrimers are used in a variety of fields including chemistry, nanotechnology, biology. In this paper, for any positive integer $\ell$, we count the number of paths of length $\ell$ of $T_{n, k}$. As a consequence of our main results, we obtain the average distance of $T_{n, k}$ whi…
The sequence A120986 in the Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences counts ternary trees according to the number of nodes and the number of middle edges. Using a certain substition, the underlying cubic equation can be factored. This leads to an extension of the concept of $(3/2)$-ary trees, introduced by Knuth in his christmas lecture from 2014.
In this paper, we address the problem of counting integer points in a rational polytope described by $P(y) = \{ x \in \mathbb{R}^m \colon Ax = y, x \geq 0\}$, where $A$ is an $n \times m$ integer matrix and $y$ is an $n$-dimensional integer vector. We study the Z-transformation approach initiated by Brion-Vergne, Beck, and Lasserre-Zeron from the numerical analysis point of view, and obtain a new algorithm on this problem: If $A$ is nonnegative, then the number of integer points in $P(y)$ can be computed in $O(\mathrm{poly} (n,m, \|y\|_\infty) (\|y\|_\infty + 1)^n)$ time and $O(\mathrm{poly} (…
A partition $α$ is said to contain another partition (or pattern) $μ$ if the Ferrers board for $μ$ is attainable from $α$ under removal of rows and columns. We say $α$ avoids $μ$ if it does not contain $μ$. In this paper we count the number of partitions of $n$ avoiding a fixed pattern $μ$, in terms of generating functions and their asymptotic growth rates. We find that the generating function for this count is rational whenever $μ$ is (rook equivalent to) a partition in which any two part sizes differ by at least two. In doing so, we find a surprising connection to metacyclic $p$-groups. We f…
A wide variety of problems in combinatorics and discrete optimization depend on counting the set $S$ of integer points in a polytope, or in some more general object constructed via discrete geometry and first-order logic. We take a tour through numerous problems of this type. In particular, we consider families of such sets $S_t$ depending on one or more integer parameters $t$, and analyze the behavior of the function $f(t)=|S_t|$. In the examples that we investigate, this function exhibits surprising polynomial-like behavior. We end with two broad theorems detailing settings where this polyno…
Integer partitions are one of the most fundamental objects of combinatorics (and number theory), and so is enumerating objects avoiding patterns. In the present paper we describe two approaches for the systematic counting of classes of partitions avoiding an arbitrary set of "patterns".
We show that if $A$ is a finite set of non-negative integers then the number of zeros of the function \[ f_A(θ) = \sum_{a \in A} \cos(aθ), \] in $[0,2π]$, is at least $(\log \log \log |A|)^{1/2-\varepsilon}$. This gives the first unconditional lower bound on a problem of Littlewood, solves a conjecture of Borwein, Erdélyi, Ferguson and Lockhart and improves upon work of Borwein and Erdélyi. We also prove a result that applies to more general cosine polynomials with "few" distinct rational coefficients. One of the main ingredients in the proof is perhaps of independent interest: we show that if…
The pair correlation is a localized statistic for sequences in the unit interval. Pseudo-random behavior with respect to this statistic is called Poissonian behavior. The metric theory of pair correlations of sequences of the form $(a_n α)_{n \geq 1}$ has been pioneered by Rudnick, Sarnak and Zaharescu. Here $α$ is a real parameter, and $(a_n)_{n \geq 1}$ is an integer sequence, often of arithmetic origin. Recently, a general framework was developed which gives criteria for Poissonian pair correlation of such sequences for almost every real number $α$, in terms of the additive energy of the in…
