For positive integers $n$ and $k$, the dendrimer $T_{n, k}$ is defined as the rooted tree of radius $n$ whose all vertices at distance less than $n$ from the root have degree $k$. The dendrimers are higly branched organic macromolecules having repeated iterations of branched units that surroundes the central core. Dendrimers are used in a variety of fields including chemistry, nanotechnology, biology. In this paper, for any positive integer $\ell$, we count the number of paths of length $\ell$ of $T_{n, k}$. As a consequence of our main results, we obtain the average distance of $T_{n, k}$ which we can establish an alternate proof for the Wiener index of $T_{n, k}$. Further, we generalize the concept of medium domination, introduced by Vargör and Dündar in 2011, of $T_{n, k}$.
We deduce Narayana's formula for the number of lattice paths that fit in a Young diagram as a direct consequence of the Gessel-Viennot theorem on non-intersecting lattice paths.
We show connection between Dyck paths with peaks of bounded height and random walks. The correspondence between a certain class of random walks and such Dyck paths allows us to develop a probabilistic perspective on Chebyshev polynomials.
We construct a combinatorial function F which computes the number of oriented Hamiltonian paths of any given type, in a transitive tournament. We also study many properties of F that arise, and reach some observations.
A Schröder path is a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(2n,0)$ with steps $(1,1)$, $(1,-1)$ and $(2,0)$ that never goes below the $x-$axis. A small Schröder path is a Schröder path with no $(2,0)$ steps on the $x-$axis. In this paper, a 3-variable generating function $R_L(x,y,z)$ is given for Schröder paths and small Schröder paths respectively. As corollaries, we obtain the generating functions for several kinds of generalized Schröder paths counted according to the order in a unified way.
In this paper we study the number of humps (peaks) in Dyck, Motzkin and Schröder paths. Recently A. Regev noticed that the number of peaks in all Dyck paths of order $n$ is one half of the number of super Dyck paths of order $n$. He also computed the number of humps in Motzkin paths and found a similar relation, and asked for bijective proofs. We give a bijection and prove these results. Using this bijection we also give a new proof that the number of Dyck paths of order $n$ with $k$ peaks is the Narayana number. By double counting super Schröder paths, we also get an identity involving produc…
We revisit $R$-polynomials with introducing the new idea ``shifted $R$-polynomials" (or Bruhat weight) for all Bruhat intervals in finite Coxeter groups. Then, we apply these polynomials to weighted counting of Bruhat paths. Further, we prove a new criterion of irregularity of lower intervals as analogy of Carrell-Peterson's and Dyer's results. Also, we present the upper bound of shifted $R$-polynomials for Bruhat intervals of fixed length by Jacobsthal numbers.
A 3-dimensional Catalan word is a word on three letters so that the subword on any two letters is a Dyck path. For a given Dyck path $D$, a recently defined statistic counts the number of Catalan words with the property that any subword on two letters is exactly $D$. In this paper, we enumerate Dyck paths with this statistic equal to certain values, including all primes. The formulas obtained are in terms of Motzkin numbers and Motzkin ballot numbers.
Dyck paths are one of the most important objects in enumerative combinatorics, and there are many papers devoted to counting selected families of Dyck paths. Here we present two approaches for the automatic counting of many such families, using both a "dumb" approach (driven by numeric dynamic programming) that often works in practice, and a "clever" approach, needed for larger problems, driven by "symbolic" dynamic programming. Both approaches are fully automated and implemented in Maple.
Motzkin paths are simple yet important combinatorial objects. In this paper, we consider families of Motzkin paths with restrictions on peak heights, valley heights, upward-run lengths, downward-run lengths, and flat-run lengths. This paper presents two fully automated methods for enumerating the paths of such families. The first method uses numeric dynamic programming. While this method often times works, it can be slow and may not work for larger problems. The second method uses symbolic dynamic programming to solve such problems. These methods are implemented in the maple packages accompany…
Recently, Mansour and Shattuck related the total number of humps in all of the $(k, a)$-paths of order $n$ to the number of super $(k, a)$-paths, which generalized previous results concerning the cases when $k = 1$ and $a = 1$ or $a = \infty$. They also derived a relation on the total number of peaks in all of the $(k, a)$-paths of order $n$ and the number of super $(k, a)$-paths, and asked for bijective proofs. In this paper, we will give bijective proofs of these two relations.
The Catalan number has a lot of interpretations and one of them is the number of Dyck paths. A Dyck path is a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(n,n)$ which is below the diagonal line $y=x$. One way to generalize the definition of Dyck path is to change the end point of Dyck path, i.e. we define (generalized) Dyck path to be a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,n) \in \mathbb{N}^2$ which is below the diagonal line $y=\frac{n}{m}x$, and denote by $C(m,n)$ the number of Dyck paths from $(0,0)$ to $(m,n)$. In this paper, we give a formula to calculate $C(m,n)$ for arbitrary $m$ and $n$.
Koroljuk gave a summation formula for counting the number of lattice paths from $(0,0)$ to $(m,n)$ with $(1,0), (0,1)$-steps in the plane that stay strictly above the line $y=k(x-d)$, where $k$ and $d$ are positive integers. In this paper we obtain an explicit formula for the number of lattice paths from $(a,b)$ to $(m,n)$ above the diagonal $y=kx-r$, where $r$ is a rational number. Our result slightly generalizes Koroljuk's formula, while the former can be essentially derived from the latter. However, our proof uses a recurrence with respect to the starting points, and hereby presents a new a…
We establish three identities involving Dyck paths and alternating Motzkin paths, whose proofs are based on variants of the same bijection. We interpret these identities in terms of closed random walks on the halfline. We explain how these identities arise from combinatorial interpretations of certain properties of the $β$-Hermite and $β$-Laguerre ensembles of random matrix theory. We conclude by presenting two other identities obtained in the same way, for which finding combinatorial proofs is an open problem.
We solve two problems regarding the enumeration of lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-1)$ with respect to the major index, defined as the sum of the positions of the valleys, and to the number of certain crossings. The first problem considers crossings of a single path with a fixed horizontal line. The second one counts pairs of paths with respect to the number of times they cross each other. Our proofs introduce lattice path bijections with convenient visual descriptions, and the answers are given by remarkably simple formulas involving $q$-binomial coefficients.
A circular Pascal array is a periodization of the familiar Pascal's triangle. Using simple operators defined on periodic sequences, we find a direct relationship between the ranges of the circular Pascal arrays and numbers of certain lattice paths within corridors, which are related to Dyck paths. This link provides new, short proofs of some nontrivial formulas found in the lattice-path literature.
We point out that the total number of trails and the total number of paths of given length, between two vertices of a simple undirected graph, are obtained as expectation values of specifically engineered quantum mechanical observables. Such observables are contextual with some background independent theories of gravity and emergent geometry. Thus, we point out yet another situation in which the mathematical formalism of a physical theory has some computational aspects involving intractable problems.
We study the gaps $Δp_n$ between consecutive rank sizes in $r$-differential posets by introducing a projection operator whose matrix entries can be expressed in terms of the number of certain paths in the Hasse diagram. We strengthen Miller's result that $Δp_n \geq 1$, which resolved a longstanding conjecture of Stanley, by showing that $Δp_n \geq 2r$. We also obtain stronger bounds in the case that the poset has many substructures called threads.
We present refined enumeration formulas for lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with two kinds of steps, by keeping track of the number of descents (i.e., turns in a given direction), the major index (i.e., the sum of the positions of the descents), and the number of crossings. One formula considers crossings between a path and a fixed line; the other considers crossings between two paths. Building on the first paper of the series, which used lattice path bijections to give the enumeration with respect to major index and crossings, we obtain a refinement that keeps track of the number of descents.…
A Dyck path is a lattice path in the plane integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ consisting of steps (1,1) and (1,-1), which never passes below the x-axis. A peak at height k on a Dyck path is a point on the path with coordinate y=k that is immediately preceded by a (1,1) step and immediately followed by a (1,-1) step. In this paper we find an explicit expression to the generating function for the number of Dyck paths starting at (0,0) and ending at (2n,0) with exactly r peaks at height k. This allows us to express this function via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind and generatin…
Say a digraph is k-free if it has no directed cycles of length at most k, for positive integers k. Thomasse conjectured that the number of induced 3-vertex directed paths in a simple 2-free digraph on n vertices is at most (n-1)n(n+1)/15. We present an unpublished result of Bondy proving that there are at most 2n^3/25 such paths, and prove that for the class of circular interval digraphs, an upper bound of n^3/16 holds. We also study the problem of bounding the number of (non-induced) 4-vertex paths in 3-free digraphs. We show an upper bound of 4n^4/75 using Bondy's result for Thomasse's conje…
We are concerned with counting self-conjugate $(s,s+1,s+2)$-core partitions. A Motzkin path of length $n$ is a path from $(0,0)$ to $(n,0)$ which stays above the $x$-axis and consists of the up $U=(1,1)$, down $D=(1,-1)$, and flat $F=(1,0)$ steps. We say that a Motzkin path of length $n$ is symmetric if its reflection about the line $x=n/2$ is itself. In this paper, we show that the number of self-conjugate $(s,s+1,s+2)$-cores is equal to the number of symmetric Motzkin paths of length $s$, and give a closed formula for this number.
We present some exact expressions for the number of paths of a given length in a perfect $m$-ary tree. We first count the paths in perfect rooted $m$-ary trees and then use the results to determine the number of paths in perfect unrooted $m$-ary trees, extending a known result for binary trees.
We count a large class of lattice paths by using factorizations of free monoids. Besides the classical lattice paths counting problems related to Catalan numbers, we give a new approach to the problem of counting walks on the slit plane (walks avoid a half line) that was first solved by Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer. We also solve a problem about walks in the half plane avoiding a half line by subsequently applying the factorizations of two different Gessel pairs, giving a generalization of a result of Bousquet-Mélou.
It is known that the Hilbert space dimensionality for quasiparticles in an SU(2)_k Chern-Simons-Witten theory is given by the number of directed paths in certain Bratteli diagrams. We present an explicit formula for these numbers for arbitrary k. This is on the basis of a relation with Dyck paths and Chebyshev polynomials.
Many polynomial invariants are defined on graphs for encoding the combinatorial information and researching them algebraically. In this paper, we introduce the cycle polynomial and the path polynomial of directed graphs for counting cycles and paths, respectively. They satisfy recurrence relations with respect to elementary edge or vertex operations. They are related to other polynomials and can also be generalized to the bivariate cycle polynomial, the bivariate path polynomial and the trivariate cycle-path polynomial. And a most general digraph polynomial satisfying such a linear recurrence …
The set of Dyck paths of length $2n$ inherits a lattice structure from a bijection with the set of noncrossing partitions with the usual partial order. In this paper, we study the joint distribution of two statistics for Dyck paths: \emph{area} (the area under the path) and \emph{rank} (the rank in the lattice). While area for Dyck paths has been studied, pairing it with this rank function seems new, and we get an interesting $(q,t)$-refinement of the Catalan numbers. We present two decompositions of the corresponding generating function: one refines an identity of Carlitz and Riordan; the oth…
The purpose of this article is to provide a solution to the $m$-fold Laplace equation in the half space $R_+^d$ under certain Dirichlet conditions. The solutions we present are a series of $m$ boundary layer potentials. We give explicit formulas for these layer potentials as linear combinations of powers of the Laplacian applied to the Dirichlet data, with coefficients determined by certain path counting problems.
A weighted coloured-edge graph is a graph for which each edge is assigned both a positive weight and a discrete colour, and can be used to model transportation and computer networks in which there are multiple transportation modes. In such a graph paths are compared by their total weight in each colour, resulting in a Pareto set of minimal paths from one vertex to another. This paper will give a tight upper bound on the cardinality of a minimal set of paths for any weighted coloured-edge graph. Additionally, a bound is presented on the expected number of minimal paths in weighted bicoloured-ed…
Parallel Diffusion is a variant of Chip-Firing introduced in 2018 by Duffy et al. In Parallel Diffusion, chips move from places of high concentration to places of low concentration through a discrete-time process. At each time step, every vertex sends a chip to each of its poorer neighbours, allowing for some vertices to perhaps fall into debt (represented by negative stack sizes). In their recent paper, Long and Narayanan proved a conjecture from the original paper by Duffy et al. that every Parallel Diffusion process eventually, after some pre-period, exhibits periodic behaviour. With this r…
For a planar graph $H$, let $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal P}(n,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex planar graph. In this paper, we prove that $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal P}(n,P_7)\sim{4\over 27}n^4$, $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_6)\sim(n/3)^3$, $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_8)\sim(n/4)^4$ and $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal P}(n,K_4\{1\})\sim(n/6)^6$, where $K_4\{1\}$ is the $1$-subdivision of $K_4$. In addition, we obtain significantly improved upper bounds on $\operatorname{\mathbf{N}}_{\mathcal P}(n,P_{2m+1})$ and…
We provide an elementary proof of a formula for the number of northeast lattice paths that lie in a certain region of the plane. Equivalently, this formula counts the lattice points inside the Pitman--Stanley polytope of an n-tuple.
We give a simple combinatorial proof of a formula that extends a result by Grigorchuk (rediscovered by Cohen) relating cogrowth and spectral radius of random walks. Our main result is an explicit equation determining the number of `bumps' on paths in a graph: in a $d$-regular (not necessarily transitive) non-oriented graph let the series $G(t)$ count all paths between two fixed points weighted by their length $t^{length}$, and $F(u,t)$ count the same paths, weighted as $u^{number of bumps}t^{length}$. Then one has $$F(1-u,t)/(1-u^2t^2) = G(t/(1+u(d-u)t^2))/(1+u(d-u)t^2).$$ We then derive the c…
Borel's triangle is an array of integers closely related to the classical Catalan numbers. In this paper we study combinatorial statistics counted by Borel's triangle. We present various combinatorial interpretations of Borel's triangle in terms of lattice paths, binary trees, and pattern avoiding permutations and matchings, and derive a functional equation that is useful in analyzing the involved structures.
This note presents a formula for the enumerative invariants of arbitrary genus in toric surfaces. The formula computes the number of curves of a given genus through a collection of generic points in the surface. The answer is given in terms of certain lattice paths in the relevant Newton polygon. If the toric surface is the projective plane or the product of two projective lines then the invariants under consideration coincide with the Gromov-Witten invariants. The formula gives a new count even in these cases, where other computational technique is available.
We compute the number of equivalence classes of nonperiodic covering cycles of given length in a non oriented connected graph. A covering cycle is a closed path that traverses each edge of the graph at least once. A special case is the number of Euler cycles in the non oriented graph. An identity relating the numbers of covering cycles of any length in a graph to a product of determinants is obtained.
Using lattice path counting arguments, we reproduce a well known formula for the number of standard Young tableaux. We also produce an interesting new formula for tableaux of height $\leq 3$ using the Fourier methods of Ault and Kicey.

A Condorcet domain is a collection of linear orders which satisfy an acyclic majority relation. In this paper we describe domains as collections of directed Hamilton paths. We prove that while Black's single-peaked domains are defined by their extremal paths, Arrow's single-peaked domains are not. We also introduce domain contractions and domain extensions as well as self-paired domains, and describe some properties of these. We give a formula for the number of isomorphism classes of Arrow's single-peaked domains in terms of the number of self-paired domains, and give upper and lower bounds on…
Counting the number of permutations of a given total displacement is equivalent to counting weighted Motzkin paths of a given area (Guay-Paquet and Petersen, 2014). The former combinatorial problem is still open. In this work, we show that this connection allows to construct efficient algorithms for counting and for sampling such permutations. These algorithms provide a tool to better understand the original combinatorial problem. A by-product of our approach is a different way of counting based on certain building sequences for Motzkin paths, which may be of independent interest.

We find a bijection between bi-banded paths and peak-counting paths, applying to two classes of lattice paths including Dyck paths. Thus we find a new interpretation of Narayana numbers as coefficients of weight polynomials enumerating bi-banded Dyck paths, which class of paths has arisen naturally in previous literature in a solution of the stationary state of the `TASEP' stochastic process.
We count the number of lattice paths lying under a cyclically shifting piecewise linear boundary of varying slope. Our main result extends well known enumerative formulae concerning lattice paths, and its derivation involves a classical reflection argument. A refinement allows for the counting of paths with a specified number of corners. We also apply the result to examine paths dominated by periodic boundaries.
We consider directed weighted graphs and define various families of path counting functions. Our main results are explicit formulas for the main term of the asymptotic growth rate of these counting functions, under some irrationality assumptions on the lengths of all closed orbits on the graph. In addition we assign transition probabilities to such graphs and compute statistics of the corresponding random walks. Some examples and applications are reviewed.
In this paper we present a way to count the number of trains that we can construct with a given set of domino pieces. As an application we obtain a new method to compute the total number of eulerian paths in an undirected graph as well as their starting and ending vertices.
Let $P\subset\mathbb{R}^{2}$ be a set of $n$ points. In this paper we show two new algorithms, one to compute the number of triangulations of $P$, and one to compute the number of pseudo-triangulations of $P$. We show that our algorithms run in time $O^{*}(t(P))$ and $O^{*}(pt(P))$ respectively, where $t(P)$ and $pt(P)$ are the largest number of triangulation paths (T-paths) and pseudo-triangulations paths (PT-paths), respectively, that the algorithms encounter during their execution. Moreover, we show that $t(P) = O^{*}(9^{n})$, which is the first non-trivial bound on $t(P)$ to be known. Whil…
Every binary De~Bruijn sequence of order n satisfies a recursion 0=x_n+x_0+g(x_{n-1}, ..., x_1). Given a function f on (n-1) bits, let N(f; r) be the number of functions generating a De Bruijn sequence of order n which are obtained by changing r locations in the truth table of f. We prove a formula for the generating function \sum_r N(\ell; r) y^r when \ell is a linear function. The proof uses a weighted Matrix Tree Theorem and a description of the in-trees (or rooted trees) in the n-bit De Bruijn graph as perturbations of the Hamiltonian paths in the same graph.
A bijection $Φ$ is presented between plane bipolar orientations with prescribed numbers of vertices and faces, and non-intersecting triples of upright lattice paths with prescribed extremities. This yields a combinatorial proof of the following formula due to R. Baxter for the number $Θ_{ij}$ of plane bipolar orientations with $i$ non-polar vertices and $j$ inner faces: $Θ_{ij}=2\frac{(i+j)!(i+j+1)!(i+j+2)!}{i!(i+1)!(i+2)!j!(j+1)!(j+2)!}$. In addition, it is shown that $Φ$ specializes into the bijection of Bernardi and Bonichon between Schnyder woods and non-crossing pairs of Dyck words.
The line graph LG of a directed graph G has a vertex for every edge of G and an edge for every path of length 2 in G. In 1967, Knuth used the Matrix-Tree Theorem to prove a formula for the number of spanning trees of LG, and he asked for a bijective proof. In this paper, we give a bijective proof of a generating function identity due to Levine which generalizes Knuth's formula. As a result of this proof we find a bijection between binary de Bruijn sequences of degree n and binary sequences of length 2^{n-1}. Finally, we determine the critical groups of all the Kautz graphs and de Bruijn graphs…
We describe a general purpose algorithm for counting simple cycles and simple paths of any length $\ell$ on a (weighted di)graph on $N$ vertices and $M$ edges, achieving a time complexity of $O\left(N+M+\big(\ell^ω+\ellΔ\big) |S_\ell|\right)$. In this expression, $|S_\ell|$ is the number of (weakly) connected induced subgraphs of $G$ on at most $\ell$ vertices, $Δ$ is the maximum degree of any vertex and $ω$ is the exponent of matrix multiplication. We compare the algorithm complexity both theoretically and experimentally with most of the existing algorithms for the same task. These comparison…
The notion of a $τ$-exceptional sequence was introduced by Buan and Marsh in 2018 as a generalisation of an exceptional sequence for finite dimensional algebras. We calculate the number of complete $τ$-exceptional sequences over certain classes of Nakayama algebras. In some cases, we obtain closed formulas which also count other well known combinatorial objects and exceptional sequences of path algebras of Dynkin quivers.
In this paper we studied infinite weighted automata and a general methodology to solve a wide variety of classical lattice path counting problems in an uniform way. This counting problems are related to Dyck paths, Motzkin paths and some generalizations. These methodology uses weighted automata, equations of ordinary generating functions and continued fractions. It is a variation of the one proposed by J. Rutten.
The Goulden-Jackson cluster method is a powerful tool for obtaining generating functions for counting words in a free monoid by occurrences of a set of subwords. We introduce a generalization of the cluster method for monoid networks, which generalize the combinatorial framework of free monoids. As a sample application of the generalized cluster method, we compute bivariate and multivariate generating functions counting Motzkin paths---both with height bounded and unbounded---by statistics corresponding to the number of occurrences of various subwords, yielding both closed-form and continued f…
