We give a simple combinatorial proof of a formula that extends a result by Grigorchuk (rediscovered by Cohen) relating cogrowth and spectral radius of random walks. Our main result is an explicit equation determining the number of `bumps' on paths in a graph: in a $d$-regular (not necessarily transitive) non-oriented graph let the series $G(t)$ count all paths between two fixed points weighted by their length $t^{length}$, and $F(u,t)$ count the same paths, weighted as $u^{number of bumps}t^{length}$. Then one has $$F(1-u,t)/(1-u^2t^2) = G(t/(1+u(d-u)t^2))/(1+u(d-u)t^2).$$ We then derive the circuit series of `free products' and `direct products' of graphs. We also obtain a generalized form of the Ihara-Selberg zeta function.

We deduce Narayana's formula for the number of lattice paths that fit in a Young diagram as a direct consequence of the Gessel-Viennot theorem on non-intersecting lattice paths.
We show connection between Dyck paths with peaks of bounded height and random walks. The correspondence between a certain class of random walks and such Dyck paths allows us to develop a probabilistic perspective on Chebyshev polynomials.
We construct a combinatorial function F which computes the number of oriented Hamiltonian paths of any given type, in a transitive tournament. We also study many properties of F that arise, and reach some observations.
A Schröder path is a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(2n,0)$ with steps $(1,1)$, $(1,-1)$ and $(2,0)$ that never goes below the $x-$axis. A small Schröder path is a Schröder path with no $(2,0)$ steps on the $x-$axis. In this paper, a 3-variable generating function $R_L(x,y,z)$ is given for Schröder paths and small Schröder paths respectively. As corollaries, we obtain the generating functions for several kinds of generalized Schröder paths counted according to the order in a unified way.
We revisit $R$-polynomials with introducing the new idea ``shifted $R$-polynomials" (or Bruhat weight) for all Bruhat intervals in finite Coxeter groups. Then, we apply these polynomials to weighted counting of Bruhat paths. Further, we prove a new criterion of irregularity of lower intervals as analogy of Carrell-Peterson's and Dyer's results. Also, we present the upper bound of shifted $R$-polynomials for Bruhat intervals of fixed length by Jacobsthal numbers.
We present some exact expressions for the number of paths of a given length in a perfect $m$-ary tree. We first count the paths in perfect rooted $m$-ary trees and then use the results to determine the number of paths in perfect unrooted $m$-ary trees, extending a known result for binary trees.
A 3-dimensional Catalan word is a word on three letters so that the subword on any two letters is a Dyck path. For a given Dyck path $D$, a recently defined statistic counts the number of Catalan words with the property that any subword on two letters is exactly $D$. In this paper, we enumerate Dyck paths with this statistic equal to certain values, including all primes. The formulas obtained are in terms of Motzkin numbers and Motzkin ballot numbers.
Dyck paths are one of the most important objects in enumerative combinatorics, and there are many papers devoted to counting selected families of Dyck paths. Here we present two approaches for the automatic counting of many such families, using both a "dumb" approach (driven by numeric dynamic programming) that often works in practice, and a "clever" approach, needed for larger problems, driven by "symbolic" dynamic programming. Both approaches are fully automated and implemented in Maple.
Motzkin paths are simple yet important combinatorial objects. In this paper, we consider families of Motzkin paths with restrictions on peak heights, valley heights, upward-run lengths, downward-run lengths, and flat-run lengths. This paper presents two fully automated methods for enumerating the paths of such families. The first method uses numeric dynamic programming. While this method often times works, it can be slow and may not work for larger problems. The second method uses symbolic dynamic programming to solve such problems. These methods are implemented in the maple packages accompany…
The simple connected graphs may be classified by their cycle composition (number and lengths of cycles). This work derives the counting series of the simple connected graphs that have cycles of unrestricted number and length, but no overlapping cycles. Cycle pairs of these graphs of interest must not have common nodes or edges. The recipe of counting these graphs is based on the counting series of the associated planted graphs, multisets of planted graphs, a recursive synthesis of enriched trees, and a generalized Otter's formula that maps the underlying rooted block graphs to the underlying b…
We solve two problems regarding the enumeration of lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-1)$ with respect to the major index, defined as the sum of the positions of the valleys, and to the number of certain crossings. The first problem considers crossings of a single path with a fixed horizontal line. The second one counts pairs of paths with respect to the number of times they cross each other. Our proofs introduce lattice path bijections with convenient visual descriptions, and the answers are given by remarkably simple formulas involving $q$-binomial coefficients.
Many polynomial invariants are defined on graphs for encoding the combinatorial information and researching them algebraically. In this paper, we introduce the cycle polynomial and the path polynomial of directed graphs for counting cycles and paths, respectively. They satisfy recurrence relations with respect to elementary edge or vertex operations. They are related to other polynomials and can also be generalized to the bivariate cycle polynomial, the bivariate path polynomial and the trivariate cycle-path polynomial. And a most general digraph polynomial satisfying such a linear recurrence …
We study the gaps $Δp_n$ between consecutive rank sizes in $r$-differential posets by introducing a projection operator whose matrix entries can be expressed in terms of the number of certain paths in the Hasse diagram. We strengthen Miller's result that $Δp_n \geq 1$, which resolved a longstanding conjecture of Stanley, by showing that $Δp_n \geq 2r$. We also obtain stronger bounds in the case that the poset has many substructures called threads.
If ${\cal F}$ is a set of subgraphs $F$ of a finite graph $E$ we define a graph-counting polynomial $$ p_{\cal F}(z)=\sum_{F\in{\cal F}}z^{|F|} $$ In the present note we consider oriented graphs and discuss some cases where ${\cal F}$ consists of unbranched subgraphs $E$. We find several situations where something can be said about the location of the zeros of $p_{\cal F}$.
We present refined enumeration formulas for lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with two kinds of steps, by keeping track of the number of descents (i.e., turns in a given direction), the major index (i.e., the sum of the positions of the descents), and the number of crossings. One formula considers crossings between a path and a fixed line; the other considers crossings between two paths. Building on the first paper of the series, which used lattice path bijections to give the enumeration with respect to major index and crossings, we obtain a refinement that keeps track of the number of descents.…
We improve the bounds on the number of interval graphs on $n$ vertices. In particular, denoting by $I_n$ the quantity in question, we show that $\log I_n \sim n\log n$ as $n\to \infty$.
We show that the problem of counting perfect matchings remains #P-complete even if we restrict the input to very dense graphs, proving the conjecture in [5]. Here "dense graphs" refer to bipartite graphs of bipartite independence number $\leq 2$, or general graphs of independence number $\leq 2$. Our proof is by reduction from counting perfect matchings in bipartite graphs, via elementary linear algebra tricks and graph constructions.
We are concerned with counting self-conjugate $(s,s+1,s+2)$-core partitions. A Motzkin path of length $n$ is a path from $(0,0)$ to $(n,0)$ which stays above the $x$-axis and consists of the up $U=(1,1)$, down $D=(1,-1)$, and flat $F=(1,0)$ steps. We say that a Motzkin path of length $n$ is symmetric if its reflection about the line $x=n/2$ is itself. In this paper, we show that the number of self-conjugate $(s,s+1,s+2)$-cores is equal to the number of symmetric Motzkin paths of length $s$, and give a closed formula for this number.
In this short note we determine the maximum number, over all $n$-vertex graphs $G$, of orientations of $G$ containing no strongly connected cycle $C_{2k+1}$. This answers a part of a recent question of Araujo, Botler and Mota.
We show that a simple Markov chain, the Glauber dynamics, can efficiently sample independent sets almost uniformly at random in polynomial time for graphs in a certain class. The class is determined by boundedness of a new graph parameter called bipartite pathwidth. This result, which we prove for the more general hardcore distribution with fugacity $λ$, can be viewed as a strong generalisation of Jerrum and Sinclair's work on approximately counting matchings, that is, independent sets in line graphs. The class of graphs with bounded bipartite pathwidth includes claw-free graphs, which general…
We present exponential and super factorial lower bounds on the number of Hamiltonian cycles passing through any edge of the basis graphs of a graphic, generalized Catalan and uniform matroids. All lower bounds were obtained by a common general strategy based on counting appropriated cycles of length four in the corresponding matroid basis graph.
We state and prove some counting formulas relating to cliques in the distant graphs of projective lines over finite rings. As a preliminary to this, we prove a decomposition theorem for the graphs in terms of the direct-product decomposition of their rings.
The problem of maximising the number of cliques among $n$-vertex graphs from various graph classes has received considerable attention. We investigate this problem for the class of $1$-planar graphs where we determine precisely the maximum total number of cliques as well as the maximum number of cliques of any fixed size. We also precisely characterise the extremal graphs for these problems.
It is a classical fact that the number of vertices of the graphical zonotope $Z_Γ$ is equal to the number of acyclic orientations of a graph $Γ$. We show that the $f$-polynomial of $Z_Γ$ is obtained as the principal specialization of the $q$-analog of the chromatic symmetric function of $Γ$.
We count invertible Schrödinger operators (perturbations by diagonal matrices of the adjacency matrix) over finite fieldsfor trees, cycles and complete graphs. This is achieved for trees through the definition and use of local invariants (algebraic constructions of perhapsindependent interest).Cycles and complete graphs are treated by ad hoc methods.

本文给出了一个简单的多项式时间算法来精确计算任意树宽有界的欧拉图的欧拉圈数。已知对于一般的图,计数k的问题是#P-完全的(Brightwell and Winkler,(Brightwell and Winkler,2005))。到目前为止,没有多项式时间算法计数欧拉旅游的任何一类图是已知的,除了非常特殊的情况下,串并行图(其中有树宽2)。
In the branch of mathematics known as graph theory, graphs are considered as a set of points, called vertices, with connections between these points, called edges. The purpose of this paper is to study mappings between two graphs that have certain desirable properties, called graph homomorphisms, and the probability of such a mapping occurring. By using notions from graph theory and combinatorics, in this paper we prove several new theorems that place bounds on this probability for certain common classes of graphs such as Kn, and show that isolated vertices may safely be ignored.
Here we prove that counting maximum matchings in planar, bipartite graphs is #P-complete. This is somewhat surprising in the light that the number of perfect matchings in planar graphs can be computed in polynomial time. We also prove that counting non-necessarily perfect matchings in planar graphs is already #P-complete if the problem is restricted to bipartite graphs. So far hardness was proved only for general, non-necessarily bipartite graphs.
We determine, for all $k\geq 6$, the typical structure of graphs that do not contain an induced $2k$-cycle. This verifies a conjecture of Balogh and Butterfield. Surprisingly, the typical structure of such graphs is richer than that encountered in related results. The approach we take also yields an approximate result on the typical structure of graphs without an induced $8$-cycle or without an induced $10$-cycle.
We establish a so-called counting lemma that allows embeddings of certain linear uniform hypergraphs into sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs, generalizing a result for graphs [Embedding graphs with bounded degree in sparse pseudorandom graphs, Israel J. Math. 139 (2004), 93-137]. Applications of our result are presented in the companion paper [Counting results for sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs II].
Counting dominating sets in a graph $G$ is closely related to the neighborhood complex of $G$. We exploit this relation to prove that the number of dominating sets $d(G)$ of a graph is determined by the number of complete bipartite subgraphs of its complement. More precisely, we state the following. Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ such that its complement has exactly $a(G)$ subgraphs isomorphic to $K_{2p,2q}$ and exactly $b(G)$ subgraphs isomorphic to $K_{2p+1,2q+1}$. Then $d(G) = 2^n -1 + 2[a(G)-b(G)]$. We also show some new relations between the domination polynomial and the neighborh…
In 1930, Kuratowski showed that $K_{3,3}$ and $K_5$ are the only two minor-minimal non-planar graphs. Robertson and Seymour extended finiteness of the set of forbidden minors for any surface. Širáň and Kochol showed that there are infinitely many $k$-crossing-critical graphs for any $k\ge 2$, even if restricted to simple $3$-connected graphs. Recently, $2$-crossing-critical graphs have been completely characterized by Bokal, Oporowski, Richter, and Salazar. We present a simplified description of large 2-crossing-critical graphs and use this simplification to count Hamiltonian cycles in such gr…
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple graph. A non-empty set $S\subseteq V (G)$ is a weakly connected dominating set in $G$, if the subgraph obtained from $G$ by removing all edges each joining any two vertices in $V (G)\setminus S$ is connected. In this paper, we consider some graphs and study the number of their weakly connected dominating sets.
