Following a recent paper by N. Mandache (Inverse Problems 17 (2001), pp. 1435-1444), we establish a general procedure for determining the instability character of inverse problems. We apply this procedure to many elliptic inverse problems concerning the determination of defects of various types by different kinds of boundary measurements and we show that these problems are exponentially ill-posed.
We discuss the recent paper by A. Darós and L.K. Arruda (On the instability of elliptic traveling wave solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm equation, J. Diff. Equat., 266 (2019), 1946-1968). Our intention is to correct some imperfections left by the authors and present the orbital stability of periodic snoidal waves in the energy space.
The Fredholm index of unbounded operators defined on generalized solutions of nonlocal elliptic problems in plane bounded domains is investigated. It is known that nonlocal terms with smooth coefficients having zero of a certain order at the conjugation points do not affect the index of the unbounded operator. In this paper, we construct examples showing that the index may change under nonlocal perturbations with coefficients not vanishing at the points of conjugation of boundary-value conditions.
We consider the inverse scattering problem on the energy interval in three dimensions. We are focused on stability and instability questions for this problem. In particular, we prove an exponential instability estimate which shows optimality of the logarithmic stability result of [Stefanov, 1990] (up to the value of the exponent).
We study the interaction of (slowly modulated) high frequency waves for multi-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations with gauge invariant power-law nonlinearities and non-local perturbations. The model includes the Davey--Stewartson system in its elliptic-elliptic and hyperbolic-elliptic variant. Our analysis reveals a new localization phenomenon for non-local perturbations in the high frequency regime and allows us to infer strong instability results on the Cauchy problem in negative order Sobolev spaces, where we prove norm inflation with infinite loss of regularity by a constructive ap…
We study an asymptotic behaviour of the principal eigenvalue for an elliptic operator with large advection which is given by a gradient of a potential function. It is shown that the principal eigenvalue decays exponentially under the velocity potential well condition as the parameter tends to infinity.
In this paper, we use variational methods to prove the existence of positive solution for the following class of elliptic equation $$ -ε^{2}Δ{u}+V(z)u=f(u) \,\,\, \mbox{in} \,\,\, \mathbb{R}^{2}, $$ where $ε>0$ is a positive parameter, $V$ is a saddle-like potential and $f$ has an exponential critical growth.
We consider the Gel'fand inverse problem and continue studies of [Mandache,2001]. We show that the Mandache-type instability remains valid even in the case of Dirichlet-to-Neumann map given on the energy intervals. These instability results show, in particular, that the logarithmic stability estimates of [Alessandrini,1988], [Novikov,Santacesaria,2010] and especially of [Novikov,2010] are optimal (up to the value of the exponent).
We study the two dimensional non-linear Schrödinger equation with two types of exponential non-linearities. It is well-known by a work of Ruf - Sani, that such models support solitary wave solutions, which are solutions of some constrained minimization problem. We show that these Ruf - Sani solitons, are spectrally unstable as well as unstable by blow-up.
We construct positive singular solutions for the problem $-Δu=λ\exp (e^u)$ in $B_1\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq 3$), $u=0$ on $\partial B_1$, having a prescribed behaviour around the origin. Our study extends the one in Y. Miyamoto [Y. Miyamoto, A limit equation and bifurcation diagrams of semilinear elliptic equations with general supercritical growth. J. Differential Equations \textbf{264} (2018), 2684--2707] for such nonlinearities. Our approach is then carried out to elliptic equations featuring iterated exponentials.
In this work we prove the existence of infinitely many nonradial solutions that change signal to the problem $-Δu=f(u)$ in $B$ with $u=0$ on $\partial B$, where $B$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $f$ is a continuous and odd function with exponential critical growth.
In this paper, we are concerned with stable solutions to the fractional elliptic equation $$ (-Δ)^s u=e^u\mbox{ in }\mathbb R^{N}, $$ where $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplacian with $0<s<1$. We establish the nonexistence of stable solutions provided that $N<10s$. This result is optimal when $s\uparrow 1$.
In this paper we establish, using variational methods combined with the Moser-Trudinger inequality, existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for a class of critical fractional elliptic equations with exponential growth without a Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz-type condition. The interaction of the nonlinearities with the spectrum of the fractional operator will used to study the existence and multiplicity of solutions. The main technical result proves that a local minimum in $C_{s}^0(\overlineΩ)$ is also a local minimum in $W^{s,p}_0$ for nonlinearities with exponential growth.
We prove the existence of entire solutions with exponential growth for the semilinear elliptic system [\begin{cases} -Δu = -u v^2 & \text{in $\R^N$} -Δv= -u^2 v & \text{in $\R^N$} u,v>0, \end{cases}] for every $N \ge 2$. Our construction is based on an approximation procedure, whose convergence is ensured by suitable Almgren-type monotonicity formulae. The construction of \emph{some} solutions is extended to systems with $k$ components, for every $k > 2$.
In this short note we present an instability result for transonic flows with respect to perturbations of the Mach number at infinity. More specifically we show that a perturbation of a transonic solution in the context of a Cauchy problem for the 2-dimensional steady, isentropic and irrotational Euler equations, which is a solution that solves an elliptic equation in certain parts of its domain and a hyperbolic equation in other parts, can only take place in the analytic category if the elliptic part of the domain is affected.
We establish the existence of positive solutions for a nonlinear elliptic Dirichlet problem in dimension $N$ involving the $N$-Laplacian. The nonlinearity considered depends on the gradient of the unknown function and an exponential term. In such case, variational methods cannot be applied. Our approach is based on approximation scheme, where we consider a new class of normed spaces of finite dimension. As a particular case, we extended the result achieved by De Araujo and Montenegro [2016] for any $N>2$.
We consider the following boundary value problem -Δu= g(x,u) + f(x,u) x\in Ω u=0 x\in \partial Ω where $g(x,-ξ)=-g(x,ξ)$ and $g$ has subcritical exponential growth in $\mathbb{R} ^2$. Using the method developed by Bolle, we prove that this problem has infinitely many solutions under suitable conditions on the growth of $g(u)$ and $f(u)$.
In this paper, we establish the existence and multiplicity of multi-bump nodal solutions for the following class of problems $$ -Δu+(λV(x)+1)u=f(u),~~\mbox{in}~~\mathbb{R}^2, $$ where $λ\in(0,\infty)$, $f$ is a continuous function with exponential critical growth and $V:\mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{R}$ is a continuous function verifying some hypotheses.
In this note we prove the exponential instability of the fractional Calderón problem and thus prove the optimality of the logarithmic stability estimate from \cite{RS17}. In order to infer this result, we follow the strategy introduced by Mandache in \cite{M01} for the standard Calderón problem. Here we exploit a close relation between the fractional Calderón problem and the classical Poisson operator. Moreover, using the construction of a suitable orthonormal basis, we also prove (almost) optimality of the Runge approximation result for the fractional Laplacian, which was derived in \cite{RS1…
In this paper, we deal with the following singular perturbed fractional elliptic problem $ ε^{} (-Δ)^{1/2}{u}+V(z)u=f(u)\,\,\, \mbox{in} \,\,\, \mathbb{R}, $ where $ (-Δ)^{1/2}u$ is the square root of the Laplacian and $f(s)$ has exponential critical growth. Under suitable conditions on $f(s)$, we construct a localized bound state solution concentrating at an isolated component of the positive local minimum points of the potential of $V$ as $ε$ goes to $0.$
In this paper, we prove global gradient estimates for solutions to linear elliptic and parabolic equations. For a sufficiently smooth bounded convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, we show that a solution $ϕ\in W_0^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ to an appropriate elliptic equation $\mathcal{L} ϕ= F$, with $F \in L^{\infty}(Ω;\mathbb{R})$, satisfies $|\nabla ϕ|_{\infty} \leq C |F|_{\infty}$, with a positive constant $C = \exp(C(\mathcal{L})\text{diam}(Ω))$. We also obtain similiar estimates in the parabolic setting. The proof of these exponential bounds relies on global gradient estimates inspired by a series …
In this paper a quasi-linear elliptic equation in the whole Euclidean space is considered. The nonlinearity of the equation is assumed to have exponential growth or have critical growth in view of Trudinger-Moser type inequality. Under some assumptions on the potential and the nonlinearity, it is proved that there is a nontrivial positive weak solution to this equation. Also it is shown that there are two distinct positive weak solutions to a perturbation of the equation. The method of proving these results is combining Trudinger-Moser type inequality, Mountain-pass theorem and Ekeland's varia…
We deal with nonlinear weighted biharmonic problem in the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{4}$. The weight is of logarithm type. The nonlinearity is critical in view of Adam's inequalities in the weighted Sobolev space $W^{2,2}_{0}(B,w)$. We prove the existence of non trivial solutions via the critical point theory. The main difficulty is the loss of compactness due to the critical exponential growth of the nonlinear term $f$. We give a new growth condition and we point out its importance for checking the Palais-Smale compactness condition.
On a bounded smooth domain we study solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation with an exponential nonlinearity and a Hardy potential depending on the distance to the boundary of the domain. We derive global a priori bounds of the Keller-Osserman type. Using a Phragmen-Lindelof alternative for generalized sub and super-harmonic functions we discuss existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of so-called large solutions, i.e., solutions which tend to infinity at the boundary. The approach develops the one used by the same authors for a problem with a power nonlinearity instead of the exponential n…
In this work we study the existence of nontrivial solution for the following class of multivalued elliptic problems $$ -Δu+V(x)u-εh(x)\in \partial_t F(x,u) \quad \text{in} \quad \mathbb{R}^2, \eqno{(P)} $$ where $ε>0$, $V$ is a continuous function verifying some conditions, $h \in (H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{2}))^{*}$ and $\partial_t F(x,u)$ is a generalized gradient of $F(x,t)$ with respect to $t$ and $F(x,t)=\int_{0}^{t}f(x,s)\,ds$. Assuming that $f$ has an exponential critical growth and a discontinuity point, we have applied Variational Methods for locally Lipschitz functional to get two solutions …
In this paper we prove that the Cauchy problem for first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations is ill-posed in Gevrey spaces, under the assumption of an initial ellipticity. The assumption bears on the principal symbol of the first-order operator. Ill-posedness means instability in the sense of Hadamard, specifically an instantaneous defect of Hölder continuity of the flow from $G^σ$ to $L^2$, where $σ\in(0,1)$ depends on the initial spectrum. Building on the analysis carried out by G. Métivier [\textit{Remarks on the well-posedness of the nonlinear Cauchy problem}, Cont…
Let $n\geq 3$, $α$, $β\in\mathbb{R}$, and let $v$ be a solution $Δv+αe^v+βx\cdot\nabla e^v=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, which satisfies the conditions $\lim_{R\to\infty}\frac{1}{\log R}\int_{1}^{R}ρ^{1-n} (\int_{B_ρ}e^v\,dx)dρ\in (0,\infty)$ and $|x|^2e^{v(x)}\le A_1$ in $\R^n$. We prove that $\frac{v(x)}{\log |x|}\to -2$ as $|x|\to\infty$ and $α>2β$. As a consequence under a mild condition on $v$ we prove that the solution is radially symmetric about the origin.

In this paper we consider the initial Neumann boundary value problem for a degenerate Keller--Segel model which features a signal-dependent non-increasing motility function. The main obstacle of analysis comes from the possible degeneracy when the signal concentration becomes unbounded. In the current work, we are interested in boundedness and exponential stability of the classical solution in higher dimensions. With the aid of a Lyapunov functional and a delicate Alikakos--Moser type iteration, we are able to establish a time-independent upper bound of the concentration provided that the moti…
In this paper we investigate the behavior and the existence of positive and non-radially symmetric solutions to nonlinear exponential elliptic model problems defined on a solid torus $\bar{T}$ of $\mathbb{R}^3$, when data are invariant under the group $G=O(2)\times I \subset O(3)$. The model problems of interest are stated below: ${ll} {\bf(P_1)} & \displaystyle Δ\upsilon+γ=f(x)e^\upsilon, \upsilon>0\quad \mathrm{on} \quad T, \quad\upsilon |_{_{\partial T}}=0.$ and ${ll}\bf{(P_2)} & \displaystyle Δ\upsilon+a+fe^\upsilon=0, \upsilon>0\quad \mathrm{on}\quad T, [1.3ex] &\displaystyle \frac{\parti…
In this paper we consider the existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for the following class of fractional elliptic problem \begin{equation}\label{00} \left\{\begin{aligned} (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}}u + u &= Q(x)f(u)\;\;\mbox{in}\;\;\R \setminus (a,b)\\ \mathcal{N}_{1/2}u(x) &= 0\;\;\mbox{in}\;\;(a,b), \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation} where $a,b\in \R$ with $a<b$, $(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ denotes the fractional Laplacian operator and $\mathcal{N}_s$ is the nonlocal operator that describes the Neumann boundary condition, which is given by $$ \mathcal{N}_{1/2}u(x) = \frac{1}π \int_{\R\setminus (a…
In this paper, using blow-up analysis, we prove a quantization result for an elliptic equation with critical exponential growth on compact Riemannian surface without boundary. Similar results for Euclidean space were obtained by Adimurthi-Struwe \cite{Adi-Stru}, Druet \cite{Druet}, Lamm-Robert-Struwe \cite{L-R-S}, Martinazzi \cite{Mart}, Martinazzi-Struwe \cite{Mar-Stru}, and Struwe \cite{Struwe} respectively.
We study exponential decay of eigenfunctions of self-adjoint higher order elliptic operators on $\R^d$. We show that the possible critical decay rates are determined algebraically. In addition we show absence of super-exponentially decaying eigenfunctions and a refined exponential upper bound.
This paper deals with the qualitative analysis of solutions to the following $(p,q)$-fractional equation: \begin{equation*} \begin{array}{rllll} (-Δ)^{s_1}_{p}u+(-Δ)^{s_2}_{q}u+V(x) \big(|u|^{p-2}u+|u|^{q-2}u\big) = K(x)\frac{f(u)}{|x|^\ba} \; \text{ in } \mb R^N, \end{array} \end{equation*} \noi where $1< q< p$, $0<s_2\leq s_1<1$, $ps_1=N$, $\ba\in[0,N)$, and $V,K:\mb R^N\to\mb R$, $f:\mb R\to \mb R$ are continuous functions satisfying some natural hypotheses. We are concerned both with the case when $f$ has a subcritical growth and with the critical framework with respect to the exponential …
Consider a general linear Hamiltonian system $\partial_{t}u=JLu$ in a Hilbert space $X$. We assume that$\ L: X \to X^{*}$ induces a bounded and symmetric bi-linear form $\left\langle L\cdot,\cdot\right\rangle $ on $X$, which has only finitely many negative dimensions $n^{-}(L)$. There is no restriction on the anti-self-dual operator $J: X^{*} \supset D(J) \to X$. We first obtain a structural decomposition of $X$ into the direct sum of several closed subspaces so that $L$ is blockwise diagonalized and $JL$ is of upper triangular form, where the blocks are easier to handle. Based on this structu…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with smooth boundary, we study the following elliptic Dirichlet problem $$ \begin{cases} -Δ\upsilon= e^{\upsilon}-sϕ_1-4παδ_p-h(x)\,\,\,\, \,\textrm{in}\,\,\,\,\,Ω,\\[2mm] \upsilon=0 \quad\quad\quad\quad\quad\quad \qquad\qquad\quad\quad\,\,\,\, \textrm{on}\,\ \,\partialΩ, \end{cases} $$ where $s>0$ is a large parameter, $h\in C^{0,γ}(\overlineΩ)$, $p\inΩ$, $α\in(-1,+\infty)\setminus\mathbb{N}$, $δ_p$ denotes the Dirac measure supported at point $p$ and $ϕ_1$ is a positive first eigenfunction of the problem $-Δϕ=λϕ$ under Dirichlet boundary conditio…
In this paper, we study the following class of fractional Hamiltonian systems: \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{aligned}\displaystyle \left\{ \arraycolsep=1.5pt \begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u + u = \Big(I_{μ_{1}}\ast G(v)\Big)g(v) \ \ \ & \mbox{in} \ \mathbb{R},\\[2mm] (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} v + v = \Big(I_{μ_{2}}\ast F(u)\Big)f(u) \ \ \ & \mbox{in} \ \mathbb{R}, \end{array} \right. \end{aligned} \end{eqnarray*} where $(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ is the square root Laplacian operator, $μ_{1},μ_{2}\in(0,1)$, $I_{μ_{1}},I_{μ_{2}}$ denote the Riesz potential, $\ast$ indicates the convolution operator, $F(s),…
For the time-space fractional degenerate Keller-Segel equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial _{t}^{β}u=-(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}(ρ(v)u),& t>0\\ (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}} v+v=u,& t>0 \end{cases} \end{equation*} $x\inΩ, Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n}, β\in (0,1),α\in (1,2)$, we consider for $n\geq 3$ the problem of finding a time-independent upper bound of the classical solution such that as $θ>0,C>0$ \begin{equation*} \left \| u(\cdot ,t)-\overline{u_{0}} \right \|_{L^{\infty }(Ω)}+\left \| v(\cdot ,t)-\overline{u_{0}} \right \|_{W^{1,\infty }(Ω)}\leq Ce^{(-θ)^{1/β}t}, \end{equation*} where $\overline{u_{0}…
In this paper we compute the Leray Schauder degree for a fourth order elliptic boundary value problem with exponential nonlinearity and Navier boundary condition. This will be made by proving a Poincare'-Hopf type theorem. Moreover by using this result, together with some quantitative results about the formal set of barycenters, we are able to establish a direct and geometrically clear degree counting formula for our problem. We remark that this formula has been proven with complete different methods by Lin Wei and Wang by using blow-up type estimates.
We consider operators $-Δ+ X$ where $X$ is a constant vector field, in a bounded domain and show spectral instability when the domain is expanded by scaling. More generally, we consider semiclassical elliptic boundary value problems which exhibit spectral instability for small values of the semiclassical parameter h, which should be thought of as the reciprocal of the Peclet constant. This instability is due to the presence of the boundary: just as in the case of $-Δ+ X$, some of our operators are normal when considered on R^d. We characterize the semiclassical pseudospectrum of such problems …
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem for an inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrodinger equation with exponential growth nonlinearity and harmonic potential in two space dimensions. We prove global well-posedness, existence of the associated ground state and instability of the standing wave.
We establish some existence results for a class of critical elliptic problems with singular exponential nonlinearities. We do not assume any global sign conditions on the nonlinearity, which makes our results new even in the nonsingular case.
We are concerned with the properties of weak solutions of the stationary Schrödinger equation $-Δu + Vu = f(u)$, $u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\cap L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^N)$, where $V$ is Hölder continuous and $\inf V>0$. Assuming $f$ to be continuous and bounded near $0$ by a power function with exponent larger than $1$ we provide precise decay estimates at infinity for solutions in terms of Green's function of the Schrödinger operator. In some cases this improves known theorems on the decay of solutions. If $f$ is also real analytic on $(0,\infty)$ we obtain that the set of positive solutions is loca…
In the past few decades, much attention has been paid to the bubbling problem for semilinear Neumann elliptic equation with the critical and subcritical polynomial nonlinearity, much less is known if the polynomial nonlinearity is replaced by the exponential nonlinearity. In this paper, we consider the following semilinear Neumann elliptic problem with the Trudinger-Moser exponential growth: \begin{equation*}\begin{cases} -dΔu_d+u_d=u_d(e^{u^2_{d}}-1)\ \ \mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ \frac{\partial u_d}{\partialν}=0\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \mbox{on}\ \partial Ω,\\ \end{cases}\end{equa…
For first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations, we formulate an assumption of a transition from initial hyperbolicity to ellipticity. This assumption bears on the principal symbol of the first-order operator. Under such an assumption, we prove a strong Hadamard instability for the associated Cauchy problem, namely an instantaneous defect of Hölder continuity of the flow from $G^σ$ to $L^2$, with $0 < σ< σ_0$, the limiting Gevrey index $σ_0$ depending on the nature of the transition. We restrict here to scalar transitions, and non-scalar transitions in which the boundary…
We develop a new infinite dimensional gluing method for fractional elliptic equations. As a model problem, we construct solutions of the fractional Allen--Cahn equation vanishing on a rotationally symmetric surface which resembles a catenoid and have sub-linear growth at infinity. Moreover, such solutions are unstable.
It was recently shown by the authors that a semilinear elliptic equation can be represented as an infinite-dimensional dynamical system in terms of boundary data on a shrinking one-parameter family of domains. The resulting system is ill-posed, in the sense that solutions do not typically exist forward or backward in time. In this paper we consider a radial family of domains and prove that the linearized system admits an exponential dichotomy, with the unstable subspace corresponding to the boundary data of weak solutions to the linear PDE. This generalizes the spatial dynamics approach, which…
We consider a sequence of blowup solutions of a two dimensional, second order elliptic equation with exponential nonlinearity and singular data. This equation has a rich background in physics and geometry. In a work of Bartolucci-Chen-Lin-Tarantello it is proved that the profile of the solutions differs from global solutions of a Liouville type equation only by a uniformly bounded term. The present paper improves their result and establishes an expansion of the solutions near the blowup points with a sharp error estimate.
On a smoothly bounded domain $Ω\subset\R{2m}$ we consider a sequence of positive solutions $u_k\stackrel{w}{\rightharpoondown} 0$ in $H^m(Ω)$ to the equation $(-Δ)^m u_k=λ_k u_k e^{mu_k^2}$ subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions, where $0<λ_k\to 0$. Assuming that $$Λ:=\lim_{k\to\infty}\int_Ωu_k(-Δ)^m u_k dx<\infty,$$ we prove that $Λ$ is an integer multiple of $Λ_1:=(2m-1)!\vol(S^{2m})$, the total $Q$-curvature of the standard $2m$-dimensional sphere.
In this paper, we will solve this uniqueness problem of positive solutions to the following equations of exponential growth: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu =λue^{u^2},\quad\quad & x\in B_1\subset \mathbb{R}^2,\\ u>0, & x\in B_1,\ \\ u=0,\quad\quad &x\in \partial B_1, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $ 0<λ<λ_1(B_1)$ and $λ_1(B_1)$ denotes the first eigenvalue of the operator $-Δ$ with the Dirichlet boundary in unit disk. Our method relies on delicate and difficult analysis of radial solutions to the above equation and careful asymptotic expansion of solutions near the boundary. This uniqu…
