Given a finite alphabet X and an ordering on the letters, the map σsends each monomial on X to the word that is the ordered product of the letter powers in the monomial. Motivated by a question on Groebner bases, we characterize ideals I in the free commutative monoid (in terms of a generating set) such that the ideal <σ(I)> generated by σ(I) in the free monoid is finitely generated. Whether there exists an ordering such that <σ(I)> is finitely generated turns out to be NP-complete. The latter problem is closely related to the recognition problem for comparability graphs.
If $J\subset I$ are two monomials ideals, we give a practical upper bound for the Stanley depth of $J/I$, which we call it the \emph{quasi-depth} of $J/I$. Also, we compute the quasi-depth of several classes of square free monomial ideals. We also study the Stanley depth of the monomial ideal associated of the independent sets of a graph.
Independent sets play a key role into the study of graphs and important problems arising in graph theory reduce to them. We define the monomial ideal of independent sets associated to a finite simple graph and describe its homological and algebraic invariants in terms of the combinatorics of the graph. We compute the minimal primary decomposition and characterize the Cohen--Macaulay ideals. Moreover, we provide a formula for computing the Betti numbers, which depends only on the coefficients of the independence polynomial of the graph.
This article is built upon three main ideas. First, for a class of monomial ideals, it is proven that the multiplicity of an ideal equals the number of realizations of its codimension (an intuitive concept that we define later). Next, for an arbitrary graph G, we construct a monomial ideal M_G, and show that the chromatic number of G is equal to the codimension of M_G. Finally, for a class of graphs, we give a formula that computes the chromatic polynomial of G, evaluated at the chromatic number of G, in terms of the codimension and multiplicity of M_G. In particular, the formula applies to al…
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is a measure of algebraic complexity of an ideal. Regularity of monomial ideals can be investigated combinatorially. We use a simple graph decomposition and results from structural graph theory to prove, improve and generalize many of the known bounds on regularity of quadratic square-free monomial ideals.
We prove the multiplicity bounds conjectured by Herzog-Huneke-Srinivasan and Herzog-Srinivasan in the following cases: the strong conjecture for edge ideals of bipartite graphs, and the weaker Taylor bound conjecture for all quadratic monomial ideals. We attach a directed graph to a bipartite graph with perfect matching, and describe operations on the directed graph that would reduce the problem to a Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graph. We determine when equality holds in the conjectured bound for edge ideals of bipartite graphs, and verify that when equality holds, the resolution is pure. We chara…
B. Sturmfels and S. Sullivant associated to any graph a toric ideal, called the cut ideal. We consider monomial cut ideals and we show that their algebraic properties such as the minimal primary decomposition, the property of having a linear resolution or being Cohen--Macaulay may be derived from the combinatorial structure of the graph.
There is a natural infinite graph whose vertices are the monomial ideals in a polynomial ring. The definition involves Gröbner bases or the action of an algebraic torus. We present algorithms for computing the (affine schemes representing) edges in this graph. We study the induced subgraphs on multigraded Hilbert schemes and on square-free monomial ideals. In the latter case, the edges correspond to generalized bistellar flips.
Let (P,<) be a finite poset and let G be its comparability graph. If cl(G) is the clutter of maximal cliques of G, we prove that cl(G) satisfies the max-flow min-cut property and that its edge ideal is normally torsion free. We prove that edge ideals of complete admissible uniform clutters are normally torsion free. The normality of a monomial ideal is expressed in terms of blocking polyhedra and the integer decomposition property. For edge ideals of clutters this property completely determine their normality
We survey research relating algebraic properties of powers of squarefree monomial ideals to combinatorial structures. In particular, we describe how to detect important properties of (hyper)graphs by solving ideal membership problems and computing associated primes. This work leads to algebraic characterizations of perfect graphs independent of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. In addition, we discuss the equivalence between the Conforti-Cornuejols conjecture from linear programming and the question of when symbolic and ordinary powers of squarefree monomial ideals coincide.
Let $(R,\mm)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. We say $M$ has maximal depth if there is an associated prime $\pp$ of $M$ such that $\depth M=\dim R/\pp$. In this paper we study squarefree monomial ideals which have maximal depth. Edge ideals of cycle graphs, transversal polymatroidal ideals and high powers of connected bipartite graph with this property are classified.
There is a natural one-to-one correspondence between squarefree monomial ideals and finite simple hypergraphs via the cover ideal construction. Let H be a finite simple hypergraph, and let J = J(H) be its cover ideal in a polynomial ring R. We give an explicit description of all associated primes of R/J^s, for any power J^s of J, in terms of the coloring properties of hypergraphs arising from H. We also give an algebraic method for determining the chromatic number of H, proving that it is equivalent to a monomial ideal membership problem involving powers of J. Our work yields two new purely al…
We study various binomial and monomial ideals arising in the theory of divisors, orientations, and matroids on graphs. We use ideas from potential theory on graphs and from the theory of Delaunay decompositions for lattices to describe their minimal polyhedral cellular free resolutions. We show that the resolutions of all these ideals are closely related and that their $\mathbb{Z}$-graded Betti tables coincide. As corollaries, we give conceptual proofs of conjectures and questions posed by Postnikov and Shapiro, by Manjunath and Sturmfels, and by Perkinson, Perlman, and Wilmes. Various other r…
In this paper we study simplicial complexes as higher dimensional graphs in order to produce algebraic statements about their facet ideals. We introduce a large class of square-free monomial ideals with Cohen-Macaulay quotients, and a criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of facet ideals of simplicial trees. Along the way, we generalize several concepts from graph theory to simplicial complexes.
This paper is concerned with the question of whether geometric structures such as cell complexes can be used to simultaneously describe the minimal free resolutions of all powers of a monomial ideal. We provide a full answer in the case of square-free monomial ideals of projective dimension one, by introducing a combinatorial construction of a family of (cubical) cell complexes whose 1-skeletons are powers of a graph that supports the resolution of the ideal.
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph with edge ideal $I(G)$. Let $J(G)$ denote the Alexander dual of $I(G)$. We show that a description of all induced cycles of odd length in $G$ is encoded in the associated primes of $J(G)^2$. This result forms the basis for a method to detect odd induced cycles of a graph via ideal operations, e.g., intersections, products and colon operations. Moreover, we get a simple algebraic criterion for determining whether a graph is perfect. We also show how to determine the existence of odd holes in a graph from the value of the arithmetic degree of $J(G)^2$.
We will study monomial ideals $I$ in the exterior algebra as well as in the polynomial ring whose generic initial ideal is constant for all term orders up to permutations of variables. First, in the exterior algebra, we determine all graphs and all flag complexes whose exterior face ideal satisfies the above condition. Second, in the polynomial ring, it will be shown that the generic initial ideal $\gin_σ(I(G))$ of the edge ideal $I(G)$ of a graph $G$ is constant for all term orders $σ$ up to permutations of variables if and only if $G$ is a complete bipartite graph.
We introduce and study vertex cover algebras of weighted simplicial complexes. These algebras are special classes of symbolic Rees algebras. We show that symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals are finitely generated and that such an algebra is normal and Cohen-Macaulay if the monomial ideal is squarefree. For a simple graph, the vertex cover algebra is generated by elements of degree 2, and it is standard graded if and only if the graph is bipartite. We also give a general upper bound for the maximal degree of the generators of vertex cover algebras.
In this paper, we introduce techniques for producing normal square-free monomial ideals from old such ideals. These techniques are then used to investigate the normality of cover ideals under some graph operations. Square-free monomial ideals that come out as linear combinations of two normal ideals are shown to be not necessarily normal; under such a case we investigate the integral closedness of all powers of these ideals.
Each partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, ..., λ_n)$ determines a so-called Ferrers tableau or, equivalently, a Ferrers bipartite graph. Its edge ideal, dubbed Ferrers ideal, is a squarefree monomial ideal that is generated by quadrics. We show that such an ideal has a 2-linear minimal free resolution, i.e. it defines a small subscheme. In fact, we prove that this property characterizes Ferrers graphs among bipartite graphs. Furthermore, using a method of Bayer and Sturmfels, we provide an explicit description of the maps in its minimal free resolution: This is obtained by associating a suitable polyhedra…
Let $I$ be a monomial squarefree ideal of a polynomial ring $S$ over a field $K$ such that the sum of every three different of its minimal prime ideals is the maximal ideal of $S$, or more general a constant ideal. We associate to $I$ a graph on $[s]$, $s=|\Min S/I|$ on which we may {\em read} the depth of $I$. In particular, $\depth_S\ I$ does not depend of char $K$. Also we show that $I$ satisfies the Stanley's Conjecture.
We provide some new conditions under which the graded Betti numbers of a monomial ideal can be computed in terms of the graded Betti numbers of smaller ideals, thus complementing Eliahou and Kervaire's splitting approach. As applications, we show that edge ideals of graphs are splittable, and we provide an iterative method for computing the Betti numbers of the cover ideals of Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs. Finally, we consider the frequency with which one can find particular splittings of monomial ideals and raise questions about ideals whose resolutions are characteristic-dependent.
The Riemann-Roch theorem on a graph G is related to Alexander duality in combinatorial commutive algebra. We study the lattice ideal given by chip firing on G and the initial ideal whose standard monomials are the G-parking functions. When G is a saturated graph, these ideals are generic and the Scarf complex is a minimal free resolution. Otherwise, syzygies are obtained by degeneration. We also develop a self-contained Riemann-Roch theory for artinian monomial ideals.
This article provides a method for constructing invariants and semi-invariants of a binary $N$-ic form over a field $k$ characteristics $0$ or $p > N$. A practical and broadly applicable sufficient condition for ensuring nontriviality of the symmetrization of a graph-monomial is established. This allows construction of infinite families of invariants (especially, skew-invariants) and families of $k$-linearly independent semi-invariants. These constructions are very useful in the quantum physics of Fermions. Additionally, they permit us to establish a new polynomial-type lower bound on the coef…
We study the defining equations of the Rees algebra of square-free monomial ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. We determine that when an ideal $I$ is generated by $n$ square-free monomials of the same degree then $I$ has relation type at most $n-2$ as long as $n \leq 5$. In general, we establish the defining equations of the Rees algebra in this case. Furthermore, we give a class of examples with relation type at least $n-2$, where $n=μ(I)$. We also provide new classes of ideals of linear type. We propose the construction of a graph, namely the generator graph of an ideal, where the mon…
Two-dimensional squarefree monomial ideals can be seen as the Stanley-Reisner ideals of graphs. The main results of this paper are combinatorial characterizations for the Cohen-Macaulayness of ordinary and symbolic powers of such an ideal in terms of the associated graph.
Let C be a clutter and let A be its incidence matrix. If the linear system x>=0;xA<=1 has the integer rounding property, we give a description of the canonical module and the a-invariant of certain normal subrings associated to C. If the clutter is a connected graph, we describe when the aforementioned linear system has the integer rounding property in combinatorial and algebraic terms using graph theory and the theory of Rees algebras. As a consequence we show that the extended Rees algebra of the edge ideal of a bipartite graph is Gorenstein if and only if the graph is unmixed.
Let I=I(D) be the edge ideal of a weighted oriented graph D. We determine the irredundant irreducible decomposition of I. Also, we characterize the associated primes and the unmixed property of I. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial characterization for the unmixed property of I, when D is bipartite, D is a whisker or D is a cycle. Finally, we study the Cohen-Macaulay property of I.
Determining whether an arbitrary subring $R$ of $k[x_1^{\pm 1},\dots, x_n^{\pm 1}]$ is a normal domain is, in general, a nontrivial problem, even in the special case of a monomial generated domain. In this paper, we provide a complete characterization of the normality and normalizations of quadratic-monomial generated domains. For a quadratic-monomial generated domain $R$, we develop a combinatorial structure that assigns, to each quadratic monomial of the ring, an edge in a mixed signed, directed graph $G$, i.e., a graph with signed edges and directed edges. We classify the normality and the …
Symbolic powers are studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. When the ideals are generated by quadratic squarefree monomials, the generators of the symbolic powers are obstructions to vertex covering in the associated graph and its blowups. As a result, perfect graphs play an important role in the theory, dual to the role played by perfect graphs in the theory of secants of monomial ideals. We use Gröbner degenerations as a tool to reduce questions about symbolic powers of arbitrary ideals to the monomial case. Among the applications are a new, unified approach to the Gröbner b…
Let $G$ be an (oriented) graph on the vertex set $V = \{ 0, 1,\ldots,n\}$ with root $0$. Postnikov and Shapiro associated a monomial ideal $\mathcal{M}_G$ in the polynomial ring $ R = {\mathbb{K}}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$. A subideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(k)}$ of $\mathcal{M}_G$ generated by subsets of $\widetilde{V}=V\setminus \{0\}$ of size at most $k+1$ is called a $k$-skeleton ideal of the graph $G$. Many interesting homological and combinatorial properties of $1$-skeleton ideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)}$ are obtained by Dochtermann for certain classes of simple graph $G$. A finite…
We describe the typical homological properties of monomial ideals defined by random generating sets. We show that, under mild assumptions, random monomial ideals (RMI's) will almost always have resolutions of maximal length; that is, the projective dimension will almost always be $n$, where $n$ is the number of variables in the polynomial ring. We give a rigorous proof that Cohen-Macaulayness is a "rare" property. We characterize when an RMI is generic/strongly generic, and when it "is Scarf"---in other words, when the algebraic Scarf complex of $M\subset S=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ gives a minimal f…
We give a structure theorem for Cohen Macaulay monomial ideals of codimension 2, and describe all possible relation matrices of such ideals. In case that the ideal has a linear resolution, the relation matrices can be identified with the spanning trees of a connected chordal graph with the property that each distinct pair of maximal cliques of the graph has at most one vertex in common.
In a recent work, Fouli and Lin generalized a Villarreal's result and showed that if each connected components of the line graph of a squarefree monomial ideal contains at most a unique odd cycle, then this ideal is of linear type. In this short note, we reprove this result with Villarreal's original ideas together with a method of Conca and De Negri. We also propose a class of squarefree monomial ideals of linear type.
Let F be a field and let G be a finite graph with a total ordering on its edge set. Richard Stanley noted that the Stanley-Reisner ring F(G) of the broken circuit complex of G is Cohen-Macaulay. Jason Brown gave an explicit description of a homogeneous system of parameters for F(G) in terms of fundamental cocircuits in G. So F(G) modulo this hsop is a finite dimensional vector space. We conjecture an explicit monomial basis for this vector space in terms of the circuits of G and prove that the conjecture is true for two infinite families of graphs. We also explore an application of these ideas…
We present two new problems on lower bounds for resolution Betti numbers of monomial ideals generated in a fixed degree. The first concerns any such ideal and bounds the total Betti numbers, while the second concerns ideals that are quadratic and bihomogeneous with respect to two variable sets, but gives a more finely graded lower bound. These problems are solved for certain classes of ideals that generalize (in two different directions) the edge ideals of threshold graphs and Ferrers graphs. In the process, we produce particularly simple cellular linear resolutions for strongly stable and squ…
We show that a monomial ideal $I$ has projective dimension $\leq$ 1 if and only if the minimal free resolution of $S/I$ is supported on a graph that is a tree. This is done by constructing specific graphs which support the resolution of the $S/I$. We also provide a new characterization of quasi-trees, which we use to give a new proof to a result by Herzog, Hibi, and Zheng which characterizes monomial ideals of projective dimension 1 in terms of quasi-trees.

In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equ…
A graph-theoretic method, simpler than existing ones, is used to characterize the minimal set of monomial generators for the integral closure of any algebra of polynomials generated by quadratic monomials. The toric ideal of relations between these generators is generated by a set of binomials, defined graphically. The spectra of the original algebra and of its integral closure turn out to be canonically homeomorphic.
In this short note we prove that the projective dimension of a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay square-free monomial ideal is equal to the maximal height of its minimal primes (also known as the big height), or equivalently, the maximal cardinality of a minimal vertex cover of its facet complex. This in particular gives a formula for the projective dimension of facet ideals of these classes of ideals, which are known to be sequentially Cohen-Macaulay: graph trees and simplicial trees, chordal graphs and some cycles, chordal clutters and graphs, and some path ideals to mention a few. Since polarizat…
We generalize some results of $\mathrm{v}$-number for arbitrary monomial ideals by showing that the $\mathrm{v}$-number of an arbitrary monomial ideal is the same as the $\mathrm{v}$-number of its polarization. We prove that the $\mathrm{v}$-number $\mathrm{v}(I(G))$ of the edge ideal $I(G)$, the induced matching number $\mathrm{im}(G)$ and the regularity $\mathrm{reg}(R/I(G))$ of a graph $G$, satisfy $\mathrm{v}(I(G))\leq \mathrm{im}(G)\leq \mathrm{reg}(R/I(G))$, where $G$ is either a bipartite graph, or a $(C_{4},C_{5})$-free vertex decomposable graph, or a whisker graph. There is an open pr…
This is an exposition of some new results on associated primes and the depth of different kinds of powers of monomial ideals in order to show a deep connection between commutative algebra and some objects in combinatorics such as simplicial complexes, integral points in polytopes and graphs.
In this paper we extend one direction of Fröberg's theorem on a combinatorial classification of quadratic monomial ideals with linear resolutions. We do this by generalizing the notion of a chordal graph to higher dimensions with the introduction of d-chorded and orientably-d-cycle-complete simplicial complexes. We show that a certain class of simplicial complexes, the d-dimensional trees, correspond to ideals having linear resolutions over fields of characteristic 2 and also give a necessary combinatorial condition for a monomial ideal to be componentwise linear over all fields.
In this thesis we are interested in studying algebraic properties of monomial algebras, that can be linked to combinatorial structures, such as graphs and clutters, and to optimization problems. A goal here is to establish bridges between commutative algebra, combinatorics and optimization. We study the normality and the Gorenstein property-as well as the canonical module and the a-invariant-of Rees algebras and subrings arising from linear optimization problems. In particular, we study algebraic properties of edge ideals and algebras associated to uniform clutters with the max-flow min-cut pr…
Inspired by the study of random graphs and simplicial complexes, and motivated by the need to understand average behavior of ideals, we propose and study probabilistic models of random monomial ideals. We prove theorems about the probability distributions, expectations and thresholds for events involving monomial ideals with given Hilbert function, Krull dimension, first graded Betti numbers, and present several experimentally-backed conjectures about regularity, projective dimension, strong genericity, and Cohen-Macaulayness of random monomial ideals.
The machinery of zonotopal algebra is linked with two particular polytopes: the Stanley-Pitman polytope and the regular simplex $\mathfrak{Sim}_n(t_1,...,t_n)$ with parameters $t_1,...,t_n\in \mathbb{R}_+^n$, defined by the inequalities $\sum_{i=1}^n r_i\leq \sum_{i=1}^n t_i, \mbox{ } r_i\in \mathbb{R}_+^n,$ where the $(r_i)_{i\in [n]}$ are variables. Specifically, we will discuss the central Dahmen-Micchelli space of the broken wheel graph $BW_n$ and its dual, the $\mathcal{P}$-central space. We will observe that the $\mathcal{P}$-central space of $BW_n$ is monomial, with a basis given by the…
We introduce the concept of edgewise domination in clutters, and use it to provide an upper bound for the projective dimension of any squarefree monomial ideal. We then use a simple recursion to recover a formula for the projective dimension of a monomial ideal associated to a chordal clutter, as defined by Woodroofe in \cite{russ}. We also study a family of clutters associated to graphs, and show that these clutters are chordal if and only if the associated graph is. Finally, we compute domination parameters for certain classes of these clutters.
We use the correspondence between hypergraphs and their associated edge ideals to study the minimal graded free resolution of squarefree monomial ideals. The theme of this paper is to understand how the combinatorial structure of a hypergraph H appears within the resolution of its edge ideal I(H). We discuss when recursive formulas to compute the graded Betti numbers of I(H) in terms of its sub-hypergraphs can be obtained; these results generalize our previous work on the edge ideals of simple graphs. We introduce a class of hypergraphs, which we call properly-connected, that naturally general…
