Let G be a finite group and ρ: G--> End(E) be a group representation of G on a coherent sheaf over an integral scheme. The purpose of this paper shall give a decomposition theorem of such representations in non-splitting components and apply this results to the studie of Galois covers
We consider two K3 surfaces defined over an arbitrary field, together with a smooth proper moduli space of stable sheaves on each. When the moduli spaces have the same dimension, we prove that if the étale cohomology groups (with Q_ell coefficients) of the two surfaces are isomorphic as Galois representations, then the same is true of the two moduli spaces. In particular, if the field of definition is finite and the K3 surfaces have equal zeta functions, then so do the moduli spaces, even when the moduli spaces are not birational.
We develop sheaf theory in the context of difference algebraic geometry. We introduce categories of difference sheaves and develop the appropriate cohomology theories. As specializations, we get difference Galois cohomology, difference Picard group and a good theory of difference torsors.
Let $X$ be a smooth connected algebraic curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. We study the deformation of $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the function field of $X$ while keeping the local Galois representations at all places undeformed.
We show that there is a perverse sheaf on a fine moduli space of stable sheaves on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which is locally the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles for a local Chern-Simons functional, possibly after taking an etale Galois cover. This perverse sheaf lifts to a mixed Hodge module and gives us a cohomology theory which enables us to define the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants mathematically.
Let $K$ be a $C_1$-field of any characteristic and $X$ a projective variety over $K$. In this article we prove that for a finite Galois extension $L$ of $K$, a simple sheaf with covering datum on $X \times_K L$ descends to a simple sheaf on $X$. As a consequence, we show that there is a $1-1$ correspondence between the set of geometrically stable sheaves on $X$ with fixed Hibert polynomial $P$ and the set of $K$-rational points of the corresponding moduli space.
We study the equivariant sheaf counting theory on K3 surfaces with finite group actions. Let $\sS=[S/G]$ be a global quotient stack, where $S$ is a K3 surface and $G$ is a finite group acting as symplectic homomorphisms on $S$. We show that the Joyce invariants counting Gieseker semistable sheaves on $\sS$ are independent on the Bridgeland stability conditions. As an application we prove the multiple cover formula of Y. Toda for the counting invariants for semistable sheaves on local K3 surfaces with a symplectic finite group action.
We prove the equality of two non-logarithmic ramification filtrations defined by Matsuda and Abbes-Saito for the abelianized absolute Galois group of a complete discrete valuation field in positive characteristic. We also compute the refined Swan conductor and the characteristic form of a character of the fundamental group of a smooth separated scheme over a perfect field of positive characteristic by using sheaves of Witt vectors.
We investigate the behaviour of tilting sheaves under pushforward by a finite Galois morphism. We determine conditions under which such a pushforward of a tilting sheaf is a tilting sheaf. We then produce some examples of Severi Brauer flag varieties and arithmetic toric varieties in which our method produces a tilting sheaf, adding to the list of positive results in the literature. We also produce some counterexamples to show that such a pushfoward need not be a tilting sheaf.
Given a Galois étale map of varieties $π:Y\to X$ and an $\ell$-adic sheaf or derived category object $P\in D^b_c(Y,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, we study two cohomological operations: the tensor direct image and (in the case of perverse sheaves) the convolution direct image, which give objects of $D^b_c(X,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, and can be used to improve the estimates on some partial exponential sums and the number of rational points on certain varieties.
We present a new method for determining the Galois module structure of the cohomology of coherent sheaves on varieties over the integers with a tame action of a finite group. This uses a novel Adams-Riemann-Roch type theorem obtained by combining the Kunneth formula with localization in equivariant K-theory and classical results about cyclotomic fields. As an application, we show two conjectures of Chinburg-Pappas-Taylor, in the case of curves.
We compute equivariant Euler characteristics of locally free sheaves on curves, thereby generalizing several results of Kani and Nakajima. For instance, we extend Kani's computation of the Galois module structure of the space of global meromorphic differentials which are logarithmic along the ramification locus from the tamely ramified to the weakly ramified case.
The Hodge Galois group is the Tannakian Galois group of the category of real mixed Hodge structures. It has a subgroup, called the twistor Galois group, which is the Galois group of the category of mixed twistor structures, defined by C. Simpson. It is isomorphic to a semidirect product of C* and the unipotent radical of the Hodge Galois group. We define a natural action of the twistor Galois group by A-infinity autoequivalences of the derived category of complexes of sheaves with smooth cohomology on a compact smooth Kahler manifold X. The action of C* is provided by Simpson's action on irred…
Let G be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field, acting on a variety X with finitely many orbits. "Staggered sheaves" are certain complexes of G-equivariant coherent sheaves on X that seem to possess many remarkable properties. In this paper, we construct "standard" and "costandard" objects in the category of staggered sheaves, and we prove that that category has enough projectives and injectives.
In a recent paper Ben-Zvi and Nadler proved that the induction map from $B$-bundles of degree 0 to semistable $G$-bundles of degree 0 over an elliptic curve is a small map with Galois group isomorphic to the Weyl group of $G$. We generalize their result to all connected components of $\Bun_G$ for an arbitrary reductive group $G$. We prove that for every degree (i.e. topological type) there exists a unique parabolic subgroup such that any semistable $G$\nobreakdash-bundle of this degree has a reduction to it and moreover the induction map is small with Galois group the relative Weyl group of th…
Let $\mathbb{T}$ be the three dimensional torus acting on $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ and $\mathcal{M}^{\mathbb{T}}_{\mathbb{P}^{3}}(c)$ be the fixed locus of the corresponding action on the moduli space of rank $2$ framed instanton sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^{3}.$ In this work, we prove that $\mathcal{M}^{\mathbb{T}}_{\mathbb{P}^{3}}(c)$ consist only of non locally-free instanton sheaves whose double dual is the trivial bundle $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{3}}^{\oplus 2}$. Moreover, We relate these instantons to Pandharipande-Thomas stable pairs and give a classification of their support. This allows to compute…
Let X be a noetherian scheme defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic p, and G be a finite group, of order divisible by p, acting on X. We introduce a refinement of the equivariant K-theory of X to take into account the information related to modular representation theory. As an application, in the 1-dimensional case, we generalize a modular Riemann-Roch theorem given by S.Nakajima, extending the link between Galois modules and wild ramification.
Let $F$ be a torsionfree semistable coherent sheaf on a polarized normal projective variety. We prove that $F$ has a unique maximal locally free subsheaf $V$ such that $F/V$ is torsionfree and $V$ admits a filtration of subbundles for which each successive quotient is stable whose slope is $μ(F)$. We also prove that $F$ has a unique maximal reflexive subsheaf $W$ such that $F/W$ is torsionfree and $W$ admits a filtration of subsheaves for which each successive quotient is a stable reflexive sheaf whose slope is $μ(F)$. We show that these canonical subsheaves behave well with respect to the pul…
Let S be a K3 surface. In part I of this paper, we constructed a representation of the group Aut D(S), of auto-equivalences of the derived category of S. We interpreted this infinite dimensional representation, as the natural action of Aut D(S) on the cohomology of all moduli spaces of stable sheaves (with primitive Mukai vectors) on S. The main result, of part I, is the precise relation of this action with the monodromy of the Hilbert schemes S^[n] of points on the surface. The proof of the above result was reduced, in part I, to the case of two monodromy operators of S^[n], associated with c…
Deligne constructed a remarkable local system on $\bP^1-\{0,\infty\}$ attached to a family of Kloosterman sums. Katz calculated its monodromy and asked whether there are Kloosterman sheaves for general reductive groups and which automorphic forms should be attached to these local systems under the Langlands correspondence. Motivated by work of Gross and Frenkel-Gross we find an explicit family of such automorphic forms and even a simple family of automorphic sheaves in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. We use these automorphic sheaves to construct l-adic Kloosterman sheaves for…
We study the Galois actions on the l-adic schematic and Artin-Mazur homotopy groups of algebraic varieties. For proper varieties of good reduction over a local field K, we show that the l-adic schematic homotopy groups are mixed representations explicitly determined by the Galois action on cohomology of Weil sheaves, whenever l is not equal to the residue characteristic p of K. For quasi-projective varieties of good reduction, there is a similar characterisation involving the Gysin spectral sequence. When l=p, a slightly weaker result is proved by comparing the crystalline and p-adic schematic…
Given a quasi-projective variety X with only Kawamata log terminal singularities, we study the obstructions to extending finite étale covers from the smooth locus $X_{\mathrm{reg}}$ of $X$ to $X$ itself. A simplified version of our main results states that there exists a Galois cover $Y \rightarrow X$, ramified only over the singularities of $X$, such that the étale fundamental groups of $Y$ and of $Y_{\mathrm{reg}}$ agree. In particular, every étale cover of $Y_{\mathrm{reg}}$ extends to an étale cover of $Y$. As first major application, we show that every flat holomorphic bundle defined on $…
Revised: just some typos, reorganized a bit the article. It will be published in the VIASM Annual meeting, Hanoi. We give a detailed account of Deligne's letter to Drinfeld dated June 18, 2011, in which he shows that there are finitely many irreducible lisse $\bar \Q_\ell$-sheaves with bounded ramification, up to isomorphism and up to twist, on a smooth variety defined over a finite field. The proof relies on Lafforgue's Langlands correspondence over curves. In addition, Deligne shows the existence of affine moduli of finite type over $\mathbb{Q}$. A corollary of Deligne's finiteness theorem i…
Let X be a scheme, and let G be an affine group scheme acting on X. Under reasonable hypotheses on X and G, we construct a t-structure on the derived category of G-equivariant coherent sheaves that in many ways resembles the perverse coherent t-structure, but which incorporates additional information from the G-action. Under certain circumstances, this t-structure, called the "staggered t-structure," has an artinian heart, and its simple objects are particularly easy to describe. We also exhibit two small examples in which the staggered t-structure is better-behaved than the perverse coherent …
Under certain conditions, a scheme can be reconstructed from its category of quasi-coherent sheaves. The Tannakian reconstruction theorem provides another example where a geometric object can be reconstructed from an associated category, in this case the category of its finite dimensional representations. Lurie's result that the pseudofunctor which sends a geometric stack to its category of quasi-coherent sheaves is fully faithful provides a conceptual explanation for why this works. In this paper we prove a generalized Tannakian recognition theorem, in order to characterize a part of the imag…
Given a finite, flat and finitely presented group scheme $G$ over some base $S$, we introduce the notion of ramified $G$-covers and study the moduli stack $G$-Cov they form. The thesis is divided in three parts. The first one concerns the case when $G$ is a diagonalizable group scheme and it essentially coincides with arxiv:1106.2347. In the second part I deal with the general case. Assuming that the base S is affine and given an $S$-scheme $T$, I interpret $G$-covers of $T$ as particolar (lax) monoidal functors from the category of finite, $G$-equivariant locally free sheaves over $S$ to the …
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve, $G$ a reductive group, and $Bun_G(X)$ the moduli of $G$-bundles on $X$. For each point of $X$, the Satake category acts by Hecke modifications on sheaves on $Bun_G(X)$. We show that, for sheaves with nilpotent singular support, the action is locally constant with respect to the point of $X$. This equips sheaves with nilpotent singular support with a module structure over perfect complexes on the Betti moduli $Loc_{G^\vee}(X)$ of dual group local systems. In particular, we establish the "automorphic to Galois" direction in the Betti Geometric Langlands corr…
In this article we investigate the algebra and geometry of dihedral covers of smooth algebraic varieties. To this aim we first describe the Weil divisors and the Picard group of divisorial sheaves on normal double covers. Then we provide a structure theorem for dihedral covers, that is, given a smooth variety Y, we describe the algebraic "building data" on Y which are equivalent to the existence of such covers X --> Y. We introduce then two special very explicit classes of dihedral covers: the simple and the almost simple dihedral covers, and we determine their basic invariants. For the simple…
We construct automorphic representations for quasi-split groups $G$ over the function field $F=k(t)$ one of whose local components is an epipelagic representation in the sense of Reeder and Yu. We also construct the attached Galois representations under the Langlands correspondence. These Galois representations give new classes of conjecturally rigid, wildly ramified $^{L}G$-local systems over $\mathbb{P}^{1}-\{0,\infty\}$ that generalize the Kloosterman sheaves constructed earlier by Heinloth, Ngô and the author. We study the monodromy of these local systems and compute all examples when $G$ …
It known from the work of Feigin-Tsygan, Weibel and Keller that the cohomology groups of a smooth complex variety X can be recovered from (roughly speaking) its derived category of coherent sheaves. In this paper we show that for a finite group G acting on X the same procedure applied to G-equivariant sheaves gives the orbifold cohomology of X/G. As an application, in some cases we are able to obtain simple proofs of an additive isomorphism between the orbifold cohomology of X/G and the usual cohomology of its crepant resolution (the general equality of Euler and Hodge numbers was obtained ear…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective geometrically irreducible curve over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. Suppose $G$ is a finite group acting faithfully on $X$ such that $G$ has non-trivial cyclic Sylow $p$-subgroups. We show that the decomposition of the space of holomorphic differentials of $X$ into a direct sum of indecomposable $k[G]$-modules is uniquely determined by the lower ramification groups and the fundamental characters of closed points of $X$ that are ramified in the cover $X\to X/G$. We apply our method to determine the $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{F}_\ell)$-module stru…
Given a finite p-group G acting on a smooth projective curve X over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p, the dimension of the tangent space of the associated equivariant deformation functor is equal to the dimension of the space of coinvariants of G acting on the space V of global holomorphic quadratic differentials on X. We apply known results about the Galois module structure of Riemann-Roch spaces to compute this dimension when G is cyclic or when the action of G on X is weakly ramified. Moreover we determine certain subrepresentations of V, called p-rank representations.
Consider a finite group $G$ acting on a Riemann surface $S$, and the associated branched Galois cover $π_G:S \to Y=S/G$. We introduce the concept of geometric signature for the action of $G$, and we show that it captures the information of the geometric structure of the lattice of intermediate covers, the information about the isotypical decomposition of the rational representation of the group $G$ acting on the Jacobian variety $JS$ of $S$, and the dimension of the subvarieties of the isogeny decomposition of $JS$. We also give a version of Riemann's existence theorem, adjusted to the present…
Let $k$ be any field, $G$ be a finite group acting on the rational function field $k(x_g:g\in G)$ by $h\cdot x_g=x_{hg}$ for any $h,g\in G$. Define $k(G)=k(x_g:g\in G)^G$. Noether's problem asks whether $k(G)$ is rational (= purely transcendental) over $k$. A weaker notion, retract rationality introduced by Saltman, is also very useful for the study of Noether's problem. We prove that, if $G$ is a Frobenius group with abelian Frobenius kernel, then $k(G)$ is retract $k$-rational for any field $k$ satisfying some mild conditions. As an application, we show that, for any algebraic number field $…
We use tools from combinatorial group theory in order to study actions of three types on groups acting on a curve, namely the automorphism group of a compact Riemann surface, the mapping class group acting on a surface (which now is allowed to have some points removed) and the absolute Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\Q}/\Q)$ in the case of cyclic covers of the projective line.
In 1918, Noether published a paper where she studied such a problem, now called Noether's problem on rationality: Let $L=K\left( t_{1},t_{2},\cdots ,t_{n}\right) $ be a purely transcendental extension over a field $K$ and $G$ a finite subgroup acting transitively on $t_{1},t_{2},\cdots ,t_{n}$ in an evident manner. Is it true that the invariant subfield $L^{G}$ of $L$ under $% G$ is still purely transcendental over $K$? The problem has been open in general except for minor particular cases. In this paper we will attempt to understand a general theory for Noether's problem on rationality by tra…
This thesis deals with the algorithmic representation of constructible sheaves of abelian groups on the étale site of a variety over an algebraically closed field, as well as the explicit computation of their cohomology. We describe three representations of such sheaves on curves with at worst nodal singularities, as well as algorithms performing various operations (kernels and cokernels of morphisms, pullback and pushforward, internal Hom and tensor product) on these sheaves. We present an algorithm computing the cohomology complex of a locally constant constructible sheaf on a smooth or noda…
Let G be a smooth algebraic group acting on a variety X. Let F and E be coherent sheaves on X. We show that if all the higher Tor sheaves of F against G-orbits vanish, then for generic g in G, the sheaf Tor^X_j(gF, E) vanishes for all j >0. This generalizes a result of Miller and Speyer for transitive group actions and a result of Speiser, itself generalizing the classical Kleiman-Bertini theorem, on generic transversality, under a general group action, of smooth subvarieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0.
Maschke's Calabi-Yau threefold is the double cover of projective three space branched along Maschke's octic surface. This surface is defined by the lowest degree invariant of a certain finite group acting on a four dimensional vector space. Using this group, we show that the middle Betti cohomology group of the threefold decomposes into the direct sum of 150 two-dimensional Hodge substructures. We exhibit one dimensional families of rational curves on the threefold and verify that the associated Abel-Jacobi map is non-trivial. By counting the number of points over finite fields, we determine t…
Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group acting on a scheme X. Let R(G) denote the representation ring of G, and let I be the ideal in R(G) of virtual representations of rank 0. Let G(X) (resp. G(G,X)) denote the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves (resp. G-equivariant coherent sheaves) on X. Merkurjev proved that if the fundamental group of G is torsion-free, then the map of G(G,X)/IG(G,X) to G(X) is an isomorphism. Although this map need not be an isomorphism if the fundamental group of G has torsion, we prove that without the assumption on the fundamental group of G, this map is an…
We consider complex K3 surfaces with a non-symplectic group acting trivially on the algebraic cycles. Vorontsov and Kondo classified those K3 surfaces with transcendental lattice of minimal rank. The purpose of this note is to study the Galois representations associated to these K3 surfaces. The rank of the transcendental lattices is even and varies from 2 to 20, excluding 8 and 14. We show that these K3 surfaces are dominated by Fermat surfaces, and hence they are all of CM type. We will establish the modularity of the Galois representations associated to them. Also we discuss mirror symmetry…
Given a flat, finite group scheme G finitely presented over a base scheme we introduce the notion of ramified Galois cover of group G (or simply G-cover), which generalizes the notion of G-torsor. We study the stack of G-covers, denoted with G-Cov, mainly in the abelian case, precisely when G is a finite diagonalizable group scheme over Z. In this case we prove that G-Cov is connected, but it is irreducible or smooth only in few finitely many cases. On the other hand, it contains a 'special' irreducible component Z_G, which is the closure of BG and this reflects the deep connection we establis…
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field K, V the complexification of the group of rational points of E over an algebraic closure L of K, and G the Galois group Gal(L/K). We show that for each root of unity w, the set of elements g in G such that w is an eigenvalue of infinite multiplicity for g acting on V has non-empty interior.
Inspired by some recent work of M. Farber, W. Lück and M. Shubin on L2 homotopy invariants of infinite Galois coverings of simplicial complexes (L2 Betti numbers and Novikov-Shubin invariants), this article extends Atiyah's L2 index theory to coherent analytic sheaves on complex analytic spaces. Let $X$ be a complex analytic space with a proper cocompact biholomorphic action of a discrete group $G$. Let $F$ be a $G$-equivariant coherent analytic sheaf on $X$. We give a meaningful notion of a L2 section of $F$ on $X$. We also construct L2 cohomology groups. We prove that these L2 cohomology gro…
