We show that for every morphism f between nonsingular hypersurfaces of dimension at least 3 and of general type in projective space, there is an everywhere defined endomorphism F of projective space that restricts to f.
As a corollary, we see that if X,Y are nonsingular hypersurfaces of general type of dimension at least 3 such that there is a nonconstant morphism f from X to Y, then degY divides degX with quotient q, and moreover the endomorphism F of projective space is given by polynomials of degree q.
This paper studies the existence of free and very free curves on the degree 5 Fermat hypersurface in P^5 over a field of characteristic 2. We find that such curves exist in degrees 8 and 9 and not in lower degrees.
We prove analogues of several well-known results concerning rational morphisms between quadrics for the class of so-called quasilinear $p$-hypersurfaces. These hypersurfaces are nowhere smooth over the base field, so many of the geometric methods which have been successfully applied to the study of projective homogeneous varieties over fields cannot be used. We are therefore forced to take an alternative approach, which is partly facilitated by the appearance of several non-traditional features in the study of these objects from an algebraic perspective. Our main results were previously known …
We show that every morphism from a degree 5 hypersurface in 4-dimensional projective space to a nonsingular degree 3 hypersurface in 4-dimensional projective space is necessarily constant. In the process, we also classify morphisms from the projective plane to nonsingular cubic threefolds given by degree 3 polynomials.
We study the geometry of the morphism between moduli spaces of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^{n-1}$ that sends a smooth hypersurface of degree $d+1$ to its associated hypersurface of degree $n(d-1)$. As a result, we obtain a compactification of the moduli space of smooth hypersurfaces such that the induced rational map from the standard GIT compactification often contracts the discriminant divisor.
We use the cut and paste relation $[Y^{[2]}] = [Y][\mathbb{P}^m] + \mathbb{L}^2 [F(Y)]$ in $K_0(\text{Var}_k)$ of Galkin--Shinder for cubic hypersurfaces arising from projective geometry to characterize cubic hypersurfaces of sufficiently high dimension under certain numerical or genericity conditions. Removing the conditions involving the middle Betti number from the numerical conditions used extends the possible $Y$ to cubic hypersurfaces, complete intersections of two quadric hypersurfaces, or complete intersections of two quartic hypersurfaces. The same method also gives a family of other …
Special fibrations of toric varieties have been used by physicists, e.g. the school of Candelas, to construct dual pairs in the study of Het/F-theory duality. Motivated by this, we investigate in this paper the details of toric morphisms between toric varieties. In particular, a complete toric description of fibers - both generic and non-generic -, image, and the flattening stratification of a toric morphism are given. Two examples are provided to illustrate the discussions. We then turn to the study of the restriction of a toric morphism to a toric hypersurface. The details of this can be und…
We build two embedded resolution procedures of a quasi-ordinary singularity of complex analytic hypersurface, by using toric morphisms which depend only on the characteristic monomials associated to a quasi-ordinary projection of the singularity. This result answers an open problem of Lipman in Equisingularity and simultaneous resolution of singularities, Resolution of Singularities, Progress in Mathematics No. 181, 2000, 485-503. In the first procedure the singularity is embedded as hypersurface. In the second procedure, which is inspired by a work of Goldin and Teissier for plane curves (see…
In this paper we define and study real fibered morphisms. Such morphisms arise in the study of real hyperbolic hypersurfaces in projective space and other hyperbolic varieties. We show that real fibered morphisms are intimately connected to Ulrich sheaves admitting positive definite symmetric bilinear forms.
Let X/S be a quasi-projective morphism over an affine base. We develop in this article a technique for proving the existence of closed subschemes H/S of X/S with various favorable properties. We offer several applications of this technique, including the existence of finite quasi-sections in certain projective morphisms, and the existence of hypersurfaces in X/S containing a given closed subscheme C, and intersecting properly a closed set F. Assume now that the base S is the spectrum of a ring R such that for any finite morphism Z -> S, Pic(Z) is a torsion group. This condition is satisfied if…
We prove that a general determinantal hypersurface of dimension 3 is nodal. Moreover, in terms of Chern classes associated with bundle morphisms, we derive a formula for the intersection homology Euler characteristic of a general determinantal hypersurface.
In the paper untitled "Laplace equations and the Weak Lefschetz Property" the authors highlight the link between rational varieties satisfying a Laplace equation and artinian ideals that fail the Weak Lefschetz property. Continuing their work we extend this link to the more general situation of artinian ideals failing the Strong Lefschetz Property. We characterize the failure of SLP (that includes WLP) by the existence of special singular hypersurfaces (cones for WLP). This characterization allows us to solve three problems posed by Migliore and Nagel and to give new examples of ideals failing…
The objective of this article is to give an effective algebraic characterization of normal crossing hypersurfaces in complex manifolds. It is shown that a hypersurface has normal crossings if and only if it is a free divisor, has a radical Jacobian ideal and a smooth normalization. Using K. Saito's theory of free divisors, also a characterization in terms of logarithmic differential forms and vector fields is found and and finally another one in terms of the logarithmic residue using recent results of M. Granger and M. Schulze.
We use a counting argument and surgery theory to show that if $D$ is a sufficiently general algebraic hypersurface in $\Bbb C^n$, then any local diffeomorphism $F:X \to \Bbb C^n$ of simply connected manifolds which is a $d$-sheeted cover away from $D$ has degree $d=1$ or $d=\infty$ (however all degrees $d > 1$ are possible if $F$ fails to be a local diffeomorphism at even a single point). In particular, any étale morphism $F:X \to \Bbb C^n$ of algebraic varieties which covers away from such a hypersurface $D$ must be birational.
Let ${\mathcal Q}_n^d$ be the vector space of homogeneous forms of degree $d\ge 3$ on ${\mathbb C}^n$, with $n\ge 2$. The object of our study is the map $Φ$, introduced in earlier articles by J. Alper, M. Eastwood and the author, that assigns to every form for which the discriminant $Δ$ does not vanish the so-called associated form lying in the space ${\mathcal Q}_n^{n(d-2)*}$. This map is a morphism from the affine variety $X_n^d:=\{f\in{\mathcal Q}_n^d:Δ(f)\ne 0\}$ to the affine space ${\mathcal Q}_n^{n(d-2)*}$. Letting $p$ be the smallest integer for which the product $Δ^pΦ$ extends to a mo…
In this paper, we extend our result in [3] to hypersurfaces of any smooth projective variety $Y$. Precisely we let $X_0$ be a generic hypersurface of $Y$ and $c_0:\mathbf P^1\to X_0$ be a generic birational morphism to its image, i.e. $c_0\in Hom_{bir}(\mathbf P^1, X_0)$ is generic, such that (1) $dim(X_0)\geq 3$, (2) $H^1( N_{c_0/Y})=0$. Then \begin{equation} H^1(N_{c_0/X_0})=0. \end{equation} As an application we prove that the Clemens' conjecture holds for Calabi-Yau complete intersections of dimension 3.
We introduce spectral Hirzebruch-Milnor classes for singular hypersurfaces. These can be identified with Steenbrink spectra in the isolated singularity case, and may be viewed as their global analogues in general. Their definition uses vanishing cycles of mixed Hodge modules and the Todd class transformation. These are compatible with the pushforward by proper morphisms, and the classes can be calculated by using resolutions of singularities. Formulas for Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of projective hypersurfaces in terms of these classes are given in the case where the multiplicity of a generic hy…
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 4$ over the complex numbers and ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ with a fixed determinant of degree $d$. In the projectivized cotangent space at a general point $E$ of ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$, there exists a distinguished hypersurface ${\cal S}_E$ consisting of cotangent vectors with singular spectral curves. In the projectivized tangent space at $E$, there exists a distinguished subvariety ${\cal C}_E$ consisting of vectors tangent to Hecke curves in ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$ through $E$. Our main result…
In characteristic zero, the residual order constitutes, after the local multiplicity, the second key invariant for the resolution of singularities. It is defined as the order of the coefficient ideal in a local hypersurface of maximal contact, minus the exceptional multiplicities. It does not increase under blowup in permissible centers as long as the local multiplicity remains constant. In positive characteristic, however, the residual order (defined now as the maximum over all smooth local hypersurfaces) may increase under blowup. In the article we analyze in detail the circumstances when th…
In [HLY1], Hosono, Lian, and Yau posed a conjecture characterizing the set of solutions to certain Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky hypergeometric equations which are realized as periods of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in a Gorenstein Fano toric variety $X$. We prove this conjecture in the case where $X$ is a complex projective space.
We study real nonsingular projective cubic fourfolds up to deformation equivalence combined with projective equivalence and prove that they are classified by the conjugacy classes of involutions induced by the complex conjugation in the middle homology. Moreover, we provide a graph whose vertices represent the equivalence classes of such cubics and edges represent their adjacency. It turns out that this graph essentially coincides with the graph characterizing a certain adjacency of real non-polarized K3-surfaces.
Let $ϕ: X \to \mathbb P^n$ be a double cover branched along a smooth hypersurface of degree $2m, 2 \leq m \leq n-1$. We study the varieties of minimal rational tangents $\mathcal C_x \subset \mathbb P T_x(X)$ at a general point $x$ of $X$. We describe the homogeneous ideal of $\mathcal C_x$ and show that the projective isomorphism type of $\mathcal C_x$ varies in a maximal way as $x$ varies over general points of $X$. Our description of the ideal of $\mathbb C_x$ implies a certain rigidity property of the covering morphism $ϕ$. As an application of this rigidity, we show that any finite morphi…
Suppose M is a complex manifold of dimension $n+1$ and K is a hypersurface in M. By Poincaré duality we define a residue morphism $res:H^{k+1}(M\setminus K)\longrightarrow H_{2n-k}(K)$ which generalizes the classical Leray residue morphism to cohomology for smooth K. We assume that K has isolated quasihomogeneous singularities. Suppose $ω$ is a holomorphic form of the type $(n+1,0)$ with the first order pole on K. The purpose of this note is to give a short, self contained proof of a criterion which tells us when the residue of $ω$ lifts to the intersection homology of K.
Grothendieck-Chow motives of quadric hypersurfaces have provided many insights into the theory of quadratic forms. Subsequently, the landscape of motives of more general projective homogeneous varieties has begun to emerge. In particular, there have been many results which relate the motive of a one homogeneous variety to motives of other simpler or smaller ones. In this paper, we exhibit a relationship between motives of two homogeneous varieties by producing a natural rational map between them which becomes a projective bundle morphism after being resolved. This allows one to use formulas fo…
It is known that the underlying spaces of all abelian quotient singularities which are embeddable as complete intersections of hypersurfaces in an affine space can be overall resolved by means of projective torus-equivariant crepant birational morphisms in all dimensions. In the present paper we extend this result to the entire class of toric l.c.i.-singularities. Our proof makes use of Nakajima's classification theorem and of some special techniques from toric and discrete geometry.
In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a smooth variety of general type of dimension $m \geq 2$, for which its canonical map induces a double cover onto $Y$, where $Y$ is a projective bundle over $\mathbf P^1$, or onto a projective space or onto a quadric hypersurface, embedded by a complete linear series, then the general deformation of the canonical morphism of $X$ again is canonical and again induces a double cover. The second part of the article deals with the existence or non existence of canonical double structures on rational varieties. The negative result in this article has consequence…
We obtain a precise relation between the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a subvariety of projective space and the Euler characteristics of its general linear sections. In the case of a hypersurface, this leads to simple proofs of formulas of Dimca-Papadima and Huh for the degrees of the polar map of a homogeneous polynomial, extending these formula to any algebraically closed field of characteristic~0, and proving a conjecture of Dolgachev on 'homaloidal' polynomials in the same context. We generalize these formulas to subschemes of higher codimension in projective space. We also describe a…
The goal of this paper is to reveal hidden structures on the singular cohomology and the Griffiths period integral of a smooth projective hypersurface in terms of BV(Batalin-Vilkovisky) algebras and homotopy Lie theory (so called, $L_\infty$-homotopy theory). Let $X_G$ be a smooth projective hypersurface in the complex projective space $\mathbf{P}^n$ defined by a homogeneous polynomial $G(\underline x)$ of degree $d \geq 1$. Let $\mathbb{H}=H^{n-1}_{\operatorname{prim}}(X_G, \mathbb{C})$ be the middle dimensional primitive cohomology of $X_G$. We explicitly construct a BV algebra $\mathbf{B\!\…
