We reduce the Abundance Conjecture in dimension 4 to the following numerical statement: if the canonical divisor K is nef and has maximal nef dimension, then K is big. From this point of view, we ``classify'' in dimension 2 nef divisors which have maximal nef dimension, but which are not big.
In this paper, we investigate higher order minimal families $H_i$ of rational curves associated to Fano manifolds $X$. We prove that $H_i$ is also a Fano manifold if the Chern characters of $X$ satisfy some positivity conditions. We also provide a sufficient condition for Fano manifolds to be covered by higher rational manifolds.
In this article we prove a finiteness result on the number of log minimal models for $3$-folds in char $p>5$. We then use this result to prove a version of Batyrev's conjecture on the structure of nef cone of curves on $3$-folds in characteristic $p>5$. We also give a proof of the same conjecture in full generality in characteristic $0$. We further verify that the duality of movable curves and pseudo-effective divisors hold in arbitrary characteristic. We then give a criterion for the pseudo-effectiveness of the canonical divisor $K_X$ of a smooth projective variety in arbitrary characteristic…
We apply Ueda theory to a study of singular Hermitian metrics of a (strictly) nef line bundle $L$. Especially we study minimal singular metrics of $L$, metrics of $L$ with the mildest singularities among singular Hermitian metrics of $L$ whose local weights are plurisubharmonic. In some situations, we determine a minimal singular metric of $L$. As an application, we give new examples of (strictly) nef line bundles which admit no smooth Hermitian metric with semi-positive curvature.
We study lc pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor. After proving the minimal model theory for projective lc pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor, we prove the effectivity of the Iitaka fibrations and some boundedness results for dlt pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor.
In this article, we use the cone of nef curves to study minimal log discrepancies. The first result is an improvement of the nef cone theorem in the case of log Calabi-Yau dlt pairs. Then, we prove that the ascending chain condition for $n$-dimensional minimal log discrepancies of regularity one holds around zero. Furthermore, we show that there exists an upper bound for the minimal log discrepancy of any $n$-dimensional klt singularity of regularity one.
A necessary and sufficient condition is given for semi-ampleness of a numerically effective (nef) and big line bundle in positive characteristic. One application is to the geometry of the universal stable curve over M_g, specifically, the semi-ampleness of the relative dualizing sheaf, in positive characteristic. An example is given which shows this and the semi-ampleness criterion fail in characteristic zero. A second application is to Mori's program for minimal models of 3-folds in positive characteristic, namely, to the existence of birational extremal contractions.
In this paper, we classify projective toric birational morphisms from Gorenstein toric 3-folds onto the 3-dimensional affine space with relatively ample anti-canonical divisors.
Let X be a projective irreducible symplectic manifold and L a non trivial nef divisor on X. Assume that the nef dimension of L is strictly less than the dimension of X. We prove that L is semiample
Let $X$ be the wonderful compactification of a complex symmetric space $G/H$ of minimal rank. For a point $x\,\in\, G$, denote by $Z$ be the closure of $BxH/H$ in $X$, where $B$ is a Borel subgroup of $G$. The universal cover of $G$ is denoted by $\widetilde{G}$. Given a $\widetilde{G}$ equivariant vector bundle $E$ on $X,$ we prove that $E$ is nef (respectively, ample) if and only if its restriction to $Z$ is nef (respectively, ample). Similarly, $E$ is trivial if and only if its restriction to $Z$ is so.
We study tautological vector bundles over the Hilbert scheme of points on surfaces. For each K-trivial surface, we write down a simple criterion ensuring that the tautological bundles are big and nef, and illustrate it by examples. In the K3 case, we extend recent constructions and results of Bini, Boissière and Flamini from the Hilbert scheme of 2 and 3 points to an arbitrary number of points. Among the K-trivial surfaces, the case of Enriques surfaces is the most involved. Our techniques apply to other smooth projective surfaces, including blowups of K3s and minimal surfaces of general type,…
We study the Iitaka-Kodaira dimension of nef relative anti-canonical divisors. As a consequence, we prove that given a complex projective variety with klt singularities, if the anti-canonical divisor is nef, then the dimension of a general fibre of the maximal rationally connected fibration is at least the Iitaka-Kodaira dimension of the anti-canonical divisor.
We prove that if $(X,A+B)$ is a pair defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic such that $(X,B)$ is strongly $F$-regular, $A$ is ample and $K_X+A+B$ is strictly nef, then $K_X+A+B$ is ample. Similarly, we prove that for a log pair $(X,A+B)$ with $A$ being ample and $B$ effective, $K_X+A+B$ is big if it is nef and of maximal nef dimension. As an application, we establish a rationality theorem for the nef threshold and various results towards the minimal model program in dimension three in positive characteristic.
On a projective surface it is well-known that the set of curves orthogonal to a nef line bundle is either finite or uncountable. We show that this dichotomy fails in higher dimension by constructing a nef line bundle on a threefold which is trivial on countably infinitely many curves. This answers a question of Totaro. As a pleasant corollary, we exhibit a quasi-projective variety with only a countably infinite set of complete, positive-dimensional subvarieties.
We will prove the following results for $3$-fold pairs $(X,B)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>5$: log flips exist for $\Q$-factorial dlt pairs $(X,B)$; log minimal models exist for projective klt pairs $(X,B)$ with pseudo-effective $K_X+B$; the log canonical ring $R(K_X+B)$ is finitely generated for projective klt pairs $(X,B)$ when $K_X+B$ is a big $\Q$-divisor; semi-ampleness holds for a nef and big $\Q$-divisor $D$ if $D-(K_X+B)$ is nef and big and $(X,B)$ is projective klt; $\Q$-factorial dlt models exist for lc pairs $(X,B)$; terminal models exist for klt pair…
We classify smooth complex projective varieties $X \subset \proj^N$ of dimension $2s+1$ containing a linear subspace $Λ$ of dimension $s$ whose normal bundle $N_{Λ/X}$ is numerically effective.
Given a compact Kähler manifold $X$ it is interesting to ask whether it admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric. In this short note we show that there always exist cscK metrics on compact Kähler manifolds with nef canonical bundle, thus on all smooth minimal models, and also on the blowup of any such manifold. This confirms an expectation of Jian-Shi-Song \cite{JianShiSong} and extends their main result from $K_X$ semi-ample to $K_X$ nef, with a direct proof that does not appeal to the Abundance conjecture. As a byproduct we obtain that the connected component $\mathrm{Aut}_0(X…
Let $X$ be a variety with at most terminal $\mathbb Q$-factorial singularities of dimension $n$. We study local contractions $f:X\to Z$ supported by a $\mathbb Q$-Cartier divisor of the type $K_X+ τL$, where $L$ is an $f$-ample Cartier divisor and $τ\geq 0$ is a rational number. Equivalently, $f$ is a Fano-Mori contraction associated to an extremal face in $\overline {NE(X)}_{K_X+τL = 0}$; these maps naturally arise in the context of the minimal model program. We prove that, if $τ> (n-3) >0$, the general element $X' \in |L|$ is a variety with at most terminal singularities. Then we apply this …
We use the canonical bundle formula for parabolic fibrations to give an inductive approach to the generalized abundance conjecture using nef reduction. In particular, we observe that generalized abundance holds for a klt pair $(X,B)$ if the nef dimension $n(K_X+B+L)=2$ and $K_X+B \geq 0$ or $n(K_X+B+L)=3$ and $κ(K_X+B )>0$.
In these notes we investigate the cone of nef curves of projective varieties, which is the dual cone to the cone of pseudo-effective divisors. We prove a structure theorem for the cone of nef curves of projective $\mathbb Q$-factorial klt pairs of arbitrary dimension from the point of view of the Minimal Model Program. This is a generalization of Batyrev's structure theorem for the cone of nef curves of projective terminal threefolds.
Let $X$ be a projective manifold of dimension $n$ and $L$ a strictly nef line bundle on $X$. Then $K_X+tL$ is ample if $t > n+1$ in the following cases. 1.) $\text{dim} X = 3$ unless (possibly) $X$ is a Calabi-Yau with $c_2 \cdot L=0$; 2.) $κ(X) \ge n-2$; 3.) $\text{dim} α(X) \ge n-2$, with $α: X \to A$ the Albanese map.
Serrrano's Conjecture says that if $L$ is a strictly nef line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$, then $K_X+tL$ is ample for $ t > dim X+1$. In this paper I will prove a few cases of this conjecture. I will also prove a generalized version of this conjecture (due to Campana, Chen and Peternell) for surfaces. In the last section, assuming the SHGH conjecture, I will give a series of examples of strictly nef non ample divisors on surfaces of arbitary Kodaira dimension.
In this paper, we study the divisor theory of the Simpson moduli space of semistable sheaves of dimension 1 on the projective plane. We prove that these spaces are all Mori dream spaces, and calculate their nef cones. We also study the effective cones of these spaces for most choices of numerical invariants. As a consequence, we work out precisely when two such spaces are isomorphic.
Let $X$ be a normal projective threefold with mild singularities, and $L_X$ a strictly nef $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor on $X$. First, we show the ampleness of $K_X+tL_X$ with sufficiently large $t$ if either the Kodaira dimension $κ(X)\neq 0$ or the augmented irregularity $q^{\circ}(X)\neq 0$. Second, we show that, if $(X,Δ)$ is a projective klt threefold pair with the anti-log canonical divisor $-(K_X+Δ)$ being strictly nef, then $X$ is rationally connected.
Any ample Cartier divisor D on a projective variety X is strictly nef (i.e. D.C>0 for any effective curve C on X). In general, the converse statement does not hold. But this is conjectured to be true for anticanonical divisors. The present paper establishes this fact for normal complex projective threefolds with canonical singularities. This result extends several previously known special cases. The proof rests mainly on sophisticated techniques of three dimensional birational geometry developed in the last two decades.
Using currents with minimal singularities, we construct pointwise minimal multiplicities for a real pseudo-effective $(1,1)$-class $α$ on a compact complex $n$-fold $X$, which are the local obstructions to the numerical effectivity of $α$. The negative part of $α$ is then defined as the real effective divisor $N(α)$ whose multiplicity along a prime divisor $D$ is just the generic multiplicity of $α$ along $D$, and we get in that way a divisorial Zariski decomposition of $α$ into the sum of a class $Z(α)$ which is nef in codimension 1 and the class of its negative part $N(α)$, which is exceptio…
We construct Q-factorial terminal Fano varieties, starting in dimension 4, whose nef cone jumps when the variety is deformed. It follows that de Fernex and Hacon's results on deformations of 3-dimensional Fanos are optimal. The examples are based on the existence of high-dimensional flips which deform to isomorphisms, generalizing the Mukai flop. We also extend de Fernex and Hacon's positive results on deformations of Fano varieties. Toric Fano varieties which are smooth in codimension 2 and Q-factorial in codimension 3 are rigid. The divisor class group is deformation-invariant for klt Fanos …
We give another alternative proof to the Kawamata semiampleness theorem for the log canonical divisors on klt varieties which are nef and abundant. After the first version of this article was posted to the e-print Arxiv, Prof. Fujino notified the author that the quick and essential proof ([Fujino. On Kawamata's theorem.(EMS 2011), Rem 2.7]) is already known. The author would like to thank him. More precisely, Prof. Fujino already gave the quick and essential proof ([Fujino. On Kawamata's thm.(EMS 2011), Rem 2.7], [Fujino. Finite generation of the lc ring in dim 4. (Kyoto J. Math. 50 (2010)), R…
We determine the cone of nef divisors on the Voronoi compactification A_g^* of the moduli space A_g of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g for genus g=2,3. As a corollary we obtain that the spaces A_g^*(n) with level-n structure are a minimal, resp. canonical, model for g=2, n>=4, resp. n>=5 and g=3, n>=3, resp. n>=4. We give two proofs: The easy and quick one reduces the problem to \bar M_g where we can use a result of Faber. This approach cannot be generalized to higher genus g. The main point of the paper is, therefore, to give a second proof using theta functions and a r…
For a minimal $3$-fold $X$ with $K_X\equiv 0$ and a nef and big Weil divisor $L$ on $X$, we investigate the birational geometry inspired by $L$. We prove that $|mL|$ and $|K_X+mL|$ give birational maps for all $m\geq 17$. The result remains true under weaker assumption that $L$ is big and has no stable base components.
We first introduce a weak type of Zariski decomposition in higher dimensions: an $\R$-Cartier divisor has a weak Zariski decomposition if birationally and in a numerical sense it can be written as the sum of a nef and an effective $\R$-Cartier divisor. We then prove that there is a very basic relation between Zariski decompositions and log minimal models which has long been expected: we prove that assuming the log minimal model program in dimension $d-1$, a lc pair $(X/Z,B)$ of dimension $d$ has a log minimal model if and only if $K_X+B$ has a weak Zariski decomposition$/Z$.
We prove a Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem on a normal compact Kahler space X: if L is a nef line bundle with numerical dimension at least equal to 2, then the q-th cohomology group of K_X+L vanishes for q at least equal to the dimension of X minus 1. As an application, a special case of the abundance conjecture for minimal Kahler threefolds is proven: if X is a minimal Kahler threefold (in the usual sense that K_X is nef), then the Kodaira dimension kappa(X) is nonnegative.
Let $(X, ω)$ be an n-dimensional compact Kähler manifold. Let $D=\sum (1-β_j) Y_j=\sum (1-β_j) [s_j=0]$ a divisor with simple normal crossings with $β_j \in ]0,1[$ such that $-(K_X+D)$ is nef. We show that its Albanese map is submersion outside an analytic set of codimension larger than two with connected fibres.
Let $(X, Δ)$ be a projective klt three dimensional pair defined over an algebraically closed field characteristic larger than 5. Let $L$ be a nef and big line bundle on $X$ such that $L-K_X-Δ$ is big and nef. We show that $L$ is indeed semi-ample.
In this paper we show that a smooth toric variety $X$ of Picard number $r\leq 3$ always admits a nef primitive collection supported on a hyperplane admitting non-trivial intersection with the cone $\Nef(X)$ of numerically effective divisors and cutting a facet of the pseudo-effective cone $\Eff(X)$, that is $\Nef(X)\cap\partial\overline{\Eff}(X)\neq\{0\}$. In particular this means that $X$ admits non-trivial and non-big numerically effective divisors. Geometrically this guarantees the existence of a fiber type contraction morphism over a smooth toric variety of dimension and Picard number lowe…
Let X be a smooth projective surface of irregularity 0. The Hilbert scheme of n points on X parameterizes zero-dimensional subschemes of X of length n. In this paper, we discuss general methods for studying the cone of ample divisors on the Hilbert scheme. We then use these techniques to compute the cone of ample divisors on the Hilbert scheme for several surfaces where the cone was previously unknown. Our examples include families of surfaces of general type and del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1. The methods rely on Bridgeland stability and the Positivity Lemma of Bayer and Macri.
Taubes established fundamental properties of $J-$holomorphic subvarieties in dimension 4 in \cite{T1}. In this paper, we further investigate properties of reducible $J-$holomorphic subvarieties. We offer an upper bound of the total genus of a subvariety when the class of the subvariety is $J-$nef. For a spherical class, it has particularly strong consequences. It is shown that, for any tamed $J$, each irreducible component is a smooth rational curve. We also completely classify configurations of maximal dimension. To prove these results we treat subvarieties as weighted graphs and introduce se…
We give a concrete expression of a minimal singular metric of a big line bundle on a compact Kähler manifold which is the total space of a toric bundle over a complex torus. In this class of manifolds, Nakayama constructed examples which have line bundles admitting no Zariski-decomposition even after any proper modifications. As an application, we discuss the Zariski-closedness of non-nef loci and the openness conjecture of Demailly and Kollár in this class.
In this paper we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $ε$-lc singularities for $ε>0$, and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_X$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,ε$. This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessaril…
We study how the geometry of a projective variety $X$ is reflected in the positivity properties of the diagonal $Δ_X$ considered as a cycle on $X \times X$. We analyze when the diagonal is big, when it is nef, and when it is rigid. In each case, we give several implications for the geometric properties of $X$. For example, when the diagonal is big, we prove that the Hodge groups $H^{k,0}(X)$ vanish for $k>0$. We also classify varieties of low dimension where the diagonal is nef and big.
We study the positivity of complete intersections of nef classes. We first give a sufficient and necessary characterization on the complete intersection classes which have hard Lefschetz property on a compact complex torus, equivalently, in the linear case. In turn, this provides us new kinds of cohomology classes which have Hodge-Riemann property or hard Lefschetz property on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold. We also give a complete characterization on when the complete intersection classes are non-vanishing on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold. Both characterizations are given by the …
We investigate the minimal singularities of metrics on a big line bundle $L$ over a projective manifold when the stable base locus $Y$ of $L$ is a submanifold of codimension $r\geq 1$. Under some assumptions on the normal bundle and a neighborhood of $Y$, we give a explicit description of the minimal singularity of metrics on $L$. We apply this result to study a higher (co-)dimensional analogue of Zariski's example, in which the line bundle $L$ is not semi-ample, however it is nef and big.
