Linear functions of many independent random variables lead to classical noises (white, Poisson, and their combinations) in the scaling limit. Some singular stochastic flows and some models of oriented percolation involve very nonlinear functions and lead to nonclassical noises. Two examples are examined, Warren's `noise made by a Poisson snake' and the author's `Brownian web as a black noise'. Classical noises are stable, nonclassical are not. A new framework for the scaling limit is proposed. Old and new results are presented about noises, stability, and spectral measures.
We study stochastic SQG equations on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ with multiplicative transport noise in the $L^2$-setting. Under a suitable scaling of the noise, we show that the solutions converge weakly to the unique solution to the deterministic dissipative SQG equation. A similar scaling limit result is proved also for the stochastic 2D inviscid critical Boussinesq equations.
We study the stability of reaction-diffusion equations in presence of noise. The relationship of stability of solutions between the stochastic ordinary different equations and the corresponding stochastic reaction-diffusion equation is firstly established. Then, by using the Lyapunov method, sufficient conditions for mean square and stochastic stability are given. The results show that the multiplicative noise can make the solution stable, but the additive noise will be not.
We give a multivariate generalization of Borell's noise stability theorem for Gaussian vectors. As a consequence we recover two inequalities, also due to Borell, for exit times of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
We consider the modified Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (mSQG) equation on the 2D torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, perturbed by multiplicative transport noise. The equation admits the white noise measure on $\mathbb{T}^2$ as the invariant measure. We first prove the existence of white noise solutions to the stochastic equation via the method of point vortex approximation, then, under a suitable scaling limit of the noise, we show that the solutions converge weakly to the unique stationary solution of the dissipative mSQG equation driven by space-time white noise. The weak uniqueness of the latter equation is …
We prove that a system of locally interacting diffusions carrying discrete masses, subject to an environmental noise and undergoing mass coagulation, converges to a system of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs) with Smoluchowski-type nonlinearity. Existence, uniqueness and regularity of the SPDEs are also proven.
We prove the exponential stability of the zero solution of a stochastic differential equation with a Hölder noise, under the strong dissipativity assumption. As a result, we also prove that there exists a random pullback attractor for a stochastic system under a multiplicative fractional Brownian noise.
We consider a family of stochastic 2D Euler equations in vorticity form on the torus, with transport type noises and $L^2$-initial data. Under a suitable scaling of the noises, we show that the solutions converge weakly to that of the deterministic 2D Navier--Stokes equations. Consequently, we deduce that the weak solutions of the stochastic 2D Euler equations are approximately unique and "weakly quenched exponential mixing".
Noise sensitivity of functions on the leaves of a binary tree is studied, and a hypercontractive inequality is obtained. We deduce that the spider walk is not noise stable.
In this article, we study the stability of solutions to 3D stochastic primitive equations driven by fractional noise. Since the fractional Brownian motion is essentially different from Brownian motion, lots of stochastic analysis tools are not available to study the exponential stability for the stochastic systems. Therefore, apart from the standard method for the case of Brownian motion, we develop a new method to show that 3D stochastic primitive equations driven by fractional noise converge almost surely exponentially to the stationary solutions. This method may be applied to other stochast…
We construct a noise stable sequence of transitive, monotone increasing Boolean functions $f_n: \{-1,1\}^{k_n} \longrightarrow \{-1,1\}$ which admit many pivotals with high probability. We show that such a sequence is volatile as well, and thus it is also an example of a volatile and noise stable sequence of transitive, monotone functions.
During the past 15 years, several extensions of the concepts noise sensitivity and noise stability, first coined in~\cite{schramm2000}, has been studied. The purpose in this paper is to give definitions of this concepts in the setting of continuous time Markov chains, which then unifies many of the previously considered generalizations. In addition, a considerable amount of time is spent on proving the existence of sequences of noise stable and nondegenerate functions with respect to various classes of Markov chains, a problem which interestingly will appear to have close connections to the so…
Consider a collection of particles whose state evolution is described through a system of interacting diffusions in which each particle is driven by an independent individual source of noise and also by a small amount of noise that is common to all particles. The interaction between the particles is due to the common noise and also through the drift and diffusion coefficients that depend on the state empirical measure. We study large deviation behavior of the empirical measure process which is governed by two types of scaling, one corresponding to mean field asymptotics and the other to the Fr…
We prove that under the Gaussian measure, half-spaces are uniquely the most noise stable sets. We also prove a quantitative version of uniqueness, showing that a set which is almost optimally noise stable must be close to a half-space. This extends a theorem of Borell, who proved the same result but without uniqueness, and it also answers a question of Ledoux, who asked whether it was possible to prove Borell's theorem using a direct semigroup argument. Our quantitative uniqueness result has various applications in diverse fields.
We consider stochastic partial differential equations on $\mathbb{R}^{d}, d\geq 1$, driven by a Gaussian noise white in time and colored in space, for which the pathwise uniqueness holds. By using the Skorokhod representation theorem we establish various strong stability results. Then, we give an application to the convergence of the Picard successive approximation. Finally, we show that in the sense of Baire category, almost all stochastic partial differential equations with continuous and bounded coefficients have the properties of existence and uniqueness of solutions as well as the continu…
Consider a random process s solution of the stochastic partial differential equation Ls = w with L a homogeneous operator and w a multidimensional Lévy white noise. In this paper, we study the asymptotic effect of zooming in or zooming out of the process s. More precisely, we give sufficient conditions on L and w so that the rescaled versions of s converges in law to a self-similar process of order H at coarse scales and at fine scales. The parameter H depends on the homogeneity order of the operator L and the Blumenthal-Getoor indices associated to the Lévy white noise w. Finally, we apply ou…
We use Yosida approximation to find an Itô formula for mild solutions $\left\{X^x(t), t\geq 0\right\}$ of SPDEs with Gaussian and non-Gaussian coloured noise, the non Gaussian noise being defined through compensated Poisson random measure associated to a Lévy process. The functions to which we apply such Itô formula are in $C^{1,2}([0,T]\times H)$, as in the case considered for SDEs in [9]. Using this Itô formula we prove exponential stability and exponential ultimate boundedness properties in mean square sense for mild solutions. We also compare such Itô formula to an Itô formula for mild sol…
We consider a hidden Markov model with multiplicative noise emerging from studies of software reliability. We show the stability of the optimal filter with respect to general initial conditions in the total variation- and $L^p$-norm and deduce explicit rates. Remarkably, stability turns out to be independent of the ergodic behavior of the signal.
The stability and ergodicity properties of two adaptive random walk Metropolis algorithms are considered. The both algorithms adjust the scaling of the proposal distribution continuously based on the observed acceptance probability. Unlike the previously proposed forms of the algorithms, the adapted scaling parameter is not constrained within a predefined compact interval. The first algorithm is based on scale adaptation only, while the second one incorporates also covariance adaptation. A strong law of large numbers is shown to hold assuming that the target density is smooth enough and has ei…
We consider white noise perturbations of a nonlinear dynamical system in the neighborhood of an unstable critical point with linearization given by a Jordan block of full dimension. For the associated exit problem, we study the joint limiting behavior of the exit location and exit time, in the vanishing noise limit. The exit typically happens near one of two special deterministic points associated with the eigendirection, and we obtain several more terms in the expansion for the exit point. The leading correction term is deterministic and logarithmic in the noise magnitude, while the random re…
We study the Gaussian noise stability of subsets A of Euclidean space satisfying A=-A. It is shown that an interval centered at the origin, or its complement, maximizes noise stability for small correlation, among symmetric subsets of the real line of fixed Gaussian measure. On the other hand, in dimension two and higher, the ball or its complement does not always maximize noise stability among symmetric sets of fixed Gaussian measure. In summary, we provide the first known positive and negative results for the Symmetric Gaussian Problem.
Questions of noise stability play an important role in hardness of approximation in computer science as well as in the theory of voting. In many applications, the goal is to find an optimizer of noise stability among all possible partitions of $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n \geq 1$ to $k$ parts with given Gaussian measures $μ_1,\ldots,μ_k$. We call a partition $ε$-optimal, if its noise stability is optimal up to an additive $ε$. In this paper, we give an explicit, computable function $n(ε)$ such that an $ε$-optimal partition exists in $\mathbb{R}^{n(ε)}$. This result has implications for the computabil…
Using the calculus of variations, we prove that a Euclidean set of fixed Gaussian measure that nearly maximizes Gaussian noise stability is close to a half space. The main result proves a modification of a conjecture of Eldan from 2013: a robust Borell inequality that removes a logarithmic dependence on the distance of the set to a half space. For sets of Gaussian measure $1/2$, we prove Eldan's 2013 conjecture. The noise stability of a Euclidean set $A$ with correlation $ρ$ is the probability that $(X,Y)\in A\times A$, where $X,Y$ are standard Gaussian random vectors with correlation $ρ\in(-1…
This article studies the scaling limit of a class of shot-noise fields defined on an independently marked stationary Poisson point process and with a power law response function. Under appropriate conditions, it is shown that the shot-noise field can be scaled suitably to have a $α$-stable limit, intensity of the underlying point process goes to infinity. It is also shown that the finite dimensional distributions of the limiting random field have i.i.d. stable random components. We hence propose to call this limte the $α$- stable white noise field. Analogous results are also obtained for the e…
Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm (2001) showed that weighted majority functions of $n$ independent unbiased bits are uniformly stable under noise: when each bit is flipped with probability $ε$, the probability $p_ε$ that the weighted majority changes is at most $Cε^{1/4}$. They asked what is the best possible exponent that could replace 1/4. We prove that the answer is 1/2. The upper bound obtained for $p_ε$ is within a factor of $\sqrt{π/2}+o(1)$ from the known lower bound when $ε\to 0$ and $nε\to \infty$.
Let $T_ε$ be the noise operator acting on Boolean functions $f:\{0, 1\}^n\to \{0, 1\}$, where $ε\in[0, 1/2]$ is the noise parameter. Given $α>1$ and fixed mean $\mathbb{E} f$, which Boolean function $f$ has the largest $α$-th moment $\mathbb{E}(T_εf)^α$? This question has close connections with noise stability of Boolean functions, the problem of non-interactive correlation distillation, and Courtade-Kumar's conjecture on the most informative Boolean function. In this paper, we characterize maximizers in some extremal settings, such as low noise ($ε=ε(n)$ is close to 0), high noise ($ε=ε(n)$ i…
We investigate the homology of an unbounded noisy sample on $\mathbb{R}^d$, under various assumptions on the sampling density. This investigation is based on previous results by Adler, Bobrowski, and Weinberger (\cite{crackle}), and Owada and Adler (\cite{topoCrackle}). There, it was found that unbounded noise generally introduces non-vanishing homology, a phenomenon called \textit{topological crackle}, unless the density has superexponential decay on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show how some well-chosen \textit{non-trivial} variable bandwidth constructions can extend the class of densities where crack…
We develop a "weak Ważewski principle" for discrete and continuous time dynamical systems on metric spaces having a weaker topology to show that attractors can be continued in a weak sense. After showing that the Wasserstein space of a proper metric space is weakly proper we give a sufficient and necessary condition such that a continuous map (or semiflow) induces a continuous map (or semiflow) on the Wasserstein space. In particular, if these conditions hold then the global attractor, viewed as invariant measures, can be continued under Markov-type random perturbations which are sufficiently …
This paper studies path stabilities of the solution to stochastic differential equations (SDE) driven by time-changed Lévy noise. The conditions for the solution of time-changed SDE to be path stable and exponentially path stable are given. Moreover, we reveal the important role of the time drift in determining the path stability properties of the solution. Related examples are provided.
We consider a variant of the classical notion of noise on the Boolean hypercube which gives rise to a new approach to inequalities regarding noise stability. We use this approach to give a new proof of the Majority is Stablest theorem by Mossel, O'Donnell, and Oleszkiewicz, improving the dependence of the bound on the maximal influence of the function from logarithmic to polynomial. We also show that a variant of the conjecture by Courtade and Kumar regarding the most informative Boolean function, where the classical noise is replaced by our notion, holds true. Our approach is based on a stoch…
This paper studies stabilities of stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by time-changed Lévy noise in both probability and moment sense. This provides more flexibility in modeling schemes in application areas including physics, biology, engineering, finance and hydrology. Necessary conditions for solution of time-changed SDE to be stable in different senses will be established. Connection between stability of solution to time-changed SDE and that to corresponding original SDE will be disclosed. Examples related to different stabilities will be given. We study SDEs with time-changed Lév…
