We consider the Lagrange problem of optimal control with unrestricted controls and address the question: under what conditions we can assure optimal controls are bounded? This question is related to the one of Lipschitzian regularity of optimal trajectories, and the answer to it is crucial for closing the gap between the conditions arising in the existence theory and necessary optimality conditions. Rewriting the Lagrange problem in a parametric form, we obtain a relation between the applicability conditions of the Pontryagin maximum principle to the later problem and the Lipschitzian regularity conditions for the original problem. Under the standard hypotheses of coercivity of the existence theory, the conditions imply that the optimal controls are essentially bounded, assuring the applicability of the classical necessary optimality conditions like the Pontryagin maximum principle. The result extends previous Lipschitzian regularity results to cover optimal control problems with general nonlinear dynamics.
Asymptotic stationarity and regularity conditions turned out to be quite useful to study the qualitative properties of numerical solution methods for standard nonlinear and complementarity-constrained programs. In this paper, we first extend these notions to nonlinear optimization problems with nonsmooth but Lipschitzian data functions in order to find reasonable notions of asymptotic stationarity and regularity in terms of Clarke's and Mordukhovich's subdifferential construction. Particularly, we compare the associated novel asymptotic constraint qualifications with already existing ones. The…
This paper is devoted to the analysis of a finite horizon discrete-time stochastic optimal control problem, in presence of constraints. We study the regularity of the value function which comes from the dynamic programming algorithm. We derive accurate estimates of the Lipschitz constant of the value function, by means of a regularity result of the multifunction that defines the admissible control set. In the last section we discuss an application to an optimal asset-allocation problem.
The presence of Lipschitzian properties for solution mappings associated with nonlinear parametric optimization problems is desirable in the context of stability analysis or bilevel optimization. An example of such a Lipschitzian property for set-valued mappings, whose graph is the solution set of a system of nonlinear inequalities and equations, is R-regularity. Based on the so-called relaxed constant positive linear dependence constraint qualification, we provide a criterion ensuring the presence of the R-regularity property. In this regard, our analysis generalizes earlier results of that t…
In this paper, we consider the well-known following shape optimization problem: $$λ_2(Ω^*)=\min_{\stackrel{|Ω|=V_0} {Ω\textrm{ convex}}} λ_2(Ω),$$ where $λ_2(\Om)$ denotes the second eigenvalue of the Laplace operator with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in $\Om\subset\R^2$, and $|\Om|$ is the area of $\Om$. We prove, under some technical assumptions, that any optimal shape $Ω^*$ is $\mathcal{C}^{1,\frac{1}{2}}$ and is not $\C^{1,α}$ for any $α>\frac{1}{2}$. We also derive from our strategy some more general regularity results, in the framework of partially overdetermined boundary va…
This paper discusses the regularity of multiple-valued Dirichlet minimizing maps into the sphere. It shows that even at branched point, as long as the normalized energy is small enough, we have the energy decay estimate. Combined with the previous work by Chun-Chi Lin, we get our first estimate that m-2 dimensional Hausdorff measure of singular set is zero. Furthermore, by looking at the tangent map and using dimension reduction argument, we show that the singular set is at least of codimension 3.
In this paper we prove the strong Sard conjecture for sub-Riemannian structures on 3-dimensional analytic manifolds. More precisely, given a totally nonholonomic analytic distribution of rank 2 on a 3-dimensional analytic manifold, we investigate the size of the set of points that can be reached by singular horizontal paths starting from a given point and prove that it has Hausdorff dimension at most 1. In fact, provided that the lengths of the singular curves under consideration are bounded with respect to a given complete Riemannian metric, we demonstrate that such a set is a semianalytic cu…
Minimax optimization problems are an important class of optimization problems arising from both modern machine learning and from traditional research areas. We focus on the stability of constrained minimax optimization problems based on the notion of local minimax point by Dai and Zhang (2020). Firstly, we extend the classical Jacobian uniqueness conditions of nonlinear programming to the constrained minimax problem and prove that this set of properties is stable with respect to small $C^2$ perturbation. Secondly, we provide a set of conditions, called Property A, which does not require the st…
In this paper, we propose new linearly convergent second-order methods for minimizing convex quartic polynomials. This framework is applied for designing optimization schemes, which can solve general convex problems satisfying a new condition of quartic regularity. It assumes positive definiteness and boundedness of the fourth derivative of the objective function. For such problems, an appropriate quartic regularization of Damped Newton Method has global linear rate of convergence. We discuss several important consequences of this result. In particular, it can be used for constructing new seco…
We consider the problem of minimizing the bending or elastic energy among Jordan curves confined in a given open set $Ω$. We prove existence, regularity and some structural properties of minimizers. In particular, when $Ω$ is convex we show that a minimizer is necessarily a convex curve. We also provide an example of a minimizer with self-intersections.
We propose a model for finding one-dimensional structure in a given measure. Our approach is based on minimizing an objective functional which combines the average-distance functional to measure the quality of the approximation and penalizes the curvature, similarly to the elastica functional. Introducing the curvature penalization overcomes some of the shortcomings of the average-distance functional, in particular the lack of regularity of minimizers. We establish existence, uniqueness and regularity of minimizers of the proposed functional. In particular we establish $C^{1,1}$ estimates on t…
This article deals with the Lipschitz regularity of the ''approximate`` minimizers for the Bolza type control functional of the form \[J_t(y,u):=\int_t^TΛ(s,y(s), u(s))\,ds+g(y(T))\] among the pairs $(y,u)$ satisfying a prescribed initial condition $y(t)=x$, where the state $y$ is absolutely continuous, the control $u$ is summable and the dynamic is controlled-linear of the form $y'=b(y)u$. For $b\equiv 1$ the above becomes a problem of the calculus of variations. The Lagrangian $Λ(s,y,u)$ is assumed to be either convex in the variable $u$ on every half-line from the origin (radial convexity i…
We study a family of optimal control problems in which one aims at minimizing a cost that mixes a quadratic control penalization and the variance of the system, both for finitely many agents and for the mean-field dynamics as their number goes to infinity. While solutions of the discrete problem always exist in a unique and explicit form, the behavior of their macroscopic counterparts is very sensitive to the magnitude of the time horizon and penalization parameter. When one minimizes the final variance, there always exists a Lipschitz-in-space optimal controls for the infinite dimensional pro…
In this paper, we consider the problem of minimizing the ruin probability of an insurance company in which the surplus process follows the Sparre Andersen model. Similar to Bai et al. \cite{bai2017optimal}, we recast this problem in a Markovian framework by adding another dimension representing the time elapsed since the last claim. After Markovization, We investigate the regularity properties of the value function and state the dynamic programming principle. Furthermore, we show that the value function is the unique constrained viscosity solution to the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equa…
The paper studies a dynamic blocking problem, motivated by a model of optimal fire confinement. While the fire can expand with unit speed in all directions, barriers are constructed in real time. An optimal strategy is sought, minimizing the total value of the burned region, plus a construction cost. It is well known that optimal barriers exists. In general, they are a countable union of compact, connected, rectifiable sets. The main result of the present paper shows that optimal barriers are nowhere dense. The proof relies on new estimates on the reachable sets and on optimal trajectories for…
We study, in a unified way, the following questions related to the properties of Pontryagin extremals for optimal control problems with unrestricted controls: i) How the transformations, which define the equivalence of two problems, transform the extremals? ii) How to obtain quantities which are conserved along any extremal? iii) How to assure that the set of extremals include the minimizers predicted by the existence theory? These questions are connected to: i) the Caratheodory method which establishes a correspondence between the minimizing curves of equivalent problems; ii) the interplay be…
In this paper we study the regularity of the optimal sets for the shape optimization problem \[ \min\Big\{λ_1(Ω)+\dots+λ_k(Ω)\ :\ Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d,\ \text{open}\ ,\ |Ω|=1\Big\}, \] where $λ_1(\cdot),\dots,λ_k(\cdot)$ denote the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian and $|\cdot|$ the $d$-dimensional Lebesgue measure. We prove that the topological boundary of a minimizer $Ω_k^*$ is composed of a relatively open regular part which is locally a graph of a $C^{1,α}$ function and a closed singular part, which is empty if $d<d^*$, contains at most a finite number of isolated points if $d=d^*$ an…
We determine the optimal robust investment strategy of an individual who targets at a given rate of consumption and seeks to minimize the probability of lifetime ruin when she does not have perfect confidence in the drift of the risky asset. Using stochastic control, we characterize the value function as the unique classical solution of an associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation, obtain feedback forms for the optimal investment and drift distortion, and discuss their dependence on various model parameters. In analyzing the HJB equation, we establish the existence and uniqueness of vi…
We reveal an interesting convex duality relationship between two problems: (a) minimizing the probability of lifetime ruin when the rate of consumption is stochastic and when the individual can invest in a Black-Scholes financial market; (b) a controller-and-stopper problem, in which the controller controls the drift and volatility of a process in order to maximize a running reward based on that process, and the stopper chooses the time to stop the running reward and rewards the controller a final amount at that time. Our primary goal is to show that the minimal probability of ruin, whose stoc…
