In this paper, we propose new linearly convergent second-order methods for minimizing convex quartic polynomials. This framework is applied for designing optimization schemes, which can solve general convex problems satisfying a new condition of quartic regularity. It assumes positive definiteness and boundedness of the fourth derivative of the objective function. For such problems, an appropriate quartic regularization of Damped Newton Method has global linear rate of convergence. We discuss several important consequences of this result. In particular, it can be used for constructing new second-order methods in the framework of high-order proximal-point schemes. These methods have convergence rate $\tilde O(k^{-p})$, where $k$ is the iteration counter, $p$ is equal to 3, 4, or 5, and tilde indicates the presence of logarithmic factors in the complexity bounds for the auxiliary problems, which are solved at each iteration of the schemes.
This note focuses on the problem of representing convex sets as projections of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices, in the particular case of sets generated by bivariate polynomials of degree four. Conditions are given for the convex hull of a plane quartic to be exactly semidefinite representable with at most 12 lifting variables. If the quartic is rationally parametrizable, an exact semidefinite representation with 2 lifting variables can be obtained. Various numerical examples illustrate the techniques and suggest further research directions.
We propose faster methods for unconstrained optimization of \emph{structured convex quartics}, which are convex functions of the form \begin{equation*} f(x) = c^\top x + x^\top \mathbf{G} x + \mathbf{T}[x,x,x] + \frac{1}{24} \mathopen\| \mathbf{A} x \mathclose\|_4^4 \end{equation*} for $c \in \mathbb{R}^d$, $\mathbf{G} \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times d}$, $\mathbf{T} \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times d \times d}$, and $\mathbf{A} \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times d}$ such that $\mathbf{A}^\top \mathbf{A} \succ 0$. In particular, we show how to achieve an $ε$-optimal minimizer for such functions with only $O(n^{1/5}\lo…
We show that unless P=NP, there exists no polynomial time (or even pseudo-polynomial time) algorithm that can decide whether a multivariate polynomial of degree four (or higher even degree) is globally convex. This solves a problem that has been open since 1992 when N. Z. Shor asked for the complexity of deciding convexity for quartic polynomials. We also prove that deciding strict convexity, strong convexity, quasiconvexity, and pseudoconvexity of polynomials of even degree four or higher is strongly NP-hard. By contrast, we show that quasiconvexity and pseudoconvexity of odd degree polynomia…
In this paper, we consider the well-known following shape optimization problem: $$λ_2(Ω^*)=\min_{\stackrel{|Ω|=V_0} {Ω\textrm{ convex}}} λ_2(Ω),$$ where $λ_2(\Om)$ denotes the second eigenvalue of the Laplace operator with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in $\Om\subset\R^2$, and $|\Om|$ is the area of $\Om$. We prove, under some technical assumptions, that any optimal shape $Ω^*$ is $\mathcal{C}^{1,\frac{1}{2}}$ and is not $\C^{1,α}$ for any $α>\frac{1}{2}$. We also derive from our strategy some more general regularity results, in the framework of partially overdetermined boundary va…
This work concerns the local convergence theory of Newton and quasi-Newton methods for convex-composite optimization: minimize f(x):=h(c(x)), where h is an infinite-valued proper convex function and c is C^2-smooth. We focus on the case where h is infinite-valued piecewise linear-quadratic and convex. Such problems include nonlinear programming, mini-max optimization, estimation of nonlinear dynamics with non-Gaussian noise as well as many modern approaches to large-scale data analysis and machine learning. Our approach embeds the optimality conditions for convex-composite optimization problem…
For the existence of strong duality in convex optimization regularity conditions play an indisputable role. We mainly deal in this paper with regularity conditions formulated by means of different generalizations of the notion of interior of a set. The primal-dual pair we investigate is a general one expressed in the language of a perturbation function and by employing its Fenchel-Moreau conjugate. After providing an overview on the generalized interior-point conditions that exist in the literature we introduce several new ones formulated by means of the quasi interior and quasi-relative inter…
In this paper we consider the solvability of a non-convex regular polynomial vector optimization problem on a nonempty closed set. We introduce regularity conditions for the polynomial vector optimization problem and study properties and characterizations of the regularity conditions. Under the regularity conditions, we study nonemptiness and boundedness of the solution sets of the problem. As a consequence, we establish two Frank-Wolfe type theorems for the non-convex polynomial vector optimization problem. Finally, we investigate the solution stability of the non-convex regular polynomial ve…
We focus here on the analysis of the regularity or singularity of solutions $\Om_{0}$ to shape optimization problems among convex planar sets, namely: $$ J(\Om_{0})=\min\{J(\Om),\ \Om\ \textrm{convex},\ Ω\in\mathcal S_{ad}\}, $$ where $\mathcal S_{ad}$ is a set of 2-dimensional admissible shapes and $J:\mathcal{S}_{ad}\rightarrow\R$ is a shape functional. Our main goal is to obtain qualitative properties of these optimal shapes by using first and second order optimality conditions, including the infinite dimensional Lagrange multiplier due to the convexity constraint. We prove two types of res…
Let us consider two sequences of closed convex sets $\{A_n\}$ and $\{B_n\}$ converging with respect to the Attouch-Wets convergence to $A$ and $B$, respectively. Given a starting point $a_0$, we consider the sequences of points obtained by projecting on the "perturbed" sets, i.e., the sequences $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}$ defined inductively by $b_n=P_{B_n}(a_{n-1})$ and $a_n=P_{A_n}(b_n)$. Suppose that $A\cap B$ (or a suitable substitute if $A \cap B=\emptyset$) is bounded, we prove that if the couple $(A,B)$ is (boundedly) regular then the couple $(A,B)$ is $d$-stable, i.e., for each $\{a_n\}$ a…
In this paper, we study different kinds of normal properties for infinite system of arbitrarily many convex sets in a Banach space and provide the dual characterization for the normal property in terms of the extended Jamenson property for arbitrarily many weak*-closed convex cones in the dual space. Then, we use the normal property and the extended Jamenson property to study CHIP, strong CHIP and linear regularity for the infinite case of arbitrarily many convex sets and establish equivalent relationship among these properties. In particular, we extend main results in [3] on normal property, …
In this paper, we establish sublinear and linear convergence of fixed point iterations generated by averaged operators in a Hilbert space. Our results are achieved under a bounded Hölder regularity assumption which generalizes the well-known notion of bounded linear regularity. As an application of our results, we provide a convergence rate analysis for Krasnoselskii-Mann iterations, the cyclic projection algorithm, and the Douglas-Rachford feasibility algorithm along with some variants. In the important case in which the underlying sets are convex sets described by convex polynomials in a fin…
Splitting schemes are a class of powerful algorithms that solve complicated monotone inclusion and convex optimization problems that are built from many simpler pieces. They give rise to algorithms in which the simple pieces of the decomposition are processed individually. This leads to easily implementable and highly parallelizable algorithms, which often obtain nearly state-of-the-art performance. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive convergence rate analysis of the Douglas-Rachford splitting (DRS), Peaceman-Rachford splitting (PRS), and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM…
In this paper we introduce the concept of modulus of regularity as a tool to analyze the speed of convergence, including the finite termination, for classes of Fejér monotone sequences which appear in fixed point theory, monotone operator theory, and convex optimization. This concept allows for a unified approach to several notions such as weak sharp minima, error bounds, metric subregularity, Hölder regularity, etc., as well as to obtain rates of convergence for Picard iterates, the Mann algorithm, the proximal point algorithm and the cyclic algorithm. As a byproduct we obtain a quantitative …
We investigate a mean field optimal control problem obtained in the limit of the optimal control of large particle systems with forcing and terminal data which are not assumed to be convex. We prove that the value function, which is known to be Lipschitz continuous but not of class C 1 , in general, without convexity, is actually smooth in an open and dense subset of the space of times and probability measures. As a consequence, we prove a new quantitative propagation of chaos-type result for the optimal solutions of the particle system starting from this open and dense set.
In this paper we extend to $UCW$-hyperbolic spaces the quantitative asymptotic regularity results for the alternating Halpern-Mann iteration obtained by Dinis and the second author for CAT(0) spaces. These results are new even for uniformly convex normed spaces. Furthermore, for a particular choice of the parameter sequences, we compute linear rates of asymptotic regularity in $W$-hyperbolic spaces and quadratic rates of $T$- and $U$-asymptotic regularity in CAT(0) spaces.
We consider the problem of minimizing the bending or elastic energy among Jordan curves confined in a given open set $Ω$. We prove existence, regularity and some structural properties of minimizers. In particular, when $Ω$ is convex we show that a minimizer is necessarily a convex curve. We also provide an example of a minimizer with self-intersections.
The present work investigates the segmentation of textures by formulating it as a strongly convex optimization problem, aiming to favor piecewise constancy of fractal features (local variance and local regularity) widely used to model real-world textures in numerous applications very different in nature. Two objective functions combining these two features are compared, referred to as joint and coupled, promoting either independent or co-localized changes in local variance and regularity. To solve the resulting convex nonsmooth optimization problems, because the processing of large size images…
Illuminating the surface of a convex body with parallel beams of light in a given direction generates a shadow region. We prove sharp regularity results for the boundary of this shadow in every direction of illumination. Moreover, techniques are developed for investigating the regularity of the region generated by orthogonally projecting a convex set onto another. As an application we study the geometry and Hausdorff dimension of the singular set corresponding to a Monge-Ampere equation.
We consider a model convex functional with orthotropic structure and super-quadratic nonstandard growth conditions. We prove that bounded local minimizers are locally Lipschitz, with no restrictions on the ratio between the highest and the lowest growth rate.
In spite of the growing consideration for optimal execution in the financial mathematics literature, numerical approximations of optimal trading curves are almost never discussed. In this article, we present a numerical method to approximate the optimal strategy of a trader willing to unwind a large portfolio. The method we propose is very general as it can be applied to multi-asset portfolios with any form of execution costs, including a bid-ask spread component, even when participation constraints are imposed. Our method, based on convex duality, only requires Hamiltonian functions to have $…
Large sectors of the recent optimization literature focused in the last decade on the development of optimal stochastic first order schemes for constrained convex models under progressively relaxed assumptions. Stochastic proximal point is an iterative scheme born from the adaptation of proximal point algorithm to noisy stochastic optimization, with a resulting iteration related to stochastic alternating projections. Inspired by the scalability of alternating projection methods, we start from the (linear) regularity assumption, typically used in convex feasiblity problems to guarantee the line…
We provide counterexamples to regularity of optimal maps in the classical Monge problem under various assumptions on the initial data. Our construction is based on a variant of the counterexample in \cite{LSW} to Lipschitz regularity of the monotone optimal map between smooth densities supported on convex domains.
