It is shown that every algebra over the chain operad of the little disks operad gives naturally rise to a Hertling-Manin's F-manifold, that is a smooth manifold equipped with an integrable graded commutative associative product on the tangent sheaf. In particular, moduli spaces of extended deformations of complex/symplectic structures are shown to have a canonical structure of F-manifold. With the help of the $G_\infty$-operad a strong homotopy version of the notion of F-manifold is constructed. Among natural examples of $F_\infty$-manifolds one finds formal manifolds associated with the Hochschild cohomology of an associative algebra and with the singular cohomology of an arbitrary compact topological space.
The idea of the work is to find an invariant way to pass from deformation theory to cohomology, which does not use any explicit cocycles. The appropriate cohomology theory is based on considering sheaves on a certain site. An advantage of the approach is that it enables one to give a simultanious treatement to all types of algebras. As an application, we prove the PBW theorem in cases where it is not yet known.
A theorem by Pridham and Lurie provides an equivalence between formal moduli problems and Lie algebras in characteristic zero. In his work, Lurie has distilled the axioms that the algebras appearing in the formal moduli problem need to satisfy, and worked out the case of $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-algebras using an incarnation of the Koszul duality, in the setting of $\infty$-operads. The more recent work of Calaque-Campos-Nuiten extends Lurie's work to obtain an equivalence between formal moduli problem parameterized by a colored operad, and algebras over its Koszul dual operad. This manuscript is b…
In present paper we develop the deformation theory of operads and algebras over operads. Free resolutions (constructed via Boardman-Vogt approach) are used in order to describe formal moduli spaces of deformations. We apply the general theory to the proof of Deligne's conjecture. The latter says that the Hochschild complex of an associative algebra carries a canonical structure of a dg-algebra over the chain operad of the little discs operad. In the course of the proof we construct an operad of geometric nature which acts on the Hochschild complex. It seems to be different from the brace opera…
This paper is a sequel to [LoMa] where moduli spaces of painted stable curves were introduced and studied. We define the extended modular operad of genus zero, algebras over this operad, and study the formal differential geometric structures related to these algebras: pencils of flat connections and Frobenius manifolds without metric. We focus here on the combinatorial aspects of the picture. Algebraic geometric aspects are treated in [Ma2].
The configuration space of $n$ marked points on the complex plane is considered. We investigate a decomposition of this space by so-called Gauss-skizze i.e. a class of graphs being forests, introduced by Gauss. It is proved that this decomposition is a semi-algebraic topological stratification. It also forms a cell decomposition of the configuration space of $n$ marked points. Moreover, we prove that classical tools from deformation theory, ruled by a Maurer--Cartan equation, can be used only locally for Gauss-skizze. We prove that the deformation of the Gauss-skizze is governed by a Hamilton-…
We find a minimal differential graded (dg) operad whose generic representations in $R^n$ are in one-to-one correspondence with formal germs of those endomorphisms of the tangent bundle to $R^n$ which satisfy the Nijenhuis integrability condition. This operad is of a surprisingly simple origin -- it is the cobar construction on the quadratic operad of homologically trivial dg Lie algebras. As a by product we obtain a strong homotopy generalization of this geometric structure and show its homotopy equivalence to the structure of contractible dg manifold.
This paper is a continuation of ``Operads, Grothendieck topologies and deformation theory'' (alg-geom/9502010). We show how to develop a cohomology theory that would control deformations of a sheaf of associative algebras over a scheme by means of introducing an appropriate site and considering sheaves on it.
We review several well-known operads of compactified configuration spaces and construct several new such operads, C, in the category of smooth manifolds with corners whose complexes of fundamental chains give us (i) the 2-coloured operad of A-infinity algebras and their homotopy morphisms, (ii) the 2-coloured operad of L-infinity algebras and their homotopy morphisms, and (iii) the 4-coloured operad of open-closed homotopy algebras and their homotopy morphisms. Two gadgets - a (coloured) operad of Feynman graphs and a de Rham field theory on C - are introduced and used to construct quantized r…
This thesis is concerned with the application of operadic methods, particularly modular operads, to questions arising in the study of moduli spaces of surfaces as well as applications to the study of homotopy algebras and new constructions of 'quantum invariants' of manifolds inspired by ideas originating from physics. We consider the extension of classical 2-dimensional topological quantum field theories to Klein topological quantum field theories which allow unorientable surfaces. We generalise open topological conformal field theories to open Klein topological conformal field theories and c…
A construction of the tangent dg Lie algebra of a sheaf of operad algebras on a site is presented. The requirements on the site are very mild; the requirements on the algebra are more substantial. A few applications including the description of deformatins of a scheme and equivariant deformations are considered. The construction is based upon a model structure on the category of presheaves which should be of an independent interest.
It is shown that for any morphism, i: g --> h, of Lie algebras the vector space underlying the Lie algebra h is canonically a g-homogeneous formal manifold with the action of g being highly nonlinear and twisted by Bernoulli numbers. This fact is obtained from the study of a 2-coloured operad of formal homogeneous spaces and its minimal resolution, and is used to give a new conceptual explanation of both Ziv Ran's Jacobi-Bernoulli complex and Fiorenza-Manetti's L-infinity algebra structure on the mapping cone of a morphism of two Lie algebras. All these constructions are iteratively extended t…
A complete description of the deformation classes of real ruled manifolds is given. In particular, we prove that once the complex deformation class is fixed, the real deformation class is prescribed by the topology of the real structure.
We prove that a weak Fano manifold has unobstructed deformations. For a general variety, we investigate conditions under which a variety is necessarily obstructed.
We study functions on isolated singularities and prove some results of type Milnor number = Tjurina number. We use them to endow the base space of their miniversal deformation with the structure of F-manifold.
It has been shown by Claire Voisin in 2003 that one cannot always deform a compact Kähler manifold into a projective algebraic manifold, thereby answering negatively a question raised by Kodaira. In this article, we prove that under an additional semipositivity or seminegativity condition on the canonical bundle, the answer becomes positive, namely such a compact Kähler manifold can be approximated by deformations of projective manifolds.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, $\CO$ be a dg operad over $k$ and let $A$ be an $\CO$-algebra. In this note we define formal deformations of $A$, construct the deformation functor $$\Def_A:\dgar(k)\to\simpl$$ from the category of artinian local dg algebras to the category of simplicial sets. In the case $\CO$ and $A$ are non-positively graded, we prove that $\Def_A$ is governed by the tangent Lie algebra $T_A$ (defined as derivations of a cofibrant resolution of $A$). A very easy example shows that the result does not hold without this condition.
Quiver varieties have recently appeared in various different areas of Mathematics such as representation theory of Kac-Moody algebras and quantum groups, instantons on 4-manifolds, and resolutions Kleinian singularities. In this paper, we show that many important affine quiver varieties, e.g., the Calogero-Moser space, can be imbedded as coadjoint orbits in the dual of an appropriate infinite dimensional Lie algebra. In particular, there is an infinitesimally transitive action of the Lie algebra in question on the quiver variety. Our construction is based on an extension of Kontsevich's formal…
This is the first of two papers in which we prove that a cell model of the moduli space of curves with marked points and tangent vectors at the marked points acts on the Hochschild co--chains of a Frobenius algebra. We also prove that a there is dg--PROP action of a version of Sullivan Chord diagrams which acts on the normalized Hochschild co-chains of a Frobenius algebra. These actions lift to operadic correlation functions on the co--cycles. In particular, the PROP action gives an action on the homology of a loop space of a compact simply--connected manifold. In this first part, we set up th…
The purpose of this paper is to explain and to generalize, in a homotopical way, the result of Barannikov-Kontsevich and Manin which states that the underlying homology groups of some Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras carry a Frobenius manifold structure. To this extent, we first make the minimal model for the operad encoding BV-algebras explicit. Then we prove a homotopy transfer theorem for the associated notion of homotopy BV-algebra. The final result provides an extension of the action of the homology of the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen moduli space of genus 0 curves on the homology of some BV-algebr…
In this thesis, we study deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson manifolds and algebraic Poisson schemes in the framework of Kodaira-Spencer's analytic deformation theory and Grothendieck's algebraic deformation theory.
We prove several formulas related to Hodge theory and the Kodaira-Spencer-Kuranishi deformation theory of Kähler manifolds. As applications, we present a construction of globally convergent power series of integrable Beltrami differentials on Calabi-Yau manifolds and also a construction of global canonical family of holomorphic $(n,0)$-forms on the deformation spaces of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Similar constructions are also applied to the deformation spaces of compact Kähler manifolds.
We investigate when the tangent bundle of a projective manifold has a non-trivial first order (or positive-dimensional) deformation. This leads to a new conjectural characterization of the complex projective space.
The aim of this note is to investigate characterizations and deformations of elliptic Calabi--Yau manifolds, building on earlier works of Wilson and Oguiso. Version 2: References updated and small changes. Version 3: Smoothness conditions removed from several theorems, plus some reorganization. Version 4: Several references added.
A new proof of the assertion, that any global kaehler deformation of a flag manifold F with b2=1 is biholomorphic to F. Essential use is made of rational connected properties of F
An unobstructedness theorem is proved for deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson manifolds and applied to a class of examples. These include certain rational surfaces and Hilbert schemes of points on Poisson surfaces. We study in particular the Hilbert schemes of the projective plane and show that a generic deformation is determined by two parameters -- an elliptic curve and a translation on it.
This is a continuation of part I in the series of the papers on Lagrangian Floer theory on toric manifolds. Using the deformations of Floer cohomology by the ambient cycles, which we call bulk deformations, we find a continuum of non-displaceable Lagrangian fibers on some compact toric manifolds. We also provide a method of finding all fibers with non-vanishing Floer cohomology with bulk deformations in arbitrary compact toric manifolds, which we call bulk-balanced Lagrangian fibers.
The main result of this paper is to study the local deformations of Calabi-Yau $\partial\bar{\partial}$-manifold that are co-polarised by the Gauduchon metric by considering the subfamily of co-polarised fibres by the class of Aeppli/De Rham-Gauduchon cohomology of Gauduchon metric given at the beginning on the central fibre. In the latter part, we prove that the $p$-SKT $h$-$\partial\bar{\partial}$-property is deformation open by constructing and studying a new notion called $hp$-Hermitian symplectic ($hp$-HS) form.
This is the second of two papers in which we prove that a cell model of the moduli space of curves with marked points and tangent vectors at the marked points acts on the Hochschild co--chains of a Frobenius algebra. In this second part, we discret…
We consider Lagrangian-like submanifolds in certain even-dimensional 'symplectic-like' Poisson manifolds. We show, under suitable transversality hypotheses, that the pair consisting of the ambient Poisson manifold and the submanifold has unobstructed deformations and that the deformations automatically preserve the Lagrangian-like property.
We prove unobstructed deformations for compact Kaehlerian even-dimensional Poisson manifolds whose Poisson tensor degenerates along a divisor with mild singularities. Examples include Hilbert schemes of del Pezzo surfaces.
In this paper, we provide a conceptual new construction of the algebraic structure on the pair of the Hochschild cohomology spectrum (cochain complex) and Hochschild homology spectrum, which is analogous to the structure of calculus on a manifold. This algebraic structure is encoded by a two-colored operad introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman. We prove that for a stable idempotent-complete infinity-category, the pair of its Hochschild cohomology and homology spectra naturally admits the structure of algebra over the operad. Moreover, we prove a generalization to the equivariant context.
We introduce and study several new topological operads that should be regarded as nonsymmetric analogues of the operads of little 2-disks, framed little 2-disks, and Deligne-Mumford compactifications of moduli spaces of genus zero curves with marked points. These operads exhibit all the remarkable algebraic and geometric features that their classical analogues possess; in particular, it is possible to define a noncommutative analogue of the notion of cohomological field theory with similar Givental-type symmetries. This relies on rich geometry of the analogues of the Deligne-Mumford spaces, co…
