We develop the deformation theory of cohomological field theories (CohFTs), which is done as a special case of a general deformation theory of morphisms of modular operads. This leads us to introduce two new natural extensions of the notion of a CohFT: homotopical (necessary to structure chain-level Gromov--Witten invariants) and quantum (with examples found in the works of Buryak--Rossi on integrable systems). We introduce a new version of Kontsevich's graph complex, enriched with tautological classes on the moduli spaces of stable curves. We use it to study a new universal deformation group which acts naturally on the moduli spaces of quantum homotopy CohFTs, by methods due to Merkulov--Willwacher. This group is shown to contain both the prounipotent Grothendieck--Teichmüller group and the Givental group.
We introduce the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ group action on a partition function of a Cohomological field theory via the certain Givental's action. Restricted to the small phase space we describe the action via the explicit formulae on a CohFT genus $g$ potential. We prove that applied to the total ancestor potential of a simple elliptic singularity the action introduced coincides with the transformation of Milanov--Ruan changing the primitive form (cf. arXiv:1106.2321).
This paper is an outcome of the author's master thesis written under the supervision of Aldo Conca. We prove some results relating connectedness properties with (local) cohomological dimension. As an interesting corollary we have that every initial complex of a Cohen-Macaulay ideal is strongly connected.
We generalise a result of Kazarian regarding Kadomtsev-Petviashvili integrability for single Hodge integrals to general cohomological field theories related to Hurwitz-type counting problems or hypergeometric tau-functions. The proof uses recent results on the relations between hypergeometric tau-functions and topological recursion, as well as the Eynard-DOSS correspondence between topological recursion and cohomological field theories. In particular, we recover the result of Alexandrov of KP integrability for triple Hodge integrals with a Calabi-Yau condition.
We construct some extension ({\it Stable Field Theory}) of Cohomological Field Theory. The Stable Field Theory is a system of homomorphisms to some vector spaces generated by spheres and disks with punctures. It is described by a formal tensor series, satisfying to some system of "differential equations". In points of convergence the tensor series generate special noncommutative analogues of Frobenius algebras, describing 'Open-Closed' Topological Field Theories.
We prove that for every compact Kähler manifold $X$ there exists an $L$-infinity morphism, lifting the usual cup product in cohomology, from the Kodaira-Spencer differential graded Lie algebra to the suspension of the space of linear endomorphisms of the singular cohomology of $X$. As a consequence we get an algebraic proof of the principle ``obstructions to deformations of compact Kaehler manifolds annihilate ambient cohomology''.
We introduce and study several new topological operads that should be regarded as nonsymmetric analogues of the operads of little 2-disks, framed little 2-disks, and Deligne-Mumford compactifications of moduli spaces of genus zero curves with marked points. These operads exhibit all the remarkable algebraic and geometric features that their classical analogues possess; in particular, it is possible to define a noncommutative analogue of the notion of cohomological field theory with similar Givental-type symmetries. This relies on rich geometry of the analogues of the Deligne-Mumford spaces, co…
A method of constructing Cohomological Field Theories (CohFTs) with unit using minimal classes on the moduli spaces of curves is developed. As a simple consequence, CohFTs with unit are found which take values outside of the tautological cohomology of the moduli spaces of curves. A study of minimal classes in low genus is presented in the Appendix by D. Petersen.
In his 2011 paper, Teleman proved that a cohomological field theory on the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of stable complex curves is uniquely determined by its restriction to the smooth part $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, provided that the underlying Frobenius algebra is semisimple. This leads to a classification of all semisimple cohomological field theories. The present paper, the outcome of the author's master's thesis, presents Teleman's proof following his original paper. The author claims no originality: the main motivation has been to keep the exposition as complete and self-contain…
We obtain a simple, recursive presentation of the tautological (κ, ψ, and λ) classes on the moduli space of curves in genus zero and one in terms of boundary strata (graphs). We derive differential equations for the generating functions for their intersection numbers which allow us to prove a simple relationship between the genus zero and genus one potentials. As an application, we describe the moduli space of normalized, even, rank one cohomological field theories in genus one in coordinates which are additive under taking tensor products. Our results simplify and generalize those of Kaufmann…

We use the explicit relation between genus filtrated $s$-loop means of the Gaussian matrix model and terms of the genus expansion of the Kontsevich--Penner matrix model (KPMM), which is the generating function for volumes of discretized (open) moduli spaces $M_{g,s}^{disc}$ (discrete volumes), to express Gaussian means in all genera as polynomials in special times weighted by ancestor invariants of an underlying cohomological field theory. We translate topological recursion of the Gaussian model into recurrent relations for coefficients of this expansion proving their integrality and positivit…
We construct GLSM invariants for a general choice of stability in both the narrow and broad sector cases and prove they form a Cohomological Field Theory. This is obtained by forming the analogue of a virtual fundamental class which lives in the local cohomology of the twisted Hodge complex. This general construction comes from the use of two new ingredients. First, the use of the Thom-Sullivan and Godement resolutions applied to matrix factorizations are introduced to handle poorly behaved (non-separated) moduli spaces. Second, a localized Chern character map built from the Atiyah class of a …
In the present article we discuss different approaches to cohomological invariants of algebraic groups over a field. We focus on the Tits algebras and on the Rost invariant and relate them to the Morava K-theory. Furthermore, we discuss oriented cohomology theories of affine varieties and the Rost motives for different cohomology theories in the sense of Levine-Morel.
For any finite group G we define the moduli space of pointed admissible G-covers and the concept of a G-equivariant cohomological field theory (G-CohFT), which, when G is the trivial group, reduce to the moduli space of stable curves and a cohomological field theory (CohFT), respectively. We prove that by taking the "quotient" by G, a G-CohFT reduces to a CohFT. We also prove that a G-CohFT contains a G-Frobenius algebra, a G-equivariant generalization of a Frobenius algebra, and that the "quotient" by G agrees with the obvious Frobenius algebra structure on the space of G-invariants, after re…
We show that the generating function for the higher Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli spaces of stable curves with marked points can be obtained from Witten's free energy by a change of variables given by Schur polynomials. Since this generating function has a natural extension to the moduli space of invertible Cohomological Field Theories, this suggests the existence of a ``very large phase space'', correlation functions on which include Hodge integrals studied by C. Faber and R. Pandharipande. From this formula we derive an asymptotical expression for the Weil-Petersson volume as conjectu…
We give a purely algebraic construction of a cohomological field theory associated with a quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularity W and a subgroup G of the diagonal group of symmetries of W. This theory can be viewed as an analogue of the Gromov-Witten theory for an orbifoldized Landau-Ginzburg model for W/G. The main geometric ingredient for our construction is provided by the moduli of curves with W-structures introduced by Fan, Jarvis and Ruan. We construct certain matrix factorizations on the products of these moduli stacks with affine spaces which play a role similar to that of…
We prove combinatorially the explicit relation between genus filtrated $s$-loop means of the Gaussian matrix model and terms of the genus expansion of the Kontsevich--Penner matrix model (KPMM). The latter is the generating function for volumes of discretized (open) moduli spaces $M_{g,s}^{\mathrm{disc}}$ given by $N_{g,s}(P_1,\dots,P_s)$ for $(P_1,\dots,P_s)\in{\mathbb Z}_+^s$. This generating function therefore enjoys the topological recursion, and we prove that it is simultaneously the generating function for ancestor invariants of a cohomological field theory thus enjoying the Givental dec…
In this paper, we generalize the Givental theory for Frobenius manifolds and cohomological field theories to flat F-manifolds and F-cohomological field theories. In particular, we define a notion of Givental cone for flat F-manifolds, and we provide a generalization of the Givental group as a matrix loop group acting on them. We show that this action is transitive on semisimple flat F-manifolds. We then extend this action to F-cohomological field theories in all genera. We show that, given a semisimple flat F-manifold and a Givental group element connecting it to the constant flat F-manifold a…
In this paper, we study a deformation theory of rigid analytic spaces. We develop a theory of cotangent complexes for rigid geometry which fits in with our deformations. We then use the complexes to give a cohomological description of infinitesimal deformation of rigid analytic spaces. Moreover, we will prove an existence of a formal versal family for a proper rigid analytic space.
We study the behaviour of infinitesimal deformation functors of local group actions with regard to passing to subgroups and quotient groups. Inspired by the cohomological information, we conjecture the existence of a decomposition of a deformation functor of a local $G$-action as a smooth extension of a fibered product of functors related to a subgroup and a quotient group of $G$.
Using Bloch-Ogus theorem and Chern character from K-theory to cyclic homology, we answer a question of Green and Griffiths on extending Bloch formula. Moreover, we construct a map from local Hilbert functor to local cohomology. With suitable assumptions, we use this map to answer a question of Bloch on constructing a natural transformation from local Hilbert functor to cohomological Chow groups.
The cohomology groups of line bundles over complex tori (or abelian varieties) are classically studied invariants of these spaces. In this article, we compute the cohomology groups of line bundles over various holomorphic, non-commutative deformations of complex tori. Our analysis interpolates between two extreme cases. The first case is a calculation of the space of (cohomological) theta functions for line bundles over constant, commutative deformations. The second case is a calculation of the cohomologies of non-commutative deformations of degree-zero line bundles.
Donaldson-Thomas theory on a Calabi-Yau can be described in terms of a certain six-dimensional cohomological gauge theory. We introduce a certain class of defects in this gauge theory which generalize surface defects in four dimensions. These defects are associated with divisors and are defined by prescribing certain boundary conditions for the gauge fields. We discuss generalized instanton moduli spaces when the theory is defined with a defect and propose a generalization of Donaldson-Thomas invariants. These invariants arise by studying torsion free coherent sheaves on Calabi-Yau varieties w…
In this paper, we initiate the study of the Givental group action on Cohomological Field Theories in terms of homotopical algebra. More precisely, we show that the stabilisers of Topological Field Theories in genus 0 (respectively in genera 0 and 1) are in one-to-one correspondence with commutative homotopy Batalin--Vilkovisky algebras (respectively wheeled commutative homotopy BV-algebras).
Cohomological field theories (CohFTs) were defined in the mid 1990s by Kontsevich and Manin to capture the formal properties of the virtual fundamental class in Gromov-Witten theory. A beautiful classification result for semisimple CohFTs (via the action of the Givental group) was proven by Teleman in 2012. The Givental-Teleman classification can be used to explicitly calculate the full CohFT in many interesting cases not approachable by earlier methods. My goal here is to present an introduction to these ideas together with a survey of the calculations of the CohFTs obtained from Witten's cla…
We study the relation between Donaldson-Thomas theory of Calabi-Yau threefolds and a six-dimensional topological Yang-Mills theory. Our main example is the topological U(N) gauge theory on flat space in its Coulomb branch. To evaluate its partition function we use equivariant localization techniques on its noncommutative deformation. As a result the gauge theory localizes on noncommutative instantons which can be classified in terms of N-coloured three-dimensional Young diagrams. We give to these noncommutative instantons a geometrical description in terms of certain stable framed coherent she…
We review new aspects of integrable systems discovered recently in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories and their topologically twisted versions. The main topics are (i) an explicit construction of Whitham deformations of the Seiberg-Witten curves for classical gauge groups, (ii) its application to contact terms in the u-plane integral of topologically twisted theories, and (iii) a connection between the tau functions and the blowup formula in topologically twisted theories.
