This paper is a sequel to [LoMa] where moduli spaces of painted stable curves were introduced and studied. We define the extended modular operad of genus zero, algebras over this operad, and study the formal differential geometric structures related to these algebras: pencils of flat connections and Frobenius manifolds without metric. We focus here on the combinatorial aspects of the picture. Algebraic geometric aspects are treated in [Ma2].
In this article combining survey and certain research results, we introduce a categorical framework for description of symmetries of genus zero modular operad. This description merges the techniques of recent "persistence homology" studies and the classical formalism of groupoids. We show that the contravariant "poset in groupoids" embodying these symmetries, provides a new avatar of profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group acting upon this operad but seemingly not related with representations of the Galois group of all algebraic numbers.
The modular envelope of a cyclic operad is the smallest modular operad containing it. A modular operad is constructed from moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with boundary; this modular operad is shown to be the modular envelope of the A-infinity cyclic operad. This gives a new proof of the result of Harer-Mumford-Thurston-Penner-Kontsevich that a cell complex built from ribbon graphs is homotopy equivalent to the moduli space of curves.
In this article, we develop the geometry of canonical stratifications of the spaces $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ and prepare ground for studying the action of the Galois group $Gal (\overline{\mathbb{Q}} /\mathbb{Q})$ upon strata. We define and introduce a version of a gravity operad constructed for a class of moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$, equipped with a hidden holomorphic involution. This additional symmetry is associated to a split quaternionic structure. We introduce a categorical framework to present this object. Interaction between the geometry, physics and the arithmetics are discussed. An …
The semi-classical approximation is an explicit formula of mathematical physics for the sum of Feynman diagrams with a single circuit. In this paper, we study the same problem in the setting of modular operads (see dg-ga/9408003); instead of being a number, the interaction at a vertex of valence n is an S_n-module. As an application, we calculate the S_n-equivariant Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces \Mbar_{1,n}.
Modular operads are a special type of operad: in fact, they bear the same relationship to operads that graphs do to trees (i.e. simply connected graphs). One of the basic examples of a modular operad is the collection of Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen moduli spaces $\bar{M}_{g,n}$ of stable pointed algebraic curves; hence the word ``modular.'' In this paper, we introduce various constructions on differential graded modular operads, notably a duality which we call the Feynman transform, which extends Kontsevich's graph complexes. Our main result is the calculation of the Euler characteristic of the Fe…
This is a copy of the article published in IMRN (2007). I describe the noncommutative Batalin-Vilkovisky geometry associated naturally with arbitrary modular operad. The classical limit of this geometry is the noncommutative symplectic geometry of the corresponding tree-level cyclic operad. I show, in particular, that the algebras over the Feynman transform of a twisted modular operad P are in one-to-one correspondence with solutions to quantum master equation of Batalin-Vilkovisky geometry on the affine P-manifolds. As an application I give a construction of characteristic classes with values…
Let overline{M}_{g,n} be the moduli space of stable algebraic curves of genus g with n marked points. With the operations which relate the different moduli spaces identifying marked points, the family (overline{M}_{g,n})_{g,n} is a modular operad of projective smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks, overline{M}. In this paper we prove that the modular operad of singular chains C_*(overline{M};Q) is formal; so it is weakly equivalent to the modular operad of its homology H_*(overline{M};Q). As a consequence, the "up to homotopy" algebras of these two operads are the same. To obtain this result we prove …
We introduce and study the notion of a dual Feynman transform of a modular operad. This generalizes and gives a conceptual explanation of Kontsevich's dual construction producing graph cohomology classes from a contractible differential graded Frobenius algebra. The dual Feynman transform of a modular operad is indeed linear dual to the Feynman transform introduced by Getzler and Kapranov when evaluated on vacuum graphs. In marked contrast to the Feynman transform, the dual notion admits an extremely simple presentation via generators and relations; this leads to an explicit and easy descripti…
A part of Grothendieck's program for studying the Galois group $G_{\mathbb Q}$ of the field of all algebraic numbers $\overline{\mathbb Q}$ emerged from his insight that one should lift its action upon $\overline{\mathbb Q}$ to the action of $G_{\mathbb Q}$ upon the (appropriately defined) profinite completion of $π_1({\mathbb P}^1 \setminus \{0,1, \infty\})$. The latter admits a good combinatorial encoding via finite graphs "dessins d'enfant". This part was actively developing during the last decades, starting with foundational works of A. Belyi, V. Drinfeld and Y. Ihara. Our brief note conce…
In this paper we answer a question raised in [25], Sec. 4, by showing that the genus zero moduli operad $\{\bar{M}_{0,n+1}\}$ can be endowed with natural descent data that allow it to be considered as the lift to ${\rm Spec}\,\Z$ of an operad over $\F_1$. The relevant descent data are based on a notion of constructible sets and constructible functions over $\F_1$, which describes suitable differences of torifications with a positivity condition on the class in the Grothendieck ring. More generally, we do the same for the operads $\{T_{d,n+1}\}$ (whose components were) introduced in [5]. Finall…
We describe the modular operad structure on the moduli spaces of pointed stable curves equipped with an admissible $G$-cover. To do this we are forced to introduce the notion of an operad colored not by a set but by the objects of a category. This construction interpolates in a sense between `framed' and `colored' versions of operads; we hope that it will be of independent interest. An algebra over this operad is the same thing as a $G$-equivariant CohFT, as defined by Jarvis, Kaufmann and Kimura. We prove that the (orbifold) Gromov--Witten invariants of global quotients $[X/G]$ give examples …
It is shown that every algebra over the chain operad of the little disks operad gives naturally rise to a Hertling-Manin's F-manifold, that is a smooth manifold equipped with an integrable graded commutative associative product on the tangent sheaf. In particular, moduli spaces of extended deformations of complex/symplectic structures are shown to have a canonical structure of F-manifold. With the help of the $G_\infty$-operad a strong homotopy version of the notion of F-manifold is constructed. Among natural examples of $F_\infty$-manifolds one finds formal manifolds associated with the Hochs…
We consider the extension of classical 2-dimensional topological quantum field theories to Klein topological quantum field theories which allow unorientable surfaces. We approach this using the theory of modular operads by introducing a new operad governing associative algebras with involution. This operad is Koszul and we identify the dual dg operad governing A-infinity algebras with involution in terms of Mobius graphs which are a generalisation of ribbon graphs. We then generalise open topological conformal field theories to open Klein topological conformal field theories and give a generat…
These are expanded lecture notes from lectures given at the Workshop on higher structures at MATRIX Melbourne. These notes give an introduction to Feynman categories and their applications. Feynman categories give a universal categorical way to encode operations and relations. This includes the aspects of operad--like theories such as PROPs, modular operads, twisted (modular) operads, properads, hyperoperads and their colored versions. There is more depth to the general theory as it applies as well to algebras over operads and an abundance of other related structures, such as crossed simplicia…
In this paper we give a new foundational, categorical formulation for operations and relations and objects parameterizing them. This generalizes and unifies the theory of operads and all their cousins including but not limited to PROPs, modular operads, twisted (modular) operads, properads, hyperoperads, their colored versions, as well as algebras over operads and an abundance of other related structures, such as crossed simplicial groups, the augmented simplicial category or FI--modules. The usefulness of this approach is that it allows us to handle all the classical as well as more esoteric …
This thesis is concerned with the application of operadic methods, particularly modular operads, to questions arising in the study of moduli spaces of surfaces as well as applications to the study of homotopy algebras and new constructions of 'quantum invariants' of manifolds inspired by ideas originating from physics. We consider the extension of classical 2-dimensional topological quantum field theories to Klein topological quantum field theories which allow unorientable surfaces. We generalise open topological conformal field theories to open Klein topological conformal field theories and c…
It is shown that for any morphism, i: g --> h, of Lie algebras the vector space underlying the Lie algebra h is canonically a g-homogeneous formal manifold with the action of g being highly nonlinear and twisted by Bernoulli numbers. This fact is obtained from the study of a 2-coloured operad of formal homogeneous spaces and its minimal resolution, and is used to give a new conceptual explanation of both Ziv Ran's Jacobi-Bernoulli complex and Fiorenza-Manetti's L-infinity algebra structure on the mapping cone of a morphism of two Lie algebras. All these constructions are iteratively extended t…
In this paper I introduce modular symbols for Maass wave cusp forms. They appear in the guise of finitely additive functions on the Boolean algebra generated by intervals with non--positive rational ends, with values in analytic functions (pseudo--measures in the sense of [MaMar2]). After explaining the basic issues and analogies in the extended Introduction, I construct modular symbols in the sec. 1 and the related Lévy--Mellin transforms in the sec. 2. The whole paper is an extended footnote to the Lewis--Zagier fundamental study [LZ2].
