We define a complete Riemannian manifold X to be large-scale conformally rigid if all groups that are quasi-isometric to some complete Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry conformal to X are quasi-isometric to X. We prove that many 3-manifolds, including Euclidean 3-space, hyperbolic 3-space and the product of the hyperbolic plane with the real line are large-scale conformally rigid. This implies new characterizations of groups that can act properly, cocompactly by isometries on those manifolds.
The classical Liouville Theorem on conformal transformations determines local conformal transformations on the Euclidean space of dimension $\geq 3$. Its natural adaptation to the general framework of Riemannian structures is the 2-rigidity of conformal transformations, that is such a transformation is fully determined by its 2-jet at any point. We prove here a similar rigidity for generalized conformal structures defined by giving a one parameter family of metrics (instead of scalar multiples of a given one) on each tangent space.
In this paper we prove that under a lower bound on the Ricci curvature and an asymptotic assumption on the scalar curvature, a complete conformally compact manifold $(M^{n+1},g)$, with a pole $p$ and with the conformal infinity in the conformal class of the round sphere, has to be the hyperbolic space.
In this paper, we consider the problem of building a conformal boundary, embedding a pseudo-Riamnnian manifold as an open subset of a bigger one. We get first results about conformal maximality. We also show that in dimension $\geq 3$, there are rigidity properties for the topological boundary of such a conformal embedding. We get results of the same kind about general Cartan geometries.
In this paper we show a quantitative rigidity result for the minimizer of the Willmore functional among all projective planes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\ge 4$. We also construct an explicit counterexample to a corresponding rigidity result in codimension one, by showing that an Enneper surface might split-off during a blow-up process. For conformal immersions of spheres with large enough Willmore energies, we construct explicit counterexamples to a quantitative rigidity result and this complements the recently obtained rigidity results in [LaNg13].
In this paper, we give an optimal inequality relating the relative Yamabe invariant of a certain compactification of a conformally compact Poin-car{é}-Einstein manifold with the Yamabe invariant of its boundary at infinity. As an application, we obtain an elementary proof of the rigidity of the hyper-bolic space as the only conformally compact Poincar{é}-Einstein manifold with the round sphere as its conformal infinity.
Let M be a compact manifold with boundary. In this paper, we discuss some rigidity theorems of metrics in a same conformal class that fixes the boundary and satisfy certain integral conditions on the the scalar curvatures and the mean curvatures on the boundary. No condition on the first eigenvalues of operators is need.
Inspired by the work of F. Hang and X. Wang and partial results by S. Raulot, we prove a scalar curvature rigitidy result for locally conformally flat manifolds with boundary in the spirit of the well-known Min-Oo conjecture.
In this paper we prove several quantitative rigidity results for conformal immersions of surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with bounded total curvature. We show that (branched) conformal immersions which are close in energy to either a round sphere, a conformal Clifford torus, an inverted catenoid, an inverted Enneper's minimal surface or an inverted Chen's minimal graph must be close to these surfaces in the $W^{2,2}$-norm. Moreover, we apply these results to prove a corresponding rigidity result for complete, connected and non-compact surfaces.
We show rigidity of the first conformal Steklov eigenvalue on annuli and Möbius bands. The proof relies, among others, on uniqueness results due to Fraser--Schoen, a compactness theorem of the second named author, and recent work of the authors on asymptotic control of Steklov eigenvalues in glueing constructions.
Let $(M, \bar g)$ be an $n$-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we considers the following conformal scalar curvature rigidity problem: Given a compact smooth domain $Ω$ with $\partial Ω$, can one find a conformal metric $g$ whose scalar curvature $R[g]\ge R[\bar g]$ on $Ω$ and the mean curvature $H[g] \ge H[ \bar g]$ on $\partial Ω$ with $\bar g = g$ on $\partial Ω$? We prove that $\bar g = g$ on some smooth domains in a general Riemannian manifold, which is an extension of the previous results given by Qing and Yuan, and Hang and Wang.
Moitvated in part by [3], in this note we obtain a rigidity result for globally hyperbolic vacuum spacetimes in arbitrary dimension that admit a timelike conformal Killing vector field. Specifically, we show that if M is a Ricci flat, timelike geodesically complete spacetime with compact Cauchy surfaces that admits a timelike conformal Killing field X, then M must split as a metric product, and X must be Killing. This gives a partial proof of the Bartnik splitting conjecture in the vacuum setting.
For a hypersurface V of a conformal space, we introduce a conformal differential invariant I = h^2/g, where g and h are the first and the second fundamental forms of V connected by the apolarity condition. This invariant is called the conformal quadratic element of V. The solution of the problem of conformal rigidity is presented in the framework of conformal differential geometry and connected with the conformal quadratic element of V. The main theorem states: Let n \geq 4 and V and V' be two nonisotropic hypersurfaces without umbilical points in a conformal space C^n or a pseudoconformal spa…
We show that a conformal connection on a closed oriented surface $Σ$ of negative Euler characteristic preserves precisely one conformal structure and is furthermore uniquely determined by its unparametrised geodesics. As a corollary it follows that the unparametrised geodesics of a Riemannian metric on $Σ$ determine the metric up to constant rescaling. It is also shown that every conformal connection on the $2$-sphere lies in a complex $5$-manifold of conformal connections, all of which share the same unparametrised geodesics.
In this paper we prove that a conformally compact Einstein manifold with the round sphere as its conformal infinity has to be the hyperbolic space. We do not assume the manifolds to be spin, but our approach relies on the positive mass theorem for asymptotic flat manifolds. The proof is based on understanding of positive eigenfunctions and compactifications obtained by positive eigenfunctions.
Geometry of conformal minimal two-spheres immersed in $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$ is studied in this paper by harmonic maps. We construct a non-homogeneous constant curved minimal two-sphere in $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$, and give a classification theorem of linearly full conformal minimal immersions of constant curvature from $S^2$ to $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$, or equivalently, a complex hyperquadric $Q_{4}$, which illustrates minimal two-spheres of constant curvature in $Q_{4}$ are in general not congruent.
In the article we introduce new conformal and smooth invariants on compact, oriented four-manifolds with boundary. In the first part, we show that "positivity" conditions on these invariants will impose topological restrictions on underlying manifolds with boundary, which generalizes the results on closed four-manifolds by M. Gursky and on conformally compact Einstein four-manifolds by S.-Y. A. Chang, J. Qing, and P. Yang. In the second part, we study Weyl functional on four-manifolds with boundary and establish several conformally invariant rigidity theorems. As applications, we prove some ri…
Symmetry algebras of Killing vector fields and conformal Killing vectors fields can be extended to Killing-Yano and conformal Killing-Yano superalgebras in constant curvature manifolds. By defining $\mathbb{Z}$-gradations and filtrations of these superalgebras, we show that the second cohomology groups of them are trivial and they cannot be deformed to other Lie superalgebras. This shows the rigidity of Killing-Yano and conformal Killing-Yano superalgebras and reveals the fact that they correspond to geometric invariants of constant curvature manifolds. We discuss the structures and dimensions…
In this paper, we study conformally flat hypersurfaces of dimension $n(\geq 4)$ in $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ using the framework of Möbius geometry. First, we classify and explicitly express the conformally flat hypersurfaces of dimension $n(\geq 4)$ with constant Möbius scalar curvature under the Möbius transformation group of $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$. Second, we prove that if the conformally flat hypersurface with constant Möbius scalar curvature $R$ is compact, then $$R=(n-1)(n-2)r^2, ~~0<r<1,$$ and the compact conformally flat hypersurface is Möbius equivalent to the torus $$\mathbb{ S}^1(\sqrt{1-r^2})…
In this paper, for an immersion $f$ of an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ into $(n+d)$-Euclidean space we give a sufficient condition on $f$ so that, in case $d\leq 5$, any immersion $g$ of $M$ into $(n+d+1)$-Euclidean space that induces on $M$ a metric that is conformal to the metric induced by $f$ is locally obtained, in a dense subset of $M$, by a composition of $f$ and a conformal immersion from an open subset of $(n+d)$-Euclidean space into an open subset of $(n+d+1)$-Euclidean space. Our result extends a theorem for hypersurfaces due to M. Dajczer and E. Vergasta. The restriction…
In the paper, we consider the rigidity problem of the infinite hexagonal triangulation of the plane under the piecewise linear conformal changes introduced by Luo in [5]. Our result shows that if a geometric hexagonal triangulation of the plane is PL conformal to the regular hexagonal triangulation and all inner angles are in $[δ, π/2 -δ]$ for any constant $δ> 0$, then it is the regular hexagonal triangulation. This partially solves a conjecture of Luo [4]. The proof uses the concept of \emph{quasi-harmonic} functions to unfold the properties of the mesh.
In this paper we investigate the nature of stationary points of functionals on the space of Riemannian metrics on a smooth compact manifold. Special cases are spectral invariants associated with Laplace or Dirac operators such as functional determinants, and the total Q-curvature. When the functional is invariant under conformal changes of the metric, and the manifold is the standard n-sphere, we apply methods from representation theory to give a universal form of the Hessian of the functional at a stationary point. This reveals a very strong rigidity in the local structure of any such functio…

In this article, we study local holomorphic isometric embeddings from ${\BB}^n$ into ${\BB}^{N_1}\times... \times{\BB}^{N_m}$ with respect to the normalized Bergman metrics up to conformal factors. Assume that each conformal factor is smooth Nash algebraic. Then each component of the map is a multi-valued holomorphic map between complex Euclidean spaces by the algebraic extension theorem derived along the lines of Mok and Mok-Ng. Applying holomorphic continuation and analyzing real analytic subvarieties carefully, we show that each component is either a constant map or a proper holomorphic map…
In this paper we study the rigidity of infinite volume 3-manifolds with sectional curvature $-b^2\le K\le -1$ and finitely generated fundamental group. In-particular, we generalize the Sullivan's quasi-conformal rigidity for finitely generated fundamental group with empty dissipative set to negative variable curvature 3-manifolds. We also generalize the rigidity of Hamenstädt or more recently Besson-Courtois-Gallot, to 3-manifolds with infinite volume and geometrically infinite fundamental group.
Finsleroid-Finsler metrics form an important class of singular (y-local) Finsler metrics. They were introduced by G. S. Asanov [2] in 2006. As the special case of the general construction Asanov produced singular (y - local) examples of Landsberg spaces of dimension at least three that are not of Berwald type. The existence of regular (y - global) Landsberg metrics that are not of Berwald type is an open problem up to this day; for a detailed exposition of the so-called unicorn problem in Finsler geometry see D. Bao [3]. In this paper we are going to characterize the Finsleroid-Finsler metrics…
The null curvature condition (NCC) is the requirement that the Ricci curvature of a Lorentzian manifold be nonnegative along null directions, which ensures the focusing of null geodesic congruences. In this note, we show that the NCC together with the causal structure significantly constrain the metric. In particular, we prove that any conformal rescaling of a vacuum spacetime introduces either geodesic incompleteness or negative null curvature, provided the conformal factor is non-constant on at least one complete null geodesic. In the context of bulk reconstruction in AdS/CFT, our results co…
In this paper, we study some intrinsic characterization of conformally compact manifolds. We show that, if a complete Riemannian manifold admits an essential set and its curvature tends to -1 at infinity in certain rate, then it is conformally compactifiable and the compactified metrics can enjoy some regularity at infinity. As consequences we prove some rigidity theorems for complete manifolds whose curvature tends to the hyperbolic one in a rate greater than 2.
We study existence and non-existence of constant scalar curvature metrics conformal and arbitrarily close to homogeneous metrics on spheres, using variational techniques. This describes all critical points of the Hilbert-Einstein functional on such conformal classes, near homogeneous metrics. Both bifurcation and local rigidity type phenomena are obtained for 1-parameter families of U(n+1), Sp(n+1) and Spin(9)-homogeneous metrics.
Let $(X^{n},g_+) $ $(n\geq 3)$ be a Poincaré-Einstein manifold which is $C^{3,α}$ conformally compact with conformal infinity $(\partial X, [\hat{g}])$. On the conformal compactification $(\overline{X}, \bar g=ρ^2g_+)$ via some boundary defining function $ρ$, there are two types of Yamabe constants: $Y(\overline{X},\partial X,[\bar g])$ and $Q(\overline{X},\partial X,[\bar g])$. (See definitions (\ref{def.type1}) and (\ref{def.type2})). In \cite{GH}, Gursky and Han gave an inequality between $Y(\overline{X},\partial X,[\bar g])$ and $Y(\partial X,[\hat{g}])$. In this paper, we first show that …
We study the motion of a charge on a conformally flat Riemannian torus in the presence of magnetic field. We prove that for any non-zero magnetic field there always exist orbits of this motion which have conjugate points. We conjecture that the restriction of conformal flatness of the metric is not essential for this result. This would provide a ``twisted'' version of the recent generalisation of Hopf's rigidity result obtained by Burago and Ivanov.
We re-visit the eigenvalue estimate of the Dirac operator on spin manifolds with boundary in terms of the first eigenvalues of conformal Laplace operator as well as the conformal mean curvature operator. These problems were studied earlier by Hijazi-Montiel-Zhang and Raulot and we re-prove them under weaker assumption that a boundary chirality operator exists. Moreover, on these spin manifolds with boundary, we show that any $C^{3,α}$ conformal compactification of some Poincare-Einstein metric must be the standard hemisphere when the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Dirac operator achieves its …
We prove that the topology, smooth structure, and metric of a compact Lorentzian manifold with boundary is uniquely determined by data at the boundary. The data consists of the lengths and directions of future-directed once-broken geodesics connecting points on the boundary, which are first timelike and then lightlike. This requires the strong causality condition and a weak convexity assumption, but it holds without any assumptions about conjugate points. With an additional convexity assumption we prove the analogous statement for future-directed once-broken timelike geodesics. If there are no…
In this paper we show rigidity results for super-solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic conformally invariant equations on subdomains of the standard $n$-sphere $\mathbb S^n$ under suitable conditions along the boundary. We emphasize that our results do not assume concavity assumption on the fully nonlinear equations we will work with. This proves rigidity for compact connected locally conformally flat manifolds $(M,g)$ with boundary such that the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor satisfy a fully nonlinear elliptic inequality and whose boundary is isometric to a geodesic sphere $\partial D(r)$…
We investigate both linear and nonlinear stability aspects of rigid motions (resp. Möbius transformations) of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ among Sobolev maps from $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$. Unlike similar in flavour results for maps defined on domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and mapping into $\mathbb{R}^n$, not only an isometric (resp. conformal) deficit is necessary in this more flexible setting, but also a deficit measuring the distortion of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ under the maps in consideration. The latter is defined as an associated isoperimetric type of deficit. We mostly focus on the case $n=3$…
Rigidity results for asymptotically locally hyperbolic manifolds with lower bounds on scalar curvature are proved using spinor methods related to the Witten proof of the positive mass theorem. The argument is based on a study of the Dirac operator defined with respect to the Killing connection. The existence of asymptotic Killing spinors is related to the spin structure on the end. The expression for the mass is calculated and proven to vanish for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal boundary a spherical space form, giving rigidity. In the 4-dimensional case, the signature of …
In this paper we show that a complete Schouten soliton whose Ricci tensor has at most two eigenvalues at each point is rigid. This allows the classification of both shrinking and expanding Bach-flat Schouten solitons for $n\geq$ 4. When $n=3$ we are able to conclude rigidity under a more general condition, namely when the Bach tensor is divergence free. These results imply rigidity of locally conformally flat Schouten solitons for $n\geq3$.
We study conformal Fefferman-Lorentz manifolds introduced by Fefferman. To do so, we introduce Fefferman-Lorentz structure on (2n+2)-dimensional manifolds. By using causal conformal vector fields preserving that structure, we shall establish two theorems on compact Fefferman-Lorentz manifolds: One is the coincidence of vanishing curvature between Weyl conformal curvature tensor of Fefferman metrics on a Lorentz manifold $S^1\times N$ and Chern-Moser curvature tensor on a strictly pseudoconvex CR-manifold $N$. Another is the analogue of the conformal rigidity theorem of Obata and Lelong to the …
Conformally variational Riemannian invariants (CVIs), such as the scalar curvature, are homogeneous scalar invariants which arise as the gradient of a Riemannian functional. We establish a wide range of stability and rigidity results involving CVIs, generalizing many such results for the scalar curvature.
