This paper is a continuation of an earlier paper of the authors on the probem of specializations of modules. The aim here is to define specialisations of finitely generated modules over local rings of the form k(u)[X]_P, where u is a family of indeterminates over a field k. The definition depends on the associated primes of the specialisation of the prime ideal P by the substitution of u to elements of k. As in the non-local case, the introduced specializations preserve basic properties and operations on modules. In particular, annihilators of local cohomology modules commute with specializations. As a consequence, Cohen-Macaulayness and Buchsbaumness are preserved by almost al substitutions. The paper also studies the non-Cohen-Macaulay locus and the singular locus of specializations of factor rings of k(u)[X]_P.
Let R be a polynomial ring over k(u), where k is a field k and u is a finite family or inderterminates. The paper introduces the specialization of an arbitrary finitely generated R-module by the substitution of u to elements of k. This definition does not depend on the presentation of the given module and preserves basic properties and operations on modules (e.g. annihilator, dimension, Ext and Tor) for almost all specializations.
The aim of this article is to establish the specialization method on characteristic ideals for finitely generated torsion modules over a complete local normal domain R that is module-finite over $O[[x_1, ..., x_d]]$, where $O$ is the ring of integers of a finite extension of the field of p-adic integers $Q_p$. The specialization method is a technique that recovers the information on the characteristic ideal $char_R(M)$ from $char_{R/I}(M/IM)$, where I varies in a certain family of nonzero principal ideals of R. As applications, we prove Euler system bound over Cohen-Macaulay normal domains by …
The main focus is the generic freeness of local cohomology modules in a graded setting. The present approach takes place in a quite nonrestrictive setting, by solely assuming that the ground coefficient ring is Noetherian. Under additional assumptions, such as when the latter is reduced or a domain, the outcome turns out to be stronger. One important application of these considerations is to the specialization of rational maps and of symmetric and Rees powers of a module.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian domain, and let M and N be finitely generated R-modules. We give new criteria for determining when M tensor N has torsion. We also give constructive formulas for producing a module in the isomorphism class of the torsion submodule of M tensor N. In some cases we determine bounds on the length and minimal number of generators of this module. We focus on the case where R is a numerical semigroup ring with the goal of making progress on the Huneke-Wiegand Conjecture.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. In this paper, we study specialization-closed subsets of Spec R. More precisely, we first characterize the specialization-closed subsets in terms of various closure properties of subcategories of modules. Then, for each nonnegative integer n we introduce the notion of n-wide subcategories of R-modules to consider the question asking when a given specialization-closed subset has cohomological dimension at most n.
In this paper, we prove a result similar to results of Itoh and Hong-Ulrich, proving that integral closure of an ideal is compatible with specialization by a general element of that ideal for ideals of height at least two in a large class of rings. Moreover, we show integral closure of sufficiently large powers of the ideal is compatible with specialization by a general element of the original ideal. In a polynomial ring over an infinite field, we give a class of squarefree monomial ideals for which the integral closure is compatible with specialization by a general linear form.
We prove that the integral closedness of any ideal of height at least two is compatible with specialization by a generic element. This opens the possibility for proofs using induction on the height of an ideal. Also, with additional assumptions, we show that an element is integral over a module if it is integral modulo a generic element of the module. This turns questions about integral closures of modules into problems about integral closures of ideals, by means of a construction known as Bourbaki ideal.
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring, and $\mathcal{Z}$ a stable under specialization subset of $\Spec(R)$. We introduce a notion of $\mathcal{Z}$-cofiniteness and study its main properties. In the case $\dim(\mathcal{Z})\leq 1$, or $\dim(R)\leq 2$, or $R$ is semilocal with $\cd(\mathcal{Z},R) \leq 1$, we show that the category of $\mathcal{Z}$-cofinite $R$-modules is abelian. Also, in each of these cases, we prove that the local cohomology module $H^{i}_{\mathcal{Z}}(X)$ is $\mathcal{Z}$-cofinite for every homologically left-bounded $R$-complex $X$ whose homology modules are finitely gene…
Let (R,m,k) be a local ring. We establish a totally reflexive analogue of the New Intersection Theorem, provided for every totally reflexive R-module M, there is a big Cohen-Macaulay R-module B_M such that the socle of B_M\otimes_RM is zero. When R is a quasi-specialization of a G-regular local ring or when M has complete intersection dimension zero, we show the existence of such a big Cohen-Macaulay R-module. It is conjectured that if R admits a non-zero Cohen-Macaulay module of finite Gorenstein dimension, then it is Cohen-Macaulay. We prove this conjecture if either R is a quasi-specializat…
Let A be a noetherian commutative ring, and let I be an ideal in A. We study questions of flatness and I-adic completeness for infinitely generated A-modules. This is done using the notions of decaying function and I-adically free A-module.
We prove a tight connection between reflexive modules over a one-dimensional ring $R$ and its birational extensions that are self-dual as $R$-modules. Consequently, we show that a complete local reduced Arf ring has finitely many indecomposable reflexive modules up to isomorphism, which can be represented precisely by the local rings infinitely near it. We also characterize Arf rings by the property that any reflexive module is self-dual. We give applications on dimension of subcategories and existence of endomorphism rings of small global dimension (non-commutative desingularizations). Our re…
In this work, we define the face module for a realizable matroid over Z. Its Hilbert series is, indeed, the expected specialization of the Grothendieck - Tutte polynomial defined by Fink and Moci. This work will appear in 'Contributions to Discrete Mathematics'
Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. Denote by mod R the category of finitely generated R-modules. In this paper, we consider the classification problem of resolving subcategories of mod R in terms of specialization-closed subsets of Spec R. We give a classification of the resolving subcategories closed under tensor products and transposes. Under restrictive hypotheses, we also give better classification results.
In this paper, the notions of nonnil-injective modules and nonnil-FP-injective modules are introduced and studied. Especially, we show that a $ϕ$-ring $R$ is an integral domain if and only if any nonnil-injective (resp., nonnil-FP-injective) module $R$-module is injective (resp., FP-injective). Some new characterizations of $ϕ$-von Neumann regular rings, nonnil-Notherian rings and nonnil-coherent rings are given. We finally characterize $ϕ$-Dedekind rings and $ϕ$-\Prufer\ rings in terms of $ϕ$-flat modules, nonnil-injective modules and nonnil-FP-injective modules.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce the notion of colocalization functors with supports in arbitrary subsets of Spec R, which is a natural generalization of right derived functors of section functors with supports in specialization-closed subsets. We prove that the local duality theorem and the vanishing theorem of Grothendieck type hold for colocalization functors.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. Under various hypotheses, it is proved that the center of $\mbox{End}_R(M)$ coincides with the endomorphism ring of the trace ideal of $M$. These results are exploited to establish results for balanced and rigid modules, and to settle certain cases of a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand.
One of the main results of this paper is the characterization of the rings over which all modules are strongly Gorenstein projective. We show that these kinds of rings are very particular cases of the well-known quasi-Frobenius rings. We give examples of rings over which all modules are Gorenstein projective but not necessarily strongly Gorenstein projective.
A ring $R$ is called left GF-closed, if the class of all Gorenstein flat left $R$-modules is closed under extensions. The class of left GF-closed rings includes strictly the one of right coherent rings and the one of rings of finite weak dimension. In this paper, we investigate the Gorenstein flat dimension over left GF-closed rings. Namely, we generalize the fact that the class of all Gorenstein flat left modules is projectively resolving over right coherent rings to left GF-closed rings. Also, we generalize the characterization of Gorenstein flat left modules (then of Gorenstein flat dimensi…
This paper applies G. Lyubeznik's notion of $F$-finite modules to describe in a very down-to-earth manner certain annihilator submodules of some top local cohomology modules over Gorenstein rings. As a consequence we obtain an explicit description of the test ideal of Gorenstein rings in terms of ideals in a regular ring.
The main aim of this paper is to investigate rings over which all (finitely generated strongly) Gorenstein projective modules are projective. We consider this propriety under change of rings, and give various examples of rings with and without this propriety.
We count the number of submodules of an arbitrary module over a countable noetherian commutative ring. We give, along the way, a structural description of meager modules, which are defined as those that do not have the square of a simple module as subquotient. We deduce in particular a characterization of uniserial modules over commutative noetherian rings.
Let $C$ be a semidualizing module. We first investigate the properties of finitely generated $G_C$-projective modules. Then, relative to $C$, we introduce and study the rings of Gorenstein (weak) global dimensions at most 1, which we call $C$-Gorenstein (semi)hereditary rings, and prove that every $C$-Gorenstein hereditary ring is both coherent and $C$-Gorenstein semihereditary.
A famous result due to I. M. Isaacs states that if a commutative ring $R$ has the property that every prime ideal is principal, then every ideal of $R$ is principal. This motivates ring theorists to study commutative rings for which every ideal is a direct sum of cyclically presented modules. In this paper, we study commutative rings whose ideals are direct sum of cyclically presented modules.
Let A be a Noetherian local ring with canonical module K. We characterize A when K is a torsionless, reflexive, or q-torsionfree module. If A is a Cohen-Macaulay ring, H.-B. Foxby proved in 1974 that the A-module K is q-torsionfree if and only if the ring A is q-Gorenstein. With mild assumptions, we provide a generalization of Foxby's result to arbitrary Noetherian local rings admitting the canonical module. In particular, since the reflexivity of the canonical module is closely related to the ring being Gorenstein in low codimension, we also explore quasi-normal rings, introduced by W. V. Vas…
Let $R$ be a graded ring. We introduce a class of graded $R$-modules called Gröbner-coherent modules. Roughly, these are graded $R$-modules that are coherent as ungraded modules because they admit an adequate theory of Gröbner bases. The class of Gröbner-coherent modules is formally similar to the class of coherent modules: for instance, it is an abelian category closed under extension. However, Gröbner-coherent modules come with tools for effective computation that are not present for coherent modules.
We study one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings whose trace ideal of the canonical module is as small as possible. In this paper we call such rings far-flung Gorenstein rings. We investigate far-flung Gorenstein rings in relation with the endomorphism algebras of the maximal ideals and numerical semigroup rings. We show that the solution of the Rohrbach problem in additive number theory provides an upper bound for the multiplicity of far-flung Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings. Reflexive modules over far-flung Gorenstein rings are also studied.
The notion of 2-AGL ring in dimension one which is a natural generalization of almost Gorenstein local ring is posed in terms of the rank of Sally modules of canonical ideals. The basic theory is developed, investigating also the case where the rings considered are numerical semigroup rings over fields. Examples are explored.
Over a commutative local Cohen--Macaulay ring, we view and study the category of maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules as a ring with several objects. We compute the global dimension of this category and thereby extend a result of Leuschke to the case where the ring has arbitrary (as opposed to finite) CM-type.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity (not necessarily local) and $\frak a$ a proper ideal of $R$. We study the invariance of some classes of $\frak a$-relative Cohen-Macaulay modules under pure ring homomorphisms and ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension. Our results extend several results in the existing literature on homological modules.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $M$ a non-zero $R$-module. We introduce the class of \emph{pseudo strongly hollow submodules} (\emph{PS-hollow submodules}, for short) of $M$. Inspired by the theory of modules with \emph{secondary representations}, we investigate modules which can be written as \emph{finite} sums of PS-hollow submodules. In particular, we provide existence and uniqueness theorems for the existence of \emph{minimal} PS-hollow strongly representations of modules over Artinian rings.
We first introduce and study the notion of semi-regular flat modules, and then show that a ring $R$ is a strong \Prufer\ ring if and only if every submodule of a semi-regular flat $R$-module is semi-regular flat, if and only if every ideal of $R$ is semi-regular flat, if and only if every $R$-module has a surjective semi-regular flat (pre)envelope.
It is proven that the weak dimension of each FP-injective module over a chain ring which is either Archimedean or not semicoherent is less or equal to 2.
This works concerns cohomological support varieties of modules over commutative local rings. The main result is that the support of a derived tensor product of a pair of differential graded modules over a Koszul complex is the join of the supports of the modules. This generalizes, and gives another proof of, a result of Dao and the third author dealing with Tor-independent modules over complete intersection rings. The result for Koszul complexes has a broader applicability, including to exterior algebras over local rings.
We prove constructively that for any finite-dimensional commu- tative ring R, every stably free module over R[X;X^{1}] of rank > dim R is free, i.e., R[X;X^{-1}] is (dimR)-Hermite.
If $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ is a hypersurface ring of dimension $d$ with $e(A)=3$. Let $M$ be an MCM $A$-module with $μ(M)=4$ then we prove that $\depth{G(M)}\geq d-3$.
Let $R$ be a $G$-graded ring. In this article, we introduce two new concepts on graded rings, namely, weakly graded rings and invertible graded rings, and we discuss the relations between these concepts and several properties of graded rings. Also, we study the concept of weakly crossed products and study some properties defined on weakly crossed product and give the relationship between this new concept and several properties of graded rings. Moreover, in this article, we give a generalization for the concept of graded essential submodules, and introduce the concept of graded semi-uniform mod…
In this paper, we study the minimal generating system of the canonical module of a Hibi ring. Using the results, we state a characterization of a Hibi ring to be level. We also give a characterization of a Hibi ring to be of type 2. Further, we show that the degrees of the elements of the minimal generating system of the canonical module of a Hibi ring form a set of consecutive integers.
Given a ring R, we investigate tilting modules of the form S \oplus S/R for some injective ring epimorphism R \to S. In particular, we are interested in tilting modules arising from Schofield's universal localization. For some rings, in this way one obtains a classification of all tilting modules.
We study syzygies of (maximal) Cohen-Macaulay modules over one dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. We compare these modules to Cohen-Macaulay modules over the endomorphism ring of the maximal ideal. After this comparison, we give several characterizations of almost Gorenstein rings in terms of syzygies of Cohen-Macaulay modules.
We study Gorenstein dimension and grade of a module $M$ over a filtered ring whose assosiated graded ring is a commutative Noetherian ring. An equality or an inequality between these invariants of a filtered module and its associated graded module is the most valuable property for an investigation of filtered rings. We prove an inequality G-dim$M\leq{G-dim gr}M$ and an equality ${\rm grade}M={\rm grade gr}M$, whenever Gorenstein dimension of ${\rm gr}M$ is finite (Theorems 2.3 and 2.8). We would say that the use of G-dimension adds a new viewpoint for studying filtered rings and modules. We ap…
We define pullback and separated presentations of modules over pullback rings, and, if the ring is a pullback of epimorphisms over a semisimple ring, an algorithm reducing such a presentation of a module to an $R$-diagram. The latter is the input for a classification algorithm of finitely generated modules over a pullback ring of two Dedekind domains. As an example we show how to obtain an $R$-diagram for homology of a chain complex of free modules over a $p$-pullback ring.
The behaviour under coarsening functors of simple, entire, or reduced graded rings, of free graded modules over principal graded rings, of superfluous monomorphisms and of homological dimensions of graded modules, as well as adjoints of degree restriction functors, are investigated.
In this paper we study (non-commutative) rings $R$ over which every finitely generated left module is a direct sum of cyclic modules (called left FGC-rings). The commutative case was a well-known problem studied and solved in 1970s by various authors. It is shown that a Noetherian local left FGC-ring is either an Artinian principal left ideal ring, or an Artinian principal right ideal ring, or a prime ring over which every two-sided ideal is principal as a left and a right ideal. In particular, it is shown that a Noetherian local duo-ring $R$ is a left FGC-ring if and only if $R$ is a right FG…
We present basic properties of Gröbner bases of submodules of a free module of finite rank over a polynomial ring $R$ with coefficients in a graded truncated discrete valuations ring $A$. As an application, we give a criterion for a finitely generated $R$-module to be flat over $A$. Its non-graded version is also given.
Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. In this paper we study the structure of Ulrich $R$-modules mainly in the case where R has minimal multiplicity. We explore generation of Ulrich R-modules, and clarify when the Ulrich R-modules are precisely the syzygies of maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-modules. We also investigate the structure of Ulrich R-modules as an exact category.
A well-known result of Köthe and Cohen-Kaplansky states that a commutative ring $R$ has the property that every $R$-module is a direct sum of cyclic modules if and only if $R$ is an Artinian principal ideal ring. This motivated us to study commutative rings for which every ideal is a direct sum of cyclic modules. Recently, in [M. Behboodi, A. Ghorbani, A. Moradzadeh-Dehkordi, Commutative Noetherian local rings whose ideals are direct sums of cyclic modules, J. Algebra 345 (2011) 257--265] the authors considered this question in the context of finite direct products of commutative Noetherian lo…
