The class of semi-hereditary rings is an important class of rings in theories that do not assume the Noetherian condition, such as perfectoid ring theory. We prove several results concerning the structure theory of this class, focusing on the relationship between semi-hereditary rings and the flatness of torsion-free modules. We also consider Shimomoto's problem concerning the flatness of the Frobenius map.
For any commutative ring $A$ we introduce a generalization of $S$--artinian rings using a hereditary torsion theory $σ$ instead of a multiplicative closed subset $S\subseteq{A}$. It is proved that if $A$ is a totally $σ$--artinian ring, then $σ$ must be of finite type, and $A$ is totally $σ$--noetherian.
In this paper, we introduce and study the rings of Gorenstein homological dimensions small or equal than 1, which we call Gorenstein (semi)hereditary rings, specially particular cases of these rings, which we call strongly Gorenstein (semi)hereditary rings.
Let $C$ be a semidualizing module. We first investigate the properties of finitely generated $G_C$-projective modules. Then, relative to $C$, we introduce and study the rings of Gorenstein (weak) global dimensions at most 1, which we call $C$-Gorenstein (semi)hereditary rings, and prove that every $C$-Gorenstein hereditary ring is both coherent and $C$-Gorenstein semihereditary.
If every subring of an integral domain is atomic, then we say that the latter is hereditarily atomic. In this paper, we study hereditarily atomic domains. First, we characterize when certain direct limits of Dedekind domains are Dedekind domains in terms of atomic overrings. Then we use this characterization to determine the fields that are hereditarily atomic. On the other hand, we investigate hereditary atomicity in the context of rings of polynomials and rings of Laurent polynomials, characterizing the fields and rings whose rings of polynomials and rings of Laurent polynomials, respectivel…
It is known that any torsion element in a lambda-ring is nilpotent. In this note we deduce a sharp estimate for the nilpotence degree of such an element.
It is proved that if a ring is left hereditary, left perfect and right coherent, then the stable category has cokernels. Moreover, we show that the condition for a ring to be left perfect and right coherent is also necessary for the stable category to have cokernels, provided that the ring is left hereditary and satisfies the additional condition that there are no non-trivial projective injective left modules over it (satisfied, for instance, by integral domains). This, in particular, implies that, for a Dedekind domain, the stable category has cokernels if and only if the domain is left perfe…
Let A be a Noetherian local ring with canonical module K. We characterize A when K is a torsionless, reflexive, or q-torsionfree module. If A is a Cohen-Macaulay ring, H.-B. Foxby proved in 1974 that the A-module K is q-torsionfree if and only if the ring A is q-Gorenstein. With mild assumptions, we provide a generalization of Foxby's result to arbitrary Noetherian local rings admitting the canonical module. In particular, since the reflexivity of the canonical module is closely related to the ring being Gorenstein in low codimension, we also explore quasi-normal rings, introduced by W. V. Vas…
For any commutative ring $A$ we introduce a generalization of $S$-noetherian rings using a hereditary torsion theory $σ$ instead of a multiplicatively closed subset $S\subseteq{A}$. It is proved that if $A$ is a totally $σ$-noetherian ring, then $σ$ is of finite type, and that totally $σ$-noetherian is a local property.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian domain, and let M and N be finitely generated R-modules. We give new criteria for determining when M tensor N has torsion. We also give constructive formulas for producing a module in the isomorphism class of the torsion submodule of M tensor N. In some cases we determine bounds on the length and minimal number of generators of this module. We focus on the case where R is a numerical semigroup ring with the goal of making progress on the Huneke-Wiegand Conjecture.
A commutative ring is said to have ITI with respect to an ideal a if the a-torsion functor preserves injectivity of modules. Classes of rings with ITI or without ITI with respect to certain sets of ideals are identified. Behaviour of ITI under formation of rings of fractions, tensor products and idealisation is studied. Applications to local cohomology over non-noetherian rings are given.
Lyubeznik conjectured that local cohomology modules of regular rings have finitely many associated primes. We examine this conjecture for polynomial rings over the integers, and record some equational identities that arise from studying special cases.
Tensor products usually have nonzero torsion. This is a central theme of Auslander's paper "Modules over unramified regular local rings"; the theme continues in the work of Huneke and Wiegand. The main focus in this note is on tensor powers of a finitely generated module over a local ring. Also, we study torsion-free modules N with the property that its tensor product with any module M has torsion, unless M is very special. Important examples of such modules N are the Frobenius power of a ring, viewed as a module over itself, that is a complete intersection domain of positive characteristic.
In this paper, we investigate the notions of $\mathcal{X}^\bot$-projective, $\mathcal{X}$-injective and $\mathcal{X}$-flat modules and give some characterizations of these modules, where $\mathcal{X}$ is a class of left $R$-modules. We prove that the class of all $\mathcal{X}^\bot$-projective modules is Kaplansky. Further, if the class of all $\mathcal{X}$-projective $R$-modules is closed under direct limits, we show the existence of $\mathcal{X}^\bot$-projective covers and $\mathcal{X}$-injective envelopes over a $\mathcal{X}^\bot$-hereditary ring $R.$ Moreover, we decompose a $\mathcal{X}^\b…
Let $\mathfrak{a}$ be an ideal in a commutative ring $R$. For an $R$-module $M$, we consider the small $\mathfrak{a}$-torsion $Γ_{\mathfrak{a}}(M)=\{x\in M\mid\exists n\in\mathbb{N}:\mathfrak{a}^n\subseteq(0:_Rx)\}$ and the large $\mathfrak{a}$-torsion $\overlineΓ_{\mathfrak{a}}(M)=\{x\in M\mid\mathfrak{a}\subseteq\sqrt{(0:_Rx)}\}$. This gives rise to two functors $Γ_{\mathfrak{a}}$ and $\overlineΓ_{\mathfrak{a}}$ that coincide if $R$ is noetherian, but not in general. In this article, basic properties of as well as the relation between these two functors are studied, and several examples are …
When R is a commutative ring with identity, and if k is a natural number with kR = R, then C. Weibel proved that SK_1(R[X]) has no k-torsion. We reprove his result for any associative ring R with identity in which kR = R.

Polstra showed that the cardinality of the torsion subgroup of the divisor class group of a local strongly $F$-regular ring is finite. We expand upon this result and prove that the reciprocal of the $F$-signature of a local strongly $F$-regular ring $R$ bounds the cardinality of the torsion subgroup of the divisor class group of $R$.
In the present paper, we give some sufficient conditions for $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])$ to be torsionfree, where $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])$ denote the divisor class group of the toric ring $\Bbbk[P]$ of an integral polytope $P$. We prove that $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])$ is torsionfree if $P$ is compressed, and $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])$ is torsionfree if $P$ is a $(0,1)$-polytope which has at most $\dim P+2$ facets. Moreover, we characterize the toric rings of $(0,1)$-polytopes in the case $\operatorname{Cl}(\Bbbk[P])\cong \mathbb{Z}$.
We investigate parametrizations of compactly generated t-structures, or more generally, t-structures with a definable coaisle, in the unbounded derived category D(Mod-A) of a ring A. To this end, we provide a construction of t-structures from chains in the lattice of ring epimorphisms starting in A, which is a natural extension of the construction of compactly generated t-structures from chains of subsets of the Zariski spectrum known for the commutative noetherian case. We also provide constructions of silting and cosilting objects in D(Mod-A). This leads us to classification results over som…
Let $R$ be a ring, and $n$ a fixed nonnegative integer. An $R$-module $W$ is called $L_{n}$-injective if ${\rm Ext}_{R}^{1}(M,W)=0$ for any $R$-module $M$ with flat dimension at most $n$. In this paper, we prove first that ($\mathcal{F}_{n},\mathcal{L}_{n}$) is a complete hereditary cotorsion theory, where $\mathcal{F}_n$ (resp. $\mathcal{L}_n$) denotes the class of all $R$-modules with flat dimension at most $n$ (resp. $L_{n}$-injective $R$-modules). Then we introduce the $L_{n}$-injective dimension of a module and $L_n$-global dimension of a ring. Finally, over rings with weak global dimensi…
We classify compactly generated co-t-structures on the derived category of a commutative noetherian ring. In order to accomplish that, we develop a theory for compactly generated Hom-orthogonal pairs (also known as torsion pairs in the literature) in triangulated categories that resembles Bousfield localization theory. Finally, we show that the category of perfect complexes over a connected commutative noetherian ring admits only the trivial co-t-structures and (de)suspensions of the canonical co-t-structure and use this to describe all silting objects in the category.
Let $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring with total quotient ring $K$. An $R$-module $M$ is called simple divisible, if $M$ is divisible $\neq 0$, but every proper submodule $0 \neq U \subsetneqq M$ is not divisible. Dually, $M$ is called simple torsion free, if $M$ ist torsion free $\neq 0$, but, for every proper submodule $0 \neq U \subsetneqq M$, the factor module $M/U$ is not torsion free. Our first result is that $M \neq 0$ is simple torsion free iff $M$ is a submodule of $κ(\mathfrak{p}) = R_{\mathfrak{p}}/\mathfrak{p} R_{\mathfrak{p}}$ for a maximal element $\mathf…
We study the difference between the lengths of the torsion of the differential modules of the local ring R of an algebroid curve and its first quadratic transform. The conjecture is that this difference should be positive if R is not regular. This is shown to be true in some cases, especially for stable complete intersections and for semigroup rings which are complete intersections.
