An integral domain R is said to be a splinter if it is a direct summand, as an R-module, of every module-finite extension ring. Hochster's direct summand conjecture is precisely the conjecture that every regular local ring is a splinter. An integral domain containing the rational numbers is a splinter if and only if it is a normal ring, but the notion is more subtle for rings of positive characteristic: F-regular rings are splinters, and Hochster and Huneke proved that the converse is true for Gorenstein rings. We extend their result by showing that Q-Gorenstein splinters of positive characteristic are F-regular.
We show that Noetherian splinters ascend under essentially étale homomorphisms. Along the way, we also prove that the henselization of a Noetherian local splinter is always a splinter and that the completion of a local splinter with geometrically regular formal fibers is a splinter. Finally, we give an example of a (non-excellent) Gorenstein local splinter with mild singularities whose completion is not a splinter. Our results provide evidence for a strengthening of the direct summand theorem, namely that regular maps preserve the splinter property.
We show that the splinter property ascends along regular residue field extensions, and along arbitrary regular maps in equal characteristic. We also study the splinter property of non-Noetherian rings, especially those related to ultrapowers, to the extent necessary for our main results.
A Noetherian reduced ring $A$ is called a birational derived splinter if for all proper birational maps $X\to\operatorname{Spec}(A)$, the canonical map $A\to Rf_*\mathcal{O}_X$ splits. In equal characteristic zero this property characterizes rational singularities, but much less can be said in positive or mixed characteristics. In this paper, we prove some fundamental properties of this notion, including the behavior under localization, taking a pure subring, taking direct limit, and along an étale extension. In particular, direct limit of rational singularities in characteristic zero has rati…
We say an excellent local domain $(S,n)$ satisfies the vanishing conditions for maps of Tor, if for every $A\to R\to S$ with $A$ regular and $A\to R$ module-finite torsion-free extension, and every $A$-module $M$, the map $Tor^A_i(M, R)\to Tor_i^A(M, S)$ vanishes for every $i\geq 1$. Hochster-Huneke's conjecture (theorem in equal characteristic) thus states that regular rings satisfy such vanishing conditions. The main theorem of this paper shows that, in equal characteristic, rings that satisfy the vanishing conditions for maps of Tor are exactly derived splinters in the sense of Bhatt. In pa…
Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring. We prove that $R$ is regular of dimension at most four if, and only if, every prime ideal, defining a Gorenstein quotient ring, is syzygetic. We deduce a characterization of these rings in terms of the André-Quillen homology.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring with infinite residue class field. Then the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring in the sense of Goto-Takahashi-Taniguchi for every $\mathfrak{m}$-primary integrally closed ideal $I$ in $R$.
This paper main goal is to measure the defect of Cohen-Macaulayness, Gorensteiness, complete intersection and regularity for the tensor product of algebras over a ring. For this sake, we determine the homological invariants which are inherent to these notions, such as the Krull dimension, depth, injective dimension, type and embedding dimension of the tensor product constructions in terms of those of their components.
Let $ R $ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that the $ n $th syzygy module of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay $ R $-module cannot have a semidualizing direct summand for every $ n \ge 1 $. In particular, it follows that $ R $ is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy of a canonical module of $ R $ has a non-zero free direct summand. We also give a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of minimal multiplicity to be regular or Gorenstein. These criteria are based on vanishing of certain Exts or Tors involving syzygy modules of the residue field.
A question of Conca, Rossi, and Valla asks whether every quadratic Gorenstein ring $R$ of regularity three is Koszul. In a previous paper, we use idealization to answer their question, proving that in nine or more variables there exist quadratic Gorenstein rings of regularity three which are not Koszul. In this paper, we study the analog of the Conca-Rossi-Valla question when the regularity of $R$ is four or more. Let $R$ be a quadratic Gorenstein ring having $\mathrm{codim}\, R = c$ and $\mathrm{reg}\, R = r \ge 4$. We prove that if $c = r+1$ then $R$ is always Koszul, and for every $c \geq r…
This paper applies G. Lyubeznik's notion of $F$-finite modules to describe in a very down-to-earth manner certain annihilator submodules of some top local cohomology modules over Gorenstein rings. As a consequence we obtain an explicit description of the test ideal of Gorenstein rings in terms of ideals in a regular ring.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring. In this paper, we study those finitely generated $R$-modules whose Cousin complexes provide Gorenstein injective resolutions. We call such a module a G-Gorenstein module. Characterizations of G-Gorenstein modules are given and a class of such modules is determined. It is shown that the class of G-Gorenstein modules strictly contains the class of Gorenstein modules. Also, we provide a Gorenstein injective resolution for a balanced big Cohen-Macaulay $R$-module. Finally, using the notion of a G-Gorenstein module, we obtain characterizations of Gorenstein…
Let $(R,\frak m, k)$ be a noetherian local ring. It is well-known that $R$ is regular if and only if the injective dimension of $k$ is finite. In this paper it is shown that $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if the Gorenstein injective dimension of $k$ is finite. On the other hand a generalized version of the so-called Bass formula is proved for finitely generated modules of finite Gorenstein injective dimension. It also improves Christensen's generalized Bass formula (cf. "Gorenstein dimensions", volume 1747 of Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 2000).
Let $A$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with $\operatorname{dim} A = d\ge 3$, possessing the canonical module ${\mathrm K}_A$. Let $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ $(3 \le r \le d)$ be a subsystem of parameters of $A$ and set $Q= (a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r)$. It is shown that if the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(Q)$ of $Q$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, then $A$ is a regular local ring and $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ is a part of a regular system of parameters of $A$.
We study the coordinate ring of an $L$-convex polyomino, determine its regularity in terms of the maximal number of rooks that can be placed in the polyomino. We also characterize the Gorenstein $L$-convex polyominoes and those which are Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum, and compute the Cohen--Macaulay type of any $L$-convex polyomino in terms of the maximal rectangles covering it.
We study the Rees algebra of a perfect Gorenstein ideal of codimension 3 in a hypersurface ring. We provide a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of these rings by introducing a modified Jacobian dual and applying a recursive algorithm. Once the defining equations are known, we explore properties of these Rees algebras such as Cohen-Macaulayness and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
In this article we investigate when a complete ideal in a two-dimensional regular local ring is a multiplier ideal of some ideal with an integral multiplying parameter. In particular, we show that this question is closely connected to the Gorenstein property of the blowup along the ideal.
We show that a non-trivial fiber product $S\times_k T$ of commutative noetherian local rings $S,T$ with a common residue field $k$ is Gorenstein if and only if it is a hypersurface of dimension 1. In this case, both $S$ and $T$ are regular rings of dimension 1. We also give some applications of this result.
The purpose of this paper is, as part of the stratification of Cohen-Macaulay rings, to investigate the question of when the fiber products are almost Gorenstein rings. We show that the fiber product $R \times_T S$ of Cohen-Macaulay local rings $R$, $S$ of the same dimension $d>0$ over a regular local ring $T$ with $\dim T=d-1$ is an almost Gorenstein ring if and only if so are $R$ and $S$. Besides, the other generalizations of Gorenstein properties are also explored.
We introduce Artinian Gorenstein algebras defined by the face posets of regular polyhedra. We consider the strong Lefschetz property and Hodge--Riemann relation for the algebras. We show the strong Lefschetz property of the algebras for all Platonic solids. On the other hand, for some Platonic solids, we show that the algebras do not satisfy the Hodge--Riemann relation with respect to some strong Lefschetz elements.
Let Q be a regular local ring of dimension 3. We show how to trim a Gorenstein ideal in Q to obtain an ideal that defines a quotient ring that is close to Gorenstein in the sense that its Koszul homology algebra is a Poincare duality algebra P padded with a non-zero graded vector space on which P_{\ge 1} acts trivially. We explicitly construct an infinite family of such rings.
In this note we study trace ideals of canonical modules. Characterizations of the trace ideals in terms of annihilators of certain Ext modules are given. We apply our results to study many classes of rings close to being Gorenstein that appear in recent literature. We discuss the behavior of nearly Gorensteinness, introduced by Herzog-Hibi-Stamate, under reductions by regular sequences. A nearly Gorenstein version of the Tachikawa conjecture is posed, and an affirmative answer given for type 2 rings. We also introduce the class of weakly almost Gorenstein rings using the canonical module, and …
Hochster and Huneke showed that the property of F-regularity deforms for Gorenstein rings, i.e., if (R,m) is a Gorenstein local ring such that R/tR is F-regular for some nonzerodivisor t in m, then R is F-regular. This result was later extended to the case of Q-Gorenstein rings by Smith (for rings of characteristic zero) and Aberbach, Katzman, and MacCrimmon (for rings of positive characteristic). We investigate the deformation of strong F-regularity using an anti-canonical cover of R, i.e., a symbolic Rees algebra S = R + It + I^(2)t^2 + ..., where I is an inverse for the canonical module in …
Let $R$ be a standard graded Gorenstein algebra over a field presented by quadrics. Conca, Rossi, and Valla have shown that such a ring is Koszul if $\mathrm{reg}\, R \leq 2$ or if $\mathrm{reg}\, = 3$ and $c= \mathrm{codim}\, R \leq 4$, and they ask whether this is true for $\mathrm{reg}\, R = 3$ in general. We determine sufficient conditions on a non-Koszul quadratic Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ that guarantee the Nagata idealization $\tilde{R} = R \ltimes ω_R(-a-1)$ is a non-Koszul quadratic Gorenstein ring. We use this to negatively answer the question of Conca-Rossi-Valla, constructing non-Kos…
Regularity, complete intersection and Gorenstein properties of a local ring can be characterized by homological conditions on the canonical homomorphism into its residue field (Serre, Avramov, Auslander). It is also known that in positive characteristic, the Frobenius endomorphism can also be used for these characterizations (Kunz, ...), and more generally any contracting endomorphism. We introduce here a class of local homomorphisms, in some sense larger than all above, for which these characterizations still hold, providing an unified treatment for this class of homomorphisms.
The question of when the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring is explored, where $R$ is a two-dimensional regular local ring and $I$ a contracted ideal of $R$. It is known that ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring for every integrally closed ideal $I$ of $R$. The main results of the present paper show that if $I$ is a contracted ideal with $\mathrm{o}(I) \le 2$, then ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, while if $\mathrm{o}(I) \ge 3$, then ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is not necessarily an almost Gorenstei…
Let $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let $I$ be an ideal of $A$. We prove that the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(I)$ is an almost Gorenstein ring in the following cases: (1) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a two-dimensional excellent Gorenstein normal domain over an algebraically closed field $K \cong A/{\mathfrak m}$ and $I$ is a $p_g$-ideal; (2) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a two-dimensional almost Gorenstein local ring having minimal multiplicity and $I={\mathfrak m}^{\ell}$ for all $\ell \ge 1$; (3) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a regular local ring of dimension $d \ge 2$ and $I={\mathfrak m}…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$ and $\mathcal{D}(R)$ denote the derived category of $R$-modules. We investigate the theory of local homology in conjunction with Gorenstein flat modules. Let $X$ be a homologically bounded to the right complex and $Q$ a bounded to the right complex of Gorenstein flat $R$-modules such that $Q$ and $X$ are isomorphic in $\mathcal{D}(R)$. We establish a natural isomorphism ${\bf L}Λ^{\fa}(X)\simeq Λ^{\fa}(Q)$ in $\mathcal{D}(R)$ which immediately asserts that $\sup {\bf L}Λ^{\fa}(X)\leq \Gfd_RX$. This isomorphism yields several conse…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring. An $R$-module $M$ is said to be super finitely presented if there is an exact sequence of $R$-modules $\cdots\rightarrow P_n\rightarrow\cdots \rightarrow P_1\rightarrow P_0\rightarrow M\rightarrow 0$ where each $P_i$ is finitely generated projective. In this paper it is shown that if $R$ has the property (B) that every super finitely presented module has finite Gorenstein projective dimension, then every finitely generated Gorenstein projective module is super finitely presented. As an application of the notion of super finitely presented modules, we show that if…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring which contains a regular sequence $ \underline{x} = x_1,\ldots,x_d \in \mathfrak{m} \smallsetminus \mathfrak{m}^2 $ such that $ \mathfrak{m}^3 \subseteq (\underline{x}) $. Let $ M $ be a finite $ R $-module with maximal complexity or curvature, e.g., $ M $ can be a nonzero direct summand of some syzygy module of the residue field $ R/\mathfrak{m} $. It is shown that the following are equivalent: (1) $R$ is Gorenstein, (2) $\mathrm{Ext}_R^{\gg 0}(M,R)=0$, and (3) $\mathrm{Tor}_{\gg 0}^R(M,ω) = 0$, where $ω$ denotes a canonical module…
Let $(A,\m)$ be a Gorenstein local ring of dimension $d \geq 1$. Let $\CMS(A)$ be the stable category of maximal \CM \ $A$-modules and let $\ICMS(A)$ denote the set of isomorphism classes in $\CMS(A)$. We define a function $ξ\colon \ICMS(A) \rt \ZZ$ which behaves well with respect to exact triangles in $\CMS(A)$. We then apply this to (Gorenstein) liason theory. We prove that if $\dim A \geq 2$ and $A$ is not regular then the even liason classes of $\m^n; n\geq 1$ is an infinite set. We also prove that if $A$ is an complete equi-characteristic simple singularity with $A/\m$ uncountable then fo…
We study induced additive actions on projective hypersurfaces, i.e. regular actions of the algebraic group $\mathbb G_a^m$ with an open orbit that can be extended to a regular action on the ambient projective space. We prove that if a projective hypersurface admits an induced additive action, then it is unique if and only if the hypersurface is non-degenerate. We also show that for any $n\geq 2$, there exists a non-degenerate hypersurface in $\mathbb P^n$ of each degree $d$ from $2$ to $n$.
A new construction of rings is introduced, studied, and applied. Given surjective homomorphisms $R\to T\gets S$ of local rings, and ideals in $R$ and $S$ that are isomorphic to some $T$-module $V$, the \emph{connected sum} $R#_TS$ is defined to be the local ring obtained by factoring out the diagonal image of $V$ in the fiber product $R\times_TS$. When $T$ is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension $d$ and $V$ is a canonical module of $T$, it is proved that if $R$ and $S$ are Gorenstein of dimension $d$, then so is $R#_TS$. This result is used to study how closely an artinian ring can be approximated by G…
Building on previous work by the same authors, we show that certain ideals defining Gorenstein rings have expected resurgence, and thus satisfy the stable Harbourne Conjecture. In prime characteristic, we can take any radical ideal defining a Gorenstein ring in a regular ring, provided its symbolic powers are given by saturations with the maximal ideal. While this property is not suitable for reduction to characteristic $p$, we show that a similar result holds in equicharacteristic $0$ under the additional hypothesis that the symbolic Rees algebra of $I$ is noetherian.
We show that the Ehrhart h-vector of an integer Gorenstein polytope with a regular unimodular triangulation satisfies McMullen's g-theorem; in particular, it is unimodal. This result generalizes a recent theorem of Athanasiadis (conjectured by Stanley) for compressed polytopes. It is derived from a more general theorem on Gorenstein affine normal monoids M: one can factor K[M] (K a field) by a "long" regular sequence in such a way that the quotient is still a normal affine monoid algebra. This technique reduces all questions about the Ehrhart h-vector of P to the Ehrhart h-vector of a Gorenste…
The goal of this paper is to develop tools to study maximal families of Gorenstein quotients A of a polynomial ring R. We prove a very general Theorem on deformations of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a scheme Proj(A) which is defined as the degeneracy locus of a regular section of the dual of some sheaf M^~ of rank r supported on say an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme Proj(B) of Proj(R). Under certain conditions (notably; M maximally Cohen-Macaulay and the top exterior power of M^~ a twist of the canonical sheaf), then A is Gorenstein, and under additional assumptions, we show the…
Given a normal $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein complex variety $X$, we prove that if one spreads it out to a normal $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein scheme $\mathcal{X}$ of mixed characteristic whose reduction $\mathcal{X}_p$ modulo $p$ has normal $F$-pure singularities for a single prime $p$, then $X$ has log canonical singularities. In addition, we show its analog for log terminal singularities, without assuming that $\mathcal{X}$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein, which is a generalization of a result of Ma-Schwede. We also prove that two-dimensional strongly $F$-regular singularities are stable under equal charac…
Let (R,m) -> (S,n) be a flat local homomorphism of excellent local rings. We investigate the conditions under which the weak or strong F-regularity of R passes to S. We show that is suffices that the closed fiber S/mS be Gorenstein and either F-finite (if R and S have a common test element), or F-rational (otherwise).
Given an Artinian local ring $R$, we define its Gorenstein colength $g(R)$ to measure how closely we can approximate $R$ by a Gorenstein Artin local ring. In this paper, we show that $R = T/I$ satisfies the inequality $g(R) \leq λ(R/\soc(R))$ in the following two cases: (a) $T$ is a power series ring over a field of characteristic zero and $I$ an ideal that is the power of a system of parameters or (b) $T$ is a 2-dimensional regular local ring with infinite residue field and $I$ is primary to the maximal ideal of $T$. In the first case, we compute $g(R)$ by constructing a Gorenstein Artin loca…
We make use of the concepts of Tor-rigid and rigid-test modules, among others, to investigate the interplay between cohomology vanishing and the finiteness of several homological dimensions such as projective, injective and Gorenstein injective dimensions. Besides criteria for the freeness of modules, the applications include new characterizations of Gorenstein and regular local rings, which are also of interest in the realm of algebraic geometry.
The paper answers a question by Jonathan Wahl, giving examples of regular surfaces S (so their canonical ring is a Gorenstein graded ring) having the following properties: 1) their canonical divisor K_S = rL is a positive multiple of an ample divisor L 2) the graded ring R := R (X,L ) associated to L is not Cohen-Macaulay. In the appendix Wahl shows how these examples lead to the existence of Cohen-Macaulay singularities with K_X Q -Cartier which are not Q -Gorenstein, since their index one cover is not Cohen- Macaulay.
Given a commutative noetherian non-positive DG-ring with bounded cohomology which has a dualizing DG-module, we study its regular, Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay loci. We give a sufficient condition for the regular locus to be open, and show that the Gorenstein locus is always open. However, both of these loci are often empty: we show that no matter how nice $\mathrm{H}^0(A)$ is, there are examples where the Gorenstein locus of $A$ is empty. We then show that the Cohen-Macaulay locus of a commutative noetherian DG-ring with bounded cohomology which has a dualizing DG-module always contains a de…
We establish a criterion for the strong $F$-regularity of a (non-Gorenstein) Cohen-Macaulay reduced complete local ring of dimension at least $2$, containing a perfect field of prime characteristic $p$. We also describe an explicit generating morphism (in the sense of Lyubeznik) for the top local cohomology module with support in certain ideals arising from an $n\times (n-1)$ matrix $X$ of indeterminates. For $p\geq 5$, these results led us to derive a simple, new proof of the well-known fact that the generic determinantal ring defined by the maximal minors of $X$ is strongly $F$-regular.
We obtain various characterizations of commutative Noetherian local rings $(R, \fm)$ in terms of homological dimensions of certain finitely generated modules. For example, we establish that $R$ is Gorenstein if the Gorenstein injective dimension of the maximal ideal $\fm$ of $R$ is finite. Furthermore we prove that $R$ must be regular if a single $\Ext_{R}^{n}(I,J)$ vanishes for some integrally closed $\fm$-primary ideals $I$ and $J$ of $R$ and for some integer $n\geq \dim(R)$. Along the way we observe that local rings that admit maximal Cohen-Macaulay Tor-rigid modules are Cohen-Macaulay.
We classify all convex polyomino whose coordinate rings are Gorenstein. We also compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the coordinate ring of any stack polyomino in terms of the smallest interval which contains its vertices. We give a recursive formula for computing the multiplicity of a stack polyomino.
Given a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ with total ring of fractions $Q(R)$, and a finitely generated $R$-submodule $M$ of $Q(R)$, we prove an equality between trace ideal, and certain annihilator of Ext and Tor of $M$. As a consequence, we answer in one-dimensional local analytically unramified case, a question raised by the present author and R. Takahashi. As another application, we give an alternative proof of a recent result of Ö. Esentepe that for one-dimensional analytically unramified Gorenstein local rings, the cohomology annihilator of Iyengar and Takahashi coincides with the conducto…
A quaternary quartic form, a quartic form in four variables, is the dual socle generator of an Artinian Gorenstein ring of codimension and regularity 4. We present a classification of quartic forms in terms of rank and powersum decompositions which corresponds to the classification by the Betti tables of the corresponding Artinian Gorenstein rings. This gives a stratification of the space of quaternary quartic forms which we compare with the Noether-Lefschetz stratification. We discuss various phenomena related to this stratification. We study the geometry of powersum varieties for a general f…
A projectively normal Calabi-Yau threefold $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ has an ideal $I_X$ which is arithmetically Gorenstein, of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity four. Such ideals have been intensively studied when $I_X$ is a complete intersection, as well as in the case where $X$ is codimension three. In the latter case, the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud theorem shows that $I_X$ is given by the Pfaffians of a skew-symmetric matrix. A number of recent papers study the situation when $I_X$ has codimension four. We prove there are 16 possible betti tables for an arithmetically Gorenstein ideal $I$ with $\math…
