We provide bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in terms of ``defining equations'' by using elements that annihilates some cohomology modules, inspired by works of Miyazaki, Nagel, Schenzel and Vogel. The elements in these annihilators are provided either by liaison or by tight closure theories. Our results hold in any characteristic.
This paper discusses the problem of whether it is possible to annihilate elements of local cohomology modules by elements of arbitrarily small order under a fixed valuation. We first discuss the general problem and its relationship to the Direct Summand Conjecture, and next present two concrete examples where annihilators with small order are shown to exist. We then prove a more general theorem, where the existence of such annihilators is established in some cases using results on abelian varieties and the Albanese map.
In this paper, we study the properties of noetherian rings with uniform annihilators. It turns out that all these rings should be universally catenary and locally equidimensional. We will give a necessary and sufficient condition for these rings, which enable us to prove that if a ring R is the image of a Cohen-Macaulay ring of finite dimension, then R has a uniform annihilator of local cohomology. Moreover, we will give a positive answer to the conjecture [Hu, Conjecture 2.13] about the excellent rings with dimension no more than 5.
The aim of this paper is to study the theory of cohomology annihilators over commutative Gorenstein rings. We adopt a triangulated category point of view and study the annihilation of stable category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. We prove that in dimension one the cohomology annihilator ideal and the conductor ideal coincide under mild assumptions. We present a condition on a ring homomorphism between Gorenstein rings which allows us to carry the cohomology annihilator of the domain to that of the codomain. As an application, we generalize the Milnor-Jung formula for algebraic curves to t…
Yoshizawa investigated when local cohomology modules have an annihilator that does not depend on the choice of the defining ideal. In this paper we refine his results and investigate the relationship between annihilators of local cohomology modules and restricted flat dimensions.
This paper investigates when local cohomology modules have an annihilator that does not depend on the choice of an ideal. Takahashi classified the dominant resolving subcategories of the category of finitely generated modules over a commutative Noetherian ring. We show that his classification theorem describes annihilation results of local cohomology modules over a finite-dimensional ring with certain assumptions or a Cohen-Macaulay ring.
Let $\mathfrak a$ be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ and $t$ be a non-negative integer. Let $M$ and $N$ be two finitely generated $R$-modules. In certain cases, we give some bounds under inclusion for the annihilators of $\operatorname{Ext}^t_R(M, N)$ and $\operatorname{H}^t_{\mathfrak a}(M)$ in terms of minimal primary decomposition of the zero submodule of $M$ which are independent of the choice of minimal primary decomposition. Then, by using those bounds, we compute the annihilators of local cohomology and Ext modules in certain cases.
The aim of this paper is to study a deep connection between local cohomology annihilators and Macaulayfication and arithmetic Macaulayfication over a local ring. Local cohomology annihilators appear through the notion of p-standard system of parameters. For a local ring, we prove an equivalence of the existence of Macaulayfications; the existence of a p-standard system of parameters; being a quotient of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring; and the verification of Faltings' Annihilator theorem. For a finitely generated module which is unmixed and faithful, we prove an equivalence of the existence of an…
One classical topic in the study of local cohomology is whether the non-vanishing of a specific local cohomology module is equivalent to the vanishing of its annihilator; this has been studied by several authors, including Huneke, Koh, Lyubeznik and Lynch. Motivated by questions raised by Lynch and Zhang, the goal of this paper is to provide some new results about this topic, which provide some partial positive answers to these questions. The main technical tool we exploit is the structure of local cohomology as module over rings of differential operators.
It is proved that for a ring $R$ that is either an affine algebra over a field, or an equicharacteristic complete local ring, some power of the Jacobian ideal of $R$ annihilates $\mathrm{Ext}^{d+1}_{R}(-,-)$, where $d$ is the Krull dimension of $R$. Sufficient conditions are identified under which the Jacobian ideal itself annihilates these Ext-modules, and examples are provided that show that this is not always the case. A crucial new idea is to consider a derived version of the Noether different of an algebra.
Let $\frak a$ denote an ideal in a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. In this paper, we introduce the concept of the cohomological dimension filtration $\mathscr{M} =\{M_i\}_{i=0}^c$, where $ c={\rm cd} ({\frak a},M)$ and $M_i$ denotes the largest submodule of $M$ such that ${\rm cd} ({\frak a}, M_i)\leq i.$ Some properties of this filtration are investigated. In particular, in the case that $(R, \frak m)$ is local and $c= \dim M$, we are able to determine the annihilator of the top local cohomology module $H_{\frak a}^c(M)$. In fact, it is shown that ${\r…
The cohomology annihilator of a noetherian ring that is finitely generated as a module over its center is introduced. Results are established linking the existence of non-trivial cohomology annihilators and the existence of strong generators for the category of finitely generated modules. Exploiting this link, results of Popescu and Roczen, and Wang concerning cohomology annihilators of commutative rings, and also results of Aihara and Takahashi, Keller and Van den Bergh, and Rouquier on strong finite generation of the corresponding bounded derived category, are generalized to cover excellent …
Let \frak a be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring R and M a finitely generated R-module. It is shown that {\rm Ann}_R(H_{\frak a}^{{\dim M}({\frak a}, M)}(M))= {\rm Ann}_R(M/T_R({\frak a}, M)), where T_R({\frak a}, M) is the largest submodule of M such that {\rm cd}({\frak a}, T_R({\frak a}, M))< {\rm cd}({\frak a}, M). Several applications of this result are given. Among other things, it is shown that there exists an ideal \frak b of R such that {\rm Ann}_R(H_{\frak a}^{\dim M}(M))={\rm Ann}_R(M/H_{\frak b}^{0}(M)). Using this, we show that if H_{\frak a}^{\dim R}(R)=0, then {\rm Att}_…
In this article we investigate the fibers of relative $D$-modules. In general we prove that there exists an open, Zariski dense subset of the vanishing set of the annihilator over which the fibers of a cyclic relative $D$-module are non-zero. Next we restrict our attention to relatively holonomic $D$-modules. For this class we prove that the fiber over every point in the vanishing set of the annihilator is non-zero. As a consequence we obtain new proofs of a conjecture of Budur which was recently proven by Budur, van der Veer, Wu and Zhou, as well as a new proof of a theorem of Maisonobe. More…
Let $R=\mathbb{C}[\{x_{ij}\}]$ be the ring of polynomial functions in $mn$ variables where $m> n$. Set $X$ to be the $m\times n$ matrix in these variables and $I:=I_n(X)$ the ideal of maximal minors of $X$. We consider the rings $R/I^t$; for $t\gg 0$ the depth of $R/I^t$ is equal to $n^2-1$, and we show that each local cohomology module $H^{n^2-1}_{\frak{m}}(R/I^t)$ is a cyclic $R$-module. We also compute the annihilator of $H^{n^2-1}_{\frak{m}}(R/I^t)$ thereby completely determining its $R$-module structure. In the case that $X$ is a $n\times (n-1)$ matrix we describe a map between the Koszul…
We study the deformation-obstruction theory of Koszul cohomology groups of $g^r_d$'s on singular nodal curves. We compute the obstruction classes for Koszul cohomology classes on singular curves to deform to a smooth one. In the case the obstructions are nontrivial, we obtain some partial results for generic vanishing of Koszul cohomology groups.
Let $(R, \frak m)$ be a local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. It is shown that if $M$ is relative Cohen-Macaulay with respect to an ideal $\frak a$ of $R$, then $\text{Ann}_R(H_{\mathfrak{a}}^{\text{cd}(\mathfrak{a}, M)}(M))=\text{Ann}_RM/L=\text{Ann}_RM$ and $\text{Ass}_R(R/\text{Ann}_RM)\subseteq \{\mathfrak{p} \in \text{Ass}_R M|\,{\rm cd}(\mathfrak{a}, R/\mathfrak{p})=\text{cd}(\mathfrak{a}, M)\},$ where $L$ is the largest submodule of $M$ such that ${\rm cd}(\mathfrak{a}, L)< {\rm cd}(\mathfrak{a}, M)$. We also show that if $H^{\dim M}_{\mathfrak{a}}(M)=0$, then $\text{Att}_…
Let $R$ be a noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, and $M$ an $R$--module. We prove that for a finite module $M$, if $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is minimax for all $i\geq r\geq 1$, then $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is artinian for $i\geq r$. A Local-global Principle for minimax local cohomology modules is shown. If $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is coatomic for $i\leq r$ ($M$ finite) then $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is finite for $i\leq r$. We give conditions for a module, which is locally minimax to be a minimax module. A non-vanishing theorem and some vanishing theorems are proved for local cohomology modules.
Define a line bundle L on a projective variety to be q-ample, for a natural number q, if tensoring with high powers of L kills coherent sheaf cohomology above dimension q. Thus 0-ampleness is the usual notion of ampleness. Intuitively, a line bundle is q-ample if it is positive "in all but at most q directions". We show that q-ampleness of a line bundle on a projective variety in characteristic zero is equivalent to the vanishing of an explicit finite list of cohomology groups. It follows that q-ampleness is a Zariski open condition, which is not clear from the definition. We also show that a …
Let $X$ be a closed equidimensional local complete intersection subscheme of a smooth projective scheme $Y$ over a field, and let $X_t$ denote the $t$-th thickening of $X$ in $Y$. Fix an ample line bundle $\mathcal{O}_Y(1)$ on $Y$. We prove the following asymptotic formulation of the Kodaira vanishing theorem: there exists an integer $c$, such that for all integers $t \geqslant 1$, the cohomology group $H^k(X_t,\mathcal{O}_{X_t}(j))$ vanishes for $k < \dim X$ and $j < -ct$. Note that there are no restrictions on the characteristic of the field, or on the singular locus of $X$. We also construc…
Let $\mathfrak a$ denote an ideal of a local ring $(R, \mathfrak m).$ Let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module. There is a systematic study of the formal cohomology modules $\varprojlim \HH^i(M/\mathfrak a^nM), i \in \mathbb Z.$ We analyze their $R$-module structure, the upper and lower vanishing and non-vanishing in terms of intrinsic data of $M,$ and its functorial behavior. These cohomology modules occur in relation to the formal completion of the punctured spectrum $\Spec R \setminus V(\mathfrak m).$ As a new cohomological data there is a description on the formal grade $\fgrade(\mathfra…
Using the theory of cohomology annihilators, we define a family of topologies on the set of isomorphism classes of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein ring. We study compactness of these topologies.
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$ and $M,N$ finite $R$--modules. We prove that the following statements are equivalent. \begin{enumerate} \item[(i)] $\lc^{i}_{\fa}(M,N)$ is finite for all $i< n$. \item[(ii)] $\Coass_R(\lc^{i}_{\fa}(M,N)) \subset \V{(\fa)}$ for all $i< n$. \item[(iii)] $\lc^{i}_{\fa}(M,N)$ is coatomic for all $i< n$. \end{enumerate} If $\pd M$ is finite and $r$ be a non-negative integer such that $r>\pd M$ and $\lc^{i}_{\fa}(M,N)$ is finite (resp. minimax) for all $i\geq r$, then $\lc^{i}_{\fa}(M,N)$ is zero (resp. artinian) for all $i\geq r$.

The aim of this paper is to extend the main result of C. Huneke and G. Lyubeznik in [Adv. Math. 210 (2007), 498--504] to the class of rings that are images of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Namely, let $R$ be a local Noetherian domain of positive characteristic that is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that all local cohomology of $R$ (below the dimension) maps to zero in a finite extension of the ring. As a direct consequence we obtain that the absolute integral closure of $R$ is a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. Since every excellent local ring is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local …
In this paper, some results on vanishing and non-vanishing of generalized local cohomology modules are presented and some relations between those modules and, Ext and ordinary local cohomology modules are studied. Also, several cofiniteness propositions for generalized local cohomology modules are established which, among other things, provide an alternative answer to a question in [Y2].
For a finite module $M$ over a local, equicharacteristic ring $(R,m)$, we show that the well-known formula $\cohdim(m,M)=\dim M$ becomes trivial if ones uses Matlis duals of local cohomology modules together with spectral sequences. We also prove a new, ring-theoretic vanishing criterion for local cohomology modules.
It is proved that if one of the finite modules M and N, over a local ring R, has reducible complexity and has finite Gorenstein dimension then the depth formula holds, provided TorR_i(M,N) = 0 for i>>0. We also study the vanishing of cohomology of a module of finite complete intersection dimension.
Let R be a complete intersection ring and let M and N be R-modules. It is shown that the vanishing of Ext^i_R(M,N) for a certain number of consecutive values of i starting at n forces the complete intersection dimension of M to be at most n-1. We also estimate the complete intersection dimension of the dual of M, in terms of vanishing of the cohomology modules, Ext^i_R(M,N).
We examine local cohomology in the setting of valuation rings. The novelty of this investigation stems from the fact that valuation rings are usually non-Noetherian, whereas local cohomology has been extensively developed mostly in a Noetherian setting. We prove various vanishing results on local cohomology for valuation rings of finite Krull dimension. These vanishing results stem from a uniform bound on the global dimension of such rings. Our investigation reveals differences in the sheaf theoretic definition of local cohomology, and the algebraic definition in terms of a limit of certain Ex…
We investigate symmetry in the vanishing of Tate cohomology for finitely generated modules over local Gorenstein rings. For finitely generated R-modules M and N over Gorenstein local ring R, it is shown that $\widehat{Ext}^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all $i\in\mathbb{Z}$ if and only if $\widehat{Ext}^i_R(N,M)=0$ for all $i\in\mathbb{Z}$.
We generalize some known results on the relation between the cohomological and projective dimension. Then we examine the set-theoretically Cohen-Macaulay ideals to find some cohomological characterization of these kind of ideals.
We prove that if M, N are finite modules over a Gorenstein local ring R of codimension at most 4, then the vanishing of Ext^n_R(M,N) for n\gg 0 is equivalent to the vanishing of Ext^n_R(N,M) for n\gg 0. Furthermore, if the completion of $R$ has no embedded deformation, then such vanishing occurs if and only if M or N has finite projective dimension.
Comparing vanishing of local cohomology in zero and positive characteristic, we give an example of a D-module on a Grassmann variety in positive characteristic with non-vanishing first cohomology group. This is a counterexample to D-affinity and the Beilinson-Bernstein equivalence for flag manifolds in positive characteristic.
Let $R=k[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a ring of polynomials over a field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. There is an algorithm due to Lyubeznik for deciding the vanishing of local cohomology modules $H^i_I(R)$ where $I\subset R$ is an ideal. This algorithm has not been implemented because its complexity grows very rapidly with the growth of $p$ which makes it impractical. In this paper we produce a modification of this algorithm that consumes a modest amount of memory.
Let $\fa$ denote an ideal of a $d$-dimensional Gorenstein local ring $R$ and $M$ and $N$ two finitely generated $R$-modules with $\pd M< \infty$. It is shown that $H^d_{\fa}(M,N)=0$ if and only if $\dim \hat{R}\big/ \fa\hat{R}+\fp>0$ for all $\fp\in\Ass_{\hat{R}}\hat{M}\cap\Supp_{\hat{R}}\hat{N}$.
A 2003 counterexample to a conjecture of Auslander brought attention to a family of rings - colloquially called AC rings - that satisfy a natural condition on vanishing of cohomology. Several results attest to the remarkable homological properties of AC rings, but their definition is barely operational, and it remains unknown if they form a class that is closed under typical constructions in ring theory. In this paper, we study transfer of the AC property along local homomorphisms of Cohen--Macaulay rings. In particular, we show that the AC property is preserved by standard procedures in local…
Let $(R,\fr m)$ be a Noetherian local ring, $I$ an ideal of $R$ and $M, N$ two finitely generated $R$-modules. The first result of this paper is to prove a vanishing theorem for generalized local cohomology modules which says that $H^j_I(M,N)=0$ for all $j>\dim(R)$, provided $M$ is of finite projective dimension. Next, we study and give characterizations for the least and the last integer $r$ such that $\Supp(H^r_I(M,N))$ is infinite.
Let R be a (not necessarily local) Noetherian ring and M a finitely generated R-module of finite dimension d. Let \fa be an ideal of R and \fM denote the intersection of all prime ideals \fp in Supp_RH^d_{\fa}(M). It is shown that H^d_{\fa}(M)\simeq H^d_{\fM}(M)/\displaystyle{\sum_{n\in \mathbb{N}}}<\fM>(0:_{H^d_{\fM}(M)}\fa^n), where for an Artinian R-module A we put <\fM>A=\cap_{n\in \mathbb{N}} \fM^nA. As a consequence, it is proved that for all ideals \fa of R, there are only finitely many non-isomorphic top local cohomology modules H^d_{\fa}(M) having the same support. In addition, we est…
In this paper, we prove some well-known results on local cohomology with respect to a pair of ideals in graded version, such as, Independence Theorem, Lichtenbaum-Harshorne Vanishing Theorem, Basic Finiteness and Vanishing Theorem, among others. Besides, we present a generalized version of Melkersson Theorem about Artinianess of modules and a result concerning Artinianess of local cohomology modules.
Auslander conjectured that every Artin algebra satisfies a certain condition on vanishing of cohomology of finitely generated modules. The failure of this conjecture - by a 2003 counterexample due to Jorgensen and Sega - motivates the consideration of the class of rings that do satisfy Auslander's condition. We call them AC rings and show that an AC Artin algebra that is left-Gorenstein is also right-Gorenstein. Furthermore, the Auslander-Reiten Conjecture is proved for AC rings, and Auslander's G-dimension is shown to be functorial for AC rings that are commutative or have a dualizing complex…
Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over a field $k$, with irrelevant maximal ideal $\fm$, and $I$ a homogeneous $R$-ideal. We study the asymptotic vanishing behavior of the graded components of the local cohomology modules $\{\HH{i}{\fm}{R/I^n}\}_{n\in \NN}$ for $i<\dim R/I$. We show that, when $\chara k= 0$, $R/I$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $I$ is a complete intersection locally on $\Spec R \setminus\{\fm\}$, the lowest degrees of the modules $\{\HH{i}{\fm}{R/I^n}\}_{n\in \NN}$ are bounded by a linear function whose slope is controlled by the generating degrees of the dual of $I/I^2$. Our resul…
