In this article we investigate the fibers of relative $D$-modules. In general we prove that there exists an open, Zariski dense subset of the vanishing set of the annihilator over which the fibers of a cyclic relative $D$-module are non-zero. Next we restrict our attention to relatively holonomic $D$-modules. For this class we prove that the fiber over every point in the vanishing set of the annihilator is non-zero. As a consequence we obtain new proofs of a conjecture of Budur which was recently proven by Budur, van der Veer, Wu and Zhou, as well as a new proof of a theorem of Maisonobe. Moreover, we also obtain a diagonal specialization result for Bernstein-Sato ideals.
In this paper we study the finitely generated bigraded modules over a standard bigraded polynomial ring which are relative Cohen-Macaulay or relative unmixed with respect to one of the irrelevant bigraded ideals. A generalization of Reisner's criterion for Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes is considered.

Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring, a a proper ideal of R and M a finite R-module. It is shown that, if (R;m) is a complete local ring, then under certain conditions a contains a regular element on DR(Hc a(M)), where c = cd(a;M). A non-zerodivisor characterization of relative Cohen-Macaulay modules w.r.t a is given. We introduce the concept of relative Cohen-Macaulay filtered modules w.r.t a and study some basic properties of such modules. In paticular, we provide a non-zerodivisor characterization of relative Cohen-Macaulay filtered modules w.r.t a. Furthermore, a characterization of coho…
Let $(R, \mf, k_R)$ be regular local $k$-algebra satisfying the weak Jacobian criterion, such that $k_R/k$ is an algebraic field extension. Let $D_R$ be the ring of $k$-linear differential operators of $R$. We give an explicit decomposition of the $D_R$-module $D_R/D_R \mf_R^{n+1}$ as a direct sum of simple modules, all isomorphic to $D_R/D_R \mf$, where certain "Pochhammer" differential operators are used to describe generators of the simple components.
We compare and contrast various relative cohomology theories that arise from resolutions involving semidualizing modules. We prove a general balance result for relative cohomology over a Cohen-Macaulay ring with a dualizing module, and we demonstrate the failure of the naive version of balance one might expect for these functors. We prove that the natural comparison morphisms between relative cohomology modules are isomorphisms in several cases, and we provide a Yoneda-type description of the first relative Ext functor. Finally, we show by example that each distinct relative cohomology constru…
The ideal transform of a graded module $M$ is known to compute the module of twisted global sections of the sheafification of $M$ over a relative projective space. We introduce a second description motivated by the relative BGG-correspondence. However, our approach avoids the full BGG-correspondence by replacing the Tate resolution with the computationally more efficient purely linear saturation and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity with the often enough much smaller linear regularity. This paper provides elementary, constructive, and unified proofs that these two descriptions compute the (tr…
For a polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$, we present a method to compute the characteristic cycle of the localization $R_f$ for any nonzero polynomial $f\in R$ that avoids a direct computation of $R_f$ as a $D$-module. Based on this approach, we develop an algorithm for computing the characteristic cycle of the local cohomology modules $H^r_I(R)$ for any ideal $I\subseteq R$ using the Čech complex. The algorithm, in particular, is useful for answering questions regarding vanishing of local cohomology modules and computing Lyubeznik numbers. These applications are illustrated by examples of com…
In this paper we study the local cohomology of all finitely generated bigraded modules over a standard bigraded polynomial ring which have only one nonvanishing local cohomology with respect to one of the irrelevant bigraded ideals.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $\mathfrak a$ and $\mathfrak b$ ideals of $R$. In this paper, we study the finiteness dimension $f_{\mathfrak a}(M)$ of $M$ relative to $\mathfrak a$ and the $\mathfrak b$-minimum $\mathfrak a$-adjusted depth $λ_{\mathfrak a}^{\mathfrak b}(M)$ of $M$, where the underlying module $M$ is relative Cohen-Macaulay w.r.t $\mathfrak a$. Some applications of such modules are given.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity (not necessarily local) and $\frak a$ a proper ideal of $R$. We study the invariance of some classes of $\frak a$-relative Cohen-Macaulay modules under pure ring homomorphisms and ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension. Our results extend several results in the existing literature on homological modules.
We employ the inductive structure of determinantal varieties to calculate the mixed Hodge module structure of local cohomology modules with determinantal support. We show that the weight of a simple composition factor is uniquely determined by its support and cohomological degree. As a consequence, we obtain the equivariant structure of the Hodge filtration on each local cohomology module. Finally, as an application, we provide a formula for the generation level of the Hodge filtration on these modules.
Let $M$ be an $R$-module over a Noetherian ring $R$ and $\mathfrak{a}$ be an ideal of $R$ with $c={\rm cd}(\mathfrak{a},M)$. First, we prove that $M$ is finite $\mathfrak{a}$-relative Cohen-Macaulay if and only if ${\rm H}_i(Λ_{\mathfrak{a}}({\rm H}_{\mathfrak{a}}^c(M)))=0$ for all $i\neq c$ and ${\rm H}_c(Λ_{\mathfrak{a}}({\rm H}_{\mathfrak{a}}^c(M))) \cong \widehat{M}^{\mathfrak{a}}$. Next, over an $\mathfrak{a}$-relative Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$, we provide a characterization of $\mathfrak{a}$-relative sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules $M$ in terms of $\mathfrak{a}$-re…
Several authors have introduced various type of coherent-like rings and proved analogous results on these rings. It appears that all these relative coherent rings and all the used techniques can be unified. In [2], several coherent-like rings are unified. In this manuscript we continue this work and we introduce coherent-like module which also emphasizes our point of view by unifying the existed relative coherent concepts. Several classical results are generalized and some new results are given.
We show that, over a local complete intersection, every possible variety is realized as the cohomological support variety of some module. Moreover, we show that the projective variety of a complete indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay module is connected.
We provide new results on the vanishing of local cohomology modules supported at ideals of minors of matrices over arbitrary commutative Noetherian rings. In the process, we compute the local cohomology of rings of polynomials with integer coefficients---supported at generic determinantal ideals---and also obtain results on F-modules and D-modules that are likely to be of independent interest.
This works concerns cohomological support varieties of modules over commutative local rings. The main result is that the support of a derived tensor product of a pair of differential graded modules over a Koszul complex is the join of the supports of the modules. This generalizes, and gives another proof of, a result of Dao and the third author dealing with Tor-independent modules over complete intersection rings. The result for Koszul complexes has a broader applicability, including to exterior algebras over local rings.
The support of any module over a commutative ring is defined as the collection of all prime ideals of the ring at which the localization of the module is non-zero. For finitely generated modules, the support is the collection of all prime ideals containing the annihilator of the module. In this article, we raise the natural question that over which commutative rings, the support of every module is the collection of all the prime ideals of its annihilator. We completely classify such rings, and in the process it also comes out that it is enough to require that only for countably generated modul…

Let $R_0$ be any domain, let $R=R_0[U_1, ..., U_s]/I$, where $U_1, ..., U_s$ are indeterminates of some positive degrees, and $I\subset R_0[U_1, ..., U_s]$ is a homogeneous ideal. The main theorem in this paper is states that all the associated primes of $H:=H^s_{R_+}(R)$ contain a certain non-zero ideal $c(I)$ of $R_0$ called the ``content'' of $I$. It follows that the support of $H$ is simply $V(\content(I)R + R_+)$ (Corollary 1.8) and, in particular, $H$ vanishes if and only if $c(I)$ is the unit ideal. These results raise the question of whether local cohomology modules have finitely many …
We consider relative Tor functors built from resolutions described by a semidualizing module C over a commutative noetherian ring R. We show that the bifunctors Tor^{F_CM}_i (-,-) and Tor^{P_CM}_i (-,-), defined using flat-like and projective-like resolutions, are isomorphic. We show how the vanishing of these functors characterizes the finiteness of the homological dimension F_C-pd, and we use this to give a relation between the F_C-pd of a given module and that of a pure submodule. On the other hand, we show that other relations that one may expect to hold similarly, fail in general. In fact…
The study of Chow varieties of decomposable forms lies at the confluence of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, representation theory and combinatorics. There are many open questions about homological properties of Chow varieties and interesting classes of modules supported on them. The goal of this note is to survey some fundamental constructions and properties of these objects, and to propose some new directions of research. Our main focus will be on the study of certain maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of covariants supported on Chow varieties, and on defining equations and syzygies. We …
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring and let $\fa$ be a proper ideal of $R$. A non-zero finitely generated $R$-module $M$ is called relative Cohen-Macaulay with respect to $\fa$ if there is precisely one non vanishing local cohomology modules $\H_{\fa}^{i}(M)$ of $M$. In this paper, as a main result, it is shown that if $M$ is a Gorenstein $R$--module, then $\H_{\fa}^{i}(M)=0$ for all $i\neq c$ where $c=\h_{M}\fa$ is completely encoded in homological properties of $\H_{\fa}^{c}(M)$, in particular in its Bass numbers. Notice that, this result provides a generalization of a result of M…

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity and $C$ a semidualizing module for $R$. Let $\mathscr{P}_C(R)$ and $\mathscr{I}_C (R)$ denote, respectively, the classes of $C$-projective and $C$-injective $R$-modules. We show that their induced Ext bifunctors $\text{Ext}^i_{\mathscr{P}_C}(-,\sim)$ and $\text{Ext}^i_{\mathscr{I}_C}(-,\sim)$ coincide for all $i\geq 0$ if and only if $C$ is projective. Also, we provide some other criteria for $C$ to be projective by using some special cotorsion theories.
We describe the support of $F$-finite $F$-modules over polynomial rings $R$ of prime characteristic. Our description yields an algorithm to compute the support of such modules; the complexity of our algorithm is also analyzed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first algorithm to avoid extensive use of Gröbner bases and hence of substantial practical value. We also use the idea behind this algorithm to prove that the support of $H^j_I(S)$ is Zariski closed for each ideal $I$ of $S$ where $R$ is noetherian commutative ring of prime characteristic with finitely many isolated singular poin…
In their investigation of horizontal linkage of modules of finite Gorenstein dimension over a commutative, Noetherian, semiperfect (e.g., local) ring, Dibaei and Sadeghi introduced the class of reduced G-perfect modules, making use of Bass' concept of reduced grade. A few years later, the same authors extended this class by considering the relative property of reduced G$_C$-perfection, where $C$ is a semidualizing module, and studied linkage even further. In the present paper, we contribute to their theory and also generalize results of Auslander and Bridger as well as of Martsinkovsky and Str…
We investigate the analogy between squarefree Cohen-Macaulay modules supported on a graph and line bundles on a curve. We prove a Riemann-Roch theorem, we study the Jacobian and gonality of a graph, and we prove Clifford's theorem.
For a Noetherian ring $R$ and a cotilting $R$-module $T$ of injective dimension at least $1$, we prove that the derived dimension of $R$ with respect to the category $\mathcal{X}_T$ is precisely the injective dimension of $T$ by applying Auslander-Buchweitz theory and Ghost Lemma. In particular, when $R$ is a commutative Noetherian local ring with a canonical module $ω_R$ and $\dim R\ge1$, the derived dimension of R with respect to the category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules is precisely $\dim R$.
H. Bass defined orthogonal transvection group of an orthogonal module and elementary orthogonal transvection group of an orthogonal module with a hyperbolic direct summand. We also have the notion of relative orthogonal transvection group and relative elementary orthogonal transvection group with respect to an ideal of the ring. According to the definition of Bass relative elementary orthogonal transvection group is a subgroup of relative orthogonal transvection group of an orthogonal module with hyperbolic direct summand. Here we show that these two groups are the same in the case when the or…
Let a be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring R with identity. We study finitely generated R-modules M whose a-finiteness and a-cohomological dimensions are equal. In particular, we examine relative analogues of quasi-Buchsbaum, Buchsbaum and surjective Buchsbaum modules. We reveal several interactions between these types of modules that extend some of the existing results in the classical theory to the relative one.
Let $(R,\m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R-$module with $\dim M=d.$ This paper is concerned with the following property for the top local cohomology module $H^d_\m(M)$: $$\Ann (0:_{H^d_\m(M)}\p)=\p\ \text{for all prime ideals} \p\supseteq\Ann H^d_\m(M).$$ In this paper we will show that this property is equivalent to the catenaricity of the unmixed support $\Usupp M$ of $M$ which is defined by $\Usupp M=\Supp M/U_M(0)$, where $U_M(0)$ is the largest submodule of $M$ of dimension less than $d.$ Some characterizations of this property in terms of system of parameters…
We compute support of formal cohomology modules in a serial of non-trivial cases. Applications are given. For example, we compute injective dimension of certain local cohomology modules in terms of dimension of their's support.
Let $(R,\m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module with $\dim M=d.$ Let $i\geq 0$ be an integer. Following M. Brodmann and R. Y. Sharp \cite{BS1}, the $i$-th pseudo support of $M$ is the set of all prime ideals $\p$ of $R$ such that $ H^{i-\dim (R/\p)}_{\p R_{\p}}(M_{\p})\neq 0.$ In this paper, we study the pseudo supports and the non Cohen-Macaulay locus of $M$ in connections with the catenarity of the ring $R/\Ann_RM$, the Serre conditions on $M$, and the unmixedness of the local rings $R/\p$ for certain prime ideals $\p$ in $\Supp_R (M)$.
A cohomological support, Supp_A(M), is defined for finitely generated modules M over an left noetherian ring R, with respect to a ring A of central cohomology operations on the derived category of R-modules. It is proved that if the A-module Ext^R(M,M) is noetherian and Ext_i^R(M,R)=0 for i>>0, then every closed subset of Supp_A(M) is the support of some finitely generated R-module. This theorem specializes to known realizability results for varieties of modules over group algebras, over local complete intersections, and over finite dimensional algebras over a field. The theorem is also used t…
We describe "quasi canonical modules" for modular invariant rings $R$ of finite group actions on factorial Gorenstein domains. From this we derive a general "quasi Gorenstein criterion" in terms of certain 1-cocycles. This generalizes a recent result of A. Braun for linear group actions on polynomial rings, which itself generalizes a classical result of Watanabe for non-modular invariant rings. We use an explicit classification of all reflexive rank one $R$-modules, which is given in terms of the class group of $R$, or in terms of $R$-semi-invariants. This result is implicitly contained in a p…
Let $(R,\fr m)$ be a Noetherian local ring, $I$ an ideal of $R$ and $M, N$ two finitely generated $R$-modules. The first result of this paper is to prove a vanishing theorem for generalized local cohomology modules which says that $H^j_I(M,N)=0$ for all $j>\dim(R)$, provided $M$ is of finite projective dimension. Next, we study and give characterizations for the least and the last integer $r$ such that $\Supp(H^r_I(M,N))$ is infinite.
For a commutative noetherian ring A, we compare the support of a complex of A-modules with the support of its cohomology. This leads to a classification of all full subcategories of A-modules which are thick (that is, closed under taking kernels, cokernels, and extensions) and closed under taking direct sums.
A "squarefree module" over a polynomial ring $S = k[x_1, .., x_n]$ is a generalization of a Stanley-Reisner ring, and allows us to apply homological methods to the study of monomial ideals systematically. Let $Sq$ be the category of squarefree modules. Then the derived category $D^b(Sq)$ of $Sq$ has three duality functors which act on $D^b(Sq)$ just like three transpositions of the symmetric group $S_3$ (up to translation). This phenomenon is closely related to the Koszul dulaity (in particular, the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand correspondence). We also study the local cohomology module $H_{I_Δ}…
