Using symmetric algebras we simplify (and slightly strengthen) the Bruns-Eisenbud-Evans "generalized principal ideal theorem" on the height of order ideals of non-minimal generators in a module. We also obtain a simple proof and an extension of a result by Kwieciński, which estimates the height of certain Fitting ideals of modules having an equidimensional symmetric algebra.
In this paper we give versions of Hilbert's syzygy theorem for finitely generated modules over polynomial rings over direct product of principal ideal rings.
Let R be a commutative ring with unity $1\in R$. In this article, we introduce the concept of prime principal right ideal rings (\textbf{PPRIR}), A prime ideal P of R is said to be prime principal right ideal (\textbf{PPRI}) is given by $P =\{ ar : r\in R\}$ for some element a. The ring R is said to be prime principal right ideal ring (\textbf{PPRIR}) if every prime ideal of R is a prime principal right ideal (\textbf{PPRI}). A prime principal right ideal ring R is called a prime principal right ideal domain (\textbf{PPRID}) if R is a domain. Several properties and characteristics of prime pri…
We study the relationship between depth and regularity of a homogeneous ideal I and those of (I,f) and I:f, where f is a linear form or a monomial. Our results has several interesting consequences on depth and regularity of edge ideals of hypegraphs and of powers of ideals.
In this article we study two classes of integral domains. The first is characterized by having a finite intersection of principal ideals being finitely generated only when it is principal. The second class consists of the integral domains in which a finite intersection of principal ideals is always non-finitely generated except in the case of containment of one of the principal ideals in all the others. We relate these classes to many well-studied classes of integral domains, to star operations and to classical and new ring constructions.
Let $P$ be a finitely generated ideal of a commutative ring $R$. Krull's Principal Ideal Theorem states that if $R$ is Noetherian and $P$ is minimal over a principal ideal of $R$, then $P$ has height at most one. Straightforward examples show that this assertion fails if $R$ is not Noetherian. We consider what can be asserted in the non-Noetherian case in place of Krull's theorem.
An equigenerated monomial ideal $I$ is a Freiman ideal if $μ(I^2)=\ell(I)μ(I)-{\ell(I)\choose 2}$ where $\ell(I)$ is the analytic spread of $I$ and $μ(I)$ is the least number of monomial generators of $I$. Freiman ideals are special since there exists an exact formula computing the least number of monomial generators of any of their powers. In this paper we give a complete classification of Freiman $t$-spread principal Borel ideals.
We prove that $t$-spread principal Borel ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and study their powers. We show that these ideals possess the strong persistence property and compute their limit depth.
Let $R$ be a commutative $G$-graded ring with a nonzero unity. In this article, we introduce the concept of graded radically principal ideals. A graded ideal $I$ of $R$ is said to be graded radically principal if $Grad(I)=Grad(\langle c\rangle)$ for some homogeneous $c\in R$, where $Grad(I)$ is the graded radical of $I$. The graded ring $R$ is said to be graded radically principal if every graded ideal of $R$ is graded radically principal. We study graded radically principal rings. We prove an analogue of the Cohen theorem, in the graded case, precisely, a graded ring is graded radically princ…
For a Dedekind domain $D$, let $\mathcal{P}(D)$ be the set of ideals of $D$ that are radical of a principal ideal. We show that, if $D,D'$ are Dedekind domains and there is an order isomorphism between $\mathcal{P}(D)$ and $\mathcal{P}(D')$, then the rank of the class groups of $D$ and $D'$ is the same.
In 2008 N.~Q.~Chinh and P.~H.~Nam characterized principal ideal domains as integral domains that satisfy the follo\-wing two conditions: (i) they are unique factorization domains, and (ii) all maximal ideals in them are principal. We improve their result by giving a characterization in which each of these two conditions is weakened. At the same time we improve a theorem by P.~M.~Cohn which characterizes principal ideal domains as atomic Bézout domains. We will also show that every PC domain is AP and that the notion of PC domains is incomparable with the notion of pre-Schreier domains (hence w…
We give a lower bound on the Hilbert series of the exterior algebra modulo a principal ideal generated by a generic form of odd degree and disprove a conjecture by Moreno-Socías and Snellman. We also show that the lower bound is equal to the minimal Hilbert series in some specific cases.
Fix a poset $Q$ on $\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$. A $Q$-Borel monomial ideal $I \subseteq \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ is a monomial ideal whose monomials are closed under the Borel-like moves induced by $Q$. A monomial ideal $I$ is a principal $Q$-Borel ideal, denoted $I=Q(m)$, if there is a monomial $m$ such that all the minimal generators of $I$ can be obtained via $Q$-Borel moves from $m$. In this paper we study powers of principal $Q$-Borel ideals. Among our results, we show that all powers of $Q(m)$ agree with their symbolic powers, and that the ideal $Q(m)$ satisfies the persistence property for …
We construct explicitly a resolution of a fan algebra of principal ideals over a Noetherian ring for the case when the fan is a proper rational cone in the plane. Under some mild conditions on the initial data, we show that this resolution is minimal.
Fix a square-free monomial $m \in S = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. The square-free principal Borel ideal generated by $m$, denoted ${\rm sfBorel}(m)$, is the ideal generated by all the square-free monomials that can be obtained via Borel moves from the monomial $m$. We give upper and lower bounds for the Waldschmidt constant of ${\rm sfBorel}(m)$ in terms of the support of $m$, and in some cases, exact values. For any rational $\frac{a}{b} \geq 1$, we show that there exists a square-free principal Borel ideal with Waldschmidt constant equal to $\frac{a}{b}$.
We study pairs of finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain and their corresponding matrix representations. We introduce equivalence relations for such pairs and determine invariants and canonical forms.
Given a square matrix $A$ with entries in a commutative ring $S$, the ideal of $S[X]$ consisting of polynomials $f$ with $f(A) =0$ is called the null ideal of $A$. Very little is known about null ideals of matrices over general commutative rings. We compute a generating set of the null ideal of a matrix in case $S = D/dD$ is the residue class ring of a principal ideal domain $D$ modulo $d\in D$. We discuss two applications. At first, we compute a decomposition of the $S$-module $S[A]$ into cyclic $S$-modules and explain the strong relationship between this decomposition and the determined gene…
When $R$ is a Noetherian ring and we have a family of ideals in which every ideal contains at least one nonzero divisor, then it is already known that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of these ideals is equal to a saturated ideal. In such a case to get the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra we only need to saturate the first syzygies of direct sum of this family of ideals. However, this fact is not true, when at least one of these ideals does not contain any nonzero divisor. In this paper we show that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of a family of ideals of a pol…
The literature in persistent homology often refers to a "structure theorem for finitely generated graded modules over a graded principal ideal domain". We clarify the nature of this structure theorem in this context.
We continue the study of intersection algebras $\mathcal B = \mathcal B_R(I, J)$ of two ideals $I, J$ in a commutative Noetherian ring $R$. In particular, we exploit the semigroup ring and toric structures in order to calculate various invariants of the intersection algebra when $R$ is a polynomial ring over a field and $I,J$ are principal monomial ideals. Specifically, we calculate the $F$-signature, divisor class group, and Hilbert-Samuel and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities, sometimes restricting to certain cases in order to obtain explicit formulæ. This provides a new class of rings where formu…
Given a square matrix $B$ over a principal ideal domain $D$ and an ideal $J$ of $D$, the $J$-ideal of $B$ consists of the polynomials $f\in D[X]$ such that all entries of $f(B)$ are in $J$. It has been shown that in order to determine all $J$-ideals of $B$ it suffices to compute a generating set of the $(p^t)$-ideal of $B$ for finitely many prime powers $p^t$. Moreover, it is known that $(p^t)$-ideals are generated by polynomials of the form $p^{t-s}ν_s$ where $ν_s$ is a monic polynomial of minimal degree in the $(p^s)$-ideal of $B$ for some $s\le t$. However, except for the case of diagonal m…
Let $F$ be a field, and let Zar$(F)$ be the space of valuation rings of $F$ with respect to the Zariski topology. We prove that if $X$ is a quasicompact set of rank one valuation rings in Zar$(F)$ whose maximal ideals do not intersect to $0$, then the intersection of the rings in $X$ is an integral domain with quotient field $F$ such that every finitely generated ideal is a principal ideal. To prove this result, we develop a duality between (a) quasicompact sets of rank one valuation rings whose maximal ideals do not intersect to $0$, and (b) one-dimensional Prüfer domains with nonzero Jacobso…
An integral domain is called atomic if every nonzero nonunit element factors into irreducibles. On the other hand, an integral domain is said to satisfy the ascending chain condition on principal ideals (ACCP) if every ascending chain of principal ideals terminates. It was asserted by Cohn back in the sixties that every atomic domain satisfies the ACCP, but such an assertion was refuted by Grams in the seventies with an explicit construction of a neat example. Still, atomic domains without the ACCP are notoriously elusive, and just a few classes have been found since Grams' first construction.…
We determine the metric dimension of the annihilating-ideal graph of a local finite commutative principal ring and a finite commutative principal ring with two maximal ideals. We also find the bounds for the metric dimension of the annihilating-ideal graph of an arbitrary finite commutative principal ring.
In this paper we investigate to what extent the results of Z. Wang and D. Daigle on nice derivations of the polynomial ring in three variables over a field k of characteristic zero extend to the polynomial ring over a PID R, containing the field of rational numbers. One of our results shows that the kernel of a nice derivation on the polynomial ring in four variables over k of rank at most three is a polynomial ring over k.
We show that the Specht ideal of a two-rowed partition is perfect over an arbitrary field, provided that the characteristic is either zero or bounded below by the size of the second row of the partition, and we show this lower bound is tight. We also establish perfection and other properties of certain variants of Specht ideals, and find a surprising connection to the weak Lefschetz property. Our results in particular give a self-contained proof of Cohen-Macaulayness of certain $h$-equals sets, a result previously obtained by Etingof-Gorsky-Losev over the complex numbers using rational Cheredn…
In this paper we present a new efficient variant to compute strong Gröbner basis over quotients of principal ideal domains. We show an easy lifting process which allows us to reduce one computation over the quotient $R/nR$ to two computations over $R/aR$ and $R/bR$ where $n = ab$ with coprime $a, b$. Possibly using available factorization algorithms we may thus recursively reduce some strong Gröbner basis computations to Gröbner basis computations over fields for prime factors of $n$, at least for squarefree $n$. Considering now a computation over $R/nR$ we can run a standard Gröbner basis alg…
We define the s-order principal component of the jets of a graph and give a description of the primary decomposition of its edge ideal in terms of the minimal vertex covers of the base graph. As an application, we show the s-order principal component of the jets of a cochordal graph is cochordal, and connect this to Froberg's theorem on the linear resolution of edge ideals of cochordal graphs. An appendix is provided describing some computations of jets in the computer algebra system Macaulay2.
A famous result due to I. M. Isaacs states that if a commutative ring $R$ has the property that every prime ideal is principal, then every ideal of $R$ is principal. This motivates ring theorists to study commutative rings for which every ideal is a direct sum of cyclically presented modules. In this paper, we study commutative rings whose ideals are direct sum of cyclically presented modules.
An integral domain $R$ is atomic if each nonzero nonunit of $R$ factors into irreducibles. In addition, an integral domain $R$ satisfies the ascending chain condition on principal ideals (ACCP) if every increasing sequence of principal ideals (under inclusion) becomes constant from one point on. Although it is not hard to verify that every integral domain satisfying ACCP is atomic, examples of atomic domains that do not satisfy ACCP are notoriously hard to construct. The first of such examples was constructed by A. Grams back in 1974. In this paper we delve into the class of atomic domains tha…
