Periods of abelian varieties

Eigenvalues of Frobenius Endomorphisms of Abelian varieties of low Dimension

In this paper we discuss multiplicative relations between eigenvalues of Frobenius endomorphism of abelian varieties of small dimension over finite fields.

Endomorphisms of abelian varieties, cyclotomic extensions and Lie algebras

We prove an analogue of the Tate conjecture on homomorphisms of abelian varieties over infinite cyclotomic extensions of finitely generated fields of characteristic zero.

Homomorphisms of abelian varieties over geometric fields of finite characteristic

We study analogues of Tate's conjecture on homomorphisms for abelian varieties when the ground field is finitely generated over an algebraic closure of a finite field. Our results cover the case of abelian varieties without nontrivial endomorphisms.

Anderson T-motives and abelian varieties with MIQF: results coming from an analogy

Analogy between Anderson T-motives and abelian varieties with multiplication by an imaginary quadratic field (MIQF) is a source of 2 results: 1. A description of abelian varieties with MIQF of dimension $r$ and signature $(n, r-n)$ in terms of "lattices" of dimension $r$ in $\Bbb C^n$; 2. A construction of exterior powers of abelian varieties with MIQF having $n=1$.

The Tate and Standard Conjectures for Certain Abelian Varieties

In two earlier articles, we proved that, if the Hodge conjecture is true for ALL CM abelian varieties over the complex numbers, then both the Tate conjecture and the standard conjectures are true for abelian varieties over finite fields. Here we rework the proofs so that they apply to a single abelian variety. As a consequence, we prove (unconditionally) that the Tate and standard conjectures are true for many abelian varieties over finite fields, including abelian varieties for which the algebra of Tate classes is not generated by divisor classes.

Torsion codimension 2 cycles on supersingular abelian varieties

We prove that torsion codimension 2 algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on supersingular abelian varieties are algebraically equivalent to zero. As a consequence, we prove that homological equivalence coincides with algebraic equivalence for algebraic cycles of codimension 2 on supersingular abelian varieties over the algebraic closure of finite fields.

Arithmetic and dynamical degrees of self-morphisms of semi-abelian varieties

We prove a conjecture by Kawaguchi-Silverman on arithmetic and dynamical degrees, for self-morphisms of semi-abelian varieties. Moreover, we determine the set of the arithmetic degrees of orbits and the (first) dynamical degrees of self-morphisms of semi-abelian varieties.

Polarizations on abelian varieties

The results in this paper imply that for every number field F and positive integer r, there exists an F-isogeny class of abelian varieties such that r divides the degree of every F-polarization on every abelian variety in the isogeny class.

Quaternionic Darmon points on p-adic tori and abelian varieties

We prove formulas for the p-adic logarithm of quaternionic Darmon points on p-adic tori and modular abelian varieties over Q having purely multiplicative reduction at p. These formulas are amenable to explicit computations and are the first to treat Stark-Heegner type points on higher-dimensional abelian varieties.

The characteristic polynomials of abelian varieties of higher dimension over finite fields

The characteristic polynomials of abelian varieties over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with $q=p^n$ elements have a lot of arithmetic and geometric information. They have been explicitly described for abelian varieties up to dimension 4, but little is known in higher dimension. In this paper, among other things, we obtain the following three results on the characteristic polynomial of abelian varieties. First, we prove a relation between $n$ and $e$, where $e$ is a certain multiplicity associated with a simple abelian variety of arbitrary dimension over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Second, we explicitly …

On the Zilber-Pink conjecture for complex abelian varieties

In this article, we prove that the Zilber-Pink conjecture for abelian varieties over an arbitrary field of characteristic $0$ is implied by the same statement for abelian varieties over the algebraic numbers. More precisely, the conjecture holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the abelian variety $A$ if it holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the largest abelian subvariety of $A$ that is isomorphic to an abelian variety defined over $\bar{ \mathbb{Q}}$.

Abelian varieties are not quotients of low-dimension Jacobians

We prove that for any two integers $g\geq 4$ and $g'\leq 2g-1$, there exist abelian varieties over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ which are not quotients of a Jacobian of dimension $g'$. Our method in fact proves that most Abelian varieties satisfy this property, when counting by height relative to a fixed finite map to projective space.

p-adic height pairings on abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction

We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.

Hodge classes on abelian varieties

We prove, following Deligne and André, that the Hodge classes on abelian varieties of CM-type can be expressed in terms of divisor classes and split Weil classes, and we describe some consequences. In particular, we show that Grothendieck's standard conjecture of Lefschetz type implies the Hodge conjecture for abelian varieties (Abdulali, André, ...).

On the $\ell$-adic Galois representations attached to nonsimple abelian varieties

We study Galois representations attached to nonsimple abelian varieties over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. We give sufficient conditions for such representations to decompose as a product, and apply them to prove arithmetical analogues of results shown by Moonen and Zarhin in the context of complex abelian varieties (of dimension at most 5).

Product Formulas for Periods of CM Abelian Varieties and the Function Field Analog

We survey Colmez's theory and conjecture about the Faltings height and a product formula for the periods of abelian varieties with complex multiplication, along with the function field analog developed by the authors. In this analog, abelian varieties are replaced by Drinfeld modules and $A$-motives. We also explain the necessary background on abelian varieties, Drinfeld modules and $A$-motives, including their cohomology theories and comparison isomorphisms and their theory of complex multiplication.

A Note on the Specialization Theorem for Families of Abelian Varieties

In this note, we apply Moriwaki's arithmetic height functions to obtain an analogue of Silverman's Specialization Theorem for families of Abelian varieties over $K$, where $K$ is any field finitely generated over ${\Q}$.

Abelian varieties over fields of finite characteristic

The aim of this paper is to extend our old results about Galois action on the torsion points of abelian varieties to the case of (finitely generated) fields of characteristic 2.

Extensions of abelian varieties defined over a number field

We study the arithmetic aspects of the finite group of extensions of abelian varieties defined over a number field. In particular, we establish relations with special values of L-functions and congruences between modular forms.

Degeneracy loci in the universal family of abelian varieties

Recent developments on the uniformity of the number of rational points on curves and subvarieties in a moving abelian variety rely on the geometric concept of the degeneracy locus. The first-named author investigated the degeneracy locus in certain mixed Shimura varieties. In this expository note we revisit some of these results while minimizing the use of mixed Shimura varieties while working in a family of principally polarized abelian varieties. We also explain their relevance for applications in diophantine geometry.

A short guide to p-torsion of abelian varieties in characteristic p

There are many equivalent ways to describe the p-torsion of a principally polarized abelian variety in characteristic p. We briefly explain these methods and then illustrate them for abelian varieties A of arbitrary dimension g in several important cases, including when A has p-rank f and a-number 1 and when A has p-rank f and a-number g-f. We provide complete tables for abelian varieties of dimension up to four.

Filtered F-crystals on Shimura varieties of abelian type

In this paper, we define and construct canonical filtered $F$-crystals with $G$-structure over the integral models for Shimura varieties of abelian type at hyperspecial level defined by Kisin. We check that these are related by $p$-adic comparison theorems to the usual lisse sheaves, and as an application we also use this to show that the Galois representations generated from the $p$-adic étale cohomology of Shimura varieties with nontrivial coefficient sheaves are crystalline, at least in the case of proper abelian type Shimura varieties.

Counting the number of the twists of certain polarized abelian varieties

We count the number of isomorphism classes of degree $d$-twists of some polarized abelian varieties over finite fields of odd prime dimension. This can be seen as a higher dimensional analogue of the counting problem for elliptic curves case.

Rank one Eisenstein cohomology of local systems on the moduli space of abelian varieties

We give a formula for the Eisenstein cohomology of local systems on the partial compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties given by rank 1 degenerations. For genus 2 we give a formula for the full Eisenstein cohomology.

On CM abelian varieties over imaginary quadratic fields

In this paper, we associate canonically to every imaginary quadratic field $K=\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$ one or two isogenous classes of CM abelian varieties over $K$, depending on whether $D$ is odd or even ($D \ne 4$). These abelian varieties are characterized as of smallest dimension and smallest conductor, and such that the abelian varieties themselves descend to $\Bbb Q$. When $D$ is odd or divisible by 8, they are the `canonical' ones first studied by Gross and Rohrlich. We prove that these abelian varieties have the striking property that the vanishing order of their $L$-function at the center …

The field of moduli of quaternionic multiplication on abelian varieties

We consider principally polarized abelian varieties with quaternionic multiplication over number fields and we study the field of moduli of their endomorphisms in relation to the set of rational points on suitable Shimura varieties.

Mixed Ax-Schanuel for the universal abelian varieties and some applications

In this paper we prove the mixed Ax-Schanuel theorem for the universal abelian varieties (more generally any mixed Shimura variety of Kuga type), and give some simple applications. In particular we present an application to studying the generic rank of the Betti map.

Non-archimedean entire curves in closed subvarieties of semi-abelian varieties

We prove a non-archimedean analogue of the fact that a closed subvariety of a semi-abelian variety is hyperbolic modulo its special locus, and thereby generalize a result of Cherry.

A bound for the torsion on subvarieties of abelian varieties

We give a uniform bound on the degree of the maximal torsion cosets for subvarieties of an abelian variety. The proof combines algebraic interpolation and a theorem of Serre on homotheties in the Galois representation associated to the torsion subgroup of an abelian variety.

Remark on nondegeneracy of simple abelian varieties with many endomorphisms

We investigate a relationship between nondegeneracy of a simple abelian variety $A$ over an algebraic closure of $\mb{Q}$ and of its reduction $A_0$. We prove that under some assumptions, nondegeneracy of $A$ implies nondegeneracy of $A_0$.

Automorphism groups of simple polarized abelian varieties of odd prime dimension over finite fields

We prove that the automorphism groups of simple polarized abelian varieties of odd prime dimension over finite fields are cyclic, and give a complete list of finite groups that can be realized as such automorphism groups.

Grothendieck groups of categories of abelian varieties

We compute the Grothendieck group of the category of abelian varieties over an algebraically closed field $k$. We also compute the Grothendieck group of the category of $A$-isotypic abelian varieties, for any simple abelian variety $A$, assuming $k$ has characteristic 0, and for any elliptic curve $A$ in any characteristic.

Abelian varieties over finite fields as basic abelian varieties

In this note we show that any basic abelian variety with additional structures over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ is isogenous to another one defined over a finite field. We also show that the category of abelian varieties over finite fields up to isogeny can be embedded into the category of basic abelian varieties with suitable endomorphism structures. Using this connection, we derive a new mass formula for a finite orbit of polarized abelian surfaces over a finite field.

We prove control theorems for abelian varieties over function fields.

On the Mumford-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties with reduction conditions

We study monodromy action on abelian varieties satisfying certain bad reduction conditions. These conditions allow us to get some control over the Galois image. As a consequence we verify the Mumford--Tate conjecture for such abelian varieties.

Complete Description of Measures Corresponding to Abelian Varieties over Finite Fields

We study probability measures corresponding to families of abelian varieties over a finite field. These measures play an important role in the Tsfasman- Vladuts theory of asymptotic zeta-functions defining completely the limit zeta-function of the family. J.-P.Serre, using results of R.M.Robinson on conjugate algebraic integers, described the possible set of measures than can correspond to families of abelian varieties over a finite field. The problem whether all such measures actually occur was left open. Moreover, Serre supposed that not all such measures correspond to abelian varieties (for…

Class numbers of CM algebraic tori, CM abelian varieties and components of unitary Shimura varieties

We give a formula for the class number of an arbitrary CM algebraic torus over $\mathbb{Q}$. This is proved based on results of Ono and Shyr. As applications, we give formulas for numbers of polarized CM abelian varieties, of connected components of unitary Shimura varieties and of certain polarized abelian varieties over finite fields. We also give a second proof of our main result.

The rational points on certain Abelian varieties over function fields

In this paper, we consider Abelian varieties over function fields that arise as twists of Abelian varieties by cyclic covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. Then, in terms of Prym varieties associated to the cyclic covers, we prove a structure theorem on their Mordell-Weil group. Our results give an explicit method for construction of elliptic curves, hyper- and super-elliptic Jacobians that have large ranks over function fields of certain varieties.

Abelian varieties over finitely generated fields and the conjecture of Geyer and Jarden on torsion

In this paper we prove the Geyer-Jarden conjecture on the torsion part of the Mordell-Weil group for a large class of abelian varieties defined over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. The class consists of all abelian varieties with big monodromy, i.e., such that the image of Galois representation on l-torsion points, for almost all primes l, contains the full symplectic group.

Non-existence of certain CM abelian varieties with prime power torsion

In this paper, we study a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa, on the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of abelian varieties with constrained prime power torsion. Our result is related with abelian varieties which have complex multiplication over their fields of definition.

Simplicity of twists of abelian varieties

We give some easy necessary and sufficient criteria for twists of abelian varieties by Artin representations to be simple.

Isogeny orbits in a family of abelian varieties

We prove that if a curve of a non-isotrivial family of abelian varieties over a curve contains infinitely many isogeny orbits of a finitely generated subgroup of a simple abelian variety then it is special.

Almost ordinary abelian varieties over finite fields

We provide a characterization of almost ordinary abelian varieties over finite fields, and use this characterization to provide lower bounds for the sizes of some almost ordinary isogeny classes.

Modularity of abelian varieties over $\Q$ with bad reduction in one prime only

Superspecial abelian varieties over finite prime fields

In this paper we determine the number of isomorphism classes of superspecial abelian varieties $A$ over the prime field $\Fp$ such that the relative Frobenius morphism $π_A$ satisfying $π_A^2=-p$.

On some abelian varieties of type IV

We study a certain class of simple abelian varieties of type $\mathrm{IV}$ (in Albert's classification) over number fields with Mumford-Tate groups of type $A$. In particular, we show that such abelian varieties have ordinary reduction away from a set of places of Dirichlet density zero, thus confirming a special case of a broader conjecture of Serre's. We also study the splitting types and Newton polygons of the reductions of the abelian varieties of this type with small dimension (nine).

Abelian varieties with many endomorphisms and their absolutely simple factors

We characterize the abelian varieties arising as absolutely simple factors of GL2-type varieties over a number field k. In order to obtain this result, we study a wider class of abelian varieties: the k-varieties A/k satisfying that $\End_k^0(A)$ is a maximal subfield of $\End_k^0(A)$. We call them Ribet-Pyle varieties over k. We see that every Ribet-Pyle variety over k is isogenous over $\bar k$ to a power of an abelian k-variety and, conversely, that every abelian k-variety occurs as the absolutely simple factor of some Ribet-Pyle variety over k. We deduce from this correspondence a precise …
