We prove that the stable endomorphism algebra of a module without self-extensions over a special biserial algebra is a gentle algebra. In particular, it is again special biserial. As a consequence, any algebra which is derived equivalent to a gentle algebra is gentle.
We find a relationship between the global dimension of an algebra $A$ and the global dimension of the endomorphism algebra of a $τ$-tilting module, when $A$ is of finite global dimension. We show that, in general, the global dimension of the endomorphism algebra is not always finite. For monomial algebras and special biserial algebras of global dimension two, we prove that the global dimension of the endomorphism algebra of any $τ$-tilting module is always finite. Moreover, for special biserial algebras, we give an explicit bound.
Let $\k$ be an algebraically closed field, let $\A$ be a finite dimensional $\k$-algebra and let $V$ be a $\A$-module with stable endomorphism ring isomorphic to $\k$. If $\A$ is self-injective then $V$ has a universal deformation ring $R(\A,V)$, which is a complete local commutative Noetherian $\k$-algebra with residue field $\k$. Moreover, if $Λ$ is also a Frobenius $\k$-algebra then $R(\A,V)$ is stable under syzygies. We use these facts to determine the universal deformation rings of string $\Ar$-modules whose stable endomorphism ring isomorphic to $\k$, where $\Ar$ is a symmetric special b…
By a result claimed by Pogorzały selfinjective special biserial algebras can be stably equivalent only to stably biserial algebras and these two classes coincide. By an example of Ariki, Iijima and Park the classes of stably biserial and selfinjective special biserial algebras do not coincide. In these notes we provide a detailed proof of the fact that a selfinjective special biserial algebra can be stably equivalent only to a stably biserial algebra following some ideas from the paper by Pogorzały. We will analyse the structure of symmetric stably biserial algebras and show that in characteri…
We give a complete description of all special biserial cluster-tilted algebras over a finite dimensional hereditary algebra H over an algebraically closed field K.
In this paper, we determine the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology groups of some self-injective special biserial algebra whose Grothendieck group is of rank $4$. This result provides us with a negative answer to Happel's question in [H].
Let $\mathbf{k}$ be an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, let $Λ$ be a finite dimensional $\mathbf{k}$-algebra and let $V$ be a $Λ$-module with stable endomorphism ring isomorphic to $\mathbf{k}$. If $Λ$ is self-injective, then $V$ has a universal deformation ring $R(Λ,V)$, which is a complete local commutative Noetherian $\mathbf{k}$-algebra with residue field $\mathbf{k}$. Moreover, if $Λ$ is further a Frobenius $\mathbf{k}$-algebra, then $R(Λ,V)$ is stable under syzygies. We use these facts to determine the universal deformation rings of string $Λ_{m,N}$-modules whose c…
In this paper we treat the $τ$-tilting finiteness of biserial (respectively special biserial) algebras over algebraically closed (respectively arbitrary) fields. Inside these families, to compare the notions of representation-finiteness and $τ$-tilting finiteness, we reduce the problem to the $τ$-tilting finiteness of minimal representation-infinite (special) biserial algebras. Building upon the classification of minimal representation-infinite algebras, we fully determine which minimal representation-infinite (special) biserial algebras are $τ$-tilting finite and which ones are not. To do so,…
We calculate the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology groups of a self-injective special biserial algebra $Λ_{s}$ obtained by a circular quiver with double arrows. Moreover, we give a presentation of the Hochschild cohomology ring modulo nilpotence of $Λ_{s}$ by generators and relations. This result shows that the Hochschild cohomology ring modulo nilpotence of $Λ_{s}$ is finitely generated as an algebra.
We show that the irreducible components of any moduli space of semistable representations of a special biserial algebra are always isomorphic to products of projective spaces of various dimensions. This is done by showing that irreducible components of varieties of representations of special biserial algebras are isomorphic to irreducible components of products of varieties of circular complexes, and therefore normal, allowing us to apply recent results of the second and third authors on moduli spaces.
Let $\mathbf{k}$ be an algebraically closed field. In this article, inspired by the description of indecomposable objects in the derived category of a gentle algebra obtained by V. Bekkert and H. A. Merklen, we define string complexes for a certain class $\mathscr{C}$ of symmetric special biserial algebras, which are indecomposable perfect complexes in the corresponding derived category. We also prove that if $Λ$ is a $\mathbf{k}$-algebra in the class $\mathscr{C}$ and $P^\bullet$ is a string complex over $Λ$, then $P^\bullet$ lies in the rim of its Auslander-Reiten component.
We present discrete models of special biserial (SB) algebras and their string modules, drawing inspiration from cellular automata, and cast new light on patterns among syzygies. We explore applications of our models to open questions in homological algebra regarding certain triangulated subcategories of derived categories, with implications for the finitistic dimension conjectures. More pertinently, our models provide the inner workings for a new, original GAP package called SBStrips, written and implemented by the author. Its source code is freely available online and its documentation is inc…
Gendo-symmetric algebras were introduced by Fang and Koenig as a generalisation of symmetric algebras. Namely, they are endomorphism rings of generators over a symmetric algebra. This article studies various algebraic and homological properties of representation-finite gendo-symmetric biserial algebras. We show that the associated symmetric algebras for these gendo-symmetric algebras are Brauer tree algebras, and classify the generators involved using Brauer tree combinatorics. We also study almost $ν$-stable derived equivalences, introduced by Hu and Xi, between representation-finite gendo-sy…
Birge Huisgen-Zimmermann calls a finite dimensional algebra homologically tame provided the little and the big finitistic dimension are equal and finite. The question formulated in the title has been discussed by her in the paper "Representation-tame algebras need not be homologically tame", by looking for any $r > 0$ at a sequence of algebras $Λ_m$ with big finitistic dimension $r+m$. As we will show, also the little finitistic dimension of $Λ_m$ is r+m. It follows that contrary to her assertion, all her algebras $Λ_m$ are homologically tame.
In this paper we study multiserial and special multiserial algebras. These algebras are a natural generalization of biserial and special biserial algebras to algebras of wild representation type. We define a module to be multiserial if its radical is the sum of uniserial modules whose pairwise intersection is either 0 or a simple module. We show that all finitely generated modules over a special multiserial algebra are multiserial. In particular, this implies that, in analogy to special biserial algebras being biserial, special multiserial algebras are multiserial. We then show that the class …
Let k be a field. A finite dimensional k-algebra is said to be minimal representation-infinite provided it is representation-infinite and all its proper factor algebras are representation-finite. Our aim is to classify the special biserial algebras which are minimal representation-infinite. The second part describes the corresponding module categories.
We give a simple combinatorial criterion allowing to recognize whether a string (or, more generally, a special biserial) algebra is a laura algebra or not. We also show that a special biserial algebra is laura if and only if it has a finite number of isomorphism classes of indecomposable modules which have projective dimension and injective dimension greater than or equal to two, solving a conjecture ok Skowronski for special biserial algebras.
In the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras $A$ over a field, the classification of 2-term (pre)silting complexes is an important problem. One of the useful tool is the g-vector cones associated to the 2-term presilting complexes in the real Grothendieck group $K_0(\operatorname{\mathsf{proj}} A)_{\mathbb{R}}:=K_0(\operatorname{\mathsf{proj}} A) \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} {\mathbb{R}}$. The aim of this paper is to study the complement $\operatorname{\mathsf{NR}}$ of the union $\operatorname{\mathsf{Cone}}$ of all g-vector cones, which we call the non-rigid region. By the work of Iyam…
We consider a class of self-injective special biserial algebras $Λ_N$ over a field $K$ and show that the Hochschild cohomology ring of $Λ_N$ is a finitely generated $K$-algebra. Moreover the Hochschild cohomology ring of $Λ_N$ modulo nilpotence is a finitely generated commutative $K$-algebra of Krull dimension two. As a consequence the conjecture of Snashall-Solberg \cite{SS}, concerning the Hochschild cohomology ring modulo nilpotence, holds for this class of algebras.
The notion of mutation plays crucial roles in representation theory of algebras. Two kinds of mutation are well-known: tilting/silting mutation and quiver-mutation. In this paper, we focus on tilting mutation for symmetric algebras. Introducing mutation of SB quivers, we explicitly give a combinatorial description of tilting mutation of symmetric special biserial algebras. As an application, we generalize Rickard's star theorem. We also introduce flip of Brauer graphs and apply our results to Brauer graph algebras.
We introduce Brauer complex of symmetric SB-algebra, and reformulate in terms of Brauer complex the so far known invariants of stable and derived equivalence of symmetric SB-algebras. In particular, the genus of Brauer complex turns out to be invariant under derived equivalence. We study transformations of Brauer complexes which preserve class of derived equivalence. Additionally, we establish a new invariant of derived equivalence of symmetric SB-algebras. As a consequence, symmetric SB-algebras with Brauer complex of genus 0 are classified. Keywords: Brauer tree algebras, special biserial al…
Let $A$ be a special biserial algebra over an algebraically closed field. We show that the first Hohchshild cohomology group of $A$ with coefficients in the bimodule $A$ vanishes if and only if $A$ is representation finite and simply connected (in the sense of Bongartz and Gabriel), if and only if the Euler characteristic of $Q$ equals the number of indecomposable non uniserial projective injective $A$-modules (up to isomorphism). Moreover, if this is the case, then all the higher Hochschild cohomology groups of $A$ vanish.
We develop the theory of special biserial and string coalgebras and other concepts from the representation theory of quivers. These tools are then used to describe the finite dimensional comodules and Auslander-Reiten quiver for the coordinate Hopf algebra of quantum SL(2) at a root of unity. We also describe the stable Green ring and compute quantum dimensions.
We provide a combinatorial algorithm for constructing the stable Auslander-Reiten component containing a given indecomposable module of a symmetric special biserial algebra using only information from its underlying Brauer graph. We also show that the structure of the Auslander-Reiten quiver is closely related to the distinct Green walks around the Brauer graph and detail the relationship between the precise shape of the stable Auslander-Reiten components for domestic Brauer graph algebras and their underlying graph. Furthermore, we show that the specific component containing a given simple or…
We determine the Gerstenhaber structure on the Hochschild cohomology ring of a class of self-injective special biserial algebras. Each of these algebras is presented as a quotient of the path algebra of a certain quiver. In degree one, we show that the cohomology is isomorphic, as a Lie algebra, to a direct sum of copies of a subquotient of the Virasoro algebra. These copies share Virasoro degree 0 and commute otherwise. Finally, we describe the cohomology in degree $n$ as a module over this Lie algebra by providing its decomposition as a direct sum of indecomposable modules.
We consider a natural generalisation of symmetric Nakayama algebras, namely, symmetric special biserial algebras with at most one non-uniserial indecomposable projective module. We describe the basic algebras explicitly by quiver and relations, then classify them up to derived equivalence and up to stable equivalence of Morita type. This includes the algebras of [Bocian-Holm-Skowroński, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 2004], where they study the weakly symmetric algebras of Euclidean type, as well as some algebras of dihedral type.
Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, $Λ$ be a $k$-algebra and $V$ be a $Λ$-module. When it exists, the universal deformation ring $R(Λ,V)$ of $V$ is a $k$-algebra whose local homomorphisms to $R$ parametrize the lifts of $V$ up to $R\otimes_k Λ$, where $R$ is any complete, local commutative Noetherian $k$-algebra with residue field $k$. Symmetric special biserial algebras, which coincide with Brauer graph algebras, can be viewed as generalizing the blocks of finite type $p$-modular group algebras. Bleher and Wackwitz classified the universal deformation rings for all modules for symmetric special bi…
We show that two well-studied classes of tame algebras coincide: namely, the class of symmetric special biserial algebras coincides with the class of Brauer graph algebras. We then explore the connection between gentle algebras and symmetric special biserial algebras by explicitly determining the trivial extension of a gentle algebra by its minimal injective co-generator. This is a symmetric special biserial algebra and hence a Brauer graph algebra of which we explicitly give the Brauer graph. We further show that a Brauer graph algebra gives rise, via admissible cuts, to many gentle algebras …
We explicitly calculate a projective bimodule resolution for a special biserial algebra giving rise to the Hecke algebra H_q(S_4) when q=-1. We then determine the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology groups.
We study weakly symmetric special biserial algebras of infinite representation type. We show that usually some socle deformation of such an algebra has non-periodic bounded modules. The exceptions are precisely the algebras whose Brauer graph is a tree with no multiple edges. If the algebra has a non-periodic bounded module then its Hochschild cohomology cannot satisfy the finite generation property (Fg).
In this paper, motivated by a $τ$-tilting version of the Brauer-Thrall Conjectures, we study general properties of band modules and their endomorphisms in the module category of a finite dimensional algebra. As an application we describe properties of torsion classes containing band modules. Furthermore, we show that a special biserial algebra is $τ$-tilting finite if and only if no band module is a brick. We also recover a criterion for the $τ$-tilting finiteness of Brauer graph algebras in terms of the Brauer graph.
We exhibit for all positive integers r, an explicit cellular structure for the endomorphism algebra of the r'th tensor power of an integral form of the Weyl module with highest weight d of the quantised enveloping algebra of sl2. When q is specialised to a root of unity of order bigger than d, we consider the corresponding specialisation of the tensor power. We prove one general result which gives sufficient conditions for the commutativity of specialisation with the taking of endomorphism algebras, and another which relates the multiplicities of indecomposable summands to the dimensions of si…
We consider the Kronecker algebra $A=\mathcal{O}[X, Y]/(X^2, Y^2)$, where $\mathcal{O}$ is a complete discrete valuation ring. Since $A \otimesκ$ is a special biserial algebra, where $κ$ is the residue field of $\mathcal{O}$, one can compute a complete list of indecomposable $A\otimesκ$-modules. For each indecomposable $A\otimesκ$-module, we obtain a special kind of $A$-lattices called "Heller lattices". In this paper, we determine the non-periodic component of a variant of the stable Auslander--Reiten quiver for the category of $A$-lattices that contains "Heller lattices". Moreover, we give t…
This paper describes the module categories for a family of generic Hecke algebras that specialize to the complex reflection groups G(r,1,n) and to the certain endomorphism rings of permutation characters of finite general linear groups. In particular, complete sets of inequivalent, irreducible modules for semisimple specializations of these algebras are constructed.
We describe what it means for an algebra to be internally d-Calabi-Yau with respect to an idempotent. This definition abstracts properties of endomorphism algebras of (d-1)-cluster-tilting objects in certain stably (d-1)-Calabi-Yau Frobenius categories, as observed by Keller-Reiten. We show that an internally d-Calabi-Yau algebra satisfying mild additional assumptions can be realised as the endomorphism algebra of a (d-1)-cluster-tilting object in a Frobenius category. Moreover, if the algebra satisfies a stronger 'bimodule' internally d-Calabi-Yau condition, this Frobenius category is stably …
In this paper, we will consider derived equivalences for differential graded endomorphism algebras by Keller's approaches. First we construct derived equivalences of differential graded algebras which are endomorphism algebras of the objects from a triangle in the homotopy category of differential graded algebras. We also obtain derived equivalences of differential graded endomorphism algebras from a standard derived equivalence of finite dimensional algebras. Moreover, under some conditions, the cohomology rings of these differential graded endomorphism algebras are also derived equivalent. T…
For a finite-dimensional gentle algebra, it is already known that the functorially finite torsion classes of its category of finite-dimensional modules can be classified using a combinatorial interpretation, called maximal non-crossing sets of strings, of the corresponding support $τ$-tilting module (or equivalently, two-term silting complexes). In the topological interpretation of gentle algebras via marked surfaces, such a set can be interpreted as a dissection (or partial triangulation), or equivalently, a lamination that does not contain a closed curve. We will refine this combinatorics, w…
Given an arbitrary algebra $A$ we may associate to it a special endomorphism algebra, $R_A$, introduced by Auslander. Dlab and Ringel constructed a heredity chain for $R_A$, proving that every algebra $A$ has an associated highest weight theory. In this paper we investigate the quasihereditary structure of $R_A$ using an axiomatic approach.
Let $G$ be a finite group of Lie type. In studying the cross-characteristic representation theory of $G$, the (specialized) Hecke algebra $H=\End_G(\ind_B^G1_B)$ has played a important role. In particular, when $G=GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$ is a finite general linear group, this approach led to the Dipper-James theory of $q$-Schur algebras $A$. These algebras can be constructed over $\sZ:=\mathbb Z[t,t^{-1}]$ as the $q$-analog (with $q=t^2$) of an endomorphism algebra larger than $H$, involving parabolic subgroups. The algebra $A$ is quasi-hereditary over $\sZ$. An analogous algebra, still denoted $A$…
We introduce quasi-hereditary endomorphism algebras defined over a new class of finite dimensional monomial algebras with a special ideal structure. The main result is a uniform formula describing the Ringel duals of these quasi-hereditary algebras. As special cases, we obtain a Ringel-duality formula for a family of strongly quasi-hereditary algebras arising from a type A configuration of projective lines in a rational, projective surface as recently introduced by Hille and Ploog, for certain Auslander-Dlab-Ringel algebras, and for Eiriksson and Sauter's nilpotent quiver algebras when the qui…
