In this paper we study, in dimension two, the stability of the solutions of some nonlinear elliptic equations with Neumann boundary conditions, under perturbations of the domains in the Hausdorff complementary topology.
In this article we seek stability estimates in the inverse problem of determining the potential or the velocity in a wave equation in an anisotropic medium from measured Neumann boundary observations. This information is enclosed in the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the wave equation. We prove in dimension $n\geq 2$ that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the wave equation uniquely determines the electric potential and we prove Hölder-type stability in determining the potential.
We study spectral stability estimates of elliptic operators in divergence form $-\textrm{div} [A(w) \nabla g(w)]$ with the Neumann boundary condition in non-Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset \mathbb C$. The suggested method is based on connections of planar quasiconformal mappings with Sobolev spaces and its applications to the Poincaré inequalities.
In this article, we study the boundary inverse problem of determining the aligned magnetic fiaeld appearing in the magnetic Schrödinger equation in a periodic quantum cylindrical waveguide. Provided that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of the magnetic Schrödinger equation. We prove a Holder stability estimate with respect to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, by means of the geometrical optics solutions of the magnetic Schrodinger equation.
We study the inverse problem of identifying a periodic potential perturbation of the Dirichlet Laplacian acting in an infinite cylindrical domain, whose cross section is assumed to be bounded. We prove log-log stable determination of the potential with respect to the partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, where the Neumann data is taken on slightly more than half of the boundary of the domain.
We study the eigenvalue problem for the Neumann-Laplace operator in conformal regular planar domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}$. Conformal regular domains support the Poincaré inequality and this allows us to estimate the variation of the eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian upon domain perturbation via energy type integrals. Boundaries of such domains can have any Hausdorff dimension between one and two.
We examine the stability issue in the inverse problem of determining a scalar potential appearing in the stationary Schr{ö}dinger equation in a bounded domain, from a partial elliptic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Namely, the Dirichlet data is imposed on the shadowed face of the boundary of the domain and the Neumann data is measured on its illuminated face. We establish a log log stability estimate for the L2-norm (resp. the H minus 1-norm) of bounded (resp. L2) potentials whose difference is lying in any Sobolev space of order positive order.
We derive some bounds which can be viewed as an evidence of increasing stability in the problem of recovering the potential coefficient in the Schrödinger equation from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in the presence of attenuation, when energy level/frequency is growing. These bounds hold under certain a-priori regularity constraints on the unknown coefficient. Proofs use complex and bounded complex geometrical optics solutions.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of variational solution to the nonlinear Neumann boundary problem for the $p^{th}$-Sub-Laplacian associated to a system of Hörmander vector fields
This paper is focused on the study of an inverse problem for a non-self-adjoint hyperbolic equation. More precisely, we attempt to stably recover a first order coefficient appearing in a wave equation from the knowledge of Neumann boundary data. We show in dimension n greater than two, a stability estimate of H{ö}lder type for the inverse problem under consideration. The proof involves the reduction to an auxiliary inverse problem for an electromagnetic wave equation and the use of an appropriate Carleman estimate.
We give a new stability estimate for the problem of determining the time-dependent zero order coefficient in a parabolic equation from a partial parabolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The novelty of our result is that, contrary to the previous works, we do not need any measurement on the final time. We also show how this result can be used to establish a stability estimate for the problem of determining the nonlinear term in a semilinear parabolic equation from the corresponding "linearized" Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The key ingredient in our analysis is a parabolic version of an elliptic Carlema…
In this paper we establish new quantitative stability estimates with respect to domain perturbations for all the eigenvalues of both the Neumann and the Dirichlet Laplacian. Our main results follow from an abstract lemma stating that it is actually sufficient to provide an estimate on suitable projection operators. Whereas this lemma could be applied under different regularity assumptions on the domain, here we use it to estimate the spectrum in Lipschitz and in so-called Reifenberg-flat domains. Our argument also relies on suitable extension techniques and on an estimate on the decay of the e…
In this paper we study spectral stability of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian under the Kohn-Nirenberg elliptic regularization. We obtain quantitative estimates for stability of the spectrum of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian when either the operator or the underlying domain is perturbed.
We study the Neumann and Dirichlet problems for the total variation flow in metric measure spaces. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, in the Neumann problem we provide a notion of solutions which is valid for $L^1$ initial data, as well as prove their existence and uniqueness. Our main tools are the first-order linear differential structure due to Gigli and a version of the Gauss-Green formula.
We deal with the sharp asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues of elliptic operators with varying mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. In case of simple eigenvalues, we compute explicitly the constant appearing in front of the expansion's leading term. This allows inferring some remarkable consequences for Aharonov-Bohm eigenvalues when the singular part of the operator has two coalescing poles.
In this paper we investigate the inverse problem of determining the time independent scalar potential of the dynamic Schrödinger equation in an infinite cylindrical domain, from partial measurement of the solution on the boundary. Namely, if the potential is known in a neighborhood of the boundary of the spatial domain, we prove that it can be logarithmic stably determined in the whole waveguide from a single observation of the solution on any arbitrary strip-shaped subset of the boundary.
We consider a Neumann problem for strictly convex variational functionals of linear growth. We establish the existence of minimisers among $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-functions provided that the domain under consideration is simply connected. Hence, in this situation, the relaxation of the functional to the space of functions of bounded variation, which has better compactness properties, is not necessary. Similar $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-regularity results for the corresponding Dirichlet problem are only known under rather restrictive convexity assumptions limiting its non-uniformity up to the bo…
In this note we analyze how perturbations of a ball $\mathfrak{B}_r \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ behaves in terms of their first (non-trivial) Neumann and Dirichlet $\infty-$eigenvalues when a volume constraint $\\mathscr{L}^n(Ω) = \mathscr{L}^n(\mathfrak{B}_r)$ is imposed. Our main result states that $Ω$ is uniformly close to a ball when it has first Neumann and Dirichlet eigenvalues close to the ones for the ball of the same volume $\mathfrak{B}_r$. In fact, we show that, if $$ |λ_{1,\infty}^D(Ω) - λ_{1,\infty}^D(\mathfrak{B}_r)| = δ_1 \quad \text{and} \quad |λ_{1,\infty}^N(Ω) - λ_{1,\infty}^N(\mat…
The Blackstock-Crighton equation models nonlinear acoustic wave propagation in thermo-viscous fluids. In the present work we investigate the associated inhomogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems in a bounded domain and prove long-time well-posedness and exponential stability for sufficiently small data. The solution depends analytically on the data. In the Dirichlet case, the solution decays to zero and the same holds for Neumann conditions if the data have zero mean. We choose an optimal $L_p$-setting, where the regularity of the initial and boundary data are necessary and su…
We study spectral stability of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{C}^n$ when the underlying domain is perturbed. In particular, we establish upper semi-continuity properties for the variational eigenvalues of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian on bounded pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$, lower semi-continuity properties on pseudoconvex domains that satisfy property ($P$), and quantitative estimates on smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains of finite D'Angelo type in $\mathbb{C}^n$.
We revisit the stability issue of determining the conductivity at the boundary from the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We discuss both the method based on singular solutions and the one built on the localized oscillating solutions. Our primary objective is not establishing new results on this subject even if the present work contains some new ones. We mainly clarify some points in the existing proofs and make some comments. We also derive some consequences of the stability inequality of the determination of the conductivity at the boundary from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.
We study boundary regularity of maps from two-dimensional domains into manifolds which are critical with respect to a generic conformally invariant variational functional and which, at the boundary, enter perpendicularly into a support manifold. For example, harmonic maps, or $H$-surfaces, with a partially free boundary condition. In the interior it is known, by the celebrated work of Riviere, that these maps satisfy a system with an antisymmetric potential, from which one can derive regularity of the solution. We show that these maps satisfy along the boundary a system with a nonlocal antisym…
In this paper we are interested in establishing stability estimates in the inverse problem of determining on a compact Riemannian manifold the electric potential or the conformal factor in a Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet data from measured Neumann boundary observations. This information is enclosed in the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the Schrödinger equation. We prove in dimension n bigger than 2 that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the Schrödinger equation uniquely determines the electric potential and we establish Hölder-type stability estimates in…
In this article we deal with a class of geometric inverse problem for bottom detection by one single measurement on the free surface in water--waves. We found upper and lower bounds for the size of the region enclosed between two different bottoms, in terms of Neumann and/or Dirichlet data on the free surface. Starting from the general water--waves system in bounded domains with side walls, we manage to formulate the problem in terms of the Dirichlet to Neumann operator and thus, as an elliptic problem in a bounded domain with Neumann homogeneous condition on the rigid boundary. Then we study …
In this paper we consider the problem of determining an unknown pair $λ$, $μ$ of piecewise constant Lamé parameters inside a three dimensional body from the Dirichlet to Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz continuous dependence of $λ$ and $μ$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map.
In this paper, we develop some properties of the $a_{x,y}(.)$-Neumann derivative for the fractional $a_{x,y}(.)$-Laplacian operator. Therefore we prove the basic proprieties of the correspondent function spaces. In the second part of this paper, by means of Ekeland's variational principal and direct variational approach, we prove the existence of weak solutions for a nonlocal problem with nonhomogeneous Neumann and Robin boundary condition.
We prove Hölder type stability estimates near generic simple Riemannian metrics for the inverse problem of recovering such metrics from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the wave equation for the Laplace-Beltrami operator.
We show that potentials with jump discontinuities can be recovered from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map using Bukhgeim's method. Combining with known formulas, this enables the recovery from the scattering amplitude at a fixed energy. We also provide a priori stability estimates for reconstruction from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map as well as from the scattering amplitudegiven an approximate knowledge of the location of the discontinuities.
We consider the Calderòn problem in an infinite cylindrical domain, whose cross section is a bounded domain of the plane. We prove log-log stability in the determination of the isotropic periodic conductivity coefficient from partial Dirichlet data and partial Neumann boundary observations of the solution.
We employ a variational approach to study the Neumann boundary value problem for the $p$-Laplacian on bounded smooth-enough domains in the metric setting, and show that solutions exist and are bounded. The boundary data considered are Borel measurable bounded functions. We also study boundary continuity properties of the solutions. One of the key tools utilized is the trace theorem for Newton-Sobolev functions, and another is an analog of the De Giorgi inequality adapted to the Neumann problem.
We prove the existence of multiple positive BV-solutions of the Neumann problem $$ \begin{cases} \displaystyle -\left(\frac{u'}{\sqrt{1+u'^2}}\right)'=a(x)f(u)\quad&\mbox{in }(0,1), u'(0)=u'(1)=0,& {cases} $$ where $a(x) > 0$ and $f$ belongs to a class of nonlinear functions whose prototype example is given by $f(u) = -λu + u^p$, for $λ> 0$ and $p > 1$. In particular, $f(0)=0$ and $f$ has a unique positive zero, denoted by $u_0$. Solutions are distinguished by the number of intersections (in a generalized sense) with the constant solution $u = u_0$. We further prove that the solutions found ha…
In this paper we consider the inverse problem of determining on a compact Riemannian manifold the metric tensor in the wave equation with Dirichlet data from measured Neumann boundary observations. This information is enclosed in the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the wave equation. We prove in dimension $n\geq 2$ that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the wave equation uniquely determines the metric tensor and we establish logarithm-type stability.
In this paper we study a variational Neumann problem for the higher order $s$-fractional Laplacian, with $s>1$. In the process, we introduce some non-local Neumann boundary conditions that appear in a natural way from a Gauss-like integration formula.
We consider a second-order hyperbolic equation on an open bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\geq2$, with $C^2$-boundary $Γ=\paΩ=\bar{Γ_0\cupΓ_1}$, $Γ_0\capΓ_1=\emptyset$, subject to non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on the entire boundary $Γ$. We then study the inverse problem of determining the interior damping coefficient of the equation by means of an additional measurement of the Dirichlet boundary trace of the solution, in a suitable, explicit sub-portion $Γ_1$ of the boundary $Γ$, and over a computable time interval $T>0$. Under sharp conditions on the complementary pa…
We use the notion of first and second inner variations as a bridge allowing one to pass to the limit of first and second Gateaux variations for the Allen-Cahn, Cahn-Hilliard and Ohta-Kawasaki energies. Under suitable assumptions, this allows us to show that stability passes to the sharp interface limit, including boundary terms, by considering non-compactly supported velocity and acceleration fields in our variations. This complements the results of Tonegawa, and Tonegawa and Wickramasekera, where interior stability is shown to pass to the limit. As a further application, we prove an asymptoti…
We prove that if $\Om \subseteq \R^2$ is bounded and $\R^2 \setminus \Om$ satisfies suitable structural assumptions (for example it has a countable number of connected components), then $W^{1,2}(\Om)$ is dense in $W^{1,p}(\Om)$ for every $1\le p<2$. The main application of this density result is the study of stability under boundary variations for nonlinear Neumann problems of the form $$ \begin{cases} -{\rm div} A(x,\nabla u)+B(x,u)=0 & \text{in}\Om, \\ A(x,\nabla u)\cdot ν=0 & \text{on}\partial \Om, \end{cases} $$ where $A:\R^2\times \R^2 \to \R^2$ and $B:\R^2 \times \R \to \R$ are Carathéod…
We study the variation of the Neumann eigenvalues of the $p$-Laplace operator under quasiconformal perturbations of space domains. This study allows to obtain lower estimates of the Neumann eigenvalues in fractal type domains. The suggested approach is based on the geometric theory of composition operators in connections with the quasiconformal mapping theory.
In this paper, we treat the inverse problem of determining two time-dependent coefficients appearing in a dissipative wave equation, from measured Neumann boundary observations. We establish in dimension $n\geq 2$, stability estimates with respect to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of these coefficients provided that are known outside a cloaking regions. Moreover, we prove that it can be stably recovered in larger subsets of the domain by enlarging the set of data
We study an inhomogeneous Neumann boundary value problem for functions of least gradient on bounded domains in metric spaces that are equipped with a doubling measure and support a Poincaré inequality. We show that solutions exist under certain regularity assumptions on the domain, but are generally nonunique. We also show that solutions can be taken to be differences of two characteristic functions, and that they are regular up to the boundary when the boundary is of positive mean curvature. By regular up to the boundary we mean that if the boundary data is $1$ in a neighborhood of a point on…
We consider a nonlinear Neumann problem driven by a $p$-Laplacian-type, nonhomogeneous elliptic differential operator and a Carathéodory reaction term. In this paper we prove the existence of two extremal constant sign smooth solutions and a nontrivial nodal smooth solution. In the proof we use variational methods with truncation techniques, critical point theory and Morse theory (critical groups).
The oscillation of a Laplacian eigenfunction gives a great deal of information about the manifold on which it is defined. This oscillation can be encoded in the nodal deficiency, an important geometric quantity that is notoriously hard to compute, or even estimate. Here we compare two recently obtained formulas for the nodal deficiency, one in terms of an energy functional on the space of equipartitions of the manifold, and the other in terms of a two-sided Dirichlet-to-Neumann map defined on the nodal set. We relate these two approaches by giving an explicit formula for the Hessian of the equ…
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$. For $ε>0$ small, we construct non-constant solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau equations $-Δu=\frac{1}{ε^2}(1-|u|^2)u$ in $Ω$ such that on $\partial Ω$ u satisfies $|u|=1$ and $u\wedge \partial_νu=0$. These boundary conditions are called semi-stiff and are intermediate between the Dirichlet and the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. In order to construct such solutions we use a variational reduction method very similar to the one used by del Pino-Kowalczyk-Musso to find solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau equations with Dirichlet and homoge…
In this paper we study variations of the first non-trivial eigenvalues of the two-dimensional $p$-Laplace operator, $p>2$, generated by measure preserving quasiconformal mappings $φ: \mathbb D\toΩ$, $Ω\subset\mathbb R^2$. This study is based on the geometric theory of composition operators on Sobolev spaces with applications to sharp embedding theorems. By using a sharp version of the reverse Hölder inequality we obtain lower estimates of the first non-trivial eigenvalues for Ahlfors type domains.
We present first results on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated with the $1$-Laplace operator in $L^1$. In particular, we show that this operator can be realized as a sub-differential operator in $L^1\times L^{\infty}$ of a homogeneous convex, continuous functional with effective domain $L^1$. Even though the Dirichlet problem associated with the $1$-Laplace operator loses the property that weak solutions for boundary data in $L^1$ are unique, we prove a type of stability/compactness result with respect to the boundary data in $L^1$ of this problem. We apply our results for the statio…
In this paper, we study the stability of two inverse boundary value problems in an infinite slab with partial data. These problems have been studied by Li and Uhlmann for the case of the Schrodinger equation and by Krupchyk, Lassas and Uhlmann for the case of the magnetic Schrodinger equation. Here we quantify the method of uniqueness proposed by Li and Uhlmann and prove a log-log stability estimate for the inverse problems associated to the Schrodinger equation. The boundary measurements considered in these problems are modelled by partial knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map: in the fir…
We study the existence of positive increasing radial solutions for superlinear Neumann problems in the ball. We do not impose any growth condition on the nonlinearity at infinity and our assumptions allow for interactions with the spectrum. In our approach we use both topological and variational arguments, and we overcome the lack of compactness by considering the cone of nonnegative, nondecreasing radial functions of H^1.
We consider $N$-species nonautonomous competitive systems of partial differential equations of Kolmogorov type. Under the Neumann boundary conditions we give a sufficient condition for the system to be uniformly stable and globally attractive.
In the present paper we prove existence results for solutions to nonlinear elliptic Neumann problems whose prototype is \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δ_{p} u -\text{div} (c(x)|u|^{p-2}u)) =f & \text{in}\ Ω, \\ \left( |\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u+ c(x)|u|^{p-2}u \right)\cdot\underline n=0 & \text{on}\ \partial Ω\,, \end{cases} \end{equation*} when $f$ is just a summable function. Our approach allows also to deduce a stability result for renormalized solutions and an existence result for operator with a zero order term.
In this article we study the problem of recovering the initial data of the two-dimensional wave equation from Neumann measurements on a convex domain with smooth boundary in the plane. We derive an explicit inversion formula of a so-called back-projection type and deduce exact inversion formulas for circular and elliptical domains. In addition, for circular domains, we show that the initial data can also be recovered from any linear combination of its solution and its normal derivative on the boundary. Numerical results of our implementation of the derived inversion formulas are presented demo…
We consider the stability in the inverse problem consisting in the determination of an electric potential $q$, appearing in a Dirichlet initial-boundary value problem for the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δu+q(x)u=0$ in an unbounded wave guide $Ω=ω\times\mathbb R$ with $ω$ a bounded smooth domain of $\mathbb R^2$, from boundary observations. The observation is given by the Dirichlet to Neumann map associated to a wave equation. We prove a Hölder stability estimate in the determination of $q$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map. Moreover, provided that the gap between two electric potentials rich …
We study a nonlinear parametric Neumann problem driven by a nonhomogeneous quasilinear elliptic differential operator $\operatorname{div}(a(x,\nabla u))$, a special case of which is the $p$-Laplacian. The reaction term is a nonlinearity function $f$ which exhibits $(p-1)$-subcritical growth. By using variational methods, we prove a multiplicity result on the existence of weak solutions for such problems. An explicit example of an application is also presented.
