In this article we deal with a class of geometric inverse problem for bottom detection by one single measurement on the free surface in water--waves. We found upper and lower bounds for the size of the region enclosed between two different bottoms, in terms of Neumann and/or Dirichlet data on the free surface. Starting from the general water--waves system in bounded domains with side walls, we manage to formulate the problem in terms of the Dirichlet to Neumann operator and thus, as an elliptic problem in a bounded domain with Neumann homogeneous condition on the rigid boundary. Then we study the properties of the Dirichlet to Neumann map and analyze the called method of size estimation.
We study the beach problem for water waves. The case we consider is a compact fluid domain, where the free surface intersect the bottom along an edge, with a non-zero contact angle. Using elliptic estimates in domain with edges and a new equation on the Taylor coefficient, we establish a priori estimates, for angles smaller than a dimensional constant. Local existence will be derived in a following paper.
Given any suitably small, localized, and smooth initial data, in this paper, we prove global regularity for the $3D$ finite depth gravity water wave system. As a byproduct, we rule out the small, localized traveling waves in $3D$, which do exist for the same system in $2D$.
This is a study of the Euler equations for free surface water waves in the case of varying bathymetry, considering the problem in the shallow water scaling regime. In the case of rapidly varying periodic bottom boundaries this is a problem of homogenization theory. In this setting we derive a new model system of equations, consisting of the classical shallow water equations coupled with nonlocal evolution equations for a periodic corrector term. We also exhibit a new resonance phenomenon between surface waves and a periodic bottom. This resonance, which gives rise to secular growth of surface …
As a starting point of studying the long time behavior of the $3D$ water waves system in the flat bottom setting, in this paper, we try to improve the understanding of the Dirichlet-Neumann operator in this setting. As an application, we study the $3D$ gravity waves system and derive a new $L^2-L^\infty$ type energy estimate, which has a good structure in the $L^\infty-$type space. In our second paper, base on the results we obtained in this paper, we prove the global regularity of the $3D$ gravity waves system for suitably small initial data.
In this paper we consider the 1D Green-Naghdi system over a nonflat bottom. This system describes the evolution of water waves over an uneven bottom in the shallow water regime in terms of the water depth $h$ and the horizontal velocity $u$. Using a Lagrangian formulation of this system on a Sobolev type diffeomorphism group we prove local well-posedness for $(h,u)$ in the Sobolev space $(1+H^s(\mathbb R)) \times H^{s+1}(\mathbb R),\; s > 1/2$. This improves the local well-posedness range.
We focus here on the water waves problem for uneven bottoms in the long-wave regime, on an unbounded two or three-dimensional domain. In order to derive asymptotic models for this problem, we consider two different regimes of bottom topography, one for small variations in amplitude, and one for strong variations. Starting from the Zakharov formulation of this problem, we rigorously compute the asymptotics expansion of the involved Dirichlet-Neumann operator. then, following the global strategy introduced by Bona, Colin and Lannes, new symetric asymptotic models are derived for each regime of b…
In this paper we derive and prove the wellposedness of a deep water model that generalizes the Saut-Xu system for nonflat bottoms. Then, we present a new numerical method based on a splitting approach for studying this system. The advantage of this method is that it does not require any low pass filter to avoid spurious oscillations. We prove a local error estimate and we show that our scheme represents a good approximation of order one in time. Then, we perform some numerical experiments which confirm our theoretical result and we study three physical phenomena : the evolution of water waves …
We carry out the group classification of the class of two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable bottom topography using an optimized version of the method of furcate splitting. The equivalence group of this class is found by the algebraic method. Using algebraic techniques, we construct additional point equivalences between some of the listed cases of Lie-symmetry extensions, which are inequivalent up to transformations from the equivalence group.
We classify zeroth-order conservation laws of systems from the class of two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable bottom topography using an optimized version of the method of furcate splitting. The classification is carried out up to equivalence generated by the equivalence group of this class. We find additional point equivalences between some of the listed cases of extensions of the space of zeroth-order conservation laws, which are inequivalent up to transformations from the equivalence group. Hamiltonian structures of systems of shallow water equations are used for relating th…
The purpose of this article is to clarify the Cauchy theory of the water waves equations as well in terms of regularity indexes for the initial conditions as for the smoothness of the bottom of the domain (namely no regularity assumption is assumed on the bottom). Our main result is that, following the approach developped by T. Alazard and G. Métivier in [1], after suitable paralinearizations, the system can be arranged into an explicit symmetric system of Schrödinger type. We then show that the smoothing effect for the (one dimensional) surface tension water waves proved by H. Christianson, V…
In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness of the water wave problem with surface tension in the case of finite depth by working in the Eulerian setting. For the flat bottom, as surface tension tends to zero, the solution of the water wave problem with surface tension converges to the solution of the water wave problem without surface tension.
We prove Strichartz estimates for gravity water waves, in arbitrary dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms. We consider rough solutions such that, initially, the first order derivatives of the velocity field are not controlled in $L^\infty$-norm, or the initial free surface has a curvature not controlled in $L^2$-norm.
In this paper we focus on the water waves problem for uneven bottoms on a two-dimensionnal domain. Starting from the symmetric Boussinesq systems derived in [Chazel, Influence of topography on long water waves, 2007], we recover the uncoupled Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) approximation justified by Schneider and Wayne for flat bottoms, and by Iguchi in the context of bottoms tending to zero at infinity at a substantial rate. The goal of this paper is to investigate the validity of this approximation for more general bathymetries. We exhibit two kinds of topography for which this approximation diverg…
We exhibit blow-up conditions for the gravity water-waves equations in any dimension and in domains with arbitrary bottoms. We follow the method by Alazard, Burq and Zuily of using a paradifferential reduction of the equations and derive precise a priori Sobolev estimates. Those estimates are then used to prove three different blow-up conditions where neither the boundedness of the curvature of the surface nor the boundedness in time of the Lipschitz norm of the velocity are needed.
In this article, we derive a viscous Boussinesq system for surface water waves from Navier-Stokes equations. We use neither the irrotationality assumption, nor the Zakharov-Craig-Sulem formulation. During the derivation, we find the bottom shear stress, and also the decay rate for shallow water. In order to justify our derivation, we derive the viscous Korteweg-de Vries equation from our viscous Boussinesq system and compare it to the ones found in the bibliography. We also extend the system to the 3-D case.
In this article we consider irrotational gravity water waves with finite bottom. Our goal is two-fold. First, we represent the equations in holomorphic coordinates and discuss the local well-posedness of the problem in this context. Second, we consider the small data problem and establish cubic lifespan bounds for the solutions. Our results are uniform in the infinite depth limit, and match the earlier infinite depth result of Hunter-Ifrim-Tataru.
We prove the first bifurcation result of time quasi-periodic traveling waves solutions for space periodic water waves with vorticity. In particular we prove existence of small amplitude time quasi-periodic solutions of the gravity-capillary water waves equations with constant vorticity, for a bidimensional fluid over a flat bottom delimited by a space-periodic free interface. These quasi-periodic solutions exist for all the values of depth, gravity and vorticity, and restricting the surface tension to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.
We consider the gravity-capillary waves in any dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms. Using the paradiferential reduction established in the companion paper, we prove Strichartz estimates for solutions to this problem, at a low regularity level such that initially, the velocity field can be non-Lipschitz up to the free surface. We then use those estimates to solve the Cauchy problem at this level of regularity.
We prove a dispersive estimate for the solutions of the linearized Water-Waves equations in dimension 1 in presence of a flat bottom. We prove a decay with respect to time t of order 1/3 for solutions with initial data in weighted Sobolev spaces. We also give variants to this result with different decays for a more convenient use of the dispersive estimate. We then give an existence result for the full Water-Waves equations in weighted spaces for practical uses of the proven dispersive estimates.
We consider the capillary-gravity water-waves problem of finite depth with a flat bottom of one or two horizontal dimensions. We derive the modulation equations of leading and next-to-leading order in the hyperbolic scaling for three weakly amplitude-modulated plane-wave solutions of the linearized problem in the absence of quadratic and cubic resonances. We fully justify the derived system of macroscopic equations in the case of pure gravity waves, i.e. in the case of zero surface tension, employing the stability of the water-waves problem on the time-scale $O(1/\ep)$ obtained by Alvarez-Sama…
We prove the existence of small amplitude time quasi-periodic solutions of the pure gravity water waves equations with constant vorticity, for a bidimensional fluid over a flat bottom delimited by a space periodic free interface. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme we construct traveling nonlinear waves which pass through each other slightly deforming and retaining forever a quasiperiodic structure. These solutions exist for any fixed value of depth and gravity and restricting the vorticity parameter to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.
In this paper, we want to understand the Proudman resonance. It is a resonant respond in shallow waters of a water body on a traveling atmospheric disturbance when the speed of the disturbance is close to the typical water wave velocity. We show here that the same kind of resonance exists for landslide tsunamis and we propose a mathematical approach to investigate these phenomena based on the derivation, justification and analysis of relevant asymptotic models. This approach allows us to investigate more complex phenomena that are not dealt with in the physics literature such as the influence …
An explicit expression for the Dirichlet-Neumann operator for surface water waves is presented. For non-overturning waves, but without assuming small amplitudes, the formula is first derived in two dimensions, subsequently extrapolated in higher dimensions and with a moving bottom. Although described here for water waves, this elementary approach could be adapted to many other problems having similar mathematical formulations.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for gravity water waves, in a domain with a flat bottom and in arbitrary space dimension. We prove that if the data are of size $\varepsilon$ in a space of analytic functions which have a holomorphic extension in a strip of size $σ$, then the solution exists up to a time of size $C/\varepsilon$ in a space of analytic functions having at time $t$ a holomorphic extension in a strip of size $σ- C'\varepsilon t$.
This paper studies the classical water wave problem with vorticity described by the Euler equations with a free surface under the influence of gravity over a flat bottom. Based on fundamental work \cite{ConstantinStrauss}, we first obtain two continuous bifurcation curves which meet the laminar flow only one time by using modified analytic bifurcation theorem. They are symmetric waves whose profiles are monotone between each crest and trough. Furthermore, we find that there is at least one inflection point on the wave profile between successive crests and troughs and the free surface is strict…
We consider the gravity-capillary water waves problem in a domain $Ω_t \subset \mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$ with substantial geometric features. Namely, we consider a variable bottom, smooth obstacles in the flow and a constant background current. We utilize a vortex sheet model introduced by Ambrose, et. al. in arXiv:2108.01786. We show that the water waves problem is locally-in-time well-posed in this geometric setting and study the lifespan of solutions. We then add a damping term and derive evolution equations that account for the damper. Ultimately, we show that the same well-posedness a…
We consider the propagation of surface water waves in a straight planar channel perturbed at the bottom by several thin curved tunnels and wells. We propose a method to construct non reflecting underwater topographies of this type at an arbitrary prescribed wave number. To proceed, we compute asymptotic expansions of the diffraction solutions with respect to the small parameter of the geometry taking into account the existence of boundary layer phenomena. We establish error estimates to validate the expansions using advances techniques of weighted spaces with detached asymptotics. In the proce…
We consider in this article the system of (pure) gravity water waves in any dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms. The unique solvability of the problem was established by Alazard-Burq-Zuily [Invent. Math, 198 (2014), no. 1, 71--163] at a low regularity level where the initial surface is $C^{\frac{3}{2}+}$ in terms of Sobolev embeddings, which allows the existence of free surfaces with unbounded curvature. Our result states that the solutions obtained above depend continuously on initial data in the strong topology where they are constructed. This completes a well-posedness resul…
We consider the two-dimensional capillary-gravity water waves problem where the free surface $Γ_t$ intersects the bottom $Γ_b$ at two contact points. In our previous works \cite{MW2, MW3}, the local well-posedness for this problem has been proved with the contact angles less than $π/16$. In this paper, we study the case where the contact angles belong to $(0, π/2)$. It involves much worse singularities generated from corresponding elliptic systems, which have a strong influence on the regularities for the free surface and the velocity field. Combining the theory of singularity decompositions f…
The system of equations for water waves, when linearized about equilibrium of a fluid body with a varying bottom boundary, is described by a spectral problem for the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator of the unperturbed free surface. This spectral problem is fundamental in questions of stability, as well as to the perturbation theory of evolution of the free surface in such settings. In addition, the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator is self-adjoint when given an appropriate definition and domain, and it is a novel but very natural spectral problem for a nonlocal operator. In the case in which the bott…
This paper is devoted to the proof of a well-posedness result for the gravity water waves equations, in arbitrary dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms, when the initial velocity field is not necessarily Lipschitz. Moreover, for two-dimensional waves, we can consider solutions such that the curvature of the initial free surface does not belong to $L^2$. The proof is entirely based on the Eulerian formulation of the water waves equations, using microlocal analysis to obtain sharp Sobolev and Hölder estimates. We first prove tame estimates in Sobolev spaces depending linearly on Hö…

In this paper we address a particular fluid-solid interaction problem in which the solid object is lying at the bottom of a layer of fluid and moves under the forces created by waves travelling on the surface of this layer. More precisely, we consider the water waves problem in a fluid of fixed depth with a flat bottom topography and with an object lying on the bottom, allowed to move horizontally under the pressure forces created by the waves. After establishing the physical setting of the problem, namely the dynamics of the fluid and the mechanics of the solid motion, as well as analyzing th…
In the vast literature on tsunami research, few articles have been devoted to energy issues. A theoretical investigation on the energy of waves generated by bottom motion is performed here. We start with the full incompressible Euler equations in the presence of a free surface and derive both dispersive and non-dispersive shallow-water equations with an energy equation. It is shown that dispersive effects only appear at higher order in the energy budget. Then we solve the Cauchy-Poisson problem of tsunami generation for the linearized water wave equations. Exchanges between potential and kinet…
Consider a three-dimensional fluid in a rectangular tank, bounded by a flat bottom, vertical walls and a free surface evolving under the influence of gravity. We prove that one can estimate its energy by looking only at the motion of the points of contact between the free surface and the vertical walls. The proof relies on the multiplier technique, the Craig-Sulem-Zakharov formulation of the water-wave problem, a Pohozaev identity for the Dirichlet to Neumann operator, previous results about the Cauchy problem and computations inspired by the analysis done by Benjamin and Olver of the conserva…
We propose higher-order approximation formulae recovering the surface elevation from the pressure at the bed and the background shear flow for small-amplitude Stokes and solitary water waves. They offer improvements over the pressure transfer function and the hydrostatic approximation. The formulae compare reasonably well with asymptotic approximations of the exact relation between the pressure at the bed and the surface wave in the zero vorticity case, but they incorporate the effects of vorticity through solutions of the Rayleigh equation. Several examples are discussed.
We study the two dimensional water waves problem with surface tension in the case when there is a non-zero contact angle between the free surface and the bottom. In the presence of surface tension, dissipations take place at the contact point. Moreover, when the contact angle is less than $π/6$, no singularity appears in our settings. Using elliptic estimates in corner domains and a geometric approach, we prove an a priori estimate for the water waves problem.
We study the variable bottom generalized Korteweg-de Vries (bKdV) equation dt u=-dx(dx^2 u+f(u)-b(t,x)u), where f is a nonlinearity and b is a small, bounded and slowly varying function related to the varying depth of a channel of water. Many variable coefficient KdV-type equations, including the variable coefficient, variable bottom KdV equation, can be rescaled into the bKdV. We study the long time behaviour of solutions with initial conditions close to a stable, b=0 solitary wave. We prove that for long time intervals, such solutions have the form of the solitary wave, whose centre and scal…
In this paper, we study the motion of the free surface of a body of fluid over a variable bottom, in a long wave asymptotic regime. We assume that the bottom of the fluid region can be described by a stationary random process $β(x, ω)$ whose variations take place on short length scales and which are decorrelated on the length scale of the long waves. This is a question of homogenization theory in the scaling regime for the Boussinesq and KdV equations. The analysis is performed from the point of view of perturbation theory for Hamiltonian PDEs with a small parameter, in the context of which we…
The Riemann problem of one dimensional shallow water equations with discontinuous topography has been constructed recently. The elementary waves include shock waves, rarefaction waves, and the stationary wave. The stationary wave appears when the water depth changes, especially when there exists a bottom step. In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the interaction between a stationary wave with either a shock wave or a rarefaction wave. By using the characteristic analysis methods, the evolution of waves is described during the interaction process. The solution in large time scale is also…
