We focus here on the water waves problem for uneven bottoms in the long-wave regime, on an unbounded two or three-dimensional domain. In order to derive asymptotic models for this problem, we consider two different regimes of bottom topography, one for small variations in amplitude, and one for strong variations. Starting from the Zakharov formulation of this problem, we rigorously compute the asymptotics expansion of the involved Dirichlet-Neumann operator. then, following the global strategy introduced by Bona, Colin and Lannes, new symetric asymptotic models are derived for each regime of bottom topography. Solutions of these systems are proved to give good approximations of solutions of the water waves problem. These results hold for solutions that evanesce at infinity as well as for spatially periodic ones.
We prove the local existence for the Water Waves equations with large bathymetric variations on a time interval of size 1/ε, where $ε$ measures the amplitude of the wave. We just need the presence of surface tension.
We carry out the group classification of the class of two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable bottom topography using an optimized version of the method of furcate splitting. The equivalence group of this class is found by the algebraic method. Using algebraic techniques, we construct additional point equivalences between some of the listed cases of Lie-symmetry extensions, which are inequivalent up to transformations from the equivalence group.
In this paper we focus on the water waves problem for uneven bottoms on a two-dimensionnal domain. Starting from the symmetric Boussinesq systems derived in [Chazel, Influence of topography on long water waves, 2007], we recover the uncoupled Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) approximation justified by Schneider and Wayne for flat bottoms, and by Iguchi in the context of bottoms tending to zero at infinity at a substantial rate. The goal of this paper is to investigate the validity of this approximation for more general bathymetries. We exhibit two kinds of topography for which this approximation diverg…
We classify zeroth-order conservation laws of systems from the class of two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable bottom topography using an optimized version of the method of furcate splitting. The classification is carried out up to equivalence generated by the equivalence group of this class. We find additional point equivalences between some of the listed cases of extensions of the space of zeroth-order conservation laws, which are inequivalent up to transformations from the equivalence group. Hamiltonian structures of systems of shallow water equations are used for relating th…
In this paper, we investigate steady states of shallow water moment equations including bottom topographies. We derive a new hyperbolic shallow water moment model based on linearized moment equations that allows for a simple assessment of the steady states. After proving hyperbolicity of the new model, the steady states are fully identified. A well-balanced scheme is adopted to the specific structure of the new model and allows to preserve the steady states in numerical simulations.
The Riemann problem of one dimensional shallow water equations with discontinuous topography has been constructed recently. The elementary waves include shock waves, rarefaction waves, and the stationary wave. The stationary wave appears when the water depth changes, especially when there exists a bottom step. In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the interaction between a stationary wave with either a shock wave or a rarefaction wave. By using the characteristic analysis methods, the evolution of waves is described during the interaction process. The solution in large time scale is also…
This paper deals with global existence and uniqueness for the lake equations with a bottom topography vanishing on the shore. Our result generalizes previous studies that assumed the depth to be nondegenerate. Elliptic estimates for degenerate equations has to be established studying the behavior of the associated Green function.

We investigate the Riemann Problem for a shallow water model with porosity and terrain data. Based on recent results on the local existence, we build the solution in the large settings (the magnitude of the jump in the initial data is not supposed to be ``small enough''). One difficulty for the extended solution arises from the double degeneracy of the hyperbolic system describing the model. Another difficulty is given by the fact that the construction of the solution assumes solving an equation which has no global solution. Finally, we present some cases to illustrate the existence and non-ex…
We prove in this paper a long time existence result for a modified Boussinesq-Peregrine equation in one dimension, describing the motion of Water Waves in shallow water, in the case of a non flat bottom. We first give a local existence result for the original Boussinesq Peregrine equation as derived by Boussinesq and Peregrine in all dimensions. We then introduce a new model which has formally the same precision as the Boussinesq-Peregrine equation, and give a local existence result in all dimensions. We finally prove a long time existence result in dimension 1 for this new equation, without a…

We investigate the influence of the topography on the lake equations which describe the two-dimensional horizontal velocity of a three-dimensional incompressible flow. We show that the lake equations are structurally stable under Hausdorff approximations of the fluid domain and $L^p$ perturbations of the depth. As a byproduct, we obtain the existence of a weak solution to the lake equations in the case of singular domains and rough bottoms. Our result thus extends earlier works by Bresch and Métivier treating the lake equations with a fixed topography and by Gérard-Varet and Lacave treating th…
We study the beach problem for water waves. The case we consider is a compact fluid domain, where the free surface intersect the bottom along an edge, with a non-zero contact angle. Using elliptic estimates in domain with edges and a new equation on the Taylor coefficient, we establish a priori estimates, for angles smaller than a dimensional constant. Local existence will be derived in a following paper.
Given any suitably small, localized, and smooth initial data, in this paper, we prove global regularity for the $3D$ finite depth gravity water wave system. As a byproduct, we rule out the small, localized traveling waves in $3D$, which do exist for the same system in $2D$.
In this paper, we study the motion of the free surface of a body of fluid over a variable bottom, in a long wave asymptotic regime. We assume that the bottom of the fluid region can be described by a stationary random process $β(x, ω)$ whose variations take place on short length scales and which are decorrelated on the length scale of the long waves. This is a question of homogenization theory in the scaling regime for the Boussinesq and KdV equations. The analysis is performed from the point of view of perturbation theory for Hamiltonian PDEs with a small parameter, in the context of which we…
This is a study of the Euler equations for free surface water waves in the case of varying bathymetry, considering the problem in the shallow water scaling regime. In the case of rapidly varying periodic bottom boundaries this is a problem of homogenization theory. In this setting we derive a new model system of equations, consisting of the classical shallow water equations coupled with nonlocal evolution equations for a periodic corrector term. We also exhibit a new resonance phenomenon between surface waves and a periodic bottom. This resonance, which gives rise to secular growth of surface …
In this article we deal with a class of geometric inverse problem for bottom detection by one single measurement on the free surface in water--waves. We found upper and lower bounds for the size of the region enclosed between two different bottoms, in terms of Neumann and/or Dirichlet data on the free surface. Starting from the general water--waves system in bounded domains with side walls, we manage to formulate the problem in terms of the Dirichlet to Neumann operator and thus, as an elliptic problem in a bounded domain with Neumann homogeneous condition on the rigid boundary. Then we study …
As a starting point of studying the long time behavior of the $3D$ water waves system in the flat bottom setting, in this paper, we try to improve the understanding of the Dirichlet-Neumann operator in this setting. As an application, we study the $3D$ gravity waves system and derive a new $L^2-L^\infty$ type energy estimate, which has a good structure in the $L^\infty-$type space. In our second paper, base on the results we obtained in this paper, we prove the global regularity of the $3D$ gravity waves system for suitably small initial data.
In this paper we consider the 1D Green-Naghdi system over a nonflat bottom. This system describes the evolution of water waves over an uneven bottom in the shallow water regime in terms of the water depth $h$ and the horizontal velocity $u$. Using a Lagrangian formulation of this system on a Sobolev type diffeomorphism group we prove local well-posedness for $(h,u)$ in the Sobolev space $(1+H^s(\mathbb R)) \times H^{s+1}(\mathbb R),\; s > 1/2$. This improves the local well-posedness range.
The Green-Naghdi equations are a nonlinear dispersive perturbation of the nonlinear shallow water equations, more precise by one order of approximation. These equations are commonly used for the simulation of coastal flows, and in particular in regions where the water depth vanishes (the shoreline). The local well-posedness of the Green-Naghdi equations (and their justification as an asymptotic model for the water waves equations) has been extensively studied, but always under the assumption that the water depth is bounded from below by a positive constant. The aim of this article is to remove…
We present two accurate and efficient algorithms for solving the incompressible, irrotational Euler equations with a free surface in two dimensions with background flow over a periodic, multiply-connected fluid domain that includes stationary obstacles and variable bottom topography. One approach is formulated in terms of the surface velocity potential while the other evolves the vortex sheet strength. Both methods employ layer potentials in the form of periodized Cauchy integrals to compute the normal velocity of the free surface, are compatible with arbitrary parameterizations of the free su…
We consider the two-dimensional shallow water model derived by Levermore and Sammartino (Nonlinearity 14,2001), describing the motion of an incompressible fluid, confined in a shallow basin, with varying bottom topography. We construct the approximate inertial manifolds for the associated dynamical system and estimate its order. Finally, considering the whole domain R^2 and under suitable conditions on the time dependent forcing term, we prove the L^2 asymptotic decay of the weak solutions.
In this paper we derive and prove the wellposedness of a deep water model that generalizes the Saut-Xu system for nonflat bottoms. Then, we present a new numerical method based on a splitting approach for studying this system. The advantage of this method is that it does not require any low pass filter to avoid spurious oscillations. We prove a local error estimate and we show that our scheme represents a good approximation of order one in time. Then, we perform some numerical experiments which confirm our theoretical result and we study three physical phenomena : the evolution of water waves …
We study here the water-waves problem for uneven bottoms in a highly nonlinear regime where the small amplitude assumption of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is enforced. It is known, that for such regimes, a generalization of the KdV equation (somehow linked to the Camassa-Holm equation) can be derived and justified by A. Constantin, D. Lannes "The hydrodynamical relevance of the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Processi equations" when the bottom is flat. We generalize here this result with a new class of equations taking into account variable bottom topographies. Of course, the many variabl…
In this paper we address a particular fluid-solid interaction problem in which the solid object is lying at the bottom of a layer of fluid and moves under the forces created by waves travelling on the surface of this layer. More precisely, we consider the water waves problem in a fluid of fixed depth with a flat bottom topography and with an object lying on the bottom, allowed to move horizontally under the pressure forces created by the waves. After establishing the physical setting of the problem, namely the dynamics of the fluid and the mechanics of the solid motion, as well as analyzing th…
In the vast literature on tsunami research, few articles have been devoted to energy issues. A theoretical investigation on the energy of waves generated by bottom motion is performed here. We start with the full incompressible Euler equations in the presence of a free surface and derive both dispersive and non-dispersive shallow-water equations with an energy equation. It is shown that dispersive effects only appear at higher order in the energy budget. Then we solve the Cauchy-Poisson problem of tsunami generation for the linearized water wave equations. Exchanges between potential and kinet…

We provide rigorous asymptotic models for the free boundary Darcy and Forchheimer problem under the assumption of weak nonlinear interaction, in a regime in which the steepness parameter of the interface is considered to be very small. The models we derive capture the nonlinear interaction of the original free boundary Darcy and Forchheimer problem up to quadratic terms. Furthermore, we provide models that consider both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases, with and without bottom topography.
An explicit expression for the Dirichlet-Neumann operator for surface water waves is presented. For non-overturning waves, but without assuming small amplitudes, the formula is first derived in two dimensions, subsequently extrapolated in higher dimensions and with a moving bottom. Although described here for water waves, this elementary approach could be adapted to many other problems having similar mathematical formulations.
The system of equations for water waves, when linearized about equilibrium of a fluid body with a varying bottom boundary, is described by a spectral problem for the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator of the unperturbed free surface. This spectral problem is fundamental in questions of stability, as well as to the perturbation theory of evolution of the free surface in such settings. In addition, the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator is self-adjoint when given an appropriate definition and domain, and it is a novel but very natural spectral problem for a nonlocal operator. In the case in which the bott…
