In this article we study the problem of recovering the initial data of the two-dimensional wave equation from Neumann measurements on a convex domain with smooth boundary in the plane. We derive an explicit inversion formula of a so-called back-projection type and deduce exact inversion formulas for circular and elliptical domains. In addition, for circular domains, we show that the initial data can also be recovered from any linear combination of its solution and its normal derivative on the boundary. Numerical results of our implementation of the derived inversion formulas are presented demonstrating their accuracy and stability.
We prove trace and extension results for fractional Sobolev spaces of order $s\in(0,1)$. These spaces are used in the study of nonlocal Dirichlet and Neumann problems on bounded domains. The results are robust in the sense that the continuity of the trace and extension operators is uniform as $s$ approaches $1$ and our trace spaces converge to $H^{1/2}(\partial Ω)$. We apply these results in order to study the convergence of solutions of nonlocal Neumann problems as the integro-differential operators localize to a symmetric, second order operator in divergence form.
We study the problem of recovering the initial data (f, 0) of the standard wave equation from the Neumann trace (the normal derivative) of the solution on the boundary of convex domains in arbitrary spatial dimension. Among others, this problem is relevant for tomographic image reconstruction including photoacoustic tomography. We establish explicit inversion formulas of the back-projection type that recover the initial data up to an additive term defined by a smoothing integral operator. In the case that the boundary of the domain is an ellipsoid, the integral operator vanishes, and hence we …
We establish the well-posedness of the Neumann problem for stochastic conservation laws with multiplicative noise. As a major step for establishing the uniqueness of the kinetic solution to the referred problem we establish the new strong trace property for stochastic conservation laws. Existence of kinetic solutions is proved through the vanishing viscosity method and the detailed analysis of the corresponding stochastic parabolic problem is also made here for the first time, as far as the authors know.

We show that trapezoids with identical Neumann spectra are congruent up to rigid motions of the plane. The proof is based on heat trace invariants and some new wave trace invariants associated to certain diffractive billiard trajectories. The reason we can only treat the Neumann case is that the wave trace is "more singular" for the Neumann case compared to the Dirichlet case. This is a new observation which is interesting on its own.
We investigate the monotonicity method for fractional semilinear elliptic equations with power type nonlinearities. We prove that if-and-only-if monotonicity relations between coefficients and the derivative of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map hold. Based on the strong monotonicity relations, we study a constructive global uniqueness for coefficients and inclusion detection for the fractional Calderón type inverse problem. Meanwhile, we can also derive the Lipschitz stability with finitely many measurements. The results hold for any $n\geq 1$.
This paper is devoted to study the asymptotic expansion of the heat trace of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the thermoelastic equation on a Riemannian manifold with doundary. By providing a method we can obtain all the coefficients of the asymptotic expansion. In particular, we explicitly give the first two coefficients involving the volume and the total mean curvature of the boundary.
We consider a second-order hyperbolic equation on an open bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\geq2$, with $C^2$-boundary $Γ=\paΩ=\bar{Γ_0\cupΓ_1}$, $Γ_0\capΓ_1=\emptyset$, subject to non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on the entire boundary $Γ$. We then study the inverse problem of determining the interior damping coefficient of the equation by means of an additional measurement of the Dirichlet boundary trace of the solution, in a suitable, explicit sub-portion $Γ_1$ of the boundary $Γ$, and over a computable time interval $T>0$. Under sharp conditions on the complementary pa…
We consider the inverse problems of for the fractional Schrödinger equation by using monotonicity formulas. We provide if-and-only-if monotonicity relations between positive bounded potentials and their associated nonlocal Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps. Based on the monotonicity relation, we can prove uniqueness for the nonlocal Calderón problem in a constructive manner. Secondly, we offer a reconstruction method for an unknown obstacles in a given domain. Our method is independent of the dimension $n\geq 2$ and only requires the background solution of the fractional Schrödinger equation.
We consider a restricted Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to a wave type operator on a Riemannian manifold with boundary. The restriction corresponds to the case where the Dirichlet traces are supported on one subset of the boundary and the Neumann traces are restricted on another subset. We show that the restricted Dirichlet-to-Neumann map determines the lower order terms in the wave equation, up the natural gauge invariances, along a convex foliation of the manifold. We allow the lower order terms to be non-self-adjoint, and in particular, the corresponding physical system may have dissip…
For a given bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary in a smooth Riemannian manifold $(\mathcal{M},g)$, we show that the Poisson type upper-estimate of the heat kernel associated to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, the Sobolev trace inequality, the Log-Sobolev trace inequality, the Nash trace inequality, and the Rozenblum-Lieb-Cwikel type inequality are all equivalent. Upon decomposing the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator into a sum of the square root of the Laplacian and a pseudodifferntial operator and by applying Grubb's method of symbolic calculus for the corresponding pseudodifferential hea…
We prove a continuous embedding that allows us to obtain a boundary trace imbedding result for anisotropic Musielak-Orlicz spaces, which we then apply to obtain an existence result for Neumann problems with nonlinearities on the boundary associated to some anisotropic nonlinear elliptic equations in Musielak-Orlicz spaces constructed from Musielak-Orlicz functions on which and on their conjugates we do not assume the $Δ_2$-condition. The uniqueness is also studied.
We classify positive solutions to a class of quasilinear equations with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions in convex domains. Our main tool is an integral formula involving the trace of some relevant quantities for the problem. Under a suitable condition on the nonlinearity, a relevant consequence of our results is that we can extend to weak solutions a celebrated result obtained for stable solutions by Casten and Holland and by Matano.
We consider a spectral optimal design problem involving the Neumann traces of the Dirichlet-Laplacian eigenfunctions on a smooth bounded open subset $Ω$ of $\R^n$. The cost functional measures the amount of energy that Dirichlet eigenfunctions concentrate on the boundary and that can be recovered with a bounded density function. We first prove that, assuming a $L^1$ constraint on densities, the so-called {\it Rellich functions} maximize this functional.Motivated by several issues in shape optimization or observation theory where it is relevant to deal with bounded densities, and noticing that …
Boundary value problems for second-order elliptic equations in divergence form, whose nonlinearity is governed by a convex function of non-necessarily power type, are considered. The global boundedness of their solutions is established under boundary conditions of Dirichlet, or Neumann, or Robin type. A decisive role in the results is played by optimal forms of Orlicz-Sobolev embeddings and boundary trace embeddings, which allow for critical growths of the coefficients.
We consider a bounded connected open set $Ω\subset {\rm R}^d$ whose boundary $Γ$ has a finite $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Then we define the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $D_0$ on $L_2(Γ)$ by form methods. The operator $-D_0$ is self-adjoint and generates a contractive $C_0$-semigroup $S = (S_t)_{t > 0}$ on $L_2(Γ)$. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of $S_t$ as $t \to \infty$ is related to properties of the trace of functions in $H^1(Ω)$ which $Ω$ may or may not have.
Magneto-Acousto-Electric Tomography (MAET), also known as the Lorentz force or Hall effect tomography, is a novel hybrid modality designed to be a high-resolution alternative to the unstable Electrical Impedance Tomography. In the present paper we analyze existing mathematical models of this method, and propose a general procedure for solving the inverse problem associated with MAET. It consists in applying to the data one of the algorithms of Thermo-Acoustic tomography, followed by solving the Neumann problem for the Laplace equation and the Poisson equation. For the particular case when the …
We consider an elliptic Kolmogorov equation lambda u - Ku =f in a convex subset C of a separable Hilbert space X. We prove maximal Sobolev regularity of its weak solution, when lambda >0 and f is in L^2(C,nu), where nu is the log-concave measure associated to the system. Moreover we prove maximal estimates on the gradient of u, that allow to show that u satisfies the Neumann boundary condition in the sense of traces at the boundary of C. The general results are applied to Kolmogorov equations of reaction-diffusion stochastic PDEs and Cahn-Hilliard stochastic PDEs in convex sets of suitable Hil…
Let $L$ be a Neumann operator of the form $L=-Δ_{N}$ acting on $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$. Let ${BMO}_{Δ_{N}}(\mathbb R^n)$ denote the BMO space on $\mathbb R^n$ associated to the Neumann operator $Ł$. In this article we will show that a function $f\in { BMO}_{Δ_{N}}(\mathbb R^n)$ is the trace of the solution of $${\mathbb L}u=u_{t}+L u=0, u(x,0)= f(x),$$ where $u$ satisfies a Carleson-type condition \begin{eqnarray*} \sup_{x_B, r_B} r_B^{-n}\int_0^{r_B^2}\int_{B(x_B, r_B)} |\nabla u(x,t)|^2 {dx dt } \leq C <\infty, \end{eqnarray*} for some constant $C>0$. Conversely, this Carleson condition character…
We establish inversion formulas of the so called filtered back-projection type to recover a function supported in the ball in even dimensions from its spherical means over spheres centered on the boundary of the ball. We also find several formulas to recover initial data of the form (f,0) (or (0,g)) for the free space wave equation in even dimensions from the trace of the solution on the boundary of the ball, provided the initial data has support in the ball.
We consider the ultrasound imaging problem governed by a nonlinear wave equation of Westervelt type with variable wave speed. We show that the coefficient of nonlinearity can be recovered uniquely from knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Our proof is based on a second order linearization and the use of Gaussian beam solutions to reduce the problem to the inversion of a weighted geodesic ray transform. We propose an inversion algorithm and report the results of a numerical implementation to solve the nonlinear ultrasound imaging problem in a transmission setting in the frequency domain.
In this work, we use monotonicity-based methods for the fractional Schrödinger equation with general potentials $q\in L^\infty(Ω)$ in a Lipschitz bounded open set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ in any dimension $n\in \mathbb N$. We demonstrate that if-and-only-if monotonicity relations between potentials and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map hold up to a finite dimensional subspace. Based on these if-and-only-if monotonicity relations, we derive a constructive global uniqueness results for the fractional Calderón problem and its linearized version. We also derive a reconstruction method for unknown obstacl…
We consider a mixed type boundary value problem for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations. Namely, we consider a Cartesian product domain and split its boundary into two parts. In one of them we impose a Dirichlet boundary condition; in the other, we impose a Neumann condition. We apply a normal trace formula for $L^2$-divergence-measure fields to prove a new strong trace property in the part of the boundary where the Neumann condition is imposed. We prove existence and uniqueness of the entropy solution. This is a revised corrected version of the paper published in Arch.\ Ratio…
We consider the problem of recovering the initial value, from the trace on the light cone, of the solution of an initial value problem for the wave equation. When the space is odd dimensional, we show that the map from the initial value to the traces of the (even or odd in time) solutions on the light cone is an isometry and we characterize the range of this map and construct its inverse. We do this by relating the problem to the recovery of a function from its spherical means over all spheres through the origin, which in turn is related to the Radon transform inversion via the inversion map o…
We employ a variational approach to study the Neumann boundary value problem for the $p$-Laplacian on bounded smooth-enough domains in the metric setting, and show that solutions exist and are bounded. The boundary data considered are Borel measurable bounded functions. We also study boundary continuity properties of the solutions. One of the key tools utilized is the trace theorem for Newton-Sobolev functions, and another is an analog of the De Giorgi inequality adapted to the Neumann problem.
We present a way of defining the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on general Hilbert spaces using a pair of operators for which each one's adjoint is formally the negative of the other. In particular, we define an abstract analogue of trace spaces and are able to give meaning to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of divergence form operators perturbed by a bounded potential in cases where the boundary of the underlying domain does not allow for a well-defined trace. Moreover, a representation of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator as a first-order system of partial differential operators is provided…
In this paper we study the self-adjoint Krein-von Neumann realization $A_K$ of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an explicit and self-contained description of the domain of $A_K$ in terms of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary traces, and we establish a Weyl asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues of $A_K$.
This paper is devoted to investigate the heat trace asymptotic expansion corresponding to the magnetic Steklov eigenvalue problem on Riemannian manifolds with boundary. We establish an effective procedure, by which we can calculate all the coefficients $a_0$, $a_1$, $\dots$, $a_{n-1}$ of the heat trace asymptotic expansion. In particular, we explicitly give the expressions for the first four coefficients. These coefficients are spectral invariants which provide precise information concerning the volume and curvatures of the boundary of the manifold and some physical quantities by the magnetic …
We prove a trace formula for three-dimensional spherically symmetric Riemannian manifolds with boundary which satisfy the Herglotz condition: The wave trace is singular precisely at the length spectrum of periodic broken rays. In particular, the Neumann spectrum of the Laplace--Beltrami operator uniquely determines the length spectrum. The trace formula also applies for the toroidal modes of the free oscillations in the earth. We then prove that the length spectrum is rigid: Deformations preserving the length spectrum and spherical symmetry are necessarily trivial in any dimension, provided th…
In this paper, we study the boundary traces of eigenfunctions on the boundary of a smooth and bounded domain. An identity derived by Bäcker, Fürstburger, Schubert, and Steiner, expressing (in some sense) the asymptotic completeness of the set of boundary traces in a frequency window of size O(1), is proved both for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We then prove a semiclassical generalization of this identity.
An efficient solver based on low-rank approximation and Neumann matrix series for unsteady diffusion-type partial differential equations with random coefficients
The Cauchy problem for the von Neumann hierarchy of nonlinear equations is investigated. One describes the evolution of all possible states of quantum many-particle systems by the correlation operators. A solution of such nonlinear equations is constructed in the form of an expansion over particle clusters whose evolution is described by the corresponding order cumulant (semi-invariant) of evolution operators for the von Neumann equations. For the initial data from the space of sequences of trace class operators the existence of a strong and a weak solution of the Cauchy problem is proved. We …

An extremely simple single-trace transmission example shows how an extended source formulation of full waveform inversion can produce an optimization problem without spurious local minima ("cycle skipping"). The data consist of a single trace recorded at a given distance from a point source. The velocity or slowness is presumed homogeneous, and the target source wavelet is presumed quasi-impulsive or focused at zero time lag. The source is extended by permitting energy to spread in time, and the spread is controlled by adding a weighted mean square of the extended source wavelet to the data mi…
