Let $X$ and $Y$ be smooth projective varieties over $\mathbb{C}$. They are called {\it $D$-equivalent} if their derived categories of bounded complexes of coherent sheaves are equivalent as triangulated categories, while {\it $K$-equivalent} if they are birationally equivalent and the pull-backs of their canonical divisors to a common resolution coincide. We expect that the two equivalences coincide at least for birationally equivalent varieties. We shall provide a partial answer to the above problem in this paper.
We give an example of a pair of projective symplectic varieties in arbitrarily large dimensions which are D-equivalent, L-equivalent, and birationally inequivalent.
A conjecture of Pukhlikov states that a smooth Fano variety of dimension at least four and index one is birationally rigid. We show that a general member of the linear system given by the ample generator of the Picard group of the moduli space of stable, rank two bundles with fixed determinant of odd degree on a curve of genus at least three, is not birationally rigid.
We prove that a general Fano fibration $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a double Fano hypersurface of index 1, is birationally superrigid provided it is sufficiently twisted over the base. In particular, on $V$ there are no other structures of a rationally connected fibration. The proof is based on the method of maximal singularities.
We give a brief survey of the concept of birational rigidity, from its origins in the two-dimensional birational geometry, to its current state. The main ingredients of the method of maximal singularities are discussed. The principal results of the theory of birational rigidity of higher-dimensional Fano varieties and fibrations are given and certain natural conjectures are formulated.
We complete the study of birational geometry of Fano fiber spaces $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a Fano double hypersurface of index 1. For each family of these varieties we either prove birational rigidity or produce explicitly non-trivial structures of Fano fiber spaces. A new linear method of studying movable systems on Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$ is developed.
Iterating the procedure of making a double cover over a given variety, we construct large families of smooth higher-dimensional Fano varieties of index 1. These varieties can be realized as complete intersections in various weighted projective spaces. A generic variety in these families is proved to be birationally superrigid; in particular, it admits no non-trivial structures of a fibration into rationally connected (or uniruled) varieties, it is non-rational and its groups of birational and biregular self-maps coincide.
We continue to study birational geometry of Fano fibrations $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$ the fibers of which are Fano double hypersurfaces of index 1. For a majority of families of this type, which do not satisfy the condition of sufficient twistedness over the base, we prove birational rigidity (in particular, it means that there are no other structures of a fibration into rationally connected varieties) and compute their groups of birational self-maps. We considerably improve the principal components of the method of maximal singularities, in the first place, the technique of counting multip…
We prove that every birationally superrigid Fano variety whose alpha invariant is greater than (resp. no smaller than) $\frac{1}{2}$ is K-stable (resp. K-semistable). We also prove that the alpha invariant of a birationally superrigid Fano variety of dimension $n$ is at least $\frac{1}{n+1}$ (under mild assumptions) and that the moduli space (if exists) of birationally superrigid Fano varieties is separated.
This is a continuation of a series of papers studying the birational Mori fiber structures of anticanonically embedded $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold weighted complete intersections of codimension $2$. We have proved that $19$ families consists of birationally rigid varieties and $14$ families consists of birationally birigid varieties. The aim of this paper is to continue the work systematically and prove that, among the remaining $52$ families, $21$ families consist of birationally birigid varieties.
We prove that the r-th pluricanonical maps of threefolds of general type have birationally bounded fibers if $r\geqslant 2$. Similarly, we prove that the r-th pluricanonical maps of fourfolds of general type have birationally bounded fibers if $r\geqslant 4$. We extend these results to higher dimensions in terms of constants arising naturally from the birational geometry of varieties of general type.
We prove that a smooth Fano hypersurface $V=V_M\subset{\Bbb P}^M$, $M\geq 6$, is birationally superrigid. In particular, it cannot be fibered into uniruled varieties by a non-trivial rational map and each birational map onto a minimal Fano variety of the same dimension is a biregular isomorphism. The proof is based on the method of maximal singularities combined with the connectedness principle of Shokurov and Koll\' ar.
We prove that the standard norm varieties for Milnor symbols mod p of length n are birationally isomorphic to Pfister quadrics when p = 2, to Severi-Brauer varieties when p > 2, n = 2, and to varieties defined by reduced norms of cyclic algebras when p > 2, n = 3. In the case p = 2 and the case p > 2, n = 2, the results imply that the standard norm varieties for two equal Milnor symbols mod p are birationally isomorphic, and we conjecture this in general.
The theory of $Θ$-stratifications generalizes a classical stratification of the moduli of vector bundles on a smooth curve, the Harder-Narasimhan-Shatz stratification, to any moduli problem that can be represented by an algebraic stack. Using derived algebraic geometry, we develop a structure theory, which is a refinement of the theory of local cohomology, for the derived category of quasi-coherent complexes on an algebraic stack equipped with a $Θ$-stratification. We then apply this to the $D$-equivalence conjecture, which predicts that birationally equivalent Calabi-Yau manifolds have equiva…
Let $f: X\to Y$ be a surjective morphism of smooth $n$-dimensional projective varieties, with $Y$ of maximal Albanese dimension. Hacon and Pardini studied the structure of $f$ assuming $P_m(X)=P_m(Y)$ for some $m\geq 2$. We extend their result by showing that, under the above assumtions, $f$ is birationally equivalent to a quotient by a finite abelian group. We also study the pluricanonical map of varieties of maximal Albanese dimesnion. The main result is that the linear series $|5K_X|$ incuces the Iitaka model of $X$.
Let X be a normal affine T-variety, where T stands for the algebraic torus. We classify Ga-actions on X arising from homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations of fiber type. We deduce that any variety with trivial Makar-Limanov (ML) invariant is birationally decomposable as Y\times P^2, for some Y. Conversely, given a variety Y, there exists an affine variety X with trivial ML invariant birational to Y\times P^2. Finally, we introduce a new version of the ML invariant, called the FML invariant. According to our conjecture, the triviality of the FML invariant implies rationality. This conjectur…
Let $X$ be a complex quasiprojective variety. A result of Noguchi-Winkelmann-Yamanoi shows that if $X$ admits a Zariski dense entire curve, then its quasi-Albanese map is a fiber space. We show that the orbifold structure induced by a properly birationally equivalent map on the base is special in this case. As a consequence, if $X$ is of log-general type with $\bar q(X)\geq\dim X$, then any entire curve is contained in a proper subvariety in $X$.
We study derived equivalences of Abelian varieties in terms of their associated symplectic data. For simple Abelian varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero we prove that the natural correspondence introduced by Orlov, which maps equivalences to symplectic isomorphisms, is surjective.
In this paper we construct a tilting sheaf for Severi-Brauer Varieties and Involution Varieties. This sheaf relates the derived category of each variety to the derived category of modules over a ring whose semisimple component consists of the Tits algebras of the corresponding linear algebraic group.
In the first part of this paper, we show that the assertion "T_pH_k(X,Q)=G_pH_k(X,Q)" (which is called the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture) is a birationally invariant statement for smooth projective varieties X when p=dim(X)-2 and when p=1. We also establish the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture in certain dimensions. More precisely, for a smooth projective variety X, we show that the topological filtration T_pH_{2p+1}(X,Q) coincides with the geometric filtration G_pH_{2p+1}(X,Q) for all p. (Friedlander and Mazur had previously shown that T_pH_{2p}(X,Q})=G_pH_{2p}(X,Q)). As a corollary, we conclude t…
Let $X \to S$ be a miniversal family of smooth and projective varieties and D be a fixed triangulated category. We show that the set of points s in S such that the derived category of the fiber X_s at s is equivalent to D is at most countable. We deduce from this that the derived equivalence classes of smooth and projective complex varieties is at most countable.
We show that any derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties of dimension 3 over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ have equal zeta functions. This result is an application of the extension to smooth, projective varieties over any field of Popa and Schnell's proof that derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ have isogenous Albanese torsors; this result is proven in an appendix by Achter, Casalaina-Martin, Honigs and Vial.
In this paper, we discuss the problem of whether the difference $[X]-[Y]$ of the classes of a Fourier--Mukai pair $(X, Y)$ of smooth projective varieties in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is annihilated by some power of the class $\mathbb{L} = [ \mathbb{A}^1 ]$ of the affine line. We give an affirmative answer for Fourier--Mukai pairs of very general K3 surfaces of degree 12. On the other hand, we prove that in each dimension greater than one, there exists an abelian variety such that the difference with its dual is not annihilated by any power of $\mathbb{L}$, thereby giving a negative an…
Batyrev (et. al.) constructed a family of Calabi-Yau varieties using small toric degenerations of the full flag variety G/B. They conjecture this family to be mirror to generic anti-canonical hypersurfaces in G/B. Recently Alexeev and Brion, as a part of their work on toric degenerations of spherical varieties, have constructed many degenerations of G/B. For any such degeneration we construct a family of varieties, which we prove coincides with Batyrev's in the small case. We prove that any two such families are birational, thus proving that mirror families are independent of the choice of deg…
Motivic equivalence for algebraic groups was recently introduced in [9], where a characterization of motivic equivalent groups in terms of higher Tits indexes is given. As a consequence, if the quadrics associated to two quadratic forms have the same Chow motives with coefficients in F_2, this remains true for any two projective homogeneous varieties of the same type under the orthogonal groups of those two quadratic forms. Our main result extends this to all groups of classical type, and to some exceptional groups, introducing a notion of critical variety. On the way, we prove that motivic eq…
We prove derived equivalence of Calabi-Yau threefolds constructed by Ito-Miura-Okawa-Ueda as an example of non-birational Calabi-Yau varieties whose difference in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is annihilated by the affine line.
Let $ Y \subseteq \Bbb P^N $ be a possibly singular projective variety, defined over the field of complex numbers. Let $X$ be the intersection of $Y$ with $h$ general hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degrees. Let $d>0$ be an integer, and assume that $\dim Y=n+h$ and $ \dim Y_{sing} \le \min\{ d+h-1 , n-1 \} $. Let $Z$ be an algebraic cycle on $Y$ of dimension $d+h$, whose homology class in $H_{2(d+h)}(Y; \Bbb Q)$ is non-zero. In the present paper we prove that the restriction of $Z$ to $X$ is not algebraically equivalent to zero. This is a generalization to the singular case of a result due…
We study the equivalence between infinitesimal Torelli theorem for smooth hypersurfaces in rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number one and the theory of generalized Massey products. This equivalence shows that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain twisted differential forms are elements of the Jacobian ideal of the hypersurface. We also prove an infinitesimal Torelli theorem result for smooth hypersurfaces in log parallelizable varieties.
The theorem of Hilbert- Burch provides a description of codimension two determinantal varieties and their deformations in terms of their presentation matrices. In this work we use this correspondence to study properties of determinantal varieties, based on methods of singularity theory. We establish the theory of singularities for nxp matrices extending previous results of Bruce and Tari and Frühbis-Krüger. The main result of this work is the description of equivalent conditions to G-finite determinacy of the presentation matrix of Cohen-Macaulay varieties of codimension 2. We apply the result…
The category of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is shown to be anti-equivalent to a category of $\mathbb{Z}$-lattices that are modules for a non-commutative pro-ring of endomorphisms of a suitably chosen direct system of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$. On full subcategories cut out by a finite set $w$ of conjugacy classes of Weil $q$-numbers, the anti-equivalence is represented by what we call $w$-locally projective abelian varieties.
We prove analogs of Whitehead's theorem (from algebraic topology) for both the Chow groups and for the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves: a morphism between smooth projective varieties whose pushforward is an isomorphism on the Chow groups, or on the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves, is an isomorphism. As a corollary, we show that there are no nontrivial naive $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy equivalences between smooth projective varieties.
We study the behavior of cohomological support loci of the canonical bundle under derived equivalence of smooth projective varieties. This is achieved by investigating the derived invariance of a generalized version of Hochschild homology. Furthermore, using techniques coming from birational geometry, we establish the derived invariance of the Albanese dimension for varieties having non-negative Kodaira dimension. We apply our machinery to study the derived invariance of the holomorphic Euler characteristic and of certain Hodge numbers for special classes of varieties. Further applications con…
For a pair of affine toric varieties X and Y defined by dual cones, we define an equivalence between two triangulated categories. The first is a mixed version of the equivariant derived category of X and the second is a mixed version of the derived category of sheaves on Y which are locally constant with unipotent monodromy on each orbit. This equivalence satisfies the Koszul duality formalism of Beilinson, Ginzburg, and Soergel. A similar duality was constructed in math.AG/0308216; this new approach is more canonical.
Two semisimple algebraic groups of the same type are said to be motivic equivalent if the motives of the associated projective homogeneous varieties of the same type are isomorphic. We give general criteria of motivic equivalence in terms of the so-called higher Tits p-indices of algebraic groups. These results allow to give a complete classification of absolutely simple classical groups up to motivic equivalence in terms of the underlying algebraic structures. Among other applications of this classification, we deduce that there is a bijection between the stable birational equivalence classes…
In [A. Aguglia, A. Cossidente, G. Korchmaros, "On quasi-Hermitian varieties", J. Comb. Des. 20 (2012), 433-447] new quasi-Hermitian varieties ${\mathcal M}_{α,β}$ in $\mathrm{PG}(r,q^2)$ depending on a pair of parameters $α,β$ from the underlying field $\mathrm{GF}(q^2)$ have been constructed. In the present paper we determine the projective equivalence classes of such varieties for $r=3$ and $q$ odd.
We study the existence and properties of birationally equivalent models for elliptically fibered varieties. In particular these have either the structure of Mori fiber spaces or, assuming some standard conjectures, minimal models with a Zariski decomposition compatible with the elliptic fibration. We prove relations between the birational invariants of the elliptically fibered variety, the base of the fibration and of its Jacobian.
We study Fourier-Mukai transforms for smooth projective varieties whose canonical bundles have finite order, and relate them to equivariant transforms on certain finite covering spaces. Our results lead to new equivalences of derived categories for Enriques and bielliptic surfaces.
A well-known cancellation problem asks when, for two algebraic varieties $V_1, V_2 \subseteq {\bf C}^n$, the isomorphism of the cylinders $V_1 \times {\bf C}$ and $V_2 \times {\bf C}$ implies the isomorphism of $V_1$ and $V_2$. In this paper, we address a related problem: when the equivalence (under an automorphism of ${\bf C}^{n+1}$) of two cylinders $V_1 \times {\bf C}$ and $V_2 \times {\bf C}$ implies the equivalence of their bases $V_1$ and $V_2$ under an automorphism of ${\bf C}^n$? We concentrate here on hypersurfaces and show that this problem establishes a strong connection between the…
We study orbits for rational equivalence of zero-cycles on very general abelian varieties by adapting a method of Voisin to powers of abelian varieties. We deduce that, for $k$ at least $3$, a very general abelian variety of dimension at least $2k-2$ has covering gonality greater than $k$. This settles a conjecture of Voisin. We also discuss how upper bounds for the dimension of orbits for rational equivalence can be used to provide new lower bounds on other measures of irrationality. In particular, we obtain a strengthening of the Alzati-Pirola bound on the degree of irrationality of abelian …
We prove that torsion codimension 2 algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on supersingular abelian varieties are algebraically equivalent to zero. As a consequence, we prove that homological equivalence coincides with algebraic equivalence for algebraic cycles of codimension 2 on supersingular abelian varieties over the algebraic closure of finite fields.
