Suppose given a Galois etale cover Y -> X of proper non-singular curves over an algebraically closed field k of prime characteristic p. Let H be its Galois group, and G any finite extension of H by a p-group P. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on G to be the Galois group of an etale cover of X dominating Y -> X.
Using an alternative notion of good reduction, an analog of the Shafarevich theorem for elliptic curves is proved for morphisms of the projective line over number fields.
We prove a dynamical Shafarevich theorem on the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of rational maps with fixed degeneracies. More precisely, fix an integer d at least 2 and let K be either a number field or the function field of a curve X over a field k, where k is of characteristic zero or p>2d-2 that is either algebraically closed or finite. Let S be a finite set of places of K. We prove the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of rational maps over K with a natural kind of good reduction outside of S. We also prove auxiliary results on finiteness of reduced effective divis…
For a non-isotrivial family of surfaces of general type over a complex projective curve, we give upper bounds for the degree of the direct images of powers of the relative dualizing sheaf. They imply that, fixing the curve and the possible degeneration locus, the induced morphisms to the moduli scheme of stable surfaces of general type are parameterized by a scheme of finite type. The method extends to families of canonically polarized manifolds, but the modular interpretation requires the existence of relative minimal models.
We obtain a lower estimate for the Hilbert series of Jacobi algebras and their completions by providing analogue of the Golog-Shafarevich-Vinberg theorem for potential case. We especially treat non-homogeneous situation. This estimate allows to answer number of questions arising in the work of Wemyss-Donovan-Brown on noncommutative singularities and deformation theory. In particular, we prove that the only case when a potential algebra or its completion could be finite dimensional or of linear growth, is the case of two variables and potential having terms of degree three.
We prove finiteness results for Tate--Shafarevich groups in degree 2 associated with 1--motives, rely them to Leopoldt's conjecture, and present an example of a semiabelian variety with an infinite Tate--Shafarevich group in degree 2. We also establish an arithmetic duality theorem for 1--motives over number fields which complements earlier results of Harari and Szamuely in this direction.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finitely generated field $K$ of characteristic $p>0$. We proved that the finiteness of the $\ell$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{K^s})^{G_K}$ for a single prime $\ell\neq p$ will imply the finiteness of the prime-to-$p$ part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{K^s})^{G_K}$, generalizing a theorem of Tate and Lichtenbaum for varieties over finite fields. For an abelian variety $A$ over $K$, we proved a similar result for the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$, generalizing a theorem of Schneider for abelian varieties over global function fields.
We prove a finiteness theorem for the first flat cohomology group of finite flat group schemes over integral normal proper varieties over finite fields. As a consequence, we can prove the invariance of the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of Abelian schemes over higher dimensional bases under isogenies and alterations over/of such bases for the $p$-part. Along the way, we generalize previous results on the Tate-Shafarevich group in this situation.
Under a non-torsion assumption on Heegner points, results of Kolyvagin describe the structure of Shafarevich-Tate groups of elliptic curves. In this paper we prove analogous results for ($p$-primary) Shafarevich-Tate groups associated with higher weight modular forms over imaginary quadratic fields satisfying a "Heegner hypothesis". More precisely, we show that the structure of Shafarevich-Tate groups is controlled by cohomology classes built out of Nekovář's Heegner cycles on Kuga-Sato varieties. As an application of our main theorem, we improve on a result of Besser giving a bound on the ord…
Let $\mathcal X$ be a regular variety, flat and proper over a complete regular curve over a finite field, such that the generic fiber $X$ is smooth and geometrically connected. We prove that the Brauer group of $\mathcal X$ is finite if and only Tate's conjecture for divisors on $X$ holds and the Tate-Shafarevich group of the Albanese variety of $X$ is finite, generalizing a theorem of Artin and Grothendieck for surfaces to arbitrary relative dimension. We also give a formula relating the orders of the group under the assumption that they are finite, generalizing the formula given for a surfac…
We calculate the Tate-Shafarevich group of an elliptic three-fold $f:X\rightarrow S$ when $X$ and $S$ are regular and $f$ is flat, relating it to the Brauer group of $X$ and $S$. We show that given certain hypotheses on $f$, the Tate-Shafarevich group has the interpretation of isomorphism classes of elliptic curves over the function field of $S$ which have the same jacobian as the generic fibre of $f$, and for which there exists a relatively minimal model which has no multiple fibres. We use this to give examples of elliptic fibrations with isolated multiple fibres, and also to give a new coun…
Let $K$ be the function field of a smooth projective curve $X$ over a higher-dimensional local field $k$. We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K$ coming from a closed point of $X$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes, for tori, for groups of multiplicative type, and even for 2-term complexes of tori. We apply these results to the weak approximation for tori over $K$ and to the study of the obstruction to the local-global principle for $K$-torsors under a …
Let $K$ be a number field, let $S$ be a finite set of places of $K$, and let $R_S$ be the ring of $S$-integers of $K$. A $K$-morphism $f:\mathbb{P}^1_K\to\mathbb{P}^1_K$ has simple good reduction outside $S$ if it extends to an $R_S$-morphism $\mathbb{P}^1_{R_S}\to\mathbb{P}^1_{R_S}$. A finite Galois invariant subset $X\subset\mathbb{P}^1_K(\bar{K})$ has good reduction outside $S$ if its closure in $\mathbb{P}^1_{R_S}$ is étale over $R_S$. We study triples $(f,Y,X)$ with $X=Y\cup f(Y)$. We prove that for a fixed $K$, $S$, and $d$, there are only finitely many $\text{PGL}_2(R_S)$-equivalence cl…
In this paper, using Gromov-Jost-Korevaar-Schoen technique of harmonic maps to nonpositively curved targets, we study the representations of the fundamental groups of quasiprojective varieties. As an application of the above considerations we give a proof of a weak version of the Shafarevich Conjecture.
Let $k$ be a number field, and let $S$ be a finite set of maximal ideals of the ring of integers of $k$. In his 1962 ICM address, Shafarevich asked if there are only finitely many $k$-isomorphism classes of algebraic curves of a fixed genus $g\ge 1$ with good reduction outside $S$. He verified this for $g=1$ by reducing the problem to Siegel's theorem. Parshin extended this argument to all hyperelliptic curves (cf. also the work of Oort). The general case was settled by Faltings' celebrated work. In this note we give a short proof of Shafarevich's conjecture for hyperelliptic curves, by reduci…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field, a finite field or a $p$-adic field. Let $K_0=k((x,y))$ be the field of Laurent series in two variables over $k$. We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme over $K_0$ via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K_0$ coming from a codimension 1 point of $\text{Spec}\; k[[x,y]]$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes and for tori. We apply these results to the study of the obstruction to the local-global principle for $K_0$-torsors under a connected linear algebraic …
We prove finiteness results for sets of varieties over number fields with good reduction outside a given finite set of places using cyclic covers. We obtain a version of the Shafarevich conjecture for weighted projective surfaces, double covers of abelian varieties, and reduce the Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces to the case of hypersurfaces of high dimension. These are special cases of a general set-up for integral points on moduli stacks of cyclic covers, and our arithmetic results are achieved via a version of the Chevalley-Weil theorem for stacks.
This article is concerned with the convexity properties of universal covers of projective varieties. We study the relation between the convexity properties of the universal cover of X and the properties of the pullback map sending vector bundles on X to vector bundles on its universal cover. Our approach motivates a weakened version of the Shafarevich conjecture. We prove this conjecture for projective varieties X whose pullback map identifies a nontrivial extension of a negative vector bundle $V$ by the trivial line bundle with the trivial extension. We prove the following pivotal result: if …
Let X be a smooth compactification of a homogeneous space of a linear algebraic group G over a number field k. We establish the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the same groups over all the completions of k. When G is semisimple and simply connected and the geometric stabiliser is finite and supersolvable, we show that rational points of X are dense in the Brauer-Manin set. For finite supersolvable groups, in particular for finite nilpotent groups, this yields a new proof of Shafarevich's theorem on the i…
We establish a relative Bertini type theorem for multiplier ideal sheaves. Then we prove a relative version of the Kollár--Nadel type vanishing theorem as an application.
In this paper we prove a relative version of the classical Mumford-Newstead theorem for a family of smooth curves degenerating to a reducible curve with a simple node. We also prove a Torelli-type theorem by showing that certain moduli spaces of torsion-free sheaves on a reducible curve allows us to recover the curve from the moduli space.
In this paper we prove a concentration theorem for arithmetic $K_0$-theory, this theorem can be viewed as an analog of R. Thomason's result in the arithmetic case. We will use this arithmetic concentration theorem to prove a relative fixed point formula of Lefschetz type in the context of Arakelov geometry. Such a formula was conjectured of a slightly stronger form by K. Köhler and D. Roessler and they also gave a correct route of its proof. Nevertheless our new proof is much simpler since it looks more natural and it doesn't involve too many complicated computations.
This write up attempts to clarify a preprint by Markarian [2] which proves This paper attempts to clarify a preprint of Markarian [2]. The preprint by Markarian [2] proves the relative Riemann-Roch theorem using a result describing how the HKR map fails to respect comultiplication. This paper elaborates on the core computations in [2]. These computations show that the HKR map twisted by the square root of the Todd genus "almost preserves" the Mukai pairing. This settles a part of a conjecture of Caldararu[3]. The relative Riemann-Roch theorem follows from this and a result of Caldararu[4].
Given a smooth projective variety $X$ with a smooth nef divisor $D$ and a positive integer $r$, we construct an $I$-function, an explicit slice of Givental's Lagrangian cone, for Gromov--Witten theory of the root stack $X_{D,r}$. As an application, we also obtain an $I$-function for relative Gromov--Witten theory following the relation between relative and orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants.
The classical Zariski-van Kampen theorem gives a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of a complex algebraic curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$. The first generalization of this theorem to singular (quasi-projective) varieties was given by the first author. In both cases, the relations are generated by the standard monodromy variation operators associated with the special members of a generic pencil of hyperplane sections. In the present paper, we give a new generalization in which the relations are generated by the relative monodromy variation operators introduced by D. Chéniot and th…
We prove the Relative Hard Lefschetz theorem and the Relative Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations for combinatorial intersection cohomology sheaves on fans.

For any line bundle written as a subtraction of two ample line bundles, Siu's inequality gives a criterion on its bigness. We generalize this inequality to a relative case. The arithmetic meaning behind the inequality leads to its application on algebraic dynamic systems, which is the equidistribution theorem of generic and small net of subvarieties over a function field.
We give a general result of finiteness for holomorphic families of Brieskorn modules constructed from a holomorphic family of one parameter degeneration of compact complex manifolds acquiring (general) singularities.
We formulate a theory of punctured affine formal schemes, suitable for certain problems within algebraic topology. As an application, we show that the Morava K-theoretic localizations of Morava E-theory corepresent a version of the Lubin-Tate moduli problem in this framework.
In the present article we investigate properties of the category of the integral Grothendieck-Chow motives over a field. We discuss the Krull-Schmidt principle for integral motives, provide a complete list of the generalized Severi-Brauer varieties with indecomposable integral motive, and exploit a relation between the category of motives of twisted flag varieties and integral $p$-adic representations of finite groups.
We study the pullback of the apolarity invariant of complex polynomials in one variable under a polynomial map on the complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain variations of the classical results of Grace and Walsh in which the unit disk, or a circular domain, is replaced by its image under the given polynomial map.
