In this paper, we develop the theory of Jacobian rings of open complete intersections, which mean a pair $(X,Z)$ where $X$ is a smooth complete intersection in the projective space and and $Z$ is a simple normal crossing divisor in $X$ whose irreducible components are smooth hypersurface sections on $X$. Our Jacobian rings give an algebraic description of the cohomology of the open complement $X-Z$ and it is a natural generalization of the Poincaré residue representation of the cohomology of a hypersurface originally invented by Griffiths. The main results generalize the Macaulay's duality theorem and the Donagi's symmetrizer lemma for usual Jacobian rings for hypersurfaces. A feature that distinguishes our generalized Jacobian rings from usual ones is that there are instances where duality fails to be perfect while the defect can be controlled explicitly by using the defining equations of $Z$ in $X$. Two applications of the main results are given: One is the infinitesimal Torelli problem for open complete intersections. Another is an explicit bound for Nori's connectivity in case of complete intersections. The results have been applied also to study of algebraic cycles in several other works.
We translate the results of Yansong Xu into the language of~\cite{GGV1}, obtaining nearly the same formulas for the intersection number of Jacobian pairs, but with an inequality instead of an equality.
We study the 0-th local cohomology module of the jacobian ring of a singular reduced complex projective hypersurface X, by relating it to the sheaf of logarithmic vector field along X. We investigate the analogies between the local cohomology and the well known properties of the jacobian ring of a nonsingular hypersurface. In particular we study self-duality, Hodge theoretic and Torelli type questions.
Let $J$ be the Jacobian of a smooth projective complex curve $C$ which admits non-trivial automorphisms, and let $A(J)$ be the ring of algebraic cycles on $J$ with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence. We present new tautological rings in $A(J)$ which extend in a natural way the tautological ring studied by Beauville (Compos Math 140(3):683-688, 2004). We then show there exist tautological rings induced on special complementary abelian subvarieties of $J$.
The Jacobian ring J(X) of a smooth hypersurface determines its isomorphism type. This has been used by Donagi and others to prove the generic global Torelli theorem for hypersurfaces in many cases. In Voisin's original proof of the global Torelli theorem for smooth cubic fourfolds the Jacobian ring does not intervene. In this paper we present a proof of the global Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds that relies on the Jacobian ring and the (derived) global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces. It emphasizes, once again, the relation between K3 surfaces and smooth cubic fourfolds. More generally, fo…
We provide an explicit presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring of the compactified Jacobian $J_{q/p}$ of the rational curve $C_{q/p}$ with planar equation $x^{q}=y^{p}$ for $(p,q)=1$. We also prove analogous results for the closely related affine Springer fiber $Sp_{q/p}$ in the affine flag variety of $SL_{p}$. We show that the perverse filtration on the cohomology of $J_{q/p}$ is multiplicative, and the associated graded ring under the perverse filtration is a degeneration of the ring of functions on a moduli space of maps $\mathbb{P}^{1}\to C_{q/p}$. We also propose several conjectur…
We consider the Chow ring with rational coefficients of the Jacobian of a curve. Assume D is a divisor in a base point free g^r_d of the curve such that the canonical divisor K is a multiple of the divisor D. We find relations between tautological cycles. We give applications for curves having a degree d covering of P^1 whose ramification points are all of order d, and then for hyperelliptic curves.
In this note, we examine the Jacobian ring description of the Hodge structure of zero loci of vector bundle sections on a class of ambient varieties. We consider a set of cohomological vanishing conditions that imply such a description, and we verify these conditions for some new cases. We also observe that the method can be directly extended to log homogeneous varieties. We apply the Jacobian ring to study the null varieties of period integrals and their derivatives, generalizing a result in [9] for projective spaces. As an additional application, we prove the Hodge conjecture for very generi…
We prove that the $0$-th local cohomology of the jacobian ring of a projective hypersurface with isolated singularities has a nice interpretation it in the context of linkage theory. Roughly speaking, it represents a measure of the failure of Gherardelli's theorem for the corresponding graded modules. This leads us to a different and characteristic free proof of its self-duality, which turns out to be an easy consequence of Grothendieck's local duality theorem.
We connect two notions of tautological ring: one for the moduli space of curves (after Mumford, Faber, etc.), and the other for the Jacobian of a curve (after Beauville, Polishchuk, etc.). The motivic Lefschetz decomposition on the Jacobian side produces relations between tautological classes, leading to results about Faber's Gorenstein conjecture on the curve side. We also relate certain Gorenstein properties on both sides and verify them for small genera. Further, we raise the question whether all tautological relations are motivic, giving a possible explanation why the Gorenstein properties…
We describe algorithms for computing the intersection numbers of divisors and of Chern classes of the Hodge bundle on the moduli spaces of stable pointed curves. We also discuss the implementations and the results obtained. There are several applications. We discuss one in particular: the calculation of the projection in the tautological ring of the moduli space of abelian varieties of the class of the locus of Jacobians.
Let f_1,...,f_r be homogeneous polynomials in K[x_1,...,x_n], K a field. Put F=y_1f_1+...+y_rf_r in K[x,y] and let I be the ideal of K[x,y] generated by the partials of F relative to the x_i and y_j. The Jacobian ring of F is the quotient J:=K[x,y]/I. We describe J by computing the cohomology of a certain complex whose top cohomology group is J.
This paper studies the local geometry of compactified Jacobians constructed by Caporaso, Oda-Seshadri, Pandharipande, and Simpson. The main result is a presentation of the completed local ring of the compactified Jacobian of a nodal curve as an explicit ring of invariants described in terms of the dual graph of the curve. The authors have investigated the geometric and combinatorial properties of these rings in previous work, and consequences for compactified Jacobians are presented in this paper. Similar results are given for the local structure of the universal compactified Jacobian over the…
We give a new method of producing relations in the tautological ring R(M_{g, 1}), using the sl_2-action on the Chow ring of the universal Jacobian. With these relations, we prove that R(M_{g, 1}) is generated by κ_i for i no greater than g/3, together with ψ. Our computation shows that Faber's conjectures for M_{g, 1} are true for g up to 19. Further, by pushing relations forward to M_g, we obtain a new proof of Faber's conjectures (for M_g) for g up to 23. For g = 24, our method recovers all the Faber-Zagier relations. We also give an algebraic proof of an identity of Morita.
We describe several improvements to algorithms for the rigorous computation of the endomorphism ring of the Jacobian of a curve defined over a number field.
For given polynomial map $F:\C^2\to\C^2$ with nonvanishing jacobian we associate a variety whose homology or intersection homology describes the geometry of singularities at infinity of this map.
The Beilinson-Bloch type conjectures predict that the low degree rational Chow groups of intersections of quadrics are one dimensional. This conjecture was proved by Otwinowska. Making use of homological projective duality and the recent theory of (Jacobians of) noncommutative Chow motives, we give an alternative proof of this conjecture in the case of a complete intersection of either two quadrics or three odd-dimensional quadrics. Moreover, without the use of the powerful Lefschetz theorem, we prove that in these cases the unique non-trivial algebraic Jacobian is the middle one. As an applic…
We present relations between cycles with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence on the Jacobian of a curve. These relations depend on the linear systems the curve admits. They are obtained in the tautological ring, the smallest subspace containing (an embedding of) the curve and closed under the basic operations of intersection, Pontryagin product and the pullback and pushdown induced by homotheties.
We calculate a Griffiths-type ring for smooth complete intersection in Grassmannians. This is the analogue of the classical Jacobian ring for complete intersections in projective space, and allows us to explicitly compute their Hodge groups.
We give a quasihomogeneity criterion for Gorenstein curves. For complete intersections, it is related to the first step of Vasconcelos' normalization algorithm. In the process, we give a simplified proof of the Kunz-Ruppert criterion.
Given a polynomial $W$ with an isolated singularity, we can consider the Jacobian ring as an invariant of the singularity. If in addition we have a group action on the polynomial ring with $W$ fixed, we are led to consider the twisted Jacobian ring which reflects the equivariant structure as well. Our main result is to show that the twisted Jacobian ring is isomorphic to an endomorphism ring of the "twisted diagonal" matrix factorization. As an application, we suggest a way to investigate Floer theory of Lagrangian submanifolds which represent homological mirror functors.
In [5], without giving a detailed proof, Yamauchi provided a formula to calculate the genus of a certain family of smooth complete intersection algebraic curves. That formula is used extensively in [1] to study the algebraic curves for which their Jacobian has superelliptic components. In this note, we determine the correct version of the genus formula with an algebraic proof. Then, we show that the formula given in [5] works only under certain conditions.
We study tautological cycle classes on the Jacobian of a curve. We prove a new result about the ring of tautological classes on a general curve that allows, among other things, easy dimension calculations and leads to some general results about the structure of this ring. Next we obtain a vanishing result for some of the generating classes p_i; this gives an improvement of an earlier result of Herbaut. Finally we lift a result of Herbaut and van der Geer-Kouvidakis to the Chow ring (as opposed to its quotient modulo algebraic equivalence) and we give a method to obtain further explicit cycle r…
Let C be a curve over a non-singular base variety S. We study algebraic cycles on the symmetric powers C^[n] and on the Jacobian J. The Chow homology of C^[*], the sum of all C^[n], is a ring using the Pontryagin product. We prove that this ring is isomorphic to CH(J)[t]<u>, the PD-polynomial algebra (variable: u) over the usual polynomial ring (variable: t) over the Chow ring CH(J). We give two such isomorphisms that over a general base are different. Further we give some precise results on how CH(J) sits embedded in CH(C^[*]) and we give an explicit geometric description of how the derivatio…
We prove that the cotangent bundle of a complete intersection of two general translates of the theta divisor of the jacobian of a general curve of genus 4 is ample. From this the same result for a general principally polarized abelian variety of dimension 4 follows.
Let C be a complex curve of genus g, let J(C) be its Jacobian and let R(C) be its tautological ring, that is, the group of algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence. We study the algebraic structure of R(C). In particular, we give a detailed description of all the possibilities that may occur for g<9: we construct convenient basis and we determine the matrices representing the Fourier transform and both intersection and Pontryagin products explicitly. In particular, we estimate the dimension of R(C).
The moduli space of generalized deformations of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface is computed in terms of the Jacobian ring of the defining polynomial. The fibers of the tangent bundle to this moduli space carry algebra structures, which are identified using subalgebras of a deformed Jacobian ring.
In this paper, we consider the tautological ring containing the extended Brill-Noether algebraic classes on the normalization of the compactified Jacobian of a complex nodal projective curve (with one node). This smallest $\Q$-subalgebra of algebraic classes under algebraic equivalence, stable under extensions of the maps induced by multiplication maps, Pontrayagin product and Fourier transform, is shown to be generated by pullback of the Brill-Noether classes of the Jacobian of the normalized curve and some natural classes.
Let $K$ be a field of prime characteristic $p$, $n>4 $ an integer, $f(x)$ an irreducible polynomial over $K$ of degree $n$, whose Galois group is either the full symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$. Let $l$ be an odd prime different from $p$, $Z[ζ_l]$ the ring of integers in the $l$th cyclotomic field, $C_{f,l}:y^l=f(x)$ the corresponding superelliptic curve and $J(C_{f,l})$ its jacobian. We prove that the ring of all endomorphisms of $J(C_{f,l})$ coincides with $Z[ζ_l]$ if $J(C_{f,l})$ is an ordinary abelian variety and $(l,n)\ne (5,5)$.
We prove a version of the BKK theorem for the ring of conditions of a spherical homogeneous space $G/H$. We also introduce the notion of ring of complete intersections, firstly for a spherical homogeneous space and secondly for an arbitrary variety. Similarly to the ring of conditions of the torus, the ring of complete intersections of $G/H$ admits a description in terms of volumes of polytopes.
We describe an algorithm, based on the properties of the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius, to compute $\operatorname{End}_{\overline{K}}(A)$ when $A$ is the Jacobian of a nice genus-2 curve over a number field $K$. We use this algorithm to confirm that the description of the structure of the geometric endomorphism ring of $\operatorname{Jac}(C)$ given in the LMFDB ($L$-functions and modular forms database) is correct for all the genus 2 curves $C$ currently listed in it. We also discuss the determination of the field of definition of the endomorphisms in some special cases.
This note gives the complete projective classification of rational, cuspidal plane curves of degree at least 6, and having only weighted homogeneous singularities. It also sheds new light on some previous characterizations of free and nearly free curves in terms of Tjurina numbers. Finally, we suggest a stronger form of Terao's conjecture on the freeness of a line arrangement being determined by its combinatorics.
Suppose K is a field of characteristic 0, $K_a$ is its algebraic closure, p is an odd prime. Suppose, $f(x) \in K[x]$ is a polynomial of degree $n \ge 5$ without multiple roots. Let us consider a curve $C: y^p=f(x)$ and its jacobian J(C). It is known that the ring End(J(C)) of all $K_a$-endomorphisms of J(C) contains the ring $Z[ζ_p]$ of integers in the pth cyclotomic field (generated by obvious automorphisms of C). We prove that $End(J(C))=Z[ζ_p]$ if the Galois group of f over K is either the symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$.
We derive effective recursion formulae of top intersections in the tautological ring $R^*(M_g)$ of the moduli space of curves of genus $g\geq 2$. As an application, we prove a convolution-type tautological relation in $R^{g-2}(M_g)$.
Kyoji Saito's notion of a free divisor was generalized by the first author to reduced Gorenstein spaces and by Delphine Pol to reduced Cohen-Macaulay spaces. Starting point is the Aleksandrov-Terao theorem: A hypersurface is free if and only if its Jacobian ideal is maximal Cohen-Macaulay. Pol obtains a generalized Jacobian ideal as a cokernel by dualizing Aleksandrov's multi-logarithmic residue sequence. Notably it is essentially a suitably chosen complete intersection ideal that is used for dualizing. Pol shows that this generalized Jacobian ideal is maximal Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the…
We associate to any given finite set of valuations on the polynomial ring in two variables over an algebraically closed field a numerical invariant whose positivity characterizes the case when the intersection of their valuation rings has maximal transcendence degree over the base fields. As an application, we give a criterion for when an analytic branch at infinity in the affine plane that is defined over a number field in a suitable sense is the branch of an algebraic curve.
Let J be the Jacobian of a smooth curve C of genus g, and let A(J) be the ring of algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence on J, tensored with Q. We study in this paper the smallest Q-vector subspace R of A(J) which contains C and is stable under the natural operations of A(J) : intersection and Pontryagin products, pull back and push down under multiplication by integers. We prove that this "tautological subring" is generated (over Q) by the classes of the subvarieties W_1=C, W_2=C+C, ..., W_{g-1}. If C admits a morphism of degree d onto P^1, we prove that the last d-1 classes suffice.
The compactified Jacobian of any projective curve $X$ is defined as the Simpson moduli space of torsion free rank one degree $d$ sheaves that are semistable with respect to a fixed polarization $H$ on $X$. In this paper we give explicitly the structure of this compactified Simpson Jacobian in the case where $X$ is a generalized tree-like curve, i.e., a projective, reduced and connected curve such that the intersection points of its irreducible components are disconnecting ordinary double points. We prove that it is isomorphic to the product of the compactified Jacobians of a certain degree $d_…
In his previous papers (J. reine angew. Math. 544 (2002), 91--110; math.AG/0103203) the author introduced a certain explicit construction of superelliptic jacobians, whose endomorphism ring is the ring of integers in the $p$th cyclotomic field. (Here $p$ is an odd prime.) In the present paper we discuss when these jacobians are mutually non-isogenous. (The case of hyperelliptic jacobians was treated in author's e-print math.NT/0301173 .)
Let $K$ be a number field and $O_K$ the ring of integers of $K$. In the spirit of Siegel's theorem on integral points on affine algebraic curves, the plane Jacobian conjecture over $K$ is equivalent to the following statement: if $P,Q\in O_K[x,y]$ and $P_xQ_y-P_yQ_x\equiv 1$, then the curve $P=0$ has more than one integral point.
Let C \in P2 be a reduced, singular curve of degree d and equation f = 0. Let Σdenote the jacobian subscheme of C. We have 0 -> E -> 3.O -> I_Σ(d-1) -> 0 (the surjection is given by the partials of f). We study the relationships between the Betti numbers of the module H^0_*(E) and the integers, d; τ, where τ= deg(Σ). We observe that our results apply to any quasi-complete intersection of type (s; s; s).
We study the intersection of two particular Fermat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ over a finite field. Using the Kani-Rosen decomposition we study arithmetic properties of this curve in terms of its quotients. Explicit computation of the quotients is done using a Gröbner basis algorithm. We also study the $p$-rank, zeta function, and number of rational points, of the modulo $p$ reduction of the curve. We show that the Jacobian of the genus 2 quotient is $(4,4)$-split.
On one hand, for a general Calabi-Yau complete intersection X, we establish a decomposition, up to rational equivalence, of the small diagonal in X^3, from which we deduce that any decomposable 0-cycle of degree 0 is in fact rationally equivalent to 0, up to torsion. On the other hand, we find a similar decomposition of the smallest diagonal in a higher power of a hypersurface, which provides us an analogous result on the multiplicative structure of its Chow ring.
In this paper, we exploit some geometric-differential techniques to prove the strong Lefschetz property in degree $1$ for a complete intersection standard Artinian Gorenstein algebra of codimension $6$ presented by quadrics. We prove also some strong Lefschetz properties for the same kind of Artinian algebras in higher codimensions. Moreover, we analyze some loci that come naturally into the picture of "special" Artinian algebras: for them, we give some geometric descriptions and show a connection between the non emptiness of the so-called non-Lefschetz locus in degree $1$ and the "lifting" of…
We present a collection of algebraic equivalences between tautological cycles on the Jacobian $J$ of a curve, i.e., cycles in the subring of the Chow ring of $J$ generated by the classes of certain standard subvarieties of $J$. These equivalences are universal in the sense that they hold for all curves of given genus. We show also that they are compatible with the action of the Fourier transform on tautological cycles and compute this action explicitly.
The Jacobian ideal of a hyperplane arrangement is an ideal in the polynomial ring whose generators are the partial derivatives of the arrangements defining polynomial. In this article, we prove that an arrangement can be reconstructed from its Jacobian ideal.
Let X be a very general complete intersection in complex projective space and we denote by $F_r(X)$ the variety of r-planes in X, for $r\geq 1$. We show that the Picard number of $F_r(X)$ is 1, as soon as $\dim F_r(X)\geq 2$, except when X is a quadric of dimension 2r or 2r+2, or X is a complete intersection of two quadrics of dimension 2r+2. We also apply this result to determine the cohomology class of the variety of planes of a cubic fivefold contained (by the Abel-Jacobi map) in the intermediate Jacobian.
We provide a general method for computing rational Chow rings of moduli of smooth complete intersections. We specialize this result in different ways: to compute the integral Picard group of the associated stack ; to obtain an explicit presentation of rational Chow rings of moduli of smooth complete intersections of codimension two; to prove old and new results on moduli of smooth curves of genus $\leq 5$ and polarized K3 surfaces of degree $\leq 8$.
For each nonsingular hyperelliptic curve of arbitrary genus, we construct a natural injection from the Galois cohomology of 2-torsion subgroups of Jacobian varieties of the curve to the set of isomorphism classes of nonsingular complete intersections of two quadrics. This gives a generalization of the result of Flynn and Skorobogatov.
Let K be a field of characteristic zero, n>4 an integer, f(x) an irreducible polynomial over K of degree n, whose Galois group is doubly transitive simple non-abelian group. Let p be an odd prime, Z[ζ_p] the ring of integers in the p-th cyclotomic field, C_{f,p}:y^p=f(x) the corresponding superelliptic curve and J(C_{f,p}) its jacobian. Assuming that either n=p+1 or p does not divide n(n-1), we prove that the ring of all endomorphisms of J(C_{f,p}) coincides with Z[ζ_p].
