In this thesis we consider a way to construct a rich family of compact Riemann Surfaces in a combinatorial way. Given a 3-regualr graph with orientation, we construct a finite-area hyperbolic Riemann surface by gluing triangles according to the combinatorics of the graph. We then compactify this surface by adding finitely many points.
We discuss this construction by considering a number of examples. In particular, we see that the surface depends in a strong way on the orientation.
We then consider the effect the process of compactification has on the hyperbolic metric of the surface. To that end, we ask when we can change the metric in the horocycle neighbourhoods of the cusps to get a hyperbolic metric on the compactification. In general, the process of compactification can have drastic effects on the hyperbolic structure. For instance, if we compactify the 3-punctured sphere we lose its hyperbolic structure.
We show that when the cusps have lengths > 2π, we can fill in the horocycle neighbourhoods and retain negative curvature. Furthermore, the last condition is sharp. We show by examples that there exist curves arbitrarily close to horocycles of length 2π, which cannot be so filled in. Such curves can even be taken to be convex.
In this paper, we study the curve shortening flow (CSF) on Riemann surfaces. We generalize Huisken's comparison function to Riemann surfaces and surfaces with conic singularities. We reprove the Gage-Hamilton-Grayson theorem on surfaces. We also prove that for embedded simple closed curves, CSF can not touch conic singularities with cone angles $\leq π$.
Let $S$ be a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$. We call a systole a shortest simple closed geodesic in $S$ and denote by $\mathop{sys}(S)$ its length. Let $\mathop{msys(g)}$ be the maximal value that $\mathop{sys}(\cdot)$ can attain among the compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$. We call a (globally) maximal surface $S_{max}$ a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ whose systole has length $\mathop{msys}(g)$. In Section 2 we use cutting and pasting techniques to construct compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces with large systoles from maximal surfaces. This enables us to prov…
In this paper, we consider surfaces in 4--dimensional pseudo--Riemannian space--forms with index 2. First, we obtain some of geometrical properties of such surfaces considering their relative null space. Then, we get classifications of quasi--minimal surfaces with positive relative nullity.
We consider the gauge transformations of a metric $G$-bundle over a compact Riemannian surface with boundary. By employing the heat flow method, the local existence and the long time existence of generalized solution are proved.
We present some results about harmonic maps with possibly infinite energy from punctured Riemann surfaces to CAT(0) spaces. In particular, we give precise estimates of their energy growth near the punctures and prove their uniqueness.
We prove a gluing theorem for solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations with logarithmic singularities on a rank-2 vector bundle over a noded Riemann surface representing a boundary point of Teichmüller moduli space.
A zero mean curvature surface in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space is said to be of Riemann-type if it is foliated by circles and at most countably many straight lines in parallel planes. We classify all zero mean curvature surfaces of Riemann-type according to their causal characters, and as a corollary, we prove that if a zero mean curvature surface of Riemann-type has exactly two causal characters, then the lightlike part of the surface is a part of a straight line.
We gave an alternative short proof on the finite generation of holomorphic functions with polynomial growth on Riemann surfaces with nonnegative curvature. The first proof was due to Li and Tam.
In this article, we derive off-diagonal estimates of the Bergman kernel associated to tensor- products of the cotangent line bundle defined over a hyperbolic Riemann surface of finite volume.
In this paper we consider determining a minimal surface embedded in a Riemannian manifold $Σ\times \mathbb{R}$. We show that if $Σ$ is a two dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary, then the knowledge of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the minimal surface equation determine $Σ$ up to an isometry.
This article is an attempt to generalize Riemann's bilinear relations on compact Riemann surface of genus at least 2, which may lead to new structures in the theory of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. No significant result is obtained, the article serves to bring the readers' attention to the observation made by [Bol-1949], and some easy consequences.
We compute the automorphism groups of the Dolbeault, de Rham and Betti moduli spaces for the multiplicative group ${\mathbb C}^*$ associated to a compact connected Riemann surface.
Pseudo-Riemannian metrics on closed surfaces whose geodesic flows admit nontrivial integrals quadratic in momenta, and proof of the projective Obata conjecture for two-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian metrics
We will show that any open Riemann surface $M$ of finite genus is biholomorphic to an open set of a compact Riemann surface. Moreover, we will introduce a quotient space of forms in $M$ that determines if $M$ has finite genus and also the minimal genus where $M$ can be holomorphically embedded.
In this paper we study the smooth moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces. This smooth moduli is an infinite cover of the usual moduli space $\mathscr{M}_g$ of closed Riemann surfaces, and is identified with the Schottky space of rank $g.$ The main theorem of the paper is: Closed Riemann surfaces are uniformizable by Schottky groups of Hausdorff dimension less than one. This work seem to be the only paper in literature to study question of Riemann surface uniformization and its Hausdorff dimension. We develop new techniques of rational norm of homological marking of Riemann surface and, decomp…
We extend the well-known Sacks-Uhlenbeck energy gap result (1981) for harmonic maps from closed Riemann surfaces into closed Riemannian manifolds from the case of maps with small energy (thus near a constant map), to the case of harmonic maps with high absolute energy but small energy relative to a reference harmonic map.
