We compute the Hochschild, cyclic, and periodic cyclic homology groups of algebras of families of Laurent complete symbols on manifolds with corners. We show in particular that the spectral sequence associated with Hochschild homology degenerates at $E^2$ and converges to Hochschild homology. As a byproduct, we deduce an identification of the space of residue traces on fibrations by manifolds with corners. In the process, we prove several general results about algebras of complete symbols on manifolds with corners.
We show that an elliptic uniform pseudodifferential operator over a manifold of bounded geometry defines a class in uniform K-homology, and that this class only depends on the principal symbol of the operator.
We study the Hochschild homology groups of the algebra of complete symbols on a foliated manifold $(M,F)$. The first step is to relate these groups to the Poisson homology of $(M,F)$ and of other related foliated manifolds. We then establish several general properties of the Poisson homology groups of foliated manifolds. As an example, we completely determine these Hochschild homology groups for the algebra of complete symbols on the irrational slope foliation of a torus (under some diophantine approximation assumptions). We also use our calculations to determine all residue traces on algebras…
We show that the computation of the Fredholm index of a fully elliptic pseudodifferential operator on an integrated Lie manifold can be reduced to the computation of the index of a Dirac operator, perturbed by a smoothing operator, canonically associated, via the so-called clutching map. To this end we adapt to our framework ideas coming from Baum-Douglas geometric $K$-homology and in particular we introduce a notion of geometric cycles, that can be categorized as a variant of the famous geometric $K$-homology groups, for the specific situation here. We also define a comparison map between thi…
Let M be a closed manifold. Wodzicki shows that, in the stable range, the cyclic cohomology of the associative algebra of pseudodifferential symbols of order \leq 0 is isomorphic to the homology of the cosphere bundle of M. In this article we develop a formalism which allows to calculate that, under this isomorphism, the Radul cocycle corresponds to the Poincaré dual of the Todd class. As an immediate corollary we obtain a purely algebraic proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic pseudodifferential operators on closed manifolds.
We define the gauge-equivariant index of a family of elliptic operators invariant with respect to the free action of a family $\GR \to B$ of Lie groups (these families are called ``gauge-invariant families'' in what follows). If the fibers of $\GR \to B$ are simply-connected and solvable, we compute the Chern character of the gauge-equivariant index, the result being given by an Atiyah-Singer type formula that incorporates also topological information about the bundle $\GR \to B$. The algebras of invariant pseudodifferential operators that we study, $\Psm {\infty}Y$ and $\PsS {\infty}Y$, are g…
We establish the stable homotopy classification of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with corners and show that the set of elliptic operators modulo stable homotopy is isomorphic to the K-homology group of some stratified manifold. By way of application, generalizations of some recent results due to Monthubert and Nistor are given.
We prove an index theorem for families of pseudodifferential operators generalizing those studied by C. Callias, N. Anghel and others. Specifically, we consider operators on a manifold with boundary equipped with an asymptotically conic (scattering) metric, which have the form D + i Φ, where D is elliptic pseudodifferential with Hermitian symbols, and Φis a Hermitian bundle endomorphism which is invertible at the boundary and commutes with the symbol of D there. The index of such operators is completely determined by the symbolic data over the boundary. We use the scattering calculus of R. Mel…
Let $A(t)$ be an elliptic, product-type suspended (which is to say parameter-dependant in a symbolic way) family of pseudodifferential operators on the fibres of a fibration $ϕ$ with base $Y.$ The standard example is $A+it$ where $A$ is a family, in the usual sense, of first order, self-adjoint and elliptic pseudodifferential operators and $t\in\bbR$ is the `suspending' parameter. Let $π_{\cA}:\cA(ϕ)\longrightarrow Y$ be the infinite-dimensional bundle with fibre at $y\in Y$ consisting of the Schwartz-smoothing perturbations, $q,$ making $A_y(t)+q(t)$ invertible for all $t\in\bbR.$ The total e…
It is well known that elliptic operators on a smooth compact manifold are classified by K-homology. We prove that a similar classification is also valid for manifolds with simplest singularities: isolated conical points and fibered boundary. The main ingredients of the proof of these results are: an analog of the Atiyah-Singer difference construction in the noncommutative case and an analog of Poincare isomorphism in K-theory for our singular manifolds. As applications we give a formula in topological terms for the obstruction to Fredholm problems on manifolds with singularities and a formula …
One way to geometrically encode the singularities of a stratified pseudomanifold is to endow its interior with an iterated fibred cusp metric. For such a metric, we develop and study a pseudodifferential calculus generalizing the Φ-calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose. Our starting point is the observation, going back to Melrose, that a stratified pseudomanifold can be `resolved' into a manifold with fibred corners. This allows us to define pseudodifferential operators as conormal distributions on a suitably blown-up double space. Various symbol maps are introduced, leading to the notion of full ell…
A families index theorem in K-theory is given for the setting of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer of a family of Dirac operators with spectral boundary condition. This result is deduced from such a K-theory index theorem for the calculus of cusp, or more generally fibred cusp, pseudodifferential operators on the fibres (with boundary) of a fibration; a version of Poincare duality is also shown in this setting, identifying the stable Fredholm families with elements of a bivariant K-group.
We prove index formulas for elliptic operators acting between sections of C*-vector bundles on a closed manifold. The formulas involve Karoubi's Chern character from K-theory of a C*-algebra to de Rham homology of smooth subalgebras. We show how they apply to the higher index theorem for coverings and to flat foliated bundles, and prove an index theorem for C*-dynamical systems associated to actions of compact Lie groups. In an Appendix we relate the pairing of odd K-theory and KK-theory to the noncommutative spectral flow and prove the regularity of elliptic pseudodifferential operators over …
For every connected manifold with corners we use a homology theory called conormal homology, defined in terms of faces and incidences and whose cycles correspond geometrically to corner's cycles. Its Euler characteristic (over the rationals, dimension of the total even space minus the dimension of the total odd space), $χ_{cn}:=χ_0-χ_1$, is given by the alternated sum of the number of (open) faces of a given codimension. The main result of the present paper is that for a compact connected manifold with corners $X$ given as a finite product of manifolds with corners of codimension less or equal…
We introduce the notion of "covering homology" of a commutative ring spectrum with respect to certain families of coverings of topological spaces. The construction of covering homology is extracted from Bokstedt, Hsiang and Madsen's topological cyclic homology. In fact covering homology with respect to the family of orientation preserving isogenies of the circle is equal to topological cyclic homology. Our basic tool for the analysis of covering homology is a cofibration sequence involving homotopy orbits and a restriction map similar to the restriction map used in Bokstedt, Hsiang and Madsen'…
We define a class of boundary value problems on manifolds with fibered boundary. This class is in a certain sense a deformation between the classical boundary value problems and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer problems in subspaces. The boundary conditions in this theory are taken as elements of the C^*-algebra generated by pseudodifferential operators and families of pseudodifferential operators in the fibers. We prove the Fredholm property for elliptic boundary value problems. This class also contains nonlocal boundary value problems of math.KT/0108107. We compute a topological obstruction (similar…
We study the Hochschild homology of the iterated skew polynomial rings introduced by D. Jordan in ``A simple localization of the quantized Weyl algebra''. First, we obtain a complex, smaller than the canonical one of Hochschild, given the homology of such an algebra, and then, we study this complex in order to compute the homology of some families of algebras. In particular we compute the homology of some quantum groups, in the generic case.
Let H = H (R,q) be an affine Hecke algebra with complex, possibly unequal parameters q, which are not roots of unity. We compute the Hochschild and the cyclic homology of H. It turns out that these are independent of q and that they admit an easy description in terms of the extended quotient of a torus by a Weyl group, both of which are canonically associated to the root datum R. For q positive we also prove that the representations of the family of algebras H (R,q^ε) come in families which depend analytically on the complex number ε. Analogous results are obtained for graded Hecke algebras an…
We define and study the index map for families of $G$-transversally elliptic operators and introduce the multiplicity for a given irreducible representation as a virtual bundle over the base of the fibration. We then prove the usual axiomatic properties for the index map extending the Atiyah-Singer results [1]. Finally, we compute the Kasparov intersection product of our index class against the K-homology class of an elliptic operator on the base. Our approach is based on the functorial properties of the intersection product, and relies on some constructions due to Connes-Skandalis and to Hils…
We investigate higher topological cyclic homology as an approach to studying chromatic phenomena in homotopy theory. Higher topological cyclic homology is constructed from the fixed points of a version of topological Hochschild homology based on the n-dimensional torus, and we propose it as a computationally tractable cousin of n-fold iterated algebraic K-theory. The fixed points of toral topological Hochschild homology are related to one another by restriction and Frobenius operators. We introduce two additional families of operators on fixed points, the Verschiebung, indexed on self-isogenie…
We study twisted $Spin^c$-manifolds over a paracompact Hausdorff space $X$ with a twisting $α: X \to K(\ZZ, 3)$. We introduce the topological index and the analytical index on the bordism group of $α$-twisted $Spin^c$-manifolds over $(X, α)$, taking values in topological twisted K-homology and analytical twisted K-homology respectively. The main result of this paper is to establish the equality between the topological index and the analytical index. We also define a notion of geometric twisted K-homology, whose cycles are geometric cycles of $(X, \a)$ analogous to Baum-Douglas's geometric cycl…
We calculate the homology of three families of 2-step nilpotent Lie (super)algebras associated with the symplectic, orthogonal, and general linear groups. The symplectic case was considered by Getzler and the main motivation for this work was to complete the calculations started by him. In all three cases, these algebras can be realized as the nilpotent radical of a parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra, and our first approach relies on a theorem of Kostant, but is otherwise elementary and involves combinatorics of Weyl groups and partitions which may be of independent interest. Our sec…
We consider two calculi of pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with fibered boundary: Mazzeo's edge calculus, which has as local model the operators associated to products of closed manifolds with asymptotically hyperbolic spaces, and the phi calculus of Mazzeo and the second author, which is similarly modeled on products of closed manifolds with asymptotically Euclidean spaces. We construct an adiabatic calculus of operators interpolating between them, and use this to compute the `smooth' K-theory groups of the edge calculus, determine the existence of Fredholm quantizations of elliptic…
