We prove index formulas for elliptic operators acting between sections of C*-vector bundles on a closed manifold. The formulas involve Karoubi's Chern character from K-theory of a C*-algebra to de Rham homology of smooth subalgebras. We show how they apply to the higher index theorem for coverings and to flat foliated bundles, and prove an index theorem for C*-dynamical systems associated to actions of compact Lie groups. In an Appendix we relate the pairing of odd K-theory and KK-theory to the noncommutative spectral flow and prove the regularity of elliptic pseudodifferential operators over C*-algebras.
R. W. Carey and J. Pincus in [CaPi86] proposed and index theory for non-Fredholm bounded operators T on a separable Hilbert space H such that TT* - T*T is in the trace class. We showed in [CGK13] using Dirac-type operators acting on sections of bundles over R^{2n} that we could construct bounded operators T satisfying the more general condition that (1-TT*)^n - (1-T*T)^n is trace class. We proposed there a "homological" index for these Dirac-type operators given by Tr( (1-TT*)^n - (1-T*T)^n ). In this paper we show that the index introduced in [CGK13] represents the result of a pairing between…
This paper is a continuation of arXiv:0706.3511, where we obtained a local index formula for matrix elliptic operators with shifts. Here we establish a cohomological index formula of Atiyah-Singer type for elliptic differential operators with shifts acting between section spaces of arbitrary vector bundles. The key step is the construction of closed graded traces on certain differential algebras over the symbol algebra for this class of operators.
We define the Chern character of the index class of a $G$-invariant family of $G$-transversally elliptic operators, see [6]. Next we study the Berline-Vergne formula for families in the elliptic and transversally elliptic case.
The aim of this paper is to show how zeta functions and excision in cyclic cohomology may be combined to obtain index theorems. In the first part, we obtain a local index formula for "abstract elliptic pseudodifferential operators" associated to spectral triples. This formula is notably well adapted when the zeta function has multiple poles. The second part is devoted to give a concrete realization of this formula by deriving an index theorem on the simple, but significant example of Heisenberg elliptic operators on a trivial foliation, which are in general non-elliptic but hypoelliptic. The l…
We consider the index problem for a wide class of nonlocal elliptic operators on a smooth closed manifold, namely differential operators with shifts induced by the action of an isometric diffeomorphism. The key to the solution is the method of uniformization: We assign to the nonlocal problem a pseudodifferential operator with the same index, acting in sections of an infinite-dimensional vector bundle on a compact manifold. We then determine the index in terms of topological invariants of the symbol, using the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.
We develop elliptic theory of operators associated with a diffeomorphism of a closed smooth manifold. The aim of the present paper is to obtain an index formula for such operators in terms of topological invariants of the manifold and of the symbol of the operator. The symbol in this situation is an element of a certain crossed product. We express the index as the pairing of the class in K-theory defined by the symbol and the Todd class in periodic cyclic cohomology of the crossed product.
We give the homotopy classification and compute the index of boundary value problems for elliptic equations. The classical case of operators that satisfy the Atiyah-Bott condition is studied first. We also consider the general case of boundary value problems for operators that do not necessarily satisfy the Atiyah-Bott condition.
Mathai, Melrose, and Singer introduced the notion of projective elliptic operators on manifolds equipped with an Azumaya bundle. In this note we compute the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators that are the pullback of projective elliptic operators on the trivialization of the Azumaya bundle. It encompasses the fractional index formula of projective elliptic operator by Mathai-Melrose-Singer.
We define and study the index map for families of $G$-transversally elliptic operators and introduce the multiplicity for a given irreducible representation as a virtual bundle over the base of the fibration. We then prove the usual axiomatic properties for the index map extending the Atiyah-Singer results [1]. Finally, we compute the Kasparov intersection product of our index class against the K-homology class of an elliptic operator on the base. Our approach is based on the functorial properties of the intersection product, and relies on some constructions due to Connes-Skandalis and to Hils…
We introduce and study the index morphism for G-invariant leafwise G-transversally elliptic operators on smooth closed foliated manifolds which are endowed with leafwise actions of the compact group G. We prove the usual axioms of excision, multiplicativity and induction for closed subgroups. In the case of free actions, we relate our index class with the Connes-Skandalis index class of the corresponding leafwise elliptic operator on the quotient foliation. Finally we prove the compatibility of our index morphism with the Gysin Thom isomorphism and reduce its computation to the case of tori ac…

We give a uniform construction of the higher indices of elliptic operators associated to Alexander-Spanier cocycles of either parity in terms of a pairing a la Connes between the K-theory and the cyclic cohomology of the algebra of complete symbols of pseudodifferential operators, implemented by means of a relative form of the Chern character in cyclic homology. While the formula for the lowest index of an elliptic operator D on a closed manifold M (which coincides with its Fredholm index) reproduces the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, our formula for the highest index of D (associated to a volum…
Elliptic operators on stratified manifolds with any finite number of strata are considered. Under certain assumptions on the symbols of operators, we obtain index formulas, which express index as a sum of indices of elliptic operators on the strata.
In 1996, Berline and Vergne gave a cohomological formula for the index of a transversally elliptic operator. In this paper we propose a new point of view where the cohomological formulae make use of equivariant Chern characters with generalized coefficients and with compact suppport. This kind of Chern characters was studied by the authors in a previous paper (see arXiv:0801.2822).
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
We generalize Roe's index theorem for graded generalized Dirac operators on amenable manifolds to multigraded elliptic uniform pseudodifferential operators. The generalization will follow from a local index theorem that is valid on any manifold of bounded geometry. This local formula incorporates the uniform estimates present in the definition of uniform pseudodifferential operators.
We prove a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications, we obtain an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years.
We study elliptic theory on manifolds with boundary represented as a covering space. Firstly, we consider boundary value problems, where the boundary conditions are allowed to mix the values of functions in the fibers of the covering. We show that elliptic elements define Fredholm operators and prove an index formula. For the identity covering, our formula reduces to the Atiyah-Bott index formula for classical boundary value problems. Secondly, we consider Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary value problems for operators adapted to the covering. We show that the corresponding symbols have a natural h…
We compute explicitly the K-groups of some boundary groupoid C*-algebras with exponential isotropy subgroups. Then we derive index formulas that computes the K-theoretic and Fredholm indexes of elliptic (respectively totally elliptic) pseudo-differential operators on these groupoids.
In this note, we prove an index theorem on Galois covering for Heisenberg elliptic differential operators, which is not elliptic, analogous to Atiyah's $Γ$-index theorem. This note also contains an example of Heisenberg differential operators with non-trivial $Γ$-index.
We study differential operators, whose coefficients define noncommutative algebras. As algebra of coefficients, we consider crossed products, corresponding to action of a discrete group on a smooth manifold. We give index formulas for Euler, signature and Dirac operators twisted by projections over the crossed product. Index of Connes operators on the noncommutative torus is computed.
This expository paper is an introductory text on topological K-theory and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, suitable for graduate students or advanced undegraduates already possessing a background in algebraic topology. The bulk of the material presented here is distilled from Atiyah's classic "K-Theory" text, as well as his series of seminal papers "The Index of Elliptic Operators" with Singer. Additional topics include equivariant K-theory, the G-index theorem, and Bott's paper "The Index Theorem for Homogeneous Differential Operators". It also includes an appendix with a proof of Bott period…
Using recently introduced Debord-Skandalis Blup's groupoids we study index theory for a compact foliated manifold with boundary inducing a foliation in its boundary. For this we consider first a blup groupoid whose Lie algebroid has sections consisting of vector fields tangent to the leaves in the interior and tangent to the leaves of the foliation in the boundary. In particular the holonomy $b$-groupoid allows us to consider the appropriate pseudodifferential calculus and the appropriate index problems. We further use the blup groupoids as the one above, and in particular its functoriality pr…
We construct certain spectral triples in the sense of A. ~Connes and H. Moscovici (``The local index formula in noncommutative geometry'' {\it Geom. Funct. Anal.}, 5(2):174--243, 1995) that is transversally elliptic but not necessarily elliptic. We prove that these spectral triples satisfie the conditions which ensure the Connes-Moscovici local index formula applies. We show that such a spectral triple has discrete dimensional spectrum. A notable feature of the spectral triple is that its corresponding zeta functions have multiple poles, while in the classical elliptic cases only simple poles …
We give an elementary solution of the index problem for elliptic operators associated with the shift operator along the trajectories of an isometric diffeomorphism of a closed smooth manifold. This solution is based on a reduction (which preserves the index) of the operator to an elliptic pseudodifferential operator on a manifold of a higher dimension and an application of an Atiyah--Singer type formula. The final index formula is given in terms of the symbol of the operator on the original manifold.
We consider a pairing producing various cyclic Hochschild cocycles, which led Alain Connes to cyclic cohomology. We are interested in geometrical meaning and homological properties of this pairing. We define a non-trivial pairing between the homology of a Lie-Rinehart (super-)algebra with coefficients in some partial traces and relative periodic cyclic homology. This pairing generalizes the index formula for summable Fredholm modules, the Connes-Kubo formula for the Hall conductivity and the formula computing the K0-group of a smooth noncommutative torus. It also produces new homological invar…
