Gauß-Manin determinant connections associated to irregular connections on a curve are studied. The determinant of the Fourier transform of an irregular connection is calculated. The determinant of cohomology of the standard rank 2 Kloosterman sheaf is computed modulo 2 torsion. Periods associated to irregular connections are studied in the very basic $\exp(f)$ case, and analogies with the Gauß-Manin determinant are discussed.
We give an explicit formula for the determinant of the Gauß-Manin connection for an irregular connection on a Zariski open set of the projective line $¶^1_K$ over a function field $K$ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero.
The purpose of this note is to give a survey on recent progress on characteristic classes of flat bundles, and how they behave in a family.

We show that the de Rham cohomology of any separated and smooth rigid variety over a field of Laurent series of characteristic zero carries a natural formal meromorphic connection, which we call the Gauss-Manin connection. We compare it with the Gauss-Manin connection of a proper and smooth variety over a curve, and with the Gauss-Manin connection of the Milnor fibration at an isolated complex hypersurface singularity.
We study the algebraic Gauss-Manin system and the algebraic Brieskorn module associated to a polynomial mapping with isolated singularities. Since the algebraic Gauss-Manin system does not contain any information on the cohomology of singular fibers, we first construct a non quasi-coherent sheaf which gives the cohomology of every fiber. Then we study the algebraic Brieskorn module, and show that its position in the the algebraic Gauss-Manin system is determined by a natural map to quotients of local analytic Gauss-Manin systems, and its pole part by the vanishing cycles at infinity, comparing…
We study Gauss-Manin systems of non tame Laurent polynomial functions. We focuse on Hori-Vafa models, which are the expected mirror partners of the small quantum cohomology of smooth hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces.
The Gauss-Manin connection for nonabelian cohomology spaces is the isomonodromy flow. We write down explicitly the vector fields of the isomonodromy flow and calculate its induced vector fields on the associated graded space of the nonabelian Hogde filtration. The result turns out to be intimately related to the quadratic part of the Hitchin map.
In the D-modules theory, Gauss-Manin systems are defined by the direct image of the structure sheaf O by a morphism. A major theorem says that these systems have only regular singularities. This paper examines the irregularity of an analogue of the Gauss-Manin systems. It consists in the direct image complex of a D-module twisted by the exponential of a polynomial g by another polynomial f, where f and g are two polynomials in two variables. The analogue of the Gauss-Manin systems can have irregular singularities (at finite distance and at infinity). We express an invariant associated with the…
In this paper we provide a purely algebraic characterization of the exponents of one-dimensional direct images of a structure sheaf by a rational function, related to the vanishing of the cohomologies of a certain Koszul complex associated with such a morphism. This can be extended to a more general family of Gauss-Manin systems. As an application, we calculate a set of possible exponents of the Gauss-Manin cohomology of some arrangements of hyperplanes with multiplicities, relevant to Dwork families and mirror symmetry.
For any $t\in\mN$, we define a certain positive integer $\N_t$ and we conjecture: if $H$ is a Gauss-Manin bundle of a semi-stable fibration then the $t$-th Chern class of $H$ is kiled by $\N_t$. We prove various consequences of this conjecture.
For quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities, the logarithmic comparison theorem has been characterized explicitly by Holland and Mond. In the non quasihomogeneous case, we give a necessary condition for the logarithmic comparison theorem in terms of the Gauss-Manin system of the singularity. It shows in particular that the logarithmic comparison theorem can hold for a non quasihomogeneous singularity only if 1 is an eigenvalue of the monodromy.
Let f,g be two algebraically independent regular functions from the smooth affine complex variety U to the affine line. The associated exponential Gauss-Manin systems on the affine line are defined to be the cohomology sheaves of the direct image of the exponential differential system $\mathcal{O}_U e^g $ with respect to f. We prove that its holomorphic solutions admit representations in terms of period integrals over topological chains with possibly closed support and with rapid decay condition.
We investigate differential systems occurring in the study of particular non-isolated singularities, the so-called linear free divisors. We obtain a duality theorem for these D-modules taking into account filtrations, and deduce degeneration properties of certain Frobenius manifolds associated to linear sections of the Milnor fibres of the divisor.

In this note we study families of Gauss-Manin systems arising from Laurent polynomials with parametric coefficients under projection to the parameter space. For suitable matrices of exponent vectors, we exhibit a natural four-term exact sequence for which we then give an interpretation via generalized A-hypergeometric systems. We determine the extension groups from the parameter sheaf to the middle term of this sequence and show that the four-term sequence does not split. Auxiliary results include the computation of Ext and Tor groups of A-hypergeometric systems against the parameter sheaf.

We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of an arrangement of complex hyperplanes in the cohomology of a complex rank one local system. We define formal Gauss-Manin connection matrices in the Aomoto complex and prove that, for all arrangements and all local systems, these formal connection matrices specialize to Gauss-Manin connection matrices.
We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of an arrangement of complex hyperplanes in the cohomology of a nonresonant complex rank one local system. Aomoto and Kita determined this Gauss-Manin connection for arrangements in general position. We use their results and an algorithm constructed in this paper to determine this Gauss-Manin connection for all arrangements.

We construct a formal connection on the Aomoto complex of an arrangement of hyperplanes, and use it to study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of the arrangement in the cohomology of a complex rank one local system. We prove that the eigenvalues of the Gauss-Manin connection are integral linear combinations of the weights which define the local system.
In this paper, we explicitly derive the generalized mirror transformation of quantum cohomology of general type projective hypersurfaces, proposed in our previous article, as an effect of coordinate change of the virtual Gauss-Manin system.

An arrangement is a finite set of hyperplanes in a finite dimensional complex affine space. A complex rank one local system on the arrangement complement is determined by a set of complex weights for the hyperplanes. We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of arrangements of fixed combinatorial type in the cohomology of the complement with coefficients in the local system determined by the weights. For nonresonant weights, we solve the eigenvalue problem for the endomorphisms arising in the 1-form associated to the Gauss-Manin connection.
In this article we introduce algorithms which compute iterations of Gauss-Manin connections, Picard-Fuchs equations of Abelian integrals and mixed Hodge structure of affine varieties of dimension $n$ in terms of differential forms. In the case $n=1$ such computations have many applications in differential equations and counting their limit cycles. For $n>3$, these computations give us an explicit definition of Hodge cycles.
We defined the Gauß-Manin stratification of a stratified bundle with respect to a smooth morphism and use it to study the homotopy sequence of stratified fundamental group schemes.
We consider a weighted family of $n$ generic parallelly translated hyperplanes in $\C^k$ and describe the characteristic variety of the Gauss-Manin differential equations for associated hypergeometric integrals. The characteristic variety is given as the zero set of Laurent polynomials, whose coefficients are determined by weights and the Plucker coordinates of the associated point in the Grassmannian Gr(k,n). The Laurent polynomials are in involution.
We study the Brieskorn modules associated to a germ of holomorphic function with non-isolated singularities, and show that the Brieskorn module has naturally a structure of a module over the ring of microdifferential operators of nonpositive degree, and that the kernel of the morphism to the Gauss-Manin system coincides with the torsion part for the action of $t$ and also with that for the action of the inverse of the Gauss-Manin connection. This torsion part is not finitely generated in general, and we give a sufficient condition for the finiteness. We also prove a Thom-Sebastiani type theore…
We study differential forms on the universal vector extension $A^\natural$ of an abelian scheme $A$ in characteristic zero, and derive a new construction of the $D$-group scheme structure on $A^\natural$. This gives, in particular, a rather simple description of the Gauss--Manin connection on the de Rham cohomology of $A$ in terms of global algebraic differential forms on $A^\natural$. The key ingredient is the computation of the coherent cohomology of $A^{\natural}$, due to Coleman and Laumon.
One studies the system of differential equations satisfied by the hyperelliptic integral associated to a vanishing cycle defined for the versal deformation of the $A-μ$ singularity. As an application, the estimates on the multiplicity of zeros of the hyperelliptic integral are given as a linear function of the degree of present polynomials.
We interpolate the Gauss-Manin connection in p-adic families of nearly overconvergent modular forms. This gives a family of Maass-Shimura type differential operators from the space of nearly overconvergent modular forms of type r to the space of nearly overconvergent modular forms of type r + 1 with p-adic weight shifted by 2. Our construction is purely geometric, using Andreatta-Iovita-Stevens and Pilloni's geometric construction of eigencurves, and should thus generalize to higher rank groups.
The Gauss-Manin connection of a family of hypersurfaces governs the change of the period matrix along the family. This connection can be complicated even when the equations defining the family look simple. When this is the case, it is computationally expensive to compute the period matrices of varieties in the family via homotopy continuation. We train neural networks that can quickly and reliably guess the complexity of the Gauss-Manin connection of a pencil of hypersurfaces. As an application, we compute the periods of 96% of smooth quartic surfaces in projective 3-space whose defining equat…
We associate to any convenient nondegenerate Laurent polynomial on the complex torus (C^*)^n a canonical Frobenius-Saito structure on the base space of its universal unfolding. According to the method of K. Saito (primitive forms) and of M. Saito (good basis of the Gauss-Manin system), the main problem, which is solved in this article, is the analysis of the Gauss-Manin system of the Laurent polynomial (or its universal unfolding) and of the corresponding Hodge theory.
We study here the relative cohomology and the Gauss-Manin connections associated to an isolated singularity of a function on a manifold with boundary, i.e. with a fixed hyperplane section. We prove several relative analogs of classical theorems obtained mainly by E. Brieskorn and B. Malgrange, concerning the properties of the Gauss-Manin connection as well as its relations with the Picard-Lefschetz monodromy and the asymptotics of integrals of holomorphic forms along the vanishing cycles. Finally, we give an application in isochore deformation theory, i.e. the deformation theory of boundary si…
We consider a weighted family of $n$ parallelly transported hyperplanes in a $k$-dimensioinal affine space and describe the characteristic variety of the Gauss-Manin differential equations for associated hypergeometric integrals. The characteristic variety is given as the zero set of Laurent polynomials, whose coefficients are determined by weights and the associated point in the Grassmannian Gr$(k,n)$. The Laurent polynomials are in involution. An intermediate object between the differential equations and the characteristic variety is the algebra of functions on the critical set of the associ…
We consider the moduli space of abelian varieties with two marked points and a frame of the relative de Rham cohomolgy with boundary at these points compatible with its mixed Hodge structure. Such a moduli space gives a natural algebro-geometric framework for higher genus quasi Jacobi forms of index zero and their differential equations which are given as vector fields. In the case of elliptic curves we compute explicitly the Gauss-Manin connection and such vector fields.
We derive the complete list of singularities of propagators in theories with arbitrary (complex) masses and for arbitrary diagram. We derive in a closed form differential equations for the propagator as a function of the momentum and masses.
Originally conjectured unpublished by Grothendieck, then formulated precisely by Katz, the $p$-curvature conjecture is a local-global principle for algebraic differential equations. It is at present open, though various cases are known. Katz subsequently proved this conjecture in a wide range of cases, for differential equations corresponding to the Gauss-Manin connection on algebraic de Rham cohomology. This dissertation addresses the non-abelian analogue of Katz' theorem, in the sense of Simpson's non-abelian Hodge theory, surveyed by Simpson and later developed in characteristic $p$ by Ogus…
We describe an algebra of meromorphic functions on the Siegel domain of genus two which contains Siegel modular forms for an arithmetic index six subgroup of the symplectic group and it is closed under three canonical derivations of the Siegel domain. The main ingredients of our study are the moduli of enhanced genus two curves, Gauss-Manin connection and the modular vector fields living on such moduli spaces.
The Euler-Koszul complex is the fundamental tool in the homological study of A-hypergeometric differential systems and functions. We compare Euler-Koszul homology with D-module direct images from the torus to the base space through orbits in the corresponding toric variety. Our approach generalizes a result by Gel'fand et al. and yields a simpler, more algebraic proof. In the process we extend the Euler-Koszul functor a category of infinite toric modules and describe multigraded localizations of Euler-Koszul homology.

We give an explicit description of the canonical Frobenius structure attached (by the results of the first part of this article) to the polynomial f(u_0,...,u_n)=w_0u_0+...+w_nu_n restricted to the torus u_0^{w_0}...u_n^{w_n}=1, for any family of positive integers w_0,...,w_n such that gcd(w_0,...,w_n)=1.
We consider the Gauss-Manin differential equations for hypergeometric integrals associated with a family of weighted arrangements of hyperplanes moving parallelly to themselves. We reduce these equations modulo a prime integer $p$ and construct polynomial solutions of the new differential equations as $p$-analogs of the initial hypergeometric integrals. In some cases we interpret the $p$-analogs of the hypergeometric integrals as sums over points of hypersurfaces defined over the finite field $F_p$. That interpretation is similar to the interpretation by Yu.I. Manin in [Ma] of the number of po…

We describe a Lie Algebra on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds enhanced with differential forms and its relation to the Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa holomorphic anomaly equation. In particular, we describe algebraic topological string partition functions $F_g^{alg}, g\geq 1$, which encode the polynomial structure of holomorphic and non-holomorphic topological string partition functions. Our approach is based on Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham cohomology and on the algebraic Gauss-Manin connection. In this way, we recover a result of Yamaguchi-Yau and Alim-Länge in an algebraic conte…
In this paper we consider holomorphic families of frescos (i.e. filtered differential equations with a regular singularity) and we construct a locally versal holomorphic family for every fixed Bernstein polynomial. We construct also several holomorphic parameters (a holomorphic parameter is a function defined on a set of isomorphism classes of frescos) which are quasi-invariant by changes of variable. This is motivated by the fact that a fresco is associated to a relative de Rham cohomology class on a one parameter degeneration of compact complex manifolds, up to a change of variable in the pa…
The Mellin transform of fibre integral is calculated for certain isolated singularities of quasihomogeneous complete intersections (especially the unimodal singualrities of the list by Giusti and Wall). We show the property of symmetry between spectra of Gauss-Manin and shed light on the lattice structure of poles of the Mellin transform by means of topological data of the singularity. As an application, Hodge numbers of the Milnor fibre are expressed by counting the spectra of Gauss-Manin.
We study mirror symmetry of families of elliptic K3 surfaces with elliptic fibers of type $E_6,~E_7$ and $E_8$. We consider a moduli space $\mathsf{T}$ of the mirror K3 surfaces enhanced with the choice of differential forms. We show that coordinates on $\mathsf{T}$ are given by the ring of quasi modular forms in two variables, with modular groups adapted to the fiber type. We furthermore introduce an algebraic group $\mathsf{G}$ which acts on $\mathsf{T}$ from the right and construct its Lie algebra $\mathrm{Lie}(\mathsf{G})$. We prove that the extended Lie algebra generated by $\mathrm{Lie}(…
We study the moduli space $\textsf{T}$ of the Calabi-Yau $n$-folds arising from the Dwork family and enhanced with bases of the $n$-th de Rham cohomology with constant cup product and compatible with Hodge filtration. We also describe a unique vector field $\textsf{R}$ in $\textsf{T}$ which contracted with the Gauss-Manin connection gives an upper triangular matrix with some non-constant entries which are natural generalizations of Yukawa couplings. For $n=1,2$ we compute explicit expressions of $\textsf{R}$ and give a solution of $\textsf{R}$ in terms of quasi-modular forms. The moduli space …
It is expected that the periodic cyclic homology of a DG algebra over the field of complex numbers (and, more generally, the periodic cyclic homology of a DG category) carries a lot of additional structure similar to the mixed Hodge structure on the de Rham cohomology of algebraic varieties. Whereas a construction of such a structure seems to be out of reach at the moment its counterpart in finite characteristic is much better understood thanks to recent groundbreaking works of Kaledin. In particular, it is proven by Kaledin that under some assumptions on a DG algebra $A$ over a perfect field …
We present a new approach to cyclic homology that does not involve the Connes differential and is based on a `noncommutative equivariant de Rham complex' of an associative algebra. The differential in that complex is a sum of the Karoubi-de Rham differential, which replaces the Connes differential, and another operation analogous to contraction with a vector field. As a byproduct, we give a simple explicit construction of the Gauss-Manin connection, introduced earlier by E. Getzler, on the relative cyclic homology of a flat family of associative algebras over a central base ring. We introduce …
Let $A$ be a $d$ by $n$ integer matrix. Gel'fand et al. proved that most $A$-hypergeometric systems have an interpretation as a Fourier--Laplace transform of a direct image. The set of parameters for which this happens was later identified by Schulze and Walther as the set of not strongly resonant parameters of $A$. A similar statement relating $A$-hypergeometric systems to exceptional direct images was proved by Reichelt. In this article, we consider a hybrid approach involving neighborhoods $U$ of the torus of $A$ and consider compositions of direct and exceptional direct images. Our main re…

We give a classification of components of the Hodge locus in any parameter space of smooth projective varieties. This is done using determinantal varieties constructed from the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures (IVHS) of the underlying family. As a corollary we prove that the minimum codimension for the components of the Hodge locus in the parameter space of $m$-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with $d\geq 2+\frac{4}{m}$ and in a Zariski neighborhood of the point representing the Fermat variety, is obtained by the locus of hypersurfaces passing through an $\frac{m}{2}$-dimensi…
In this paper we strengthen the results of [SV] by presenting their derived version. Namely, we define a "derived Knizhnik - Zamolodchikov connection"\ and identify it with a "derived Gauss - Manin connection".
This is a review article on the Gauss-Manin system associated to the complete intersection singularities of projection. We show how the logarithmic vector fields appear as coefficients to the Gauss-Manin system. We examine further how the multiplication table on the Jacobian quotient module calculates the logarithmic vector fields tangent to the discriminant and the bifurcation set . As applications, we establish signature formulae for Euler characteristics of real hypersurfaces and real complete intersections by means of these fields.
