This paper surveys, in the first place, some basic facts from the classification theory of normal complex singularities, including details for the low dimensions 2 and 3. Next, it describes how the toric singularities are located within the class of rational singularities, and recalls their main properties. Finally, it focuses, in particular, on a toric version of Reid's desingularization strategy in dimension three
It is a long-standing question whether an arbitrary variety is desingularized by finitely many normalized Nash blow-ups. We consider this question in the case of a toric variety. We interpret the normalized Nash blow-up in polyhedral terms, show how continued fractions can be used to give an affirmative answer for a toric surface, and report on a computer investigation in which over a thousand 3- and 4-dimensional toric varieties were successfully resolved.
Using the structure of the jet schemes of rational double point singularities, we construct "minimal embedded toric resolutions" of these singularities. We also establish, for these singularities, a correspondence between a natural class of irreducible components of the jet schemes centered at the singular locus and the set of divisors which appear on every "minimal embedded toric resolution". We prove that this correspondence is bijective except for the $E_8$ singulartiy. This can be thought as an embedded Nash correspondence for rational double point singularities.
Firstly, we see that the bases of the miniversal deformations of isolated $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein toric singularities are quite restricted. In particular, we classify the analytic germs of embedding dimension $\leq 2$ which are the bases of the miniversal deformations of isolated $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein toric singularities. Secondly, we show that the deformation spaces of isolated Gorenstein toric $3$-fold singularities appear, in a weak sense, as singularities of the K-moduli stack of K-semistable Fano varieties of every dimension $\geq 3$. For a toric log variety with standard coefficients, we show that the minimal log discrepancy at a closed invariant point bounds the Cartier index of a neighbourhood.
This is the major revision. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that minimal discrepancies of $n$-dimensional toric singularities can accumulate only from above and only to minimal discrepancies of toric singularities of dimension less than $n$. I also prove that some lower-dimensional minimal discrepancies do appear as such limit.
We give a criterion for the existence of non-commutative crepant resolutions (NCCR's) for certain toric singularities. In particular we recover Broomhead's result that a 3-dimensional toric Gorenstein singularity has a NCCR. Our result also yields the existence of a NCCR for a 4-dimensional toric Gorenstein singularity which is known to have no toric NCCR.
We give an explicit positive answer, in the case of reduced curve singularities, to a question of B. Teissier about the existence of a toric embedded resolution after reembedding. In the case of a curve singularity $(C,O)$ contained in a non singular surface $S$ such a reembedding may be defined in terms of a sequence of maximal contact curves of the minimal embedded resolution of $C$. We prove that there exists a toric modification, after reembedding, which provides an embedded resolution of $C$. We study function germs on toric varieties which are nondegenerate for their Newton diagram. We express their motivic Milnor fibre in terms of their Newton diagram. We extend a formula for the motivic nearby fibre to the case of a toroidal degeneration. We illustrate this by some examples.
In 1988 S. Mori, D. Morrison, and I. Morrison gave a computer-based conjectural classification of four-dimensional cyclic quotient singularities of prime index. It was partially proven in 1990 by G. Sankaran. In 1991 Jim Lawrence basically proved this and much more, been unaware of algebro-geometric meaning of what he did. In this short note I just bring this all together to prove that all n-dimensional toric singularities with log-discrepancy greater than (or equal to) $ε$ form finitely many "series".
In the case of two-dimensional cyclic quotient singularities, we classify all one-parameter toric deformations in terms of certain Minkowski decompositions. In particular, we describe to which components each such deformation maps, show how to induce each deformation from a versal family, give explicit equations for each deformation, describe the singularities in the general fibers, and construct the corresponding partial simultaneous resolutions.
Lejeune-Jalabert and Reguera computed the geometric Poincare series P_{geom}(T) for toric surface singularities. They raise the question whether this series equals the arithmetic Poincare series. We prove this equality for a class of toric varieties including the surfaces, and construct a counterexample in the general case. We also compute the motivic Igusa Poincare series Q_{geom}(T) for toric surface singularities, using the change of variables formula for motivic integrals, thus answering a second question of Lejeune-Jalabert and Reguera's. We build two embedded resolution procedures of a quasi-ordinary singularity of complex analytic hypersurface, by using toric morphisms which depend only on the characteristic monomials associated to a quasi-ordinary projection of the singularity. This result answers an open problem of Lipman in Equisingularity and simultaneous resolution of singularities, Resolution of Singularities, Progress in Mathematics No. 181, 2000, 485-503. For affine toric varieties, the vector space T1 (containing the infinitesimal deformations) will be interpreted via Minkowski summands of cross cuts of the defining polyhedral cone. This result will be applied to study the deformation theory of (in particular non-isolated) three-dimensional Gorenstein singularities.
We generalize a theorem of Delzant classifying compact connected symplectic manifolds with completely integrable torus actions to certain singular symplectic spaces. The assumption on singularities is that if they are not finite quotient then they are isolated.
This paper classifies all toric Fano 3-folds with terminal singularities. This is achieved by solving the equivalent combinatoric problem; that of finding, up to the action of GL(3,Z), all convex polytopes in Z^3 which contain the origin as the only non-vertex lattice point.
Using the theory of dimer models Broomhead proved that every 3-dimensional Gorenstein affine toric variety Spec R admits a toric non-commutative crepant resolution (NCCR). We give an alternative proof of this result by constructing a tilting bundle on a (stacky) crepant resolution of Spec R using standard toric methods. Our proof does not use dimer models.
In this paper we investigate singularities on toric fibrations. In this context we study a conjecture of Shokurov (a special case of which is due to M$^\rm{c}$Kernan) which roughly says that if $(X,B)\to Z$ is an $ε$-lc Fano type log Calabi-Yau fibration, then the singularities of the log base $(Z,B_Z+M_Z)$ are bounded in terms of $ε$ and $\dim X$ where $B_Z,M_Z$ are the discriminant and moduli divisors of the canonical bundle formula. A corollary of our main result says that if $X\to Z$ is a toric Fano fibration with $X$ being $ε$-lc, then the multiplicities of the fibres over codimension one…
In this paper, we study a class of toric ideals obtained by using some geometric data of ADE trees which are the minimal resolution graphs of rational surface singularities. We compute explicit Gröbner bases for these toric ideals that are also minimal generating sets consisting of large number of binomials of degree $\leq 4$. In particular, they give rise to squarefree initial ideals as well.
In [Kat94b], Kato defined his notion of a log regular scheme and studied the local behavior of such schemes. A toric variety equipped with its canonical logarithmic structure is log regular. And, these schemes allow one to generalize toric geometry to a theory that does not require a base field. This paper will extend this theory by removing normality requirements.
Based on Nakajima's Classification Theorem we describe the precise form of the binomial equations which determine toric locally complete intersection ("l.c.i'') singularities.
We introduce the class of weakly log canonical singularities, a natural generalization of semi-log canonical singularities. Toric varieties (associated to toric face rings, possibly non-normal or reducible) which have weakly (semi-) log canonical singularities are classified. In the toric case, we discuss residues to lc centers of codimension one or higher.
It is known that the underlying spaces of all abelian quotient singularities which are embeddable as complete intersections of hypersurfaces in an affine space can be overall resolved by means of projective torus-equivariant crepant birational morphisms in all dimensions. In the present paper we extend this result to the entire class of toric l.c.i.-singularities. Our proof makes use of Nakajima's classification theorem and of some special techniques from toric and discrete geometry.
Given a polyhedral cone sigma with smooth two-dimensional faces and, moreover, a lattice point R in the dual cone of sigma, we describe the part of the versal deformation of the associated toric variety TV(sigma) that is built from the deformation parameters of multidegree R. Let Q the polyhedron obtained by intersecting sigma with the hyperplane R=1. Then the base space is (the germ of) an affine scheme that reflects certain possibilities of splitting Q into Minkowski summands.
We study the normalized volume of toric singularities. As it turns out, there is a close relation to the notion of (non-symmetric) Mahler volume from convex geometry. This observation allows us to use standard tools from convex geometry, such as the Blaschke-Santaló inequality and Radon's theorem to prove non-trivial facts about the normalized volume in the toric setting. For example, we prove that for every $ε> 0$ there are only finitely many $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein toric singularities with normalized volume at least $ε$. A necessary condition for the existence of torus-equivariant crepant resolutions of Gorenstein toric singularities can be derived by making use of a variant of the classical Upper Bound Theorem which is valid for simplicial balls.

The geometric motivic Poincaré series of a variety, which was introduced by Denef and Loeser, takes into account the classes in the Grothendieck ring of the sequence of jets of arcs in the variety. Denef and Loeser proved that this series has a rational form. We describe it in the case of an affine toric variety of arbitrary dimension. The result, which provides an explicit set of candidate poles, is expressed in terms of the sequence of Newton polyhedra of certain monomial ideals, which we call logarithmic jacobian ideals, associated to the modules of differential forms with logarithmic poles…
We explicitly describe infintesimal deformations of cyclic quotient singularities that satisfy one of the deformation conditions introduced by Wahl, Kollár-Shepherd-Barron and Viehweg. The conclusion is that in many cases these three notions are different from each other. In particular, we see that while the KSB and the Viehweg versions of the moduli space of surfaces of general type have the same underlying reduced subscheme, their infinitesimal structures are different.
This paper discusses a central theorem in birational geometry first proved by Eugenio Bertini in 1891. J.L. Coolidge described the main ideas behind Bertini's proof, but he attributed the theorem to Clebsch. He did so owing to a short note that Felix Klein appended to the republication of Bertini's article in 1894. The precise circumstances that led to Klein's intervention can be easily reconstructed from letters Klein exchanged with Max Noether, who was then completing work on the lengthy report he and Alexander Brill published on the history of algebraic functions [Brill/Noether 1894]. A toric del Pezzo surface $X_P$ with cyclic quotient singularities determines and is determined by a Fano polygon $P$. We construct an affine manifold with singularities that partially smooths the boundary of $P$; this a tropical version of a Q-Gorenstein partial smoothing of $X_P$. We implement a mild generalization of the Gross-Siebert reconstruction algorithm - allowing singularities that are not locally rigid - and thereby construct (a formal version of) this partial smoothing directly from the affine manifold. We construct a two-dimensional crystal melting model which reproduces the BPS index of D2-D0 states bound to a non-compact D4-brane on an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau singularity. The crystalline structure depends on the toric divisor wrapped by the D4-brane. The molten crystals are in one-to-one correspondence with the torus fixed points of the moduli space of the quiver gauge theory on D-branes. The F- and D-term constraints of the gauge theory are regarded as a generalization of the ADHM constraints on instantons. This article is a continuation of [Kub18], which proves that if a $3$-dimensional affine normal quasihomogeneous $SL(2)$-variety $E$ is toric, then it has an equivariant resolution of singularities given by an invariant Hilbert scheme $\mathcal H$. In this article, we consider the case where $E$ is non-toric and show that the Hilbert-Chow morphism $γ: \mathcal H \to E$ is a resolution of singularities and that $\mathcal H$ is isomorphic to the minimal resolution of a weighted blow-up of $E$.
P-resolutions of two-dimensional, cyclic quotient singularities have been introduced to study deformation theory. Those P-resolutions (as well as the singularities themselves) are toric varieties. In the present paper we give a straight, elementary description of them just by their defining fans.
For an affine, toric Q-Gorenstein variety Y (given by a lattice polytope Q) the vector space T^1 of infinitesimal deformations is related to the complexified vector spaces of rational Minkowski summands of faces of Q. Moreover, assuming Y to be an isolated, at least 3-dimensional singularity, Y will be rigid unless it is even Gorenstein and dim Y=3 (dim Q=2). For this particular case, so-called toric deformations of Y correspond to Minkowski decompositions of Q into a sum of lattice polygons. We study toric G-solid Fano threefolds that have at most terminal singularities, where G is an algebraic subgroup of the normalizer of a maximal torus in their automorphism groups.
We give a complete classification of del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities and Picard rank 1 which admit a Q-Gorenstein smoothing. There are 14 infinite families of toric examples. The surfaces in each family correspond to solutions of a Markov-type equation. The remaining surfaces are obtained as deformations of the toric surfaces or belong to a finite list of sporadic surfaces.
We show that every 3-dimensional affine normal quasihomogeneous $SL(2)$-variety has an equivariant resolution of singularities given by an invariant Hilbert scheme. This article treats the case where such $SL(2)$-variety is toric. The non-toric case is considered in the forthcoming article [Kub18].

We compute the Nekrasov partition function of gauge theories on the (resolved) toric singularities C^2/Γin terms of blow-up formulae. We discuss the expansion of the partition function in the ε_1,ε_2 \to 0 limit along with its modular properties and how to derive them from the M-theory perspective. On the two-dimensional conformal field theory side, our results can be interpreted in terms of representations of the direct sum of Heisenberg plus W_N-algebrae with suitable central charges, which can be computed from the fan of the resolved toric variety.We provide a check of this correspondence b…
For a flat family of Du Val singularities, we can take a simultaneous resolution after finite base change. It is an interesting problem to consider this analogy for a flat family of higher dimensional canonical singularities. In this note, we consider an existence of simultaneous terminalization for K.
