In the first part of the paper a general notion of sampling expansions for locally compact groups is introduced, and its close relationship to the discretisation problem for generalised wavelet transforms is established. In the second part, attention is focussed on the simply connected nilpotent Heisenberg group $\HH$. We derive criteria for the existence of discretisations and sampling expansions associated to lattices in $\HH$. Analogies and differences to the sampling theorem over the reals are discussed, in particular a notion of bandwidth on $\HH$ will figure prominently. The main tools for the characterisation are the Plancherel formula of $\HH$ and the theory of Weyl-Heisenberg frames. In the last section we compute an explicit example
The paper deals with the necessary and sufficient conditions for obtaining reconstruction formulae and sampling theorems for every function belonging to the principal shift invariant subspace of $L^2(\mathbb{H}^n)$, both in the time domain and a transform domain, where $\mathbb{H}^n$ denotes the Heisenberg group.
If $f$ is a compactly supported function on the Heisenberg group and the group Fourier transform $\hat{f}(λ)$ is a finite rank operator for all $λ$ then $f$ is the zero function.
We study the Segal-Bargmann transform on the Heisenberg motion groups $\mathbb{H}^n \ltimes K,$ where $\mathbb{H}^n$ is the Heisenberg group and $K$ is a compact subgroup of $U(n)$ such that $(K,\mathbb{H}^n)$ is a Gelfand pair. The Poisson integrals associated to the Laplacian for the Heisenberg motion group are also characterized using Gutzmer's formulae. Explicitly realizing certain unitary irreducible representations of $\mathbb{H}^n \ltimes K,$ we prove the Plancherel theorem. A Paley-Wiener type theorem is proved using complexified representations.
We formulate and prove an analogue of Beurling's theorem for the Fourier transform on the Heisenberg group. As a consequence we deduce Hardy and Cowling-Price theorems.
Since $(\mathbb{H}^n\rtimes U(n),U(n))$ is a Gelfand pair, an exact analogue of the Heisenberg group result due to Narayanan and Ratnakumar is not possible for the Heisenberg motion group. In this article, we prove that if the Weyl transform of a finitely supported integrable function on the Heisenberg motion group is non-zero only for finitely many Fourier-Wigner pieces and have finite rank, then the function must be zero. We also prove an analogue of the Heisenberg group result on the quaternion Heisenberg group. In the end, a quantitative interpretation of these results is described through…
We prove an analogue of Chernoff's theorem for the sublaplacian on the Heisenberg group and use it prove a version of Ingham's theorem for the Fourier transform on the same group.
In this paper we extend some classical results of Convex Analysis to the sub-Riemannian setting of the Heisenberg group. In particular, we provide a horizontal version of Minty's theorem concerning maximal H-monotone operators defined in the Heisenberg group with values in the first layer of its Lie algebra.
We prove an analogue of Chernoff's theorem for the Laplacian $ Δ_{\mathbb{H}} $ on the Heisenberg group $ \mathbb{H}^n.$ As an application, we prove Ingham type theorems for the group Fourier transform on $ \mathbb{H}^n $ and also for the spectral projections associated to the sublaplacian.
This paper considers generators of Heisenberg modules in the case of twisted group $C^*$-algebras of closed subgroups of locally compact abelian groups and how the restrction and/or periodization of these generators yield generators for other Heisenberg modules. Since generators of Heisenberg modules are exactly the generators of (multi-window) Gabor frames, our methods are going to be from Gabor analy\-sis. In the latter setting the procedure of restriction and periodization of generators is well known. Our results extend this established part of Gabor analy\-sis to the general setting of loc…
We prove several Paley--Wiener-type theorems related to the spherical transform on the Gelfand pair $\big(H_n\rtimes U(n),U(n)\big)$, where $H_n$ is the $2n+1$-dimensional Heisenberg group. Adopting the standard realization of the Gelfand spectrum as the Heisenberg fan in ${\mathbb R}^2$, we prove that spherical transforms of $ U(n)$--invariant functions and distributions with compact support in $H_n$ admit unique entire extensions to ${\mathbb C}^2$, and we find real-variable characterizations of such transforms. Next, we characterize the inverse spherical transforms of compactly supported fu…
We prove an exact analogue of Ingham's uncertainty principle for the group Fourier transform on the Heisenberg group. This is accomplished by explicitly constructing compactly supported functions on the Heisenberg group whose operator-valued Fourier transforms have suitable Ingham type decay and proving an analogue of Chernoff's theorem for the family of special Hermite operators.
We prove a $C^m$ Lusin approximation theorem for horizontal curves in the Heisenberg group. This states that every absolutely continuous horizontal curve whose horizontal velocity is $m-1$ times $L^1$ differentiable almost everywhere coincides with a $C^m$ horizontal curve except on a set of small measure. Conversely, we show that the result no longer holds if $L^1$ differentiability is replaced by approximate differentiability. This shows our result is optimal and highlights differences between the Heisenberg and Euclidean settings.
Gabor frames with Hermite functions are equivalent to sampling sequences in true Fock spaces of polyanalytic functions. In the L^2-case, such an equivalence follows from the unitarity of the polyanalytic Bargmann transform. We will introduce Banach spaces of polyanalytic functions and investigate the mapping properties of the polyanalytic Bargmann transform on modulation spaces. By applying the theory of coorbit spaces and localized frames to the Fock representation of the Heisenberg group, we derive explicit polyanalytic sampling theorems which can be seen as a polyanalytic version of the lat…
We characterise higher order Riesz transforms on the Heisenberg group and also show that they satisfy dimension-free bounds under some assumptions on the multipliers. Using transfer- ence theorems, we deduce boundedness theorems for Riesz trans- forms on the reduced Heisenberg group and hence also for the Riesz transforms associated to multiple Hermite and Laguerre ex- pansions.
We prove maximal ergodic theorems for spherical averages on the Heisenberg groups acting on $L_p$ spaces over measure spaces not necessarily commutative, that is, on noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. The scale of $p$ is optimal in the reduced Heisenberg group case. We also obtain the corresponding individual ergodic theorems and differential theorems in the noncommutative setting. The results can be regarded as noncommutative analogues of Nevo-Thangavelu's ergodic theorems. The approach of proof involves recent developments in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces and in noncommutative harmonic analysis, in …
We define a scalar valued Fourier transform for functions on the Heisenberg group and establish some of its basic properties like inversion formula, Plancherel theorem and Riemann-Lebesgue lemma. We also restate certain well known theorems for the group Fourier transform in terms of the new transform which we would like to call Strichartz Fourier transform.
We characterize which mappings from a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$ into the Heisenberg group can be extended to a $C^{m,ω}$ horizontal curve for a given modulus of continuity $ω$. We motivate our characterization by showing that the $C^{m,ω}$ extension property fails if we instead use a more direct analogue of the conditions from the $C^{m}$ case.
In this paper we prove that every collection of measurable functions $f_α$, $|α|=m$ coincides a.e. with $m$th order derivatives of a function $g\in C^{m-1}$ whose derivatives of order $m-1$ may have any modulus of continuity weaker than that of a Lipschitz function. This is a stronger version of earlier results of Lusin, Moonens-Pfeffer and Francos. As an application we construct surfaces in the Heisenberg group with tangent spaces being horizontal a.e.
This paper is dedicated to the proof of Strichartz estimates on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^d$ for the linear Schrödinger and wave equations involving the sublaplacian. The Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{H}^d$ is an example of a totally non-dispersive evolution equation: for this reason the classical approach that permits to obtain Strichartz estimates from dispersive estimates is not available. Our approach, inspired by the Fourier transform restriction method initiated by Tomas and Stein, is based on Fourier restriction theorems on $\mathbb{H}^d$, using the non-commutative Fourier tra…
We present a general approach to derive sampling theorems on locally compact groups from oscillation estimates. We focus on the ${\rm L}^2$-stability of the sampling operator by using notions from frame theory. This approach yields particularly simple and transparent reconstruction procedures. We then apply these methods to the discretization of discrete series representations and to Paley-Wiener spaces on stratified Lie groups.
Two measurable sets $S, Λ\subseteq \mathcal{R}^d$ form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair, if every bounded measure $μ$ with support in S whose Fourier transform vanishes on Λ must be zero. We show that a quadratic hypersurface and the union of two hyperplanes in general position form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair in $\mathcal{R}^d$. As a corollary we obtain a new, surprising version of the classical Cramér-Wold theorem: a bounded measure supported on a quadratic hypersurface is uniquely determined by its projections onto two generic hyperplanes (whereas an arbitrary measure requires the knowledge of…
In the spirit of an earlier result of Müller on the Heisenberg group we prove a restriction theorem on a certain class of two step nilpotent Lie groups. Our result extends that of Müller also in the framework of the Heisenberg group.
Numerous Lie supergroups do not admit superunitary representations except the trivial one, e.g., Heisenberg and orthosymplectic supergroups in mixed signature. To avoid this situation, we introduce in this paper a broader definition of superunitary representation, relying on a new definition of Hilbert superspace. The latter is inspired by the notion of Krein space and was developed initially for noncommutative supergeometry. For Heisenberg supergroups, this new approach yields a smooth generalization, whatever the signature, of the unitary representation theory of the classical Heisenberg gro…
In this paper we prove weighted norm inequalities for Weyl multipliers satisfying Mauceri's condition. As applications of this we obtain some estimates for $L^p$ multipliers on the Heisenberg group and also show in the context of a theorem of Weis on operator valued Fourier multipliers that the R-boundedness of the derivative of the multiplier is not necessary for the boundedness of the multiplier transform.
In the article we generalize the Marcinkiewicz sampling theorem in the context of Orlicz spaces. We establish conditions under which sampling theorem holds in terms of restricted submultiplicativity and supermultiplicativity of an $N$-function $φ$, boundedness of the Hilbert transform and Matuszewska-Orlicz indices. In addition we give a new criterion for boundedness of Hilbert transform on Orlicz space.
Let $\mathcal{H}=-Δ_{\mathbb{H}}+V$ be the Schrödinger operator on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$, where $Δ_{\mathbb{H}}$ is the full laplacian on $\mathbb{H}^n$ and $V$ is a positive smooth potential, bounded below and grows like $|g|^κ, κ>0$ for large $|g|$. Let $\mathcal{P}_{r}$ be the orthogonal projection of $L^2(\mathbb{H}^n)$ onto the space of eigenfunctions of $\mathcal{H}$ with eigenvalue $\leq r$; Let $A$ be a 0-th order self-adjoint pseudo-differential operator on $L^2(\mathbb{H}^n)$ relative to the operator $1+|λ|H+V(g), g\in \mathbb{H}^n, λ\in \mathbb{R}^*$ with symbol $a(g, …
We prove a quantitative bi-Lipschitz nonembedding theorem for the Heisenberg group with its Carnot-Carathéodory metric and apply it to give a lower bound on the integrality gap of the Goemans-Linial semidefinite relaxation of the Sparsest Cut problem.
As a generalization of the Fourier transform, the fractional Fourier transform was introduced and has been further investigated both in theory and in applications of signal processing. We obtain a sampling theorem on shift-invariant spaces associated with the fractional Fourier transform domain. The resulting sampling theorem extends not only the classical Whittaker-Shannon-Kotelnikov sampling theorem associated with the fractional Fourier transform domain, but also extends the prior sampling theorems on shift-invariant spaces.
In this work we establish a sampling theorem for functions in Besov spaces on spaces of homogeneous type as defined in [HY] in the spirit of their recent counterpart for R d established by Jaming-Malinnikova in [JM]. The main tool is the wavelet decomposition presented by Deng-Han in [DH].
Sampling and reconstruction of functions is a central tool in science. A key result is given by the sampling theorem for bandlimited functions attributed to Whittaker, Shannon, Nyquist, and Kotelnikov. We develop an analogous sampling theory for operators which we call bandlimited if their Kohn-Nirenberg symbols are bandlimited. We prove sampling theorems for such operators and show that they are extensions of the classical sampling theorem.
We introduce novel equations, in the spirit of rough path theory, that parametrize level sets of intrinsically regular maps on the Heisenberg group with values in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These equations can be seen as a sub-Riemannian counterpart to classical ODEs arising from the implicit function theorem. We show that they enjoy all the natural well-posedness properties, thus allowing for a "good calculus" on nonsmooth level sets. We apply these results to prove an area formula for the intrinsic measure of level sets, along with the corresponding coarea formula.
