Given a homomorphism of commutative noetherian rings $ϕ: R \to S$, Daniel Quillen conjectured in 1970 that if the Andre-Quillen homology functors $D_n(S|R,-)$ vanish for all $n \gg 0$, then they vanish for all $n \ge 3$. We prove the conjecture under the additional hypothesis that there exists a homomorphism of rings $ψ: S \to R$ such that $ϕ\circψ=\id_S$. More precisely, in this case we show that $ψ$ is complete intersection at $ϕ^{-1}(\fn)$ for every prime ideal $\fn$ of $S$. Using these results, we describe all algebra retracts $S\to R\to S$ for which the $S$-algebra $Tor^R(S,S)$ is finitel…
We develop a simple theory of André-Quillen cohomology for commutative differential graded algebras over a field of characteristic zero. We then relate it to the homotopy groups of function spaces and spaces of homotopy self-equivalences of rational nilpotent $CW$-complexes. This puts certain results of Sullivan in a more conceptual framework.
We study the André-Quillen cohomology with coefficients of an algebra over an operad. Using resolutions of algebras coming from Koszul duality theory, we make this cohomology theory explicit and we give a Lie theoretic interpretation. For which operads is the associated André-Quillen cohomology equal to an Ext-functor ? We give several criterion, based on the cotangent complex, to characterize this property. We apply it to homotopy algebras, which gives a new homotopy stable property for algebras over cofibrant operads.
Cuntz and Quillen have shown that for algebras over a field $k$ with $char(k)=0$, periodic cyclic homology may be regarded, in some sense, as the derived functor of (non-commutative) de Rham (co-)homology. The purpose of this paper is to formalize this derived functor analogy. We show that the localization ${Def}^{-1}\Cal{PA}$ of the category $\Cal{PA}$ of countable pro-algebras at the class of (infinitesimal) deformations exists (in any characteristic) (Theorem 3.2) and that, in characteristic zero, periodic cyclic homology is the derived functor of de Rham cohomology with respect to this loc…
Topological André-Quillen homology for commutative $S$-algebras was introduced by Basterra following work of Kriz, and has been intensively studied by several authors. In this paper we discuss it as a homology theory on CW $S$-algebras and apply it to obtain results on minimal atomic $p$-local $S$-algebras which generalise those of Baker and May for $p$-local spectra and simply connected spaces. We exhibit some new examples of minimal atomic $S$-algebras.
Let K(n) be the nth Morava K--theory at a prime p. This paper is a thorough study of questions like the following: to what extent does the K(n)--localization, or the K(n)--homology, of a spectrum X determine the K(n)--homology of its 0th space X_0? Our methods combine techniques from modern homotopical algebra with chromatic homotopy. In particular, we use the telescopic functors of Bousfield and the author (dependent on the Nilpotence Theorem of Devanitz, Hopkins, and Smith), as wel as Topological Andre--Quillen Homology and Goodwillie calculus in nonconnective settings.
We define, for a somewhat standard forgetful functor from nonsymmetric operads to weight graded associative algebras, two functorial "enveloping operad" functors, the right inverse and the left adjoint of the forgetful functor. Those functors turn out to be related by operadic Koszul duality, and that relationship can be utilised to provide examples showing limitations of two standard tools of the Koszul duality theory. We also apply these functors to get a homotopical algebra proof of the Lagrange inversion formula.

We lift to equivariant algebra three closely related classical algebraic concepts: abelian group objects in augmented commutative algebras, derivations, and Kähler differentials. We define Mackey functor objects in the category of Tambara functors augmented to a fixed Tambara functor $\underline{R}$, and we show that the usual square-zero extension gives an equivalence of categories between these Mackey functor objects and ordinary modules over $\underline{R}$. We then describe the natural generalization to Tambara functors of a derivation, building on the intuition that a Tambara functor has …
We construct a new Quillen model, based on the notions of Drinfeld's DG quotient and localization pair, for the Morita homotopy theory of DG categories. This new Quillen model carries a natural closed symmetric monoidal structure and allows us to re-interpret Toen's construction of the internal Hom-functor for the homotopy category of DG categories as a total right derived internal Hom-functor.

The aim of this work is to clarify the relationship between homology theory of commutative monoids constructed 'a la Quillen and technology of Gamma-modules.
Owing to the difference in $K$-theory, an example by Dugger and Shipley implies that the equivalence of stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules should not be a Quillen equivalence. We give a sufficient and necessary condition for the Frobenius pair of faithful functors between two abelian categories to be a Quillen equivalence, which is also equivalent to that the Frobenius functors induce mutually inverse equivalences between stable categories of Gorenstein projective objects. We show that the category of Gorenstein projective objects is a Waldhausen category, then Gorenstein $K$-g…
We construct spectral sequences in the framework of Baues-Wirsching cohomology and homology for functors between small categories and analyze particular cases including Grothendieck fibrations. We also give applications to more classical cohomology and homology theories including Hochschild-Mitchell cohomology and those studied before by Watts, Roos, Quillen and others.
In this paper we introduce a derivability criterion of functors based on the existence of adjunctions rather than on the existence of resolutions. It constitutes a converse of Quillen-Maltsiniotis Derived Adjunction Theorem. We present two consequences of our derivability criterion. On the one hand, we prove that the two notions for homotopy colimits corresponding to Grothendieck derivators and Quillen model categories are equivalent. On the other hand, we deduce that the internal hom for derived Morita theory constructed by B. Toen is indeed the right derived functor of the internal hom of dg…
We survey the basics of homological algebra in exact categories in the sense of Quillen. All diagram lemmas are proved directly from the axioms, notably the five lemma, the 3 x 3-lemma and the snake lemma. We briefly discuss exact functors, idempotent completion and weak idempotent completeness. We then show that it is possible to construct the derived category of an exact category without any embedding into abelian categories and we sketch Deligne's approach to derived functors. The construction of classical derived functors with values in an abelian category painlessly translates to exact ca…
Quillen introduced a new $K'_0$-theory of nonunital rings and showed that, under some assumptions (weaker than the existence of unity), this new theory agrees with the usual algebraic $K^{alg}_0$-theory. For a field $k$ of characteristic $0$, we introduce higher nonunital $K$-theory of $k$-algebras, denoted $KQ$, which extends Quillen's original definition of the $K'_0$ functor. We show that the $KQ$-theory is Morita invariant and satisfies excision connectively, in a suitable sense, on the category of idempotent $k$-algebras. Using these two properties we show that the $KQ$-theory agrees with…
With the help of the tools of Quillen's homotopical algebra, we construct `the universal additive invariant', namely a functor from the category of small dg categories to an additive category, that inverts the Morita dg functors, transforms the semi-orthogonal decompositions in the sense of Bondal-Orlov into direct sums and which is universal for these properties. We compare our construction with that of Bondal-Larsen-Lunts. ----- A l'aide des outils de l'algebre homotopique de Quillen, on construit `l'invariant additif universel', c'est-a-dire un foncteur defini sur la categorie des petites d…
In this paper we construct a symmetric monoidal closed model category of coherently commutative monoidal categories. The main aim of this paper is to establish a Quillen equivalence between a model category of coherently commutative monoidal categories and a natural model category of Permutative (or strict symmetric monoidal) categories, $\mathbf{Perm}$, which is not a symmetric monoidal closed model category. The right adjoint of this Quillen equivalence is the classical Segal's Nerve functor.
Classical definitions of locally complete intersection (l.c.i.) homomorphisms of commutative rings are limited to maps that are essentially of finite type, or flat. The concept introduced in this paper is meaningful for homomorphisms phi : R \longrightarrow S of commutative noetherian rings. It is defined in terms of the structure of phi in a formal neighborhood of each point of Spec S. We characterize the l.c.i. property by different conditions on the vanishing of the André-Quillen homology of the R-algebra S. One of these descriptions establishes a very general form of a conjecture of Quille…
We study pro excision in algebraic K-theory, following Suslin--Wodzicki, Cuntz--Quillen, Cortiñas, and Geisser--Hesselholt, as well as Artin--Rees and continuity properties of André--Quillen, Hochschild, and cyclic homology. Our key tool is to first establish the equivalence of various pro Tor vanishing conditions which appear in the literature. Using this we prove that all ideals of commutative, Noetherian rings are pro unital in a certain sense, and show that such ideals satisfy pro excision in $K$-theory as well as in cyclic and topological cyclic homology. In addition, our techniques yield…
For commutative algebras there are three important homology theories, Harrison homology, Andre-Quillen homology and Gamma-homology. In general these differ, unless one works with respect to a ground field of characteristic zero. We show that the analogues of these homology theories agree in the category of pointed commutative monoids in symmetric sequences and that Hochschild homology always possesses a Hodge decomposition in this setting. In addition we prove that the category of pointed differential graded commutative monoids in symmetric sequences has a model structure and that it is Quille…
An important example of a model category is the category of unbounded chain complexes of R-modules, which has as its homotopy category the derived category of the ring R. This example shows that traditional homological algebra is encompassed by Quillen's homotopical algebra. The goal of this paper is to show that more general forms of homological algebra also fit into Quillen's framework. Specifically, a projective class on a complete and cocomplete abelian category A is exactly the information needed to do homological algebra in A. The main result is that, under weak hypotheses, the category …
In a previous paper I gave a presentation for the Quillen higher algebraic K-groups of an exact category in terms of "acyclic binary multicomplexes". In this paper I take that presentation as a definition of the higher K-groups, generalize it to the relative K-groups of an exact functor between exact categories, and produce the corresponding long exact sequence by elementary means, without homotopy theory.

Let $h$ be a connective homology theory. We construct a functorial relative plus construction as a Bousfield localization functor in the category of maps of spaces. It allows us to associate to a pair $(X, H)$ consisting of a connected space $X$ and an $h$-perfect normal subgroup $H$ of the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ an $h$-acyclic map $X \rightarrow X^{+h}_H$ inducing the quotient by $H$ on the fundamental group. When $h$ is an ordinary homology theory with coefficients in a commutative ring with unit $R$, this provides a functorial and well-defined counterpart to a construction by cell attac…
