We conjecture that appropriate K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of complex flag manifolds G/B are governed by finite-difference versions of Toda systems constructed in terms of the Langlands-dual quantized universal enveloping algebras U_q(g'). The conjecture is proved in the case of classical flag manifolds of the series A. The proof is based on a refinement of the famous Atiyah-Hirzebruch argument for rigidity of arithmetical genus applied to hyperquot-scheme compactifications of spaces of rational curves in the flag manifolds.
We prove the Givental conjecture that the (equivariant) quantum cohomology of flag manifolds G/B are governed by the conservation law of Toda lattices. In addition, we find the quantum differential module structure of the flag manifolds.
We discuss relations of Vafa's quantum cohomology with Floer's homology theory, introduce equivariant quantum cohomology, formulate some conjectures about its general properties and, on the basis of these conjectures, compute quantum cohomology algebras of the flag manifolds. The answer turns out to coincide with the algebra of regular functions on an invariant lagrangian variety of a Toda lattice.
We first describe the tangent space to the affine flag manifold associated to a simple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$ at the distinguished point starting from standard definitions. We then construct projective lines in the affine flag manifold tangent to given root vectors associated to imaginary roots of the corresponding affine Kac-Moody algebra and describe in which Schubert varieties they lie.
Using Ram's theory of alcove walks, we give a proof of the Bernstein presentation of the affine Hecke algebra. The method works also in the case of unequal parameters. We also discuss how these results help in studying sheaves of nearby cycles on affine flag manifolds.
We study some geometric and combinatorial aspects of the solution to the full Kostant-Toda (f-KT) hierarchy, when the initial data is given by an arbitrary point on the totally non-negative (tnn) flag variety of SL_n(R). The f-KT flows on the tnn flag variety are complete, and their asymptotics are completely determined by the cell decomposition of the tnn flag variety given by Rietsch. We define the f-KT flow on the weight space via the moment map, and show that the closure of each f-KT flow forms an interesting convex polytope generalizing the permutohedron which we call a Bruhat interval po…
It is known that the closure of an arbitrary K_c-orbit on a flag manifold is expressed as a product of a closed K_c-orbit and a Schubert cell ([M2], [Sp]). We already applied this fact to the duality of orbits on flag manifolds ([GM]). We refine here this result and and give its new applications to the study of domains arising from the duality.
We study certain nearby cycles sheaves on an affine flag manifold which arise naturally in the Beilinson-Gaitsgory deformation of the affine flag manifold to the affine Grassmannian. We study the multiplicity functions we introduced in an earlier paper, which encode the data of the Jordan-Hoelder series. We prove the multiplicity functions are polynomials in q, and we give a sharp bound for their degrees. Our results apply as well to the nearby cycles in the p-adic deformation of Laumon-Haines-Ngo, and also to Wakimoto sheaves.
We explain that the Plücker relations provide the defining equations of the thick flag manifold associated to a Kac-Moody algebra. This naturally transplant the result of Kumar-Mathieu-Schwede about the Frobenius splitting of thin flag manifolds to the thick case. As a consequence, we provide a description of the global sections of line bundles of a thick Schubert variety as conjectured in Kashiwara-Shimozono [Duke Math. J. 148 (2009)]. This also yields the existence of a compatible basis of thick Demazure modules, and the projective normality of the thick Schubert varieties.
This paper studies affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine flag manifold of GL_2. At first we determine all such varieties up to isomorphy. After this we investigate the representations of the sigma-stabilizer of an element b of the group on the etale cohomology of the affine Deligne-Lusztig variety X_w(b). We describe such representations as inductions from compact subgroups and in terms of noncuspidal representations.
In this paper, we develop the theory of flag manifold over a semifield for any Kac-Moody root datum. We show that the flag manifold over a semifield admits a natural action of the monoid over that semifield associated with the Kac-Moody datum and admits a cellular decomposition. This extends the previous work of Lusztig, Postnikov, Rietsch and others on the totally nonnegative flag manifolds (of finite type) and the work of Lusztig, Speyer, Williams on the tropical flag manifolds (of finite type). As a by-product, we prove a conjecture of Lusztig on the duality of totally nonnegative flag mani…
We obtain A- and B- series of flag manifolds for T-equivariant tangent bundles and equivariant Chern polynomial following the arguments of Lian, Liu, Yau.
We define the odd symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds, which are smooth projective varieties equipped with an action of the odd symplectic group and generalizing the usual symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds. Contrary to the latter, which are the flag manifolds of the symplectic group, the varieties we introduce are not homogeneous. We argue nevertheless that in many respects the odd symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds behave like homogeneous varieties; in support of this claim, we compute the automorphism group of the odd symplectic grassmannians, and we prove a Borel-…
By using Oprea's Bialynicki-Birula decomposition for the stack of genus zero stable maps to flag manifolds. We calculate the Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space in degree one and degree two.
We found an explicit description of all $GL(n,\RR)$-Whittaker functions as oscillatory integrals and thus constructed equivariant mirrors of flag manifolds. As a consequence we proved the Virasoro conjecture for flag manifolds.
The Shapiro conjecture in the real Schubert calculus fails to hold for flag manifolds, but in a very interesting way. In this extended abstract, we give a refinement of that conjecture for the flag manifold and present massive experimentation (over 12 GigaHertz-Years) that supports our refined conjecture. We also establish relationships between different cases of the conjecture and describe some new phenomena uncovered in this experimentation.
We give a combinatorial Chevalley formula for an arbitrary weight, in the torus-equivariant K-theory of semi-infinite flag manifolds, which is expressed in terms of the quantum alcove model. As an application, we prove the Chevalley formula for anti-dominant fundamental weights in the (small) torus-equivariant quantum K-theory of the flag manifold G/B; this has been a longstanding conjecture about the multiplicative structure of the mentioned quantum K-theory. Moreover, in type A, we prove that the so-called quantum Grothendieck polynomials indeed represent Schubert classes in the (non-equivar…
As a natural extension of the theory of uniform vector bundles on Fano manifolds, we consider uniform principal bundles, and study them by means of the associated flag bundles, as their natural projective geometric realizations. In this paper we develop the necessary background, and prove some theorems that are flag bundle counterparts of some of the central results in the theory of uniform vector bundles.
We develop a theory of perverse sheaves on the semi-infinite flag manifold $G((t))/N((t))\cdot T[[t]]$, and show that the subcategory of Iwahori-monodromy perverse sheaves is equivalent to the regular block of the category of representations of the small quantum group at an even root of unity.
As an application of a recent characterization of complete flag manifolds as Fano manifolds having only ${\mathbb P}^1$-bundles as elementary contractions, we consider here the case of a Fano manifold $X$ of Picard number one supporting an unsplit family of rational curves whose subfamilies parametrizing curves through a fixed point are rational homogeneous, and we prove that $X$ is homogeneous. In order to do this, we first study minimal sections on flag bundles over the projective line, and discuss how Grothendieck's theorem on principal bundles allows us to describe a flag bundle upon some …
We continue the study, begun in [Kouno-Naito-Orr-Sagaki, 2021], of inverse Chevalley formulas for the equivariant $K$-group of semi-infinite flag manifolds. Using the language of alcove paths, we reformulate and extend our combinatorial inverse Chevalley formula to arbitrary weights in all simply-laced types (conjecturally also for $E_8$).
The (small) quantum cohomology ring of a flag manifold F encodes enumerative geometry of rational curves on F. We give a proof of the presentation of the ring and of a quantum Giambelli formula, which is more direct and geometric than the previously known proof. Furthermore, this proof gives a relationship between quantum Schubert polynomials and universal Schubert polynomials, which arise in a degeneracy locus formula of Fulton.
The present paper provides a geometric characterization of complete flag varieties for semisimple algebraic groups. Namely, if $X$ is a Fano manifold whose all elementary contractions are $\mathbb P^1$-fibrations then $X$ is isomorphic to the complete flag manifold $G/B$ where $G$ is a semi-simple Lie algebraic group and $B$ is a Borel subgroup of $G$.
We give elementary geometric proofs of the main theorems about the (small) quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties SL(n)/P, including the quantum Pieri and quantum Giambelli formulas and the presentation.
Why withdrawn: Main theorem can only be proved, if the flag manifold F with b2=1 is additionally hermitian symmetric.Mistake made at the following place: If F is not hermitian symmetric, certain vector fields are not left invariant
A new proof of the assertion, that any global kaehler deformation of a flag manifold F with b2=1 is biholomorphic to F. Essential use is made of rational connected properties of F
We use geometry to give a short proof of an equivariant Pieri rule in the classical flag manifold. This rule is due to Robinson, who gave an algebraic proof.
The Shapiro conjecture in the real Schubert calculus, while likely true for Grassmannians, fails to hold for flag manifolds, but in a very interesting way. We give a refinement of the Shapiro conjecture for the flag manifold and present massive (15.76 gigahertz-years) computational experimentation in support of this refined conjecture. We also prove the conjecture in some special cases using discriminants and establish relationships between different cases of the conjecture.
In this article the generic torus orbit closure in a flag Bott manifold is shown to be a non-singular toric variety, and its fan structure is explicitly calculated.
We compute the quantum cohomology of symplectic flag manifolds. Symplectic flag manifolds can be described by non-abelian GLSMs with superpotential. Although the ring relations cannot be directly read off from the equations of motion on the Coulomb branch due to complication introduced by the non-abelian gauge symmetry, it can be shown that they can be extracted from the localization formula in a gauge-invariant form. Our result is general for all symplectic flag manifolds, which reduces to previously established results on symplectic Grassmannians and complete symplectic flag manifolds derive…
We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for certain structure constants of the T-equivariant cohomology of the flag manifold SLn/B. Our result generalizes the Pieri-type formula in ordinary cohomology proved by Sottile in 1996. Our result also gives a Pieri-type formula for the double Schubert polynomials introduced by Lascoux and Schutzenberger.
We give an algorithm to compute the integer cohomology groups of any real partial flag manifold, by computing the incidence coefficients of the Schubert cells. For even flag manifolds we determine the integer cohomology groups, by proving that any torsion class has order 2 (generalizing a result of Ehresmann). We conjecture this to hold for any real flag manifold. We obtain results concerning which Schubert varieties represent integer cohomology classes, their structure constants and how to express them in terms of characteristic classes. For even flag manifolds and Grassmannians we also descr…
We discuss a relationship between Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds, Fomin-Kirillov algebra, and the generalized nil-Hecke algebra. We show that nonnegativity conjecture in Fomin-Kirillov algebra implies the nonnegativity of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds for type A. Motivated by this connection, we also prove that the (equivariant) Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds are certain summations of the structure constants of the equivariant cohomology of the Bott-Samelson varieties. W…
We study the equivariant K-group of the affine flag manifold with respect to the Borel group action. We prove that the structure sheaf of the (infinite-dimensional) Schubert variety in the K-group is represented by a unique polynomial, which we call the affine Grothendieck polynomial.
We compute the quantum cohomology rings of the partial flag manifolds F_{n_1\cdots n_k}=U(n)/(U(n_1)\times \cdots \times U(n_k)). The inductive computation uses the idea of Givental and Kim. Also we define a notion of the vertical quantum cohomology ring of the algebraic bundle. For the flag bundle F_{n_1\cdots n_k}(E) associated with the vector bundle E this ring is found.
We give a simplification of Belkale's geometric proof of the Horn conjecture. Our approach uses the geometry of two-step flag manifolds to explain the occurrence of the Horn inequalities in a very straightforward way. The arguments for both necessity and sufficiency of the Horn inequalities are fairly conceptual when viewed in this framework. We provide examples to illustrate the method of proof.
Consider the generalized flag manifold $G/B$ and the corresponding affine flag manifold $\mathcal{Fl}_G$. In this paper we use curve neighborhoods for Schubert varieties in $\mathcal{Fl}_G$ to construct certain affine Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathcal{Fl}_G$, and to obtain a family of "affine quantum Chevalley" operators $Λ_0, \ldots, Λ_n$ indexed by the simple roots in the affine root system of $G$. These operators act on the cohomology ring $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[q_0, \ldots,q_n]$. By analyzing commutativity and invariance properties of these oper…
The classical Schubert cells on a flag manifold G/H give a cell decomposition for G/H whose Kronecker duals (known as Schubert classes) form an additive base for the integral cohomology H^{\ast}(G/H). We present a formula that expresses Steenrod mod-p operations on Schubert classes in G/H in terms of Cartan numbers of G.
Explicit combinatorial cancellation-free rules are given for the product of an equivariant line bundle class with a Schubert class in the torus-equivariant K-theory of a Kac-Moody flag manifold. The weight of the line bundle may be dominant or antidominant, and the coefficients may be described either by Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths or by the alcove model of the first author and Postnikov. For Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths, our formulas are the Kac-Moody generalizations of results of Griffeth-Ram and Pittie-Ram for finite dimensional flag manifolds. A gap in the proofs of the mentioned results is add…
This is an exposition of some recent developments related to the object in the title, particularly the combinatorial computation of the (genus 0) Gromov-Witten invariants of the flag manifold and the quadratic algebra approach. The notes are largely based on my joint papers with S.Gelfand, A.N.Kirillov, and A.Postnikov. This is by no means an exhaustive survey of the subject, but rather a casual introduction to its combinatorial aspects.
Hilbert's 15th problem called for a rigorous foundation of Schubert's calculus, in which a long standing and challenging part is Schubert's problem of characteristics. In the course of securing the foundation of algebraic geometry, Van der Waerden and André Weil attributed the problem to the determination of the intersection theory of flag manifolds. This article surveys the background, content, and resolution of the problem of characteristics. Our main results are a unified formula for the characteristics, and a system description for the intersection rings of flag manifolds. We illustrate th…
