Given an aleph_1-free abelian group G we characterize the class C_G of all torsion abelian groups T satisfying Ext(G,T)=0 assuming the continuum hypothesis CH. Moreover, in Godel's constructable universe we prove that this characterizes C_G for arbitrary torsion-free abelian G. It follows that there exist some ugly aleph_1-free abelian groups.
An abelian group is said to be aleph_1-free if all its countable subgroups are free. Our main result is: If R is a ring with R^+ free and |R|<lambda <= 2^{aleph_0}, then there exists an aleph_1-free abelian group G of cardinality lambda with End(G)=R . A corollary to this theorem is: Indecomposable aleph_1-free abelian groups of cardinality aleph_1 do exist.
We show that there is a countable universal abelian p-group for purity, i.e., a countable abelian p-group $U$ such that every countable abelian p-group purely embeds in $U$. This is the last result needed to provide a complete solution to Problem 5.1 of [Fuc15] below $\aleph_ω$. We introduce $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous p-groups, show that there is a universal abelian p-group for purity which is $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous, and completely characterize the countable $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous p-groups.
We begin with the existence of groups with trivial duals for cardinals aleph_n (n in omega). Then we derive results about strongly aleph_n-free abelian groups of cardinality aleph_n (n in omega) with prescribed free, countable endomorphism ring. Finally we use combinatorial results of [Sh:108], [Sh:141] to give similar answers for cardinals >aleph_omega. As in Magidor and Shelah [MgSh:204], a paper concerned with the existence of kappa-free, non-free abelian groups of cardinality kappa, the induction argument breaks down at aleph_omega. Recall that aleph_omega is the first singular cardinal an…
For any natural n, we construct an aleph_n-free abelian groups which have few homomorphisms to Z . For this we use ``aleph_n-free (n+1)-dimensional black boxes''. The method is relevant to e.g. construction of aleph_n-free abelian groups with a prescribed endomorphism ring.
$\aleph_1$-free groups, abelian groups for which every countable subgroup is free, exhibit a number of interesting algebraic and set-theoretic properties. In this paper, we give a complete proof that the property of being $\aleph_1$-free is absolute; that is, if an abelian group $G$ is $\aleph_1$-free in some transitive model $\textbf{M}$ of ZFC, then it is $\aleph_1$-free in any transitive model of ZFC containing $G$. The absoluteness of $\aleph_1$-freeness has the following remarkable consequence: an abelian group $G$ is $\aleph_1$-free in some transitive model of ZFC if and only if it is (c…
We show that it is consistent with ordinary set theory ZFC and the generalized continuum hypothesis that there exist two separable abelian groups of cardinality aleph_1 which are filtration equivalent and one is a Whitehead group but the other is not. This solves one of the open problems of Eklof and Mekler.
We prove that if mu^+< lambda =cf(lambda)< mu^{aleph_0}, then there is no universal reduced torsion free abelian group. Similarly if aleph_0< lambda < 2^{aleph_0}. We also prove that if 2^{aleph_0}< mu^+< lambda =cf(lambda)< mu^{aleph_0}, then there is no universal reduced separable abelian p-group in lambda. (Note: both results fail if lambda = lambda^{aleph_0} or if lambda is strong limit, cf (mu)= aleph_0< mu).
Problem 5.1 in page 181 of [Fuc15] asks to find the cardinals $λ$ such that there is a universal abelian $p$-group for purity of cardinality $λ$, i.e., an abelian $p$-group $U_λ$ of cardinality $λ$ such that every abelian $p$-group of cardinality $\leq λ$ purely embeds in $U_λ$. In this paper we use ideas from the theory of abstract elementary classes to show: $\textbf{Theorem.}$ Let $p$ be a prime number. If $λ^{\aleph_0}=λ$ or $\forall μ< λ( μ^{\aleph_0} < λ)$, then there is a universal abelian $p$-group for purity of cardinality $λ$. Moreover for $n\geq 2$, there is a universal abelian $p$-…
It is well known that the lattice Idc G of all principal {\ell}-ideals of any Abelian {\ell}-group G is a completely normal distributive 0-lattice, and that not every completely normal distributive 0-lattice is a homomorphic image of some Idc G, via a counterexample of cardinality $\aleph 2. We prove that every completely normal distributive 0-lattice with at most $\aleph 1 elements is a homomorphic image of some Idc G. By Stone duality, this means that every completely normal generalized spectral space, with at most $\aleph 1 compact open sets, is homeomorphic to a spectral subspace of the {\…
We prove in ZFC that an abelian group $C$ is cotorsion if and only if $\operatorname{Ext}(F,C) = 0$ for every $\aleph_k$-free group $F$, and discuss some consequences and related results. This short note includes a condensed overview of the $\barλ$-Black Box for $\aleph_k$-free constructions in ZFC.
We like to build Abelian groups (or R-modules) which on the one hand are quite free, say $\aleph_{ω+ 1}$-free, and on the other hand, are complicated in suitable sense. We choose as our test problem having no non-trivial homomorphism to $Z$ (known classically for $\aleph_1$-free, recently for $\aleph_n$-free). We succeed to prove the existence of even $\aleph_{ω_1 \cdot n}-$free ones. This requires building n-dimensional black boxes, which are quite free. Thus combinatorics is of self interest and we believe will be useful also for other purposes. On the other hand, modulo suitable large cardi…
We answer a long-standing open question by proving in ordinary set theory, ZFC, that the Kaplansky test problems have negative answers for aleph_1-separable abelian groups of cardinality aleph_1. In fact, there is an aleph_1-separable abelian group M such that M is isomorphic to M oplus M oplus M but not to M oplus M .
A characteristic result is that if 2^{aleph_0}< mu < mu^+< lambda = cf(lambda)< mu^{aleph_0}, then among the separable reduced p-groups of cardinality lambda which are (< lambda)-stable there is no universal one.
We examine the existence of universal elements in classes of infinite abelian groups. The main method is using group invariants which are defined relative to club guessing sequences. We prove, for example: Theorem: For $n\ge 2$, there is a purely universal separable $p$-group in $\aleph_n$ if, and only if, $\cont\le \aleph_n$.
In this short note we show that if lambda>aleph_1 is regular and lambda is not the successor of a singular cardinal of cofinality aleph_0, and G is a lambda-free abelian group of size lambda, then there is a free group G' subseteq G of size lambda.
section 2: We answer a question of Mekler Eklof on the closure operations of the incompactness spectrum. We answer a question of Foreman and Magidor on reflection of stationary subsets of S_{< aleph_2}(lambda) = {a subseteq lambda : |a| < aleph_2}]. section 3 - NPT is not transitive. We prove NPT(lambda, mu) + NPT(mu, kappa) not => NPT(lambda, kappa)
We investigate the Whiteheadness of Borel abelian groups (aleph_1-free, wlog, as otherwise this is trivial). We show that CH (and even WCH) implies any such abelian group is free, and always aleph_2-free.
An E-ring is a unital ring R such that every endomorphism of the underlying abelian group R^+ is multiplication by some ring-element. The existence of almost-free E-rings of cardinality greater than 2^{aleph_0} is undecidable in ZFC. While they exist in Goedel's universe, they do not exist in other models of set theory. For a regular cardinal aleph_1 <= lambda <= 2^{aleph_0} we construct E-rings of cardinality lambda in ZFC which have aleph_1-free additive structure. For lambda = aleph_1 we therefore obtain the existence of almost-free E-rings of cardinality aleph_1 in ZFC.
We show that any non abelian free group $\F$ is strongly $\aleph_0$-homogeneous, i.e. that finite tuples of elements which satisfy the same first-order properties are in the same orbit under $\Aut(\F)$. We give a characterization of elements in finitely generated groups which have the same first-order properties as a primitive element of the free group. We deduce as a consequence that most hyperbolic surface groups are not $\aleph_0$-homogeneous.
We deal with some pcf investigations mostly motivated by abelian group theory problems and deal their applications to test problems (we expect reasonably wide applications). We prove almost always the existence of aleph_omega-free abelian groups with trivial dual, i.e. no non-trivial homomorphisms to the integers. This relies on investigation of pcf; more specifically, for this we prove that "almost always" there are F subseteq lambda^kappa which are quite free and has black boxes. The "almost always" means that there are strong restrictions on cardinal arithmetic if the universe fails this, t…
In answer to a question of A. Blass, J. Irwin and G. Schlitt, a subgroup G of the additive group Z^ω is constructed whose dual, Hom(G,Z), is free abelian of rank 2^{\aleph_0}. The question of whether Z^ω has subgroups whose duals are free of still larger rank is discussed, and some further classes of subgroups of Z^ω are noted.
We will answer a question raised by Emmanuel Dror Farjoun concerning the existence of torsion-free abelian groups G such that for any ordered pair of pure elements there is a unique automorphism mapping the first element onto the second one. We will show the existence of such a group of cardinality lambda for any successor cardinal lambda=mu^+ with mu=mu^{aleph_0}.
We study limit models in the class of abelian groups with the subgroup relation and in the class of torsion-free abelian groups with the pure subgroup relation. We show: $\textbf{Theorem}$ (1) If $G$ is a limit model of cardinality $λ$ in the class of abelian groups with the subgroup relation, then $G \cong (\oplus_λ\mathbb{Q}) \oplus \oplus_{p \text{ prime}} (\oplus_λ \mathbb{Z}(p^\infty))$. (2) If $G$ is a limit model of cardinality $λ$ in the class of torsion-free abelian groups with the pure subgroup relation, then: * If the length of the chain has uncountable cofinality, then $ G \cong (\…
In "Almost Free Modules, Set-theoretic Methods", Eklof and Mekler raised the question about the existence of dual abelian groups G which are not isomorphic to Z+G. Recall that G is a dual group if G ~ D^* for some group D with D^*=Hom(D,Z). The existence of such groups is not obvious because dual groups are subgroups of cartesian products Z^D and therefore have very many homomorphisms into Z. If p is such a homomorphism arising from a projection of the cartesian product, then D^* ~ ker(p)+Z. In all `classical cases' of groups D of infinite rank it turns out that D^* ~ ker(p). Is this always th…
This paper opens and discusses the question originally due to Daniel Herden, who asked for which graph $(μ,R)$ we can find a family $\{\mathbb G_α: α< μ\}$ of abelian groups such that for each $α,β\inμ$: $$Ext(\mathbb G_α, \mathbb G_β) = 0 \Longleftrightarrow(α,β) \in R.$$ In this regard, we present four results. First, we give a connection to Quillen's small object argument which helps $Ext$ vanishes and uses to present useful criteria to the question. Suppose $λ= λ^{\aleph_0}$ and $μ= 2^λ$. We apply Jensen's diamond principle along with the criteria to present $λ$-free abelian groups represe…
The maximality of Abelian subgroups play a role in various parts of group theory. For example, Mycielski has extended a classical result of Lie groups and shown that a maximal Abelian subgroup of a compact connected group is connected and, furthermore, all the maximal Abelian subgroups are conjugate. For finite symmetric groups the question of the size of maximal Abelian subgroups has been examined by Burns and Goldsmith in 1989 and Winkler in 1993. We show that there is not much interest in generalizing this study to infinite symmetric groups; the cardinality of any maximal Abelian subgroup o…
Motivated by a problem in additive Ramsey theory, we extend Todorcevic's partitions of three-dimensional combinatorial cubes to handle additional three-dimensional objects. As a corollary, we get that if the continuum hypothesis fails, then for every Abelian group $G$ of size $\aleph_2$, there exists a coloring $c:G\rightarrow\mathbb Z$ such that for every uncountable $X\subseteq G$ and every integer $k$, there are three distinct elements $x,y,z$ of $X$ such that $c(x+y+z)=k$.
We construct a non-free but aleph_1-separable, torsion-free abelian group G with a pure free subgroup B such that all subgroups of G disjoint from B are free and such that G/B is divisible. This answers a question of Irwin and shows that a theorem of Blass and Irwin cannot be strengthened so as to give an exact analog for torsion-free groups of a result proved for p-groups by Benabdallah and Irwin.
Using the consistency of some large cardinals we produce a model of Set Theory in which the generalized continuum hypothesis holds and for some torsion-free abelian group G of cardinality aleph_{omega +1} and for some torsion group T, Bext^2(G,T) not =0 .
We show that if 2^{aleph_0} Cohen reals are added to the universe, then for every reduced non-free torsion-free abelian group A of cardinality less than the continuum, there is a prime p so that Ext_p(A, Z) not= 0. In particular if it is consistent that there is a supercompact cardinal, then it is consistent (even with weak CH) that every coseparable group is free. The use of some large cardinal hypothesis is needed.
We study (relative) K-Mittag-Leffler modules, with emphasis on the class K of absolutely pure modules. A final goal is to describe the K-Mittag-Leffler abelian groups as those that are, modulo their torsion part, aleph_1-free, Cor.6.12. Several more general results of independent interest are derived on the way. In particular, every flat K-Mittag-Leffler module (for K as before) is Mittag-Leffler, Thm.3.9. A question about the definable subcategories generated by the divisible modules and the torsion-free modules, resp., has been left open, Quest.4.6.
A compact topological space X is spectral if it is sober (i.e., every irreducible closed set is the closure of a unique singleton) and the compact open subsets of X form a basis of the topology of X, closed under finite intersections. Theorem. A topological space X is homeomorphic to the spectrum of some countable Abelian {\ell}-group with unit (resp., MV-algebra) iff X is spectral, has a countable basis of open sets, and for any points x and y in the closure of a singleton {z}, either x is in the closure of {y} or y is in the closure of {x}. We establish this result by proving that a countabl…
Let λbe a cardinal with λ=λ^{\aleph_0} and p be either 0 or a prime number. We show that there are fields K_0 and K_1 of cardinality λand characteristic p such that the automorphism group of K_0 is a free group of cardinality 2^λand the automorphism group of K_1 is a free abelian group of cardinality 2^λ. This partially answers a question from [8] and complements results from [15], [16] and [17]. The methods developed in the proof of the above statement also allow us to show that the above cardinal arithmetic assumption is consistently not necessary for the existence of such fields and that th…
