A notion of detectability for nonlinear systems is discussed. Within the framework of ``input to state stability'' (ISS), a dual notion of ``output to state stability'' (OSS), and a more complete detectability notion, ``input-output to state stability'' (IOSS) have appeared in the literature. This note addresses a variant of the IOSS property, using an integral norm to measure signals, as opposed to the standard supremum norm that appears in ISS theory.
We study exponential stability for a kind of neural networks having time-varying delay. By extending the auxiliary function-based integral inequality, a novel integral inequality is derived by using weighted orthogonal functions of which one is discontinuous. Then, the new inequality is applied to investigate the exponential stability of time-delay neural networks via Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) method. Numerical examples are given to verify the advantages of the proposed criterion.
We study the recently introduced notion of output-input stability, which is a robust variant of the minimum-phase property for general smooth nonlinear control systems. The subject of this paper is developing the theory of output-input stability in the multi-input, multi-output setting. We show that output-input stability can be viewed as a combination of two system properties, one related to detectability and the other to left-invertibility. For systems affine in controls, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for output-input stability, which relies on Hirschorn's nonlinear structu…
Motivated by the regulator theory and adaptive controls, several notions on output stability in the framework of input-to-state stability (iss) were introduced for finite-dimensional systems. It turned out that these output stability notions are intrinsically different, reflecting different manners of how state variables may affect the transient behavior of output variables. In this work, we consider these output stability properties for delay systems. Our main objective is to illustrate how the various notions are related for delay systems and to provide the Razumikhin criteria for the output…
Input-to-state stability (ISS) and $\mathcal{L}_2$-gain are well-known robust stability properties that continue to find wide application in the analysis and control of nonlinear dynamical systems and their interconnections. We investigate the relationship between ISS-type and $\mathcal{L}_2$-gain properties, demonstrating several qualitative equivalences between these two approaches. We subsequently present several new sufficient conditions for the stability of interconnected systems derived by exploiting these qualitative equivalences.
This work explores Lyapunov characterizations of the input-output-to-state stability (IOSS) property for nonlinear systems. The notion of IOSS is a natural generalization of the standard zero-detectability property used in the linear case. The main contribution of this work is to establish a complete equivalence between the input-output-to-state stability property and the existence of a certain type of smooth Lyapunov function. As corollaries, one shows the existence of ``norm-estimators'', and obtains characterizations of nonlinear detectability in terms of relative stability and of finite-en…
We consider the problem of zeroing an error output of a nonlinear discrete-time system in the presence of constant exogenous disturbances, subject to hard convex constraints on the input signal. The design specification is formulated as a variational inequality, and we adapt a forward-backward splitting algorithm to act as an integral controller which ensures that the input constraints are met at each time step. We establish a low-gain stability result for the closed-loop system when the plant is exponentially stable, generalizing previously known results for integral control of discrete-time …
The input/output stability of an interconnected system composed of an ordinary differential equation and a damped string equation is studied. Issued from the literature on time-delay systems, an exact stability result is firstly derived using pole locations. Then, based on the Small-Gain theorem and on the Quadratic Separation framework, some robust stability criteria are provided. The latter follows from a projection of the infinite dimensional state on an orthogonal basis of Legendre polynomials. Numerical examples comparing these results with the ones in the literature are proposed and a co…
Distributed consensus-based controllers for optimal secondary frequency regulation of microgrids and power systems have received substantial attention in recent years. This paper provides a Lyapunov-based proof that, under a time-scale separation, these control schemes are stabilizing for a wide class of nonlinear power system models, and under weak assumptions on (i) the objective functions used for resource allocation, and (ii) the graph topology describing communication between agents in the consensus protocol. The results are illustrated via simulation on a detailed test system.
This paper is devoted to the study of the expected-integral multifunctions given in the form \begin{equation*} \operatorname{E}_Φ(x):=\int_TΦ_t(x)dμ, \end{equation*} where $Φ\colon T\times\mathbb{R}^n \rightrightarrows \mathbb{R}^m$ is a set-valued mapping on a measure space $(T,\mathcal{A},μ)$. Such multifunctions appear in applications to stochastic programming, which require developing efficient calculus rules of generalized differentiation. Major calculus rules are developed in this paper for coderivatives of multifunctions $\operatorname{E}_Φ$ and second-order subdifferentials of the corr…
A general ISS-type small-gain result is presented. It specializes to a small-gain theorem for ISS operators, and it also recovers the classical statement for ISS systems in state-space form. In addition, we highlight applications to incrementally stable systems, detectable systems, and to interconnections of stable systems.
Direct Integral Pseudospectral and Integral Spectral Methods for Solving a Class of Infinite Horizon Optimal Output Feedback Control Problems Using Rational and Exponential Gegenbauer Polynomials
In previous work the notion of input to state stability (ISS) has been generalized to systems with outputs, yielding a number of useful concepts. When considering a system whose output is to be kept small (i.e. an error output), the notion of input to output stability (IOS) arises. Alternatively, when considering a system whose output is meant to provide information about the state (i.e. a measurement output), one arrives at the detectability notion of output to state stability (OSS). Combining these concepts, one may consider a system with two outputs, an error and a measurement. This leads n…
We study input-to-state stability of bilinear control systems with possibly unbounded control operators. Natural sufficient conditions for integral input-to-state stability are given. The obtained results are applied to a bilinearly controlled Fokker-Planck equation.
This paper deals with several related notions of output stability with respect to inputs. The inputs may be thought of as disturbances; when there are no inputs, one obtains generalizations of the classical concepts of partial stability. The main notion studied is called input to output stability (IOS), and it reduces to input to state stability (ISS) when the output equals the complete state. Several variants, which formalize in different manners the transient behavior, are introduced. The main results provide a comparison among these notions. A companion paper establishes necessary and suffi…
Relaxed conditions are given for stability of a feedback system consisting of an exponentially stable multi-input multi-output nonlinear plant and an integral controller. Roughly speaking, it is shown that if the composition of the plant equilibrium input-output map and the integral feedback gain is infinitesimally contracting, then the closed-loop system is exponentially stable if the integral gain is sufficiently low. The main result is illustrated with an application arising in frequency control of AC power systems. We demonstrate how the contraction condition can be checked computationally…
This paper continues the study of the integral input-to-state stability (IISS) property. It is shown that the IISS property is equivalent to one which arises from the consideration of mixed norms on states and inputs, as well as to the superposition of a ``bounded energy bounded state'' requirement and the global asymptotic stability of the unforced system. A semiglobal version of IISS is shown to imply the global version, though a counterexample shows that the analogous fact fails for input to state stability (ISS). The results in this note complete the basic theoretical picture regarding IIS…
In this paper we provide a complete link between dissipation theory and a celebrated result on stability analysis with integral quadratic constraints. This is achieved with a new stability characterization for feedback interconnections based on the notion of finite-horizon integral quadratic constraints with a terminal cost. As the main benefit, this opens up opportunities for guaranteeing constraints on the transient responses of trajectories in feedback loops within absolute stability theory. For parametric robustness, we show how to generate tight robustly invariant ellipsoids on the basis …
This paper presents necessary and sufficient characterizations of several notions of input to output stability. Similar Lyapunov characterizations have been found to play a key role in the analysis of the input to state stability property, and the results given here extend their validity to the case when the output, but not necessarily the entire internal state, is being regulated. The work is related to partial stability of differential equations (the particular case which arises when there are no external inputs).
For bilinear infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, we show the equivalence between uniform global asymptotic stability and integral input-to-state stability. We provide two proofs of this fact. One applies to general systems over Banach spaces. The other is restricted to Hilbert spaces, but is more constructive and results in an explicit form of iISS Lyapunov functions.
In this work characterizations of notions of output stability for uncertain time-varying systems described by retarded functional differential equations are provided. Particularly, characterizations by means of Lyapunov and Razumikhin functions of uniform and non-uniform in time Robust Global Asymptotic Output Stability and Input-to-Output Stability are given. The results of this work have been developed for systems with outputs in abstract normed linear spaces in order to allow outputs with no delay, with discrete or distributed delay or functional outputs with memory.
In this note, we present two general classes of integral inequalities motivated by their applications to infinite dimensional systems. The inequalities possess general structures in terms of weight functions and lower quadratic bounds. Many existing inequalities in the published literature, including those with free matrix variables, are the special cases of our inequalities. An relation on the lower bounds of the proposed inequalities is also established. For specific applications, our inequalities are applied to construct a Liapunov-Krasovskii functional for the stability analysis of a linea…
The notions of integral input-to-state stability (iISS) and input-to-state stability (ISS) have been effective in addressing nonlinearities globally without domain restrictions in analysis and design of control systems. In particular, they provide useful tools of module-based methods integrating characteristics of components. This paper applies the framework of module-based analysis to ordinary differential equations which deterministically describe dynamics of prevalence and the duration of epidemics. The objective is to express fundamental properties of models of infectious diseases and vacc…
In this paper the notions of non-uniform in time Robust Blobal Asymptotic Output Stability (RGAOS) and Input-to-Output Stability (IOS) for discrete-time systems are studied. Characterizations as well as links between these notions are provided. Particularly, it is shown that a discrete-time system with continuous dynamics satisfies the non-uniform in time IOS property if and only if the corresponding unforced system is non-uniformly in time RGAOS. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the Robust Output Feedback Stabilization (ROFS) problem are also given.
This note deals with Bounded-Input-Bounded-Output (BIBO) stability for semilinear infinite-dimensional dynamical systems allowing for boundary control and boundary observation. We give sufficient conditions that guarantee BIBO stability based on Lipschitz conditions with respect to interpolation spaces. Our results can be applied to guarantee feasibility of funnel control for coupled ODE-PDE systems, as shown by means of an example from chemical engineering.
In this paper, a class of abstract dynamical systems is considered which encompasses a wide range of nonlinear finite- and infinite-dimensional systems. We show that the existence of a non-coercive Lyapunov function without any further requirements on the flow of the forward complete system ensures an integral version of uniform global asymptotic stability. We prove that also the converse statement holds without any further requirements on regularity of the system. Furthermore, we give a characterization of uniform global asymptotic stability in terms of the integral stability properties and a…
The present paper provides a sufficient condition to ensure output finite-time and fixed-time stability. Comparing with analogous researches the proposed result is less restrictive and obtained for a wider class of systems. The presented output stability condition is used for adaptive control design, where the state vector of a plant is extended by adjustable control parameters.
This paper introduces and studies the notion of output-input stability, which represents a variant of the minimum-phase property for general smooth nonlinear control systems. The definition of output-input stability does not rely on a particular choice of coordinates in which the system takes a normal form or on the computation of zero dynamics. In the spirit of the ``input-to-state stability'' philosophy, it requires the state and the input of the system to be bounded by a suitable function of the output and derivatives of the output, modulo a decaying term depending on initial conditions. Th…
The ergodicity and the output-controllability of stochastic reaction networks have been shown to be essential properties to fulfill to enable their control using, for instance, antithetic integral control. We propose here to extend those properties to the case of uncertain networks. To this aim, the notions of interval, robust, sign, and structural ergodicity/output-controllability are introduced. The obtained results lie in the same spirit as those obtained in [Briat, Gupta & Khammash, Cell Systems, 2016] where those properties are characterized in terms of control theoretic concepts, linear …
The Partial Integral Equation (PIE) framework was developed to computationally analyze linear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) where the PDE is first converted to a PIE and then the analysis problem is solved by solving operator-valued optimization problems. Previous works on the PIE framework focused on the analysis of PDEs with spatial derivatives up to $2^{nd}$-order. In this paper, we extend the class of PDEs by including integral terms and performing stability analysis using the PIE framework. More specifically, we show that PDEs with the integral terms where the integration is with …
For large classes of infinite-dimensional time-varying control systems, the equivalence between integral input-to-state stability (iISS) and the combination of global uniform asymptotic stability under zero input (0-GUAS) and uniformly bounded-energy input/bounded state (UBEBS) is established under a reasonable assumption of continuity of the trajectories with respect to the input, at the zero input. By particularizing to specific instances of infinite-dimensional systems, such as time-delay, or semilinear over Banach spaces, sufficient conditions are given in terms of the functions defining t…
We establish well-posedness results for non-autonomous semilinear input-output systems, the central assumption being the scattering-passivity of the considered semilinear system. We consider both systems with distributed control and observation and systems with boundary control and observation. Applications are given to nonlinearly controlled collocated systems and to nonlinearly controlled port-Hamiltonian systems.

Neural networks can be used as approximations of several complex control schemes such as model predictive control. We show in this paper which properties deep neural networks with rectifier linear units as activation functions need to satisfy to guarantee constraint satisfaction and asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. To do so, we introduce a parametric description of the neural network controller and use a mixed-integer linear programming formulation to perform output range analysis of neural networks. We also propose a novel method to modify a neural network controller such that …

This paper deals with strong versions of input-to-state stability and integral input-to-state stability of infinite-dimensional linear systems with an unbounded input operator. We show that infinite-time admissibility with respect to inputs in an Orlicz space is a sufficient condition for a system to be strongly integral input-to-state stable but, unlike in the case of exponentially stable systems, not a necessary one.
Asymptotic output stability (AOS) is an interesting property when addressing control applications in which not all state variables are requested to converge to the origin. AOS is often established by invoking classical tools such as Barbashin-Krasovskii-LaSalle's invariance principle or Barbalat's lemma. Nevertheless, none of these tools allow to predict whether the output convergence is uniform on bounded sets of initial conditions, which may lead to practical issues related to convergence speed and robustness. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we provide a testable sufficient…
This paper proposes a line integral Lyapunov function approach to stability analysis and stabilization for Itô stochastic T-S models. Unlike the deterministic case, stability analysis of this model needs the information of Hessian matrix of the line integral Lyapunov function which is related to partial derivatives of the basis functions. By introducing a new method to handle these partial derivatives and using the property of state-dependent matrix with rank one, the stability conditions of the underlying system can be established via a line integral Lyapunov function. These conditions obtain…
