This paper proposes a framework to assess the stability of an ordinary differential equation which is coupled to a 1D-partial differential equation (PDE). The stability theorem is based on a new result on Integral Quadratic Constraints (IQCs) and expressed in terms of two linear matrix inequalities with a moderate computational burden. The IQCs are not generated using dissipation inequalities involving the whole state of an infinite-dimensional system, but by using projection coefficients of the infinite-dimensional state. This permits to generalize our robustness result to many other PDEs. The proposed methodology is applied to a time-delay system and numerical results comparable to those in the literature are obtained.
We consider stochastic differential games with $N$ nearly identical players, linear-Gaussian dynamics, and infinite horizon discounted quadratic cost. Admissible controls are feedbacks for which the system is ergodic. We first study the existence of affine Nash equilibria by means of an associated system of $N$ Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman and $N$ Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck partial differential equations, proving that for small discount factors quadratic-Gaussian solutions exist and are unique. Then, we prove the convergence of such solutions to the unique quadratic-Gaussian solution of the pair of M…
This paper is concerned with a linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem with fixed terminal states and integral quadratic constraints. A Riccati equation with infinite terminal value is introduced, which is uniquely solvable and whose solution can be approximated by the solution for a suitable unconstrained LQ problem with penalized terminal state. Using results from duality theory, the optimal control is explicitly derived by solving the Riccati equation together with an optimal parameter selection problem. It turns out that the optimal control is not only a feedback of the cu…
This technical report is an accompaniment to the paper "Differentially Private LQ Control" that is currently under review. This technical report provides a complete derivation of the infinite horizon discrete-time linear quadratic Gaussian tracking controller, which we were unable to find in the existing literature.
This paper is concerned with a linear quadratic optimal control for a class of singular Volterra integral equations. Under proper convexity conditions, optimal control uniquely exists, and it could be characterized via Frechet derivative of the quadratic functional in a Hilbert space or via maximum principle type necessary conditions. However, these (equivalent) characterizations have a shortcoming that the current value of the optimal control depends on the future values of the optimal state. Practically, this is not feasible. The main purpose of this paper is to obtain a causal state feedbac…
A collection of converse theorems for integral quadratic constraints (IQCs) is established for linear time-invariant systems. It is demonstrated that when a system interconnected in feedback with an arbitrary system satisfying an IQC is stable, then the given system must necessarily satisfy the complementary IQC. These theorems are specialized to derive multiple versions of converse passivity results. They cover standard notions of strict passivity as well as passivity indices that characterize the trade-offs between passivity surplus and deficit. Converse frequency-weighted small-gain and pas…
We analyze strict dissipativity of generalized linear quadratic optimal control problems on Hilbert spaces. Here, the term ``generalized'' refers to cost functions containing both quadratic and linear terms. We characterize strict pre-dissipativity with a quadratic storage function via coercivity of a particular Lyapunov-like quadratic form. Further, we show that under an additional algebraic assumption, strict pre-dissipativity can be strengthened to strict dissipativity. Last, we relate the obtained characterizations of dissipativity with exponential detectability.
We study linear-quadratic optimal control problems for Voterra systems, and problems that are linear-quadratic in the control but generally nonlinear in the state. In the case of linear-quadratic Volterra control, we obtain sharp necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality. For problems that are linear-quadratic in the control only, we obtain a novel form of necessary conditions in the form of double Volterra equation; we prove the solvability of such equations.
This paper is concerned with a linear quadratic stochastic two-person zero-sum differential game with constant coefficients in an infinite time horizon. Open-loop and closed-loop saddle points are introduced. The existence of closed-loop saddle points is characterized by the solvability of an algebraic Riccati equation with a certain stabilizing condition. A crucial result makes our approach work is the unique solvability of a class of linear backward stochastic differential equations in an infinite horizon.
This paper investigates an infinite-horizon linear quadratic stochastic (LQS) optimal control problem for a class of continuous-time stochastic systems. By employing the technique of adaptive dynamic programming (ADP), we propose a novel model-free policy iteration (PI) algorithm. Without needing all information of the system coefficient matrices, the proposed PI algorithm iterates by using the data of the input and system state collected on a fixed time interval. Finally, a numerical example is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the obtained algorithm.
This paper investigates multidimensional extended type-I BSVIEs and infinite families of BSDEs in the case of quadratic generators. We establish existence and uniqueness results in the case of fully quadratic as well as Lipschitz-quadratic quadratic generators. We also present and discuss a type of flow property satisfied by this family of BSVIEs. As a preliminary step, we establish the well-posedness of a class of infinite families of BSDEs, as introduced in Hernåndez and Possamaï [20], which are of interest in their own right. Our approach relies on the strategy developed by Tevsadze [49] fo…
This thesis presents new mathematical algorithms for the numerical solution of a mathematical problem class called \emph{dynamic optimization problems}. These are mathematical optimization problems, i.e., problems in which numbers are sought that minimize an expression subject to obeying equality and inequality constraints. Dynamic optimization problems are distinct from non-dynamic problems in that the sought numbers may vary over one independent variable. This independent variable can be thought of as, e.g., time. This thesis presents three methods, with emphasis on algorithms, convergence a…
A linear-quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem is considered for mean-field stochastic differential equations with constant coefficients in an infinite horizon. The stabilizability of the control system is studied followed by the discussion of the well-posedness of the LQ problem. The optimal control can be expressed as a linear state feedback involving the state and its mean, through the solutions of two algebraic Riccati equations. The solvability of such kind of Riccati equations is investigated by means of semi-definite programming method.
In this paper, we consider a nonlinear semi-infinite program that minimizes a function including a log-determinant (logdet) function over positive definite matrix constraints and infinitely many convex inequality constraints, called SIPLOG for short. The main purpose of the paper is to develop an algorithm for computing a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point for the SIPLOG efficiently. More specifically, we propose an interior point sequential quadratic programming-type method that inexactly solves a sequence of semi-infinite quadratic programs approximating the SIPLOG. Furthermore, to generate a se…
We formulate and analyze game-theoretic problems for systems governed by integral equations. For Volterra integral equations, we obtain and prove necessary and sufficient conditions for linear-quadratic problems, and for problems that are linear-quadratic in the control. Also, we obtain necessary conditions for one type of pursuit-evasion Volterra games.
This work provides a framework to compute an upper bound on the robust peak-to-peak gain of discrete-time uncertain linear systems using integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). Such bounds are of particular interest in the computation of reachable sets and the $\ell_1$-norm, as well as when safety-critical constraints need to be satisfied pointwise in time. The use of $ρ$-hard IQCs with a terminal cost enables us to deal with a wide variety of uncertainty classes, for example, we provide $ρ$-hard IQCs with a terminal cost for the class of parametric uncertainties. This approach unifies, general…
